James Ensor

"Belgian artist James Ensor was one of extreme individualism.  His work was both deeply personal, and socially radical, and he employed biting humor and satire to create overtly anti-establishmentarian imagery.  While he explored a vast number of motifs in his prolific career as a painter, printmaker and draftsman, his most radical works garnered the greatest attention.  His known tendencies toward anarchist and socialist thought led him to be involved with the progressive radical group “Les XX,” a group of twenty painters, which emerged in 1883 as a leading avant-garde group in Belgium at the time (Pfeiffer 21).  Ensor suffered a great deal of rejection from the group during its ten-year existence, and Ensor ultimately formed the perspective that even this radical group was not avant-garde enough for him (Pfeiffer 21).  Elsewhere he also encountered harsh responses by critics and the art community.  The artist is characterized by his role as a brash outsider, and his independence spawned a number of powerful depictions of social chaos and tyranny through a means of projecting the real injustices he saw in the world around him through an imaginative lens."

Vittorio Pica è oggetto di una rivisitazione storica relativamente recente. Nonostante gli studi pionieristici di Lamberti e Picone Petrusa, solo negli ultimi dieci anni, in effetti, è stata messa in atto un’operazione di ricostruzione della sua figura di critico d’arte, attenta alla complessità e alla varietà dei suoi interessi e agli sviluppi nazionali ed internazionali della sua attività. Tuttavia, non sono stati fin qui indagati in maniera sistematica i riferimenti al Belgio, Paese che Pica visitò in più occasioni e con il quale intrattenne continui contatti per corrispondenza, sebbene sia stato già evidenziato come la produzione letteraria e artistica della piccola e vivace nazione costituisse un ambito di grande interesse per il critico italiano. Questo contributo propone una prima indagine del legame che Vittorio Pica ebbe con alcune coeve correnti artistiche belghe. Il critico si indirizzò in particolare verso artisti nei quali aveva intuito o presagito una nota di modernità, o solo di originalità. Curioso del grottesco, del macabro, del misterioso, interessato a una certa “opacità” delle arti visive, tipica di alcune opere simboliste, Pica trovò in Belgio molteplici diramazioni di ricerca verso le quali si dimostrò osservatore perspicace e disponibile, così come nelle strategie espositive e di sociabilités.
grazie ai numerosi articoli ma anche ai cataloghi di vendita della sua collezione sappiamo dell’interesse che Pica aveva coltivato nei loro confronti, e in particolare di artisti come Ensor e Henry de groux (1866-1930), sui quali ritengo valga la pena soffermarsi in questo studio, modellato quasi esclusivamente sugli scritti pubblicati dal critico napoletano e su altre fonti indirette.

The illustrations from Jules Champfleury’s (1821-1889) publications on L'Histoire de la caricature were a crucial source of imagery for James Ensor between 1885 and 1900. Direct and significant borrowings from Champfleury can be identified in at least twenty-five major ‘grotesque’ paintings and drawings from Ensor’s most creative and productive period. Champfleury served as the conduit through which Ensor discovered and explored the world of the grotesque, satirical, and macabre. Additionally, Champfleury’s books provide an intriguing framework for analyzing several of Ensor’s key grotesque motifs and understanding his rebellious and satirical perspective on art and the role of the artist.

I argue that Ensor's perceiving masks and skeletons, as well as his opaque paint application, point to the problem of solipsism and its practical attendant, egoism, in fin de siècle art and culture. I connect this to the use of masks in the Symbolist theatre of Maeterlinck, usually thought to promise a mystical release from modern problems.

The essays in this book establish that the Belgian painter James Ensor did not develop his fantastical and grotesque universe of masks and skeletons out of his melancholic soul, but that he heavily exploited and transformed an ancient iconographic tradition collected and published by the French author and art critic Jules Champfleury (1821-1889) in his forgotten "History of Caricature" (1869-1880). A second essay on the role of the picture frame analyses how Ensor's bizarre creatures infiltrate the image from the edges and frames of his paintings in order to disrupt the 'normal' world. The essays are a revised version of articles originally published in Dutch in 2016 and 2017 in the art magazine De Witte Raaf.

a novel without a plot, and with only one character, being, indeed, simply a psychological study of a certain young Parisian, who spent his life trying to realize in the nineteenth century all the passions and modes of thought that belonged to every century except his own, and to sum up, as it were, in himself the various moods through which the world-spirit had ever passed, loving for their mere artificiality those renunciations that men have unwisely called virtue as much as those natural rebellions that wise men still call sin. James Ensor (Ostenda 1860-1949), figlio di un ingegnere inglese e di una negoziante fiamminga di Ostenda, comincia a interessarsi all’arte ancora molto giovane. Si iscrive all’Accademia di belle arti di Bruxelles ma non condivide il tradizionalismo dei colleghi. Lascia la capitale e torna nella città natale. Cerca sponde intellettuali nelle avanguardie del tempo, si ispira ai paesaggi della sua terra sul Mare del Nord, al simbolismo; ma soprattutto coltiva una corrisposta, profonda antipatia per i borghesi della sua città, idee anarchiche e un’invincibile tendenza a isolarsi. È attratto dalla vena grottesca di un suo grande conterraneo, Jheronimus Bosch, dal carnevale, dalle maschere e dal rifiuto della folla, vista come una minaccia. L’intera umanità gli fa orrore, e la raffigura spesso seguendo ossessivi schemi espressionisti. Recentemente Ostenda, come una sorta di risarcimento pacificatorio, ha trasformato la sua abitazione in museo.

À l’occasion du centenaire de la mort d’Émile Verhaeren, ce livre tente de renouveler le regard porté sur l’œuvre du poète belge, en conjuguant ses textes les plus célèbres, des textes oubliés ou inédits, des extraits de correspondances, en dialogue avec l’opinion de ses contemporains, ainsi que des tableaux, dessins et sculptures réalisés par des artistes qu’il admirait et défendait ardemment.
Ce livre accompagne l’exposition « Émile Verhaeren : Lumières du Fleuve, Lumière des Arts » (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tournai, Belgique, du 27 septembre au 18 décembre 2016).
