Contrary to Reinhold's theoretical discussion of Kant's philosophy, his practical critique and its underlying action theory and theory of freedom have been neglected in scholarship. In my paper, I shall reconstruct Reinhold’s practical philosophy after Kant. For that purpose, I will concentrate on the so-called “Reinhold’s Dilemma,” which concerns the problem of moral imputability in the case of evil actions in Kant. I show how Reinhold tried to escape this dilemma by introducing an elaborated action theory and theory of individual freedom. I shall argue that Reinhold’s account of freedom to act according and against the moral law is not best understood in terms of freedom of indifference, but rather in terms of a freedom to balance reasons on the basis of first and second-order volitions. I shall also discuss Kant’s attempt to escape Reinhold’s Dilemma in his late Metaphysics of Morals. Finally, I will evaluate Reinhold’s systematic siginificance by relating his theory of individual freedom with recent conceptions of volitional self-determination.

How is it possible that a person can be regarded as a voluntary subject of her own actions – be they good or evil? The book approaches this question by analyzing prominent answers given in and after Kant – by Karl Leonhard Reinhold, Friedrich Schiller, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling. The book shows that this debate of freedom is situated in a larger tradition of voluntary self-determination that can be traced back from Leibniz, Duns Scotus and Aquinas, to Augustine.  It also shows that the debate after Kant has its systematic point of reference in the concept of a liberum arbitrium voluntatis, that is a reflective and morally qualified freedom of choice. Finally, the book relates the historical debate with contemporary theories of freedom stemming from the analytic tradition.

This paper aims at showing that Karl Leonhard Reinhold’s theory of representation and consciousness constitutes a link between Kantianism and the further developments of idealism. By retracing the presence of Reinhold in the young Hegel’s work, the author suggest that Reinhold may have influenced Hegel’s reading of Kant.

In his 1795 essay, Briefe über die ästhetische Erziehung des Menschen, Friedrich Schiller presents his theory of aesthetic experience in the context of two competing drives (material and formal) that characterize life as a whole. This paper will examine his account of the play-drive (Spieltrieb) as a third drive that cancels and sublimates the other two in aesthetic enjoyment. Since Schiller describes himself as a Kantian, I will discuss his theory of the play-drive in relation to Kant's argument concerning the free play of the imagination and understanding. I will claim that Schiller's description of play goes beyond the specific domain that Kant attributes to aesthetic experience. Schiller views the activity of play as constituting the person at every stage of life. The play-drive transforms impulses for physical satisfaction into enjoyment of form, creates a love for beauty and the sublime, and signals moral progress in society. Most importantly, Schiller considers human freedom to be the product of aesthetic experience, whereby the individual overcomes the oppressive forces of society through the medium of play.

According to Kant’s “reciprocity thesis” (Allison), a free will and a will under moral laws are one and the same. This raises the question of whether a will that is not under moral laws can still be considered free and its actions imputable. In this paper, I shall analyze the immediate discussion of Kant’s imputability problem in the philosophy of Johann August Heinrich Ulrich and Carl Christian Erhard Schmid. In his Eleutheriology (1788), Ulrich distinguishes between natural and moral necessity. He argues that although Kant avoids natural necessity, his philosophy nevertheless entails moral necessity, because the intelligible character and its capacity of reason are considered immutable and not within time. Following Ulrich, and even radicalizing his necessarianism, Schmid in his Attempt at a Moral Philosophy (1790/92) argued for an intelligible fatalism, according to which only moral actions are free, whereas immoral actions are due to external obstacles of practical reason. Freedom must therefore not be considered in terms of all or nothing but admits of degrees. I finally show how both Ulrich and Schmid are tacitly dependent on Leibniz’ conception of freedom, and how Karl Leonhard Reinhold attempted to solve their problems by sharply distinguishing between thinking and willing.

Si tratta di pagine importantissime dal punto di vista della comprensione delle reali intenzioni di Kant e di quelle che per lui erano le sue conquiste.

In this paper, I will shed light on Karl Leonhard Reinhold's and Friedrich Schiller's conceptions of practical self-determination after Kant. First, I outline Kant's conception of freedom as autonomy. I then explain the so-called "Reinhold's dilemma," which concerns the problem of moral imputability in the case of evil actions, which arises from Kant's theory of autonomy. I then show how Reinhold and Schiller tried to escape this dilemma by developing an elaborated theory of individual freedom. I will argue that Reinhold's and Schiller's symmetrical account of freedom to act according and against the moral law is not to be confused with freedom of indifference but can be reconstructed in terms of practical self-determination on the basis of first-order desires and second-order volitions.

The works of Karl Leonhard Reinhold (1757–1823) were a major factor in the development of post-Kantian philosophy, yet his exact contribution is still under discussion. This book investigates how Reinhold’s background in Enlightenment influenced his reception of Kant‌’s critical philosophy. From his pre-Kantian efforts up to the point where he began distancing himself from the master, Reinhold’s own philosophical development takes center stage. This development, rather than critical philosophy, was the main ingredient of Reinhold’s contribution to post-Kantian philosophy.

The influence that Reinhold had on contemporary understanding of Kant means that his work serves as a bridge between Kant and German idealism.The series deliberately places no emphasis on any particular scholarly method. 1799 is the year of the "atheism dispute" on Fichte's philosophy. In this dispute Karl Leonhard Reinhold took part with his open letter Sendschreiben an J. C. Lavater und J. G. Fichte über den Glauben an Gott, a text that has to be read with the other of the same year Ueber die Paradoxien der neuesten Philosophie. The main topic of these works is the relation between life and philosophy, and consequently between faith and knowledge, which represents a question that has led Reinhold's thought through his entire production. In this essay I will discuss Reinhold's solution of a 'middle point of view' (Zwischenstandpunkt) between Fichte's speculation and the philosophy of Jacobi by means of the concepts of Überzeugung (conviction) and freedom, to show whether and how Reinhold found an "harmonic agreement" between the moral convictions of the common sense and the philosophical theories. Meanwhile, I will draw attention to the continuity of Reinhold's thought by demonstrating that the conceptual cornerstone of the works about Fichte's atheism are intimately related to Reinhold's conversion to Bardili's realism.

Karl Leonhard Reinhold ist der Mann, der zwischen 1786 und 1787 mit seinen Briefen über die Kantische Philosophie im Teutschen Mer-kur die kritische Philosophie überhaupt erst auf die Agenda der zeit-genössischen philosophischen Debatte gesetzt hat. Der Impakt der Briefe kann in der Tat nicht groß genug veranschlagt werden. Insbesondere die Studenten im Tübinger Stift sind durch sie in die kritische Philosophie eingeführt worden und haben aus ihnen wichtige Inspirationen geschöpft. Auch Fichte war sich über die Bedeutung der Briefe durchaus im Klaren, obwohl er in seinem Werk wenig auf sie eingeht; zitiert werden sie lediglich in der »Creuzer-Rezension«.

This book argues that Fichte’s philosophy is an investigation of the concept of philosophy leading to the replacement of the name φιλοσοφία by the name Wissenschaftslehre. Such a replacement is the result of his reception of Kant's transcendental approach as a revolution leading to a new conception of philosophy, not as much as the love of wisdom, but rather as the knowledge of knowledge. When conceived in those terms, philosophical knowledge is the grasping of the activities grounding the possibility of the distinction between subject and object. Now, this approach requires a new conception of the function of philosophical language, insofar as it should not represent objects, but rather manifest the operation of cognizing activities on which objectivity is to be grounded. As a result, the exposition of philosophy acquires a performative dimension, since it should not as much define its concepts, but rather show their operation. In face of this challenge, Fichte operates a variation of the conceptual languages within which philosophy is presented (one philosophy, multiple presentations - one spirit, multiple letters). The constant revitalization of this praxis depends on its turn on a pedagogical work aiming at: (i) bringing the scholarly language closer to the everyday language; (ii) building a historical consciousness among those that philosophize; and (iii) developing a collective space for the educational praxis. Fichte's Wissenschaftslehre can thus be understood as an exploration and reevaluation of what philosophy is.

Das Genre der Antrittsrede – durchaus bis heute bedeutsam 2-stellt eine besondere Gattung dar, deren Analyse daher manchen Aufschluß kultur-und philosophiegeschichtlicher Art bieten kann. Denn Antrittsreden sind spezifische Formen öffentlicher Kommunikation, die sowohl im universi-tätsöffentlichen Vortrag wie etwa in gedruckter Form ein Bild der Philoso-phie und des Philosophen liefern, das wirken soll. In diesem Aufsatz stelle ich eine neue Interpretation der Reinhold’schen Sprachphilosophie vor. Mein Ziel ist es zu erklären, wie Reinhold der Meinung sein konnte, seine Sprachphilosophie stelle, ebenso wie seine Elementarphilosophie, den Versuch dar, Kants Kritische Philosophie zu fundieren. Außerdem möchte ich zeigen, worin die philosophische Bedeutung von Reinholds Ansatz gegenüber den Sprachphilosophien seiner Zeitgenossen besteht.

Kant, as is well known, considers cognitions of objects to require both concepts and intuitions. Since this criterion needs to be met by both empirical and a priori cognition, it allows him to reject the a priori judgments about the soul, the world as such, and God characteristic of post-Leibnizian metaphysics. Since, however, the activity Kant carries out in the Critique of Pure Reason itself does not seem to rest on intuition, it is unclear how the apodictic certainty Kant believed his own analyses to yield can be accounted for. In On the Foundation of Philosophical Knowledge, Reinhold addresses this question by claiming that everything Kant proves in his work is proven from concepts alone and could not have been proven in any other way. If Reinhold is right, what resources does Kant offer in the Critique of Pure Reason to distinguish the mode of a priori cognition he rejects from the mode of a priori cognition he himself enacts? In order to answer this question, it will be necessary to investigate the various senses in which Kant uses the terms 'object' and 'objective' as well as the activities he attributes to pure reason and the pure understanding.

Der Versuch einer neuen Theorie des menschlichen Vorstellungsvermögens zählt zu den Hauptbeiträgen von Reinholds Bemühen, Kants vernunftkritische Ergebnisse zu einem System der Elementarphilosophie fortzuentwickeln. Nach einer Vorrede, die von den Schicksalen der frühesten Rezeption der kantischen Philosophie handelt, und dem 1. Buch, in dem das in den Briefen über die Kantische Philosophie vorbereitete Thema erster Grundsätze in den Bereichen von Religion, Moral und Naturrecht weiter erörtert wird, unterbreitet Reinhold mit dem 2. und 3. Buch die Resultate zu seinem neuartigen kantischen System. Dieses beruht im fundamentalen Teil auf einer «Theorie des Vorstellungsvermögens überhaupt», in welcher die für alle Systemteile gültige Triadik von Vorstellung, Subjekt und Objekt sowie die für das Vorstellen eines Gegenstandes konstitutiven Verhältnisse von Form und Stoff, Einheit und Mannigfaltigkeit sowie Spontaneität und Rezeptivität entfaltet werden. Darauf folgt eine in die Bereiche der Sinnlichkeit, des Verstandes und der Vernunft untergliederte «Theorie des Erkenntnißvermögens überhaupt». Dieser eng an die Kritik der reinen Vernunft anschließende Theorieteil besticht durch ausführliche Herleitungen zu den Tafeln der Urteilsfunktionen, Kategorien und Schemata sowie zum System der transzendentalen Ideen. Zu seinen Besonderheiten gehören die Erweiterung von Kants Urteilsauffassung aus dem Leitfaden-Kapitel zu einem dreistufigen Erkenntnismodell sowie die Fortbildung von Kants Ansatz der Selbstaffektion zu einem auf den Begriff des Selbstbewusstseins fokussierten Theoriestück eines «Bewußtseyns überhaupt». Das 3. Buch endet mit «Grundlinien der Theorie des Begehrungsvermögens», die andeuten, dass Reinhold sein auf den Begriffen der Vorstellung bzw. des Bewusstseins aufgebautes System als theoretisch und praktisch zugleich konzipiert. Er operiert unter anderem mit der – auf Friedrich Schillers ästhetische Reflexionen vorausdeutenden – Unterscheidung von Form- und Stofftrieb. Around 1800, in addition to the well-studied group of idealists, there was also a group of realists, who have received relatively scant scholarly attention individually and almost no attention as a group. This study examines this group of realists, primarily through its founder, Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi, whose systematic commitments inspired a larger group of realists, who variously adapted the position to their own needs, followed it to the point of orthodoxy or developed it further. Throughout the study, I will examine these various ways of being a realist in Jacobi‟s sense and will argue that there are many shared characteristics, commitments and lines of argumentation that the realists have in common with the idealists.

K.L. Reinhold advocates a theory of free will as the capacity to choose for or against the moral law. Reinhold's theory has often been accused of being psychologistic due to its alleged appeal to empirical facts of consciousness. This paper argues that instead of merely positing free will as a fact of consciousness, Reinhold provides an argument for free will as a necessary condition for moral responsibility. This sheds new light on the development of the concept of will in the wake of Kant's practical philosophy. In his Letters on the Kantian Philosophy Volume II, K.L. Reinhold presents a theory of free will in the spirit of Kant's own theory, though with an emphasis on choice, viz. our capacity to choose for or against the moral law. Scholarship on Reinhold has been growing and free will has been a popular topic among recent scholars. Reinhold's theory is often criticized for being psychologistic.1 Faustino Fabbianelli claims that Reinhold had difficulty "extricating himself from a psychological conception of freedom, because his discussion remains grounded in mere 1 Exceptions to the psychologistic interpretation of Reinhold's theory of free will are Martin Bondeli and Jörg Noller. Bondeli denies that Reinhold's theory "transforms moral freedom into a kind of psychological dependence" (Bondeli 2001, p. 248) and recognizes that Reinhold argues for freedom as a necessary condition for our awareness of the moral law as binding upon us (Bondeli 2018, pp. 529-530). Noller acknowledges that Reinhold's theory concerns the "entire use of freedom" and that Reinhold's attempt to realize Kant's theory through first-order "volitional tendencies" structured in drives does not necessarily imply that Reinhold's theory merely concerns "moral psychology" (Noller 2015, p. 226).

Johann Friedrich Flatt (1759–1821) war der erste Philosophieprofessor, der in Tübingen Vorlesungen über Kants Kritische Philosophie gehalten hat. Sie wurden nachweislich von Hegel, Hölderlin und Schelling besucht. Flatt bemüht sich darin, eine wohlwollend neutrale Haltung gegenüber der ›Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹ einzunehmen. Insofern können die hier edierten Nachschriften das lange vorherrschende Urteil korrigieren, Flatt sei nichts weiter als ein »Kantgegner und Apologet der Tübinger Orthodoxie« gewesen. Die Nachschriften der ›Metaphysischen‹ und der ›Psychologischen Vorlesungen‹ stammen von Hegels und Hölderlins Kommilitonen August Friedrich Klüpfel und sind durch Einleitungen und Sachkommentare erläutert.

Karl Leonhard Reinhold skizziert in den Briefen über die Kantische Philosophie von 1792 Grundlinien zu einer praktischen Philosophie im Anschluss an Kant, in deren Zentrum markante Reflexionen über Willen und Willensfreiheit stehen. In der Absicht, Kants Freiheitslehre gegen die im Zeichen eines "intelligiblen Fatalismus" stehenden Deutungen und Vorwürfe zu verteidigen, akzentuiert Reinhold den Begriff der Willensfreiheit neu. Seine Definition als Vermögen, sich für oder gegen das Sittengesetz zu entscheiden, legt den Grundstein zu der seit der frühen Systemphilosophie typischen Fokussierung auf diesen Begriff als Fundament der Moralphilosophie, wenn nicht der Philsophie überhaupt. Zu den verteidigten kantischen Lehren ergibt sich indessen ein spannungsvolles Verhältnis, das Kant in der Metaphysik der Sitten zu Klarstellungen und Differenzierungen zwischen Wille und Willkür veranlasst.
Im vorliegenden Band wird dieses Kapitel der nachkantischen Freiheitsdiskussion aus verschiedenen Perspektiven interpretiert und diskutiert.

Ueber das Fundament des philosophischen Wissens gehört zu den Schlüsseltexten von Reinholds Plan, Kants vernunftkritische Ergebnisse zu einem System der Elementarphilosophie fortzuentwickeln. In konzentrierter Form präsentiert Reinhold seine Ansichten zum «Fundament» dieses Systems, zum sogenannten «Satz des Bewußtseyns». In Auseinandersetzung mit Kant, relevanten vorkritischen Autoren (Locke, Leibniz, Hume, Crusius) sowie zeitgenössischen Kritikern (vor allem August Wilhelm Rehberg und Johann Christoph Schwab) wird dafür argumentiert, dass es sich hiermit um einen gewissen, einleuchtend artikulierten und wahrhaft ersten Grundsatz der Philosophie handelt. Verteidigt und neu durchdacht wird zudem der Versuch, das Fundament im Sinne eines Grundsatzes zu verstehen, mit dessen Hilfe sich die Gewissheit und systematische Ordnung von Folgesätzen deutlich machen lässt. Ein besonderes Augenmerk richtet Reinhold auf das Fundament der Vernunftkritik, das er als «Möglichkeit der Erfahrung» kennzeichnet und auffällig mit Kants oberstem Grundsatz aller synthetischen Urteile in Verbindung bringt. Mit der kritischen Feststellung, dieses Fundament sei «weder allgemein (umfassend) noch auch fest genug», werden die Weichen für ein kommendes nachkantisches Paradigma gestellt. Reinhold ist der Auffassung, dass mit dem Satz des Bewusstseins jenes Fundament entdeckt ist, das sich für die Errichtung eines die Resultate Kants übersteigenden Gesamtsystems der theoretischen und praktischen Vernunft eignet. Darüber hinaus soll hiermit jener sichere epistemische Anfangspunkt aufgezeigt sein, aus dem sich der Beweis synthetischer Urteile a priori, der bei Kant, wie Reinhold diagnostiziert, den Eindruck einer fatalen Zirkularität erweckt, überzeugend führen lässt.

Mit ihrer profilierten Parteinahme für eine wissenschaftliche «Philosophie überhaupt» beeinflusste die Schrift entscheidend das Denken Fichtes und des frühen Schelling. Dem Neukantianer Leonard Nelson zufolge darf man behaupten, dass sie «die wichtigste von allen Erscheinungen ist, die auf die Geschichte der erkenntnistheoretisch orientierten Philosophie nach Kant eingewirkt haben».

Mit der vorliegenden Neuedition wird endlich wiederum der gesamte, Beilagen von Johann Benjamin Erhard und Friedrich Karl Forberg enthaltende Originaltext zugänglich. In einem Anhang werden die in den Beilagen kritisierten Rezensionen von Rehberg und Schwab wiedergegeben. Der Band enthält eine ausführliche Einleitung und einen Kommentar.

Reinholds Antwort auf die legendäre Frage des Pilatus «Was ist die Wahrheit?» zielt systematisch auf eine Absage an traditionelle Definitionen der Wahrheit als Übereinstimmung von Vorstellung und Gegenstand sowie an spekulative Formen der ontologischen Wahrheitstheorie. In Abgrenzung vom Paradigma des intentionalen Vorstellens soll Übereinstimmung als prüfende Selbstdarstellung eines als wahr behaupteten Sachverhalts gedacht werden. Von daher wird eine Namenserklärung der Wahrheit ausformuliert, bei welcher der Gedanke der «Uebereinstimmung des Seyns mit sich selbst» den Leitfaden bildet. Reinhold argumentiert in kriteriologischer Hinsicht dafür, Stufen des Anschauens und Wahrnehmens, Begreifens und Sprechens ebenso zu berücksichtigen wie das Systemwissen im Bereich der erkennenden und moralischen Vernunft. Reinhold befasst sich außerdem mit psychologischen Kriterien wie der Kultivierung des Wahrheitsgefühls und zieht religionsphilosophische Konsequenzen aus seinem Wahrheitsverständnis.

From the early 1790s until after the turn of the century, a very productive but also controversial exchange took place between Reinhold and Fichte. Though many key aspects of post-Kantian philosophy were discussed, the philosophical confrontation between Reinhold and Fichte is most instructive for the understanding of post-Kantian philosophy. The contributions in the present collection focus on the central systematic issues at the different stages of the confrontation between Fichte and Reinhold, thereby illuminating questions that are essential to the understanding of the evolution of post-Kantian German philosophy.

Around 1800, in addition to the well-studied group of idealists, there was also a group of realists, who have received relatively scant scholarly attention individually and almost no attention as a group. This study examines this group of realists, primarily through its founder, Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi, whose systematic commitments inspired a larger group of realists, who variously adapted the position to their own needs, followed it to the point of orthodoxy or developed it further. Throughout the study, I  examine these various ways of being a realist in Jacobi's sense and  argue that there are many shared characteristics, commitments and lines of argumentation that the realists have in common with the idealists.

In the second volume of his Auswahl vermischter Schriften (1797), Reinhold
surprisingly announced his decision to abandon his Elementarphilosophie
and instead to accept Fichte’s Wissenschaftslehre. Reinhold gives a brief account
of the reasons that led him to make this radical shift. According to this account,
Reinhold’s main reason for abandoning the Elementarphilosophie was the impossibility
to explain the empirical content or matter of representation on the basis
of his theory. Furthermore, I will show that, on his own account, Reinhold did
not recognise the fatal weakness of the Elementarphilosophie through the Wissenschaftslehre
but rather through Jacob Sigismund Beck’s criticisms in his Einzig-
möglicher Standpunct (1796). After thus having realised the failure of the Elementarphilosophie,
Reinhold accepted Fichte’s system because it was the best
alternative at hand.

This monograph discusses the importance of A. L. Hülsen's only book for the history of early German idealism. The Wissenschaftslehre is Fichte's "response" to the objections of Schulze-Aenesidemus to Reinhold's early Elementarphilosophie. Hülsen, a Fichtean thinker, restructured many aspects of Reinhold's system which Fichte left intact. In 1797, Fichte recognized Hülsen as a partner in the development of his system, thus acknowledging his contribution to the emergence of German idealism.

Karl Leonhard Reinhold’s and Friedrich Schiller’s conception of drive can be interpreted as a systematic response to a theoretical ambivalence that can be found in Kant’s conception of “drive” and “driving force”. For on the one hand, a “drive” is, according to Kant, something that belongs to our nature and is therefore heteronomous. Reinhold distinguishes between a selfish(“eigennütziger”)and an unselfish (“uneigennütziger”) drive. Both drives are, according to Reinhold “driving forcesof the will”,insofar as they are “engaged in the arbitrary (“willkürlich”) satisfaction or frustration of our desire”. In doing so, Reinhold revaluates the drive as something that is compatiblewith our freedom of the will: they incline our will but do not necessitate it. They are, so to speak, the vital basis of our free decision.Schiller distinguishes between three kinds of drive. Theobject of theform drive (“Formtrieb”) is the Gestaltof the world, its intelligible structure and necessity, whereas the object of the material drive (“Stofftrieb”) is the human life and its sensual reality. In opposition to Reinhold, Schiller introduces a third drive that he calls the “play drive”(“Spieltrieb”). However, it is not an instance additional to the material and form drive, but rather designates the unity of both drives, in which “sensibility and reason are active at the same time”. Schiller calls this state a “higher necessity”that is similarto Harry Frankfurt’s conception of a “volitional necessity”and which describes our individual freedom.
