Juan de Torquemada

The Monarquía indiana-published in Seville in 1615 by Fray Juan de Torquemada-represented one of the most significant efforts to include Indigenous religions within a global view of religious diversity. As a product of a modern process of " mondialization " , the work of Torquemada reflected on the nature of Mesoamerican gods from a groundbreaking point of view. The Franciscan produced an evolution of the missionary methods and strategies used during the first part of colonial history. In the context of modern discourses on religion, the work of Torquemada does not represent only an "ethnographic" attempt to understand the complexity of Indigenous religions in order to promote evangelization. On the contrary, the missionary reflection on Indigenous gods established a key stage in the modern construction of a global theory of polytheism.

Mark of Ephesus and his theology of Eucharistic consecration has been discovered, ironically, to be exactly reflected in the latest Roman Catholic edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 1992). Essentially, Mark held an explicit doctrine that both the words of institution (dominical words at the last supper), the epiclesis, and the three accompanying signs of the cross are all together necessary for any valid transmutation of the elements of bread and wine. While his position was opposed at the Council of Florence by the Dominicans, it had strangely coincided with the Eucharistic theology of Bonaventure in his Commentary on Lombard's Sentences.

The entire debate at Florence actually marked a misrepresentation of Catholic dogma as it existed in the 14th century in favor of theologoumena or theological opinions that were predominant in the universities but that also enjoyed no dogmatic status. The Latin arguments on behalf of the Eucharistic transmutation or transubstantiation mark such a case. The Dominican that was entrusted with the debates attempted to require of Greeks Aquinas' "instrumental causality" of the priest as the real or a truly formal cause of changing bread and wine. Ironically, it was principally the Franciscans that reproved this doctrine as contradictory and simplistic. Furthermore, the Latin arguments against Mark of Ephesus required them to ignore and fail to address parts of both Aquinas' ST (affirming the authority and existence, for example, of the anaphora of James the apostle), and even Augustine. What is more one crux of the debate lie in the interpretation of the Roman canon by Nicholas Cabasilas, which subsequently proves to be correct by commentaries and comparison of Cabasilas' argument with Lombard's own tradition and sources.

Both Latin and Greek tradition knew of a consecratory epiclesis in their respective Latin and Greek liturgies until a gradual theological shift began in the thirteenth century in the West. Mark of Ephesus and Nicholas Cabasilas surprise us in their explanation of the epiclesis by coinciding with traditional Latin exegesis of St. Ambrose of Milan, through Medieval Latin authors, even until St. Bonaventure. The Dominican approach of John Torquemada has interesting holes and lacunae, some of which must be accredited to the patristic and historical deficits in Aquinas' own research.

The story of the "moment/s" of consecration has really never been told from the perspective of the sources and underlying controlling idea of the Theotokos at the Annunciation as the universal point of departure for theological reflection on the transmutation of the gifts. Perhaps an ancient, if forgotten, starting point may finally overcome thomistically inspired preoccupations by recourse to the Fathers and to the solutions lurking within the Franciscan tradition of the Eucharist?

I offer  the published version of my article. This work presents an in-depth study of Mark's method of doing ecclesiology and ranking theological authorities.
Quite a few, heretofore unknown, facts have been discovered:
(1.) The important interventive roles of the papacy that were appreciated by Mark in the history of the Orient
(2.) Mark's reliance on Photius' works for ecclesiology
(3.) Mark's acceptance of the forgeries: (a.) Actus B. Sylvestri and (b.) Donation of Constantine per Photius and Balsamon respectively.
(4.) Mark's explicit and deep commitment to Constantinople V (8th Ecumenical Council) 879-80.

Furthermore, and entire section rigorously reproduces Mark's method for ranking and interpreting theological authorities. Surprisingly, Mark's method is not unlike the Commonitorium of St. Vincent of Lérins. He acknowledges classical "loci theologici" or topoi as they came to be catalogued by Mechior Cano in the 16th century. This firmly places him in the strongest possible position to dialogue meaningfully with Latins of his own epoch as well as with contemporary Roman Catholic dogmatic theologians. Mark's understanding of the role of Constantinople was well informed per his sources and his knowledge of the history of the Photian saga was second to none from his own day until Dvornik's thesis c. 1950.

Il volume costituisce la prima monografia dedicata all’ultimo decennio di attività del Beato Angelico, ai due soggiorni dell’artista a Roma tra la fine del 1445 e la morte nel 1455. Sommo esponente della pittura quattrocentesca, il domenicano Fra Giovanni da Fiesole operò al servizio di due pontefici, Eugenio IV e Niccolò V, di un cardinale, Juan de Torquemada, e per la casa madre del proprio ordine, Santa Maria sopra Minerva,dove alfine fu sepolto in una tomba monumentale. Dei cicli di affreschi eseguiti dal pittore nella città dei papi, solo la Cappella Niccolina si è conservata, capolavoro artistico e manifesto ideologico della Renovatio Urbis. Nel volume sono ricostruiti in dettaglio la configurazione e i dati salienti anche delle opere perdute, dalla Cappella del Sacramento in Vaticano fino alle Meditationes nel chiostro della Minerva, attraverso fonti testuali e  figurative. Protagonista dell’Umanesimo cristiano, pittore teologo assimilato al Doctor Angelicus Tommaso d’Aquino, l’Angelico determinò, con Leon Battista Alberti, Bernardo Rossellino e Piero della Francesca, una svolta epocale nella Roma del primo Rinascimento.

The book is the  first monograph devoted to the last decade of the activity of Fra Angelico, who in the mid-fifteenth century marked a watershed in early Renaissance Rome. One of the leading representatives of Quattrocento painting, the Dominican friar Giovanni da Fiesole worked for two pontiffs, Eugene IV and NicholasV, a cardinal, Juan deTorquemada, and the mother house of his order, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, where he died and was buried in a monumental tomb.

The first part of this paper is an iconographic analysis of the central panel of the triptych by Fra Angelico in  Palazzo  Corsini,  Rome.  It  represents  the  Last  Judgement  and  is  a  somewhat  reduced  version  of  a  composition first seen in the panel from the monastic church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence. The saints  represented  to  the  left  of  Christ  are  Peter  and  his  brother  Andrew,  and  those  to  the  right  Paul  and  John  the  Evangelist.  Behind  the  latter  are  represented  Sts.  Benedict  and  Francis,  and  a  holy  pope,  often  identified  as  Sixtus  on  the  basis  of  a  similar  pope  represented  on  the  wing  of  a  triptych  painted  by  Fra  Angelico for the Dominican cardinal Juan de Torquemada. The pope in the Corsini Triptych does not carry
an  attribute,  and  may  also  represent  another  saintly  pope  such  as  Gregory  the  Great.  The  saints  in  the  second and third rows to the left of Christ are Stephen, Dominic, and a mitred monk identified in a previous contribution to this journal as Basil the Great. The presence of the latter among the heavenly host has an interesting parallel in a passage in the Chronicon of St Antoninus, in which he explains that the founders of  the  religious  orders  such  as  Basil,  Augustine,  Benedict,  Dominic,  and  Francis  (all  of  whom,  with  the  exception of Augustine, are depicted in the panel) are surely present in the seraphic order of the heavens.
There  is  some  technical  and  documentary  evidence  to  suggest  that  the  three  panels  of  the  Corsini  Triptych  did  belong  together  originally.  However,  the  two  wings,  representing  the  Ascension  and  the  Descent  of  the  Holy  Spirit,  present  some  slight  anomalies:  the  number  of  apostles  is  reduced,  and  the  figural  types  of  Sts.  Peter,  Andrew,  and  John  do  not  correspond  to  those  in  the  central  panel.  Although  these inconsistencies remain difficult to explain, they do not constitute decisive arguments for the hypothesis that the triptych in its current form is an assemblage of two different works. The combination
of  the  three  subjects  is  unique  for  a  triptych,  but  not  anomalous:  the  Ascension  and  the  subsequent  Descent of the Holy Spirit signal the beginning of the Church, the Last Judgement its fulfilment.
In the final part the issue of cryptoportraits is addressed. It has been proposed that St Sixtus and the similar pope  in  the  Corsini  Triptych  are  in  fact  portraits  of  Eugene  IV,  the  pope  who  had  created  Torquemada  cardinal-priest of San Sisto, the implication being that the cardinal also ordered the Corsini Triptych from Fra  Angelico.  The  similarities  with  the  documented  portraits  of  the  pope  are  minimal,  however.  It  is  still  quite possible that the cardinal commissioned the triptych, but this cannot be demonstrated on the basis of iconography.

Este artículo trata sobre patrones iconográficos, ideólogos e interpretación de mensajes.

Il "De papatu Romano Antichristo" di Alberico Gentili (San Ginesio 1552 – Londra 1608) è conservato nella Bodleian Library di Oxford (D’Orville 607, ff. 1r-95v) e rappresenta il più noto degli inediti del giurista di San Ginesio al quale, soprattutto a partire dal secolo scorso, gli studiosi hanno dedicato particolare attenzione. Nuove indagini sul manoscritto hanno dimostrato che, pur essendo stato originariamente redatto fra il 1580 e il 1585, quel testo era stato rivisto, corretto e integrato dallo stesso Gentili. Correzioni, aggiunte, appunti scritti dall’Autore almeno fino al 1591: una novità deducibile dalla lettura di alcuni appunti autografi vergati in uno dei primi fogli del manoscritto bodleiano – fogli originariamente destinati a restare bianchi – ove si fa rinvio, più volte, al "Tractatus criminalis" di Tiberio Deciani la cui "editio princeps" risale al 1590.

Per tentare di comprendere pienamente l’entità e la natura sostanziale di queste modifiche e annotazioni, e le ragioni per le quali il Gentili non giunse mai alla determinazione di completare e successivamente pubblicare il lavoro, occorreva tornare a studiare criticamente la fonte manoscritta nella sua interezza, ma soprattutto predisporne l’edizione critica: un evento sempre auspicato ma mai, fino ad ora, realizzato.

Il progetto, dopo oltre sei anni di intenso lavoro da parte di Giovanni Minnucci che, nel corso di questo lungo periodo, ha dato periodicamente conto dei risultati progressivamente raggiunti, è stato finalmente portato a compimento.

Composta di 24 "Assertiones", attraverso le quali l’A. intese dimostrare che l’Anticristo era da identificare nel Papato Romano, l’opera è corredata da un numero copiosissimo di allegazioni tratte dalla Sacra Scrittura, dalle opere dei Padri della Chiesa, da quelle teologiche, storiche, filosofiche, letterarie e giuridiche, individuate dal curatore, a pié di pagina, in un apposito apparato critico. In un secondo apparato, sempre a pié di pagina, vengono edite anche le numerose "additiones" che Gentili vergò nei margini e, talvolta, nelle interlinee del testo. Segue un’  "Appendice" nella quale si legge il testo, criticamente edito, degli appunti di lavoro che Gentili annotò nel frontespizio e nei fogli del manoscritto inizialmente destinati a restare bianchi.

In ragione della particolare natura del testo – un vero e proprio work in progress che Alberico Gentili non aveva mai concluso – l’edizione critica del De papatu Romano Antichristo, delle numerose additiones e dei cospicui appunti sparsi che ne caratterizzavano la stesura, era meritevole di essere accompagnata da un saggio introduttivo. Per una migliore comprensione dell’opera, e per una sua più compiuta, ancorché preliminare, illustrazione, Giovanni Minnucci ha ritenuto necessario soffermarsi sulle presumibili ragioni sottese alla decisione assunta da Gentili di voler affrontare il tema oggetto del suo lavoro e sulle fonti complessivamente utilizzate – avendo riguardo anche a quelle prive di esplicito rinvio – cercando di approfondire, allo stesso tempo, la natura delle additiones vergate nei margini e nelle interlinee, e le probabili motivazioni della sua mancata pubblicazione. Né potevano essere ignorate, infine, in ragione dei contenuti eminentemente teologici e giuridici dell’inedito, le idee che, in relazione ai rapporti fra diritto e teologia e fra coloro che quelle discipline professavano, il nostro Autore aveva espresso negli anni ai quali va fatta risalire la conclusione della prima redazione dell’opera e a quelli immediatamente seguenti, allorquando decideva di aggiornarla e modificarla. In questo periodo, com’è noto, si concretizzarono i prodromi di un vero e proprio scontro teorico, di natura politico-dottrinale, con i puritani inglesi e, più in particolare, con il teologo John Rainolds. Queste vicende, già note alla storiografia, erano suscettibili non solo di essere ripensate e approfondite alla luce della documentazione manoscritta che le attesta, ma anche nuovamente contestualizzate: proprio mentre la polemica iniziava ad accendersi per poi successivamente esplodere all’inizio degli anni Novanta del XVI secolo, Alberico stava attendendo alla scrittura e alla successiva revisione del De papatu. Temi e problemi già oggetto di studio da parte di Minnucci, che vengono qui ripresi, integrati, approfonditi e notevolmente ampliati nei Prolegomena che precedono l’edizione.

Giunto ad uno stadio avanzato di elaborazione, il De papatu Romano Antichristo attesta i forti dissensi che caratterizzarono la vicenda politica e religiosa europea in uno dei momenti più bui della sua storia millenaria, ed è contestualmente testimone della vastissima cultura e della poliedrica attività scientifica del grande giurista e pensatore italiano, esule in Inghilterra sin dal 1580 per la sua adesione alla Riforma, e regius professor di civil law a Oxford dal 1587.

RESUMEN La presente nota estudia el texto de 4 Esdras 13,39-50, un libro considerado como apó-crifo desde el Concilio de Trento pero cuya autoridad es indiscutida en España durante todo el siglo XVI; la referencia que allí se hace al destierro de las diez tribus de Israel es el elemento clave en la polémica sobre el posible origen judío de los indios americanos. La nota estudia algunas de las obras más representativas de esa polémica durante el siglo XVI.

In his Decretum, D. 9, c. 6, Gratian stated the respective value of Hebrew, Greek and Latin manuscripts of the Bible for the emendation of Latin Scripture. This article deals with the commentaries on this passage from the mid-twelfth to the mid-fifteenth century. Due to the misattribution of a statement to Augustine rather than Jerome in the Decretum, and the later
introduction of an out-of-context quotation by Jerome, the two Church Fathers seemed to contradict each other on the matter in question. For three centuries, the decretists sought to explain or even reconcile this contradiction in various ways which are traced in this article.
