The GIIDA project aims to develop a digital infrastructure for the spatial information within CNR. It is foreseen to use semantic-oriented technologies to ease information modeling and connecting, according to international standards like the ISO/IEC 11179. Complex information management systems, like GIIDA, will take benefit from the use of terminological tools like thesauri that make available a reference lexicon for the indexing and retrieval of information. Within GIIDA the goal is to make available the EARTh thesaurus (Environmental Applications Reference Thesaurus), developed by the CNR-IIA-EKOLab. A web-based software, developed by the CNR-Water Research Institute (IRSA) was implemented to allow consultation and utilization of thesaurus through the web. This service is a useful tool to ensure interoperability between thesaurus and other systems of the indexing, with, the idea of cooperating to develop a comprehensive system of knowledge organization, that could be defined integrated, open, multi-functional and multilingual. Currently the system is available in multiple languages mode (Italian - English) and navigation can be done in the following ways: Alphabetical, Hierarchical and for Themes. A full search allows to find any term by searching for the whole term or a part of it and as well as allows to filter the results by themes. Within a collaborative initiative with the CNR-Institute of Applied Mathematics and Information Technology (IMATI) a SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System) version of EARTh was developed. This will ensure the possibility to support the use of the thesaurus within the framework of the Semantic Web in order to be used in decentralized metadata applications

myGrid aims to develop high-level middleware to support an e-scientist in conducting in silico experi- ments in biology. An important part of this is to define a conceptual space - the myGrid information model - where both biological data and experimental processes are modelled, with emphasis on the latter. As such, it defines the basic concepts through which different aspects

Within the ISO's mandate to upgrade its set of technical reports on the measurement of the quality of software products (ISO 9126), the ISO working group associated with it has come up with a proposed new structure, with some interesting contributions. This paper investigates the maturity of two new concepts proposed (measurement primitives and quality measures), highlights some of their weaknesses and proposes a way to address these using the measurement information model of ISO 15939 on software measurement process.

This research is concerned with the study and analysis of product functionality and its association with the physical structure of the product and to develop a product functionality information model (PFIM) for effective management of the product development process. PFIM will enable the designer to make good use of the existing product data and bring more control of the design to the proposed new product. The information model will use the function diagram, which depicts function, responses, failure modes and the critical parameters and noise factors that control these. product and which of these creates most customer dissatisfaction. This leads the designer into an understanding of which of the functions of the mature product are least robust or most prone to failure. The model will meet the requirement to link the failure modes with the critical parameters that drive them. The critical parameters provide the basis for deciding where the design effort should be applied to enable m...

We have been witnessing an increased interest in a more holistic approach to urban design practice and education. In this paper we present a spatial data model for urban design that proposes the combination of urban environment feature classes with design process feature classes. This data model is implemented in a spatial database that becomes the backbone of a City Information Model (CIM), integrating urban neighbourhood formulation, design, and evaluation methods into a comprehensive urban design support system. We demonstrate its application to urban design analysis and evaluation through the development of a tool for AutoCAD Map 3D that is integrated with the PostGIS spatial database.

This paper describes how modeling information flows in the design process may be used to evaluate design solutions when seeking to reduce construction waste in high rise residential buildings. A survey of practicing designers identified a number of possible ways to reduce construction waste. The most advantageous solutions were based on pre-casting and pre-fabrication. Reviewing three of these solutions using information modeling techniques shows the changes in the design process required to accommodate the different design ...

City planning is a complex task and therefore needs to consider the interplay between multi-aspects of a city, for example, transport, pollution, and crime. A city model is important to representing urban issues in a clear manner to the relative stakeholders. Although some city models have been used in the planning process, they are often based on narrow data sets. When sustainability and the quality of urban life generally is considered a more holistic analysis of city issues during the planning process is needed. It calls for city models to be based on integrated data sets. The paper describes the concept and challenges of nD urban information model. The research work on how to develop an nD urban information model to accommodate data sets relevant to different aspects of city planning is presented.

Electronic medical record systems (EMRSs) currently do not lend themselves easily to cross-institutional clinical care and research. Unique system designs coupled with a lack of standards have led to this difficulty. The authors have designed a preliminary EMRS architecture (W3-EMRS) that exploits the multiplatform, multiprotocol, client-server technology of the World Wide Web. The architecture abstracts the clinical information model and the visual presentation away from the underlying EMRS. As a result, computation ...

The Health Level 7 (HL7) Reference Information Model (RIM) was once incepted as an object oriented information model to harmonize the definition of HL7 messages across different application domains. On the heels of the hugely successful HL7 version 2, version 3 and the RIM has received significant attention and credit and in turn is increasingly subjected to criticism. In this paper the authors, who are among the chief designers of the RIM, respond to the major points that have been raised against the RIM in the published literature. We find that much of the criticism is based on misunderstandings and differences in point of view. We wish to advance the dialogue in the hope that when we account for those differences, effective critique may lead to real improvements of the standard.

SNOMED CT (SCT) has been designed and implemented in an era when health computer systems generally required terminology representations in the form of singular precoordinated concepts. Consequently, much of SCT content represents pre-coordinated concepts and their relationships. In this conceptual paper the role of preand post-coordinated terminology expressions are considered in the context of the current development direction of Electronic Health Records and the use of communications and knowledge repositories. The move from current SCT structures to an implementation form of SCT that focuses on “atomic concepts” will support post-coordination and terminology binding to information models. This core or “essential” SNOMED CT called SNOMED Essential Terminology (S-ET) would be smaller in terms of core concept numbers, simpler, easier to maintain and more intuitive for implementers. Our proposed implementation form of SNOMED CT would contain only “atomic concepts” with their attendan...

SUMMARY: AEC projects require multidisciplinary solutions. Today AEC professionals have formal methods to help them manage and communicate much of a single discipline’s information; however, they lack formal methodologies to manage and communicate information and processes among multiple disciplines. As a result, AEC projects have difficulty quickly and accurately achieving their many objectives. We are designing and implementing three methodologies to help AEC professionals overcome these difficulties. Using our POP methodology AEC professionals can organize information models in terms of the functions, forms, and behaviors of the design products, organizations and processes. Using our Narrative methodology they can communicate and manage the integration of design processes by defining and controlling the dependencies between information models. Using our Decision Dashboard methodology, they can consider tradeoffs amongst options and document decisions. In this paper we present our...

Most model selection mechanisms work in an 'overall' modus, providing models without speciffic concern for how the selected model is going to be used afterwards. The focussed information criterion (FIC), on the other hand, is geared towards optimum model selection when inference is required for a given estimand. In this paper the FIC method is extended to weighted versions. This allows one to rank and select candidate models for the purpose of handling a range of similar tasks well, as opposed to being forced to focus on each task separately. Applications include selecting regression models that perform well for speciffied regions of covariate values. We derive these wFIC criteria, give asymptotic results, and apply the method store al data. Formulae for easy implementation are provided for the class of generalised linear models.

The evolution of information and communication technologies and changes in competitive contexts have forced enterprises to rethink managing and organisation modalities. New information infrastructures, changing the modalities through which knowledge is generated, exchanged and utilised, along with the inevitable impact on the production and consuming processes, represent an opportunity of "competitive advantage". The informative integration stemming from new information and digital technologies becomes strategic and value-creating only when the set of information obtained - more consistent as to quality and quantity - is duly mediated by the intervention of those who are in charge of the project and utilise the information models for decision making. Accordingly, the analysis means to highlight the renewed role of professional accountants and controllers in information acquisition and information management in the light of the above mentioned innovations: in the evolutiona...
