Jan Długosz

Anna of Celje (Cilli) (* ca. 1380/1388; † 1416) gained importance and recognition by marrying Władysław II Jagełło (* ca. 1352/1362; † 1434), the Polish King and Lithuanian Grand Duke and therefore became the first queen from the House of Celje (Cilli). With regard to various narrative and documentary sources, the article tries to shed light of her life, to show Anna's firm integration into the family of the House of Celje and the circumstances that led her to the Polish throne. It exposes that upon Anna's arrival to Kraków she was accepted as the legitimate heir to the Polish throne and discusses the importance of her new position for the rise of the House of Celje. The article gives a short overview of Anna's rulership as a Polish Queen and at the end explores her role in the public life of the Kingdom of Poland, which, although it seems a minor one, caused her to fall into disfavour with the Teutonic Order.

Jan Długosz lengyel krónikás beszámolója alapján a tannenbergi/grünwaldi csatában a litvánok az első összecsapást követően hazájukig menekültek, magára hagyva a lengyeleket a németekkel való harcban. Így a szimbolikus győzelem dicsősége egyedül a lengyeleket illeti. Az események ilyen ábrázolása az évszázadok során elfogadottá vált és a litván nemzet számára szégyenfoltot jelentett. Az újabb kutatások és mellőzött források bevonásával egy egészen más kép bontakozik kit előttünk. A korábbi baltikumi harcokról szóló beszámolók és a csatáról tudósító más krónikák alapján a litvánok nem egyszerűen visszavonultak, hanem a színlelt megfutamodás taktikáját alkalmazták, mellyel megbontották a németek hadrendjét. A hadtörténeti megközelítésből írt dolgozat a források összevetésére és a litvánok színlelt visszavonulása korábbi alkalmazásának bizonyítására koncentrál.

According to the Annales of the Polish chronicler Jan Długosz, after the battle of Tannenberg (1410) the Lithuanian army retreated and did not stop fleeing until Lithuania following the first clash with the left wing of the Teutonic army. They left the Polish army on their own, thus the glory of the symbolic victory over the Teutonic Order behooves the Polish only. Describing the course of the battle in this way became conventional over centuries and was a disgrace to the Lithuanian nation. However, thanks to the results of the latest research and the information of some neglected primary sources we can see the events in a quite different point of view. According to narrative sources reporting on former Baltic battles as well as to other chronicles, letters and accounts on the battle of Tannenberg we can conclude that the Lithuanians did not just withdraw and flee, rather they used the tactic of feigned retreat in the battle. They acted in this way in order to deceive the western crusaders who formed the left wing of the Teutonic army and who were not acquainted with the usual tactic of the Lithuanians. The crusaders in the hope of imminent victory started to chase after the Lithuanians thus the array of the Teutonic army broke up which finally caused its defeat.

In my paper, at the first place I would like to analyze the former encounters between the Teutonic Order and the Lithuanians in order to prove that the latter were familiar with the tactic of feigned retreat and they made use of that during their previous battles also. This is a crucial point in the investigation as some scholars argued that the Lithuanians were unable to carry out such a tactical movement in the battle unless they were helped by a number of Tartars. According to their opinion the Lithuanians could not perform a feigned retreat in the battle of Tannenberg since there were not enough Tartar contingent in their army. By analyzing former encounters of the Teutonic Order against the pagan Prussians and the Lithuanians we can conclude that the Knights met the tactic of feigned retreat several times. In the course of time they became careful and were circumspect in chasing after the fleeing enemy. It is very telling, that in the battle of Tannenberg not the Teutonic Knights but the western crusaders – who were unexperienced in Baltic warfare – followed the withdrawing Lithuanians. These facts prove that amongst the Teutonic Knights the latter were well-known by using feigned retreat.

In the second place I would like to involve and present less known sources relating the battle to demonstrate that this knowledge this maneuver was in deed used in the battle of Tannenberg. In this way, we will see a quite different course of the significant battle. If we compare these sources with that of Jan Długosz we can see a remarkable difference and what is more a contradiction between them in describing this crucial phase of the battle. In the end of the paper I will try to find a proper answer why the Polish chronicler was interested in misrepresenting the role of the Lithuanians in the battle and how he contradicts even himself in his chronicle.

The article presents Jan Długosz's views on sexual inclinations and practices of the Polish medieval monarchs, seen in terms of sinful behaviours. Juxtaposing the chronicler's statements on the intimate sphere's pathologies of the representatives of the Piast and Jagiellon dynasties is the starting point of conducted argumentations. Then, on the basis of the gathered material, the chronicler's att itude towards these off ences-i.e. debauchery, adultery, rapes, and sodomy/peccatum contra naturam-was examined. Thus understood sexuality of the rulers was studied in specifi c contexts, in which it was referred to in the Annals. This approach results from the nature of the work, which is not a fully credible source of knowledge on the topic of sexual activity in factual sense. As a historiographic work, the Annals-the author of which aimed at giving a moralising and didactic dimension-are, in turn, an excellent foundation for recognising the patt ern of monarchical customs, postulated by the representative of the 15th-century Polish clergy. The authors of Polish medieval narrative accounts from and about Poland communicated episodes of Christian holy war and proto-crusades in a distinct and consistent way from the early twelfth century. in this article i will argue that the anonymous author of the Gesta principum Polonorum presented the Polish conquest of Pomerania as a holy war, and that a hundred years later, the learned Vincentius Bishop of Cracow in his Chronica Polonorum depicted three military campaigns against the Prussian pagans and apostates as crusading expeditions. i will also argue that the first Polish historian, Jan długosz, deliberately celebrated and highlighted these earlier accounts to his contemporary fifteenth century readership, using these histories to position Poland’s rulers as having a longstanding and consistent commitment to crusading at a time when participation in crusades was a central concern of Poland’s ruling elites. this article will conclude that each of these written works was a commissioned text and part of a deliberate strategy by the rulers of Poland to communicate their engagement in Christian holy wars at the periphery of Christian Europe.

The Image of Vlachs in the Works by Jan Długosz. Starting from the 14th century the the common border between Poland and Wallachia had a twofold dimension. On the one hand, after the annexation of the Ruthenian lands by Casimir the Great, Poland was directly bordering on Moldova, inhabited by the Vlachs, which together with the nearby Wallachia was becoming the subject of increasingly active diplomatic interventions of the Kingdom of Poland. On the other hand, however, the mountainous regions of southern Poland were a place where the groups of Vlachs settled, intermingled and, and co-existed with the Polish and Ruthenian population. As can be guessed, these circumstances resulted in an increased interest in the Wallachian people and a search for the basic information about this ethnic group by the representatives of the Polish political and intellectual elites. The purpose of the paper is to describe the opinions on Vlachs which can be found in the works of Jan Długosz, one of the most prominent chroniclers of the 15th century. The paper presents the opinions of this historian on such issues as: the origin of the Wallachian population, the circumstances of their emergence in the Slavic lands, religious relations, activities and typical Wallachian professions , and finally, the qualities which distinguished this nation. STRESZCZENIE. Począwszy od XIV stulecia sąsiedztwo polsko-wołoskie miało podwójny wymiar. Z jednej strony, po przyłączeniu przez Kazimierza Wielkiego ziem ruskich, Polska bezpośrednio graniczyła z zamiesz-kaną przez Wołochów Mołdawią, która wraz z nieodległą Wołoszczyzną, stawała się przedmiotem coraz aktyw-niejszych zabiegów dyplomatycznych Królestwa Polskiego. Z drugiej zaś strony, górskie obszary Polski połu-dniowej były miejscem przenikania i osiedlania się grup Wołochów, współegzystujących od tej pory z ludnością polską lub ruską. Jak można się domyślać okoliczności te powodowały wzrost zainteresowania ludnością woło-ską przedstawicieli polskiej elity polityczno-intelektualnej, a co za tym idzie zapotrzebowanie na podstawowe wiadomości o tym etnosie. Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie opinii na temat Wołochów, jakie można odnaleźć w dziełach Jana Długosza, jednego z najwybitniejszych kronikarzy XV stulecia. Валерій Зема СХІДНА ПОЛІТИКА ПАПИ ІНОКЕНТІЯ IV I КОРОНУВАННЯ ДАНИЛА РОМАНОВИЧА Аби позбутися залежності від імператора Заходу Фридриха ІІ, обраний у 1243 р. папа Інокентій IV на початку грудня 1244 р. потайки залишив Рим і втік до Ліону, який на тоді перебував поза межами французької держави і перебував під орудою Філіпа Савойського. Саме там папа лишався ледь не десять років і щойно 1252 р. знову дістався берегів Італії. Поверненню у вічне місто сприяла смерть його головного супротивника, хоча хроніки надають більш драматичну версію: мешканці Риму вислали листа, в якому благали папу про вороття до столиці ап. Петра. За часів Інокентія IV сталася низка знакових в історії середньовічної Європи подій: нова виправа до Святої землі під орудою короля Людовика Святого, спроба розпочати перемовини з номадами, які підкорювали Схід Європи, врешті, проведення собору у Ліоні (декрет призначав розпочати зібрання у свято Йоана Хрестителя, 24 червня 1245 р.), папа вдався до відновлення унійних перемовин з православними правителями Європи. На заклик приступити до спілкування з Римом схвально відгукувалися християни Орієнту, що закарбувалося в «Церковних анналах» Одоріка Рінальді1. Згодом собор почав набувати леґендарних абрисів. Мацей Стрийковський наводить оповідку про гадану подорож Данила Романовича до Ліону, його участь в соборі, прохання про корону, поєднання з латинниками та війну з номадами Сходу. Підхопив цю історію «перший історик Київської Руси» Ігнатій Кульчинський, який записав до складу галицько-руського посольства київського митрополита Йосифа2. Насправді ж до собору запрошувано франкського імператора, аби вчинити над ним суд, а суперечкам володаря із Римом присвячено добру половину 21-го тому згаданої праці Рінальді. Розбрат між світською владою і духовною за часів папи Інокентія IV та імператора з династії Гогенштауфенів нагадує про низку подібних зіткнень, початок яким поклав спір щодо інвеститури між королем Генрихом IV і папою Григорієм VII, що точився в другій половині ХІ ст., згодом, між Фридрихом Барбаросою і папою Олександром ІІІ3. Спір щодо меж папської влади збігся з підвищенням ролі Риму в богословських інноваціях Заходу, бо запровадження науки про чистилище католицького віровчення припадає саме на добу Інокентія IV. У березні 1254 р., на схилку життя, папа надіслав офіційного листа до леґата-кардинала Одона де Шатору, в якому стверджував, що між латинниками і греками багато спільного, однак гідним роз'яснення лишається гостре питання моменту проходження душі через очищувальний вогонь, перед чи після воскресіння мертвих 4. Яна Длугоша. Досліджено зв'язок інформації компільованої праці автора з іншими середньовічними джерелами. Встановлено цінність длугошевих свідчень для вивчення історії половців та їх взаємовідносин з Руссю, Угорщиною і Польщею.

References to the Past in the Artistic Foundations of Cardinal Zbigniew Oleśnicki. Cardinal Zbigniew Oleśnicki was a distinguished personality in many respects; in the context of the following article his education, interests and historical conscience, as well as artistic undertakings are particularly important. The artistic foundations of Oleśnicki attest to the importance that he attached to the communicative opportunities of the works of art, such as the exposure of the past of the Krakow diocese or the commemoration of his own person. Particular importance in his activities was paid to the promotion of the cult of St Stanislaus. It was during his office as a bishop that we observe the time of its considerable growth. Unquestionably, the aforementioned saint Krakow bishop was an important element of the auto-creation of the hierarch, and was sometimes called his alter ego.
Many buildings linked to Oleśnicki are accompanied by foundation plaques (churches in Bodzentyn, Piotrawin and Sienno, and Jerusalem Bursa). Plaques “from the circle of Oleśnicki” were often interpreted in the context of historical conscience and references to the past. So far they have often been represented as a direct reference to the foundation tympana in Polish Romanesque churches. However, the erection plaques with regard to their functional aspect differ from the portals (and thereby from the form of a tympanum), and their form and iconography appear to be connected to the epitaph representations. The comparative material indicates that 15th-century erection plaques do not constitute a direct reference to the Romanesque foundation tympana. A historical character, or at least a strong reference to tradition, can be noticed in some elements of their iconography. A work of art of one of its kind is a plaque in the church in Sienno connected to the Oleśnicki family. Exposed in the presbytery, it links the features of the foundation memento and an epitaph. Owing to the link between the interment of the founder in the presbytery, it triggers the associations with the so-
-called epitaph altar.
Also the foundations of Jan Długosz, closely connected to Oleśnicki, are equipped with the erection plaques, and are the indication of the awaken conscience and historical culture tying both distinguished persons of late-mediaeval Poland.

The author presents the reception of the works of Jan Długosz in the historiography of the Rus-sian Orthodox archbishop of Mogilev, Mstislav and Orsha and also well-known historian of the Russian Orthodox Church, Georgy Konissky. The author of the paper – linking the cultural changes taking place in the final years of the existence of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth with the evident interpretation changes in Konissky’s historiographic works – attempts to answer the ques-tion how the works of Jan Długosz were used by the Archbishop for intellectual debate with main adversaries of the Russian Orthodox Church i.e. Catholic Uniates and their historiosophy.
