Transcendence and Power. Carl Schmitt's Political Theology

L' opera di CarI Schmitt (1888-1985) rappresenta una delle più forti provocazioni del pensiero del Novecento. La sua ricerca intellettuale e politica spazia nei diversi ambiti del diritto costituzionale e internazionale, della filosofia e della scienza della politica, della storia delle istituzioni, della letteratura e della teologia e si intreccia singolarmente con le vicende più drammatiche della storia contemporanea, in particolare
con la fine della repubblica di Weimar e con i primi anni del regime nazista, che lo vedono coinvolto in ruoli di primo piano. Il suo pensiero, riscoperto in questi ultimi anni, si trova oggi al centro di un serrato dibattito e di accese controversie.
Una delle provocazioni più significative di Schmitt è quella legata alla sua interpretazione del concetto di "teologia politica", un concetto destinato, pur con diverse interpretazioni, ad avere notevole fortuna nel pensiero teologico del '900, tanto da essere ancora oggi al centro dell'attenzione. Questo volume ricostruisce analiticamente, a partire dai primi
scritti fino alle ultime elaborazioni, la genesi, lo sviluppo e le applicazioni del concetto di "teologia politica" collocandolo sullo sfondo della sua ricerca e analizzando le reazioni e le critiche suscitate negli ambienti filosofici e teologici. Dall'angolo visuale della "teologia politica" l'intera opera schmittiana riceve una nuova e suggestiva luce e assume in certo senso valore di simbolo dell'itinerario della riflessione contemporanea sul politico, sul potere e sul suo ineliminabile riferimento alla trascendenza.

Starting from Karl Löwith’s Mitanthropologie, my paper aims to put forward a principle disappointability conceived as a “trust gradient” for the interhuman dimension.
Löwith’s Mitanthropologie develops a taxonomy of the different binary
bonds, at the top of which emerges the “absolute relationship between an I self and a you self”. The peculiarity of this bond is based on trust and responsibility. In order to prove the responsible and trust-based intentionality of the two relata, I propose the principle disappointability, inspired by Popper’s principle of falsification. The authenticity of a relationship depends on the fact that each relatum responds entirely for itself within the space of Miteinandersein. In other words, I can show my trust (in my co-relatum) only if I en-trust (to it). Such a total entrusting can be attested only by the fact that I am “falsifiable”, namely “disappointable”. The principle disappointability emerges therefore as a natural “trust gradient”.

Ez a rövid tanulmány a történelemfilozófia-kritikák nézőpontjából vizsgálja a „klasszikus” horkheimeri kritikai elméletet (amelynek explicit kifejtése az 1937-ben megjelent Hagyományos és kritikai elméletben lelhető fel). Különös figyelmet érdemel ugyanis az a tény, hogy Horkheimer gondolkodásában központi helyet foglal el a történelemfilozófia, annak ellenére, hogy a Hegel utáni gondolkodás alapvetően történelemfilozófia-ellenes. Miért tartja mégis szükségesnek Horkheimer a történetfilozófiai gondolkodás megújítását, milyen szerepet szán a történelemfilozófiának? A tanulmányban áttekintem a huszadik század legjellegzetesebb történelemfilozófia-kritikáit, segítségükkel kritikai szempontból vizsgálom Horkheimer Hagyományos és kritikai elmélet című művének történelem-koncepcióját. A tanulmány további részében felvázolom, miért tartotta volna fontosnak Horkheimer ezeknek a kritikáknak a kiküszöbölését. Egy ilyen vizsgálat a következő kérdésre hívhatja fel figyelmünket: legitim módja-e a történelemfilozófia az emberről és jelenlegi létmódjáról való gondolkodásnak, illetve azzá válhat-e újra?

This paper aims to present the interpretation of Così è (se vi pare) (1918) given by Karl Löwith in his habilitation thesis, namely L'individuo nel ruolo del co-uomo (1928). The investigation of Pirandello's role within the framework of Löwith's Mitanthropologie («With-Anthropology») also equates to the demonstration of his presence in the European philosophical landscape of his age. The description of the basic features of the Mitanthropologie, i.e. a phenomenology of the relationality (§ 1), will be followed by the investigation of the role played by Pirandello within such a theoretical framework (§ 2). In particular, I will try to emphasize the philosophical meaning of Pirandello's topics (first and foremost the idea of an Alsmensch-i.e., «maskman»-personified by the character of Signora Ponza) comparing them with Heidegger's existential analytic and his idea of Dasein (§ 3). The final goal of this attempt is the possible accomplishment of an anthropological paradigm, that within Löwith's habilitation thesis is just sketched (§ 4).

Karl Löwith’s "Meaning in History" presents the emergence of modern philosophy of history as a secularization of medieval theology of history. His thesis holds that modern historical consciousness transposes into the immanent frame a constitutively transcendent element: the Christian history of salvation. In The "Legitimacy of the Modern Age" Hans Blumenberg impugns Löwith’s theory, by arguing that it works on the erroneous assumption that there would be a substantial content originally possessed by medieval Christianity and only later illegitimately appropriated by modernity. Blumenberg proposes that Löwith’s “transposition” hypothesis must be replaced by his own “reoccupation”: the modern vision of history would have thus taken up the place of Christian eschatology. This paper contends that Blumenberg fails to see that he and his opponent are arguing at different epistemological levels: while Blumenberg’s discussion operates at the level of the efficient causation of history, Löwith’s is focused on the philosophical root of the teleology of the modern idea of progress, which explains this notion as a transposition of the eschaton into a purely immanent telos.

Hans Blumenberg (1920-1996) é um dos maiores filósofos da segunda metade do século XX. Autor de uma obra gigantesca, o seu estilo sinuoso não parece conter nenhuma tese fundamental, ainda que se ramifique por entre temas tão diversos tais como a metaforologia, o desenvolvimento da racionalidade científica, o historicismo ou as fragilidades da fenomenologia. O pensamento blumenberguiano manifesta o esforço mais radical para pensar o falhanço de qualquer forma de metafísica, o fracasso de todos os absolutismos: ontológicos, teológicos, científicos e de qualquer realismo. Entre as ruínas da metafísica, este lúcido herdeiro do Iluminismo dedica-se ao paciente trabalho de devolver à razão uma margem de manobra face aos absolutismos que escondem o carácter contingente do sóbrio trabalho de uma razão que se assume como finita. E se a nossa circunstância é o horizonte de uma Modernidade inultrapassável, a nossa situação apela para a reactivação possível do projecto kantiano: o de uma radical antropologia filosófica.

In this paper (written in Dutch), I evaluated one of the most imporant debate in philosophy of history, namely the debate on secularization between Karl Löwith and Hans Blumenberg. By comparing Löwith's "Meaning in History" with the oeuvre of Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Burckhardt, I criticized Blumenberg's position. At the end of this paper, I also analyzed Charles Taylor's position in this debate.

Esta dissertação de mestrado tem por objetivo refletir sobre a filosofia de Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), compreendida como tentativa de superação tanto da metafísica quanto do niilismo. Destaca-se a valorização nietzschiana de um pensamento dotado de senso histórico, fiel ao devir ininterrupto do real, o que implica em uma cosmovisão
semelhante à de Heráclito. Defende-se que a posição peculiar de Nietzsche na história da filosofia moral consiste na análise crítica da multiplicidade de diferentes valorações morais, sempre remetidas a suas fontes humanas (demasiado humanas). Através da atenção às circunstâncias e condições de surgimento, desenvolvimento e ocaso dos diversos ideais, valores morais e doutrinas religiosas, procuramos mostrar como Nietzsche constitui uma filosofia que rompe com a noção de valores divinos e imutáveis, além de des-estabilizar crenças em verdades absolutas. De modo a ilustrar o método genealógico nietzschiano em operação, investigam-se fenômenos como o ressentimento e o ascetismo, re-inseridos no fluxo histórico e compreendidos a partir de seus pressupostos psicológicos, fisiológicos e sócio-políticos. Com base em ampla pesquisa bibliográfica da obra de Nietzsche e comentadores (como Jaspers, Wotling, Rosset, Giacoiua, Moura, Ferraz, dentre outros), argumenta-se que a filosofia nietzschiana realiza uma ultrapassagem da cisão platônico-cristã entre dois mundos, além de uma superação do dualismo entre corpo e espírito. Procura-se descrever como a filosofia anti-idealista de Nietzsche, avessa ao absolutismo e ao  sobrenaturalismo, age como uma “escola da suspeita”, convidando-nos a um filosofar liberto de subserviência,
credulidade e obediência acrítica à tradição. Explora-se também a temática da “morte de Deus” e da derrocada dos valores judaico-cristãos, além da concomitante escalada do
niilismo, no contexto de uma filosofia que busca sugerir e abrir novas vias para a aventura humana ao mobilizar conceitos como amor fati, além-do-homem e “fidelidade à terra”. Nietzsche é compreendido não somente em seu potencial crítico, demolidor da tradição idealista e metafísica, mas também como criador de uma sabedoria trágica e dionisíaca que se posiciona nas antípodas tanto dos ideais ascéticos quanto dos ideários niilistas.

Against the intellectual backdrop of mounting uncertainty concerning the secular nature of modernity, the present study reconstructs a philosophical debate in Germany, concerning the origins and legitimacy of the modern age as a secular age. This debate was carried out between Hans Blumenberg, Karl Löwith and Carl Schmitt, between about 1950 and 1980. Blumenberg's little-known early work is considered as a preliminary to his best-known book, Die Legitimität der Neuzeit, in which he attacked Schmitt and Löwith for propounding versions of a theorem whereby modern thought consisted of "secularized" religious matter. It is also shown to develop other core concepts, notably that of human self-assertion, whilst being charted against Blumenberg's own intellectual self-assertion, his struggle to find a distinctive voice. A historical discussion of the concept of secularization is followed by an examination of Löwith's derivation of the progressivist philosophy of history from Christian eschatology, which is shown to be less straightforward than Löwith's popularizers assumed. Löwith's personal confrontation with Blumenberg having been shown to conceal a deeper affinity in the rejection of apocalyptic thought, the focus shifts to Schmitt's political-theological critique of modernity. Schmitt deploys the secularization theorem to call into question the human autonomy on which Blumenberg founds the modern age's claim to legitimacy. Schmitt is shown to argue against what he perceived to be a human plan to terminate history in an earthly utopia, precluding a divine judgment on history and man. The subsequent debate between Blumenberg and Schmitt in letters and texts reveals fundamental differences concerning the status of man with regard to the absolute, with Schmitt's concept of antagonistic, absolute potencies being pitched against Blumenberg's vision of a division of powers, which he discusses in terms of the myth of Prometheus. In arguing for the autonomy of the modern age, Blumenberg is shown to challenge critiques of civilization which avail themselves of religious rhetoric for political ends.

These are very brief notes on the work of Richard Sorabji, Karl Löwith, Arnaldo Momigliano, and Hayden White. The goal is to summarize some of the main contributions of each author to the study of historiography and historical consciousness. Questions tackled include: Did Greeks, Jews, and Christians have alternate views of history--or of time, for that matter? How do conceptions of history relate to theories of time? Is the historian ever responsible for thinking about the philosophy of time? Or are the philosophy of time and (the philosophy of) history two distinct fields of inquiry?

Die Stoßrichtung von Gadamers Antwort auf den Historismus bleibt in der Forschung ein umstrittenes Thema: Während seine philosophische Hermeneutik einerseits beschuldigt wird, lediglich die Aporien des Historismus zu radikalisieren, sehen andere in ihr die endgültige Überwindung der Problematik. Dieses Essay zeichnet die Linien von Gadamers Kritik anhand einer konkreten, aber heute weitgehend vergessenen Auseinandersetzung mit einer zeitgenössischen Gestalt des Historismus nach. Die sogenannte Problemgeschichte des Neukantianismus diente Gadamer nämlich schon in den 1920er Jahren, aber auch in Wahrheit und Methode (1960) als Folie, um sein Verhältnis zum Historismus zu klären. In einem ersten Schritt wird mit Nicolai Hartmann der meist ungenannte Gegner Gadamers identifiziert. In einem zweiten Schritt wird Gadamers Kritik an Hartmann rekonstruiert, die seine Position als einen Historismus zweiten Grades verständlich macht.

The nature of Gadamer’s response to the challenge of historicism remains a controversial issue. While some scholars claim that his critique only leads deeper into the aporia of historicism, others credit him with overcoming the problem. This essay will elucidate Gadamer’s response to historicism by examining his nearly forgotten critique of a contemporary version of historicism, namely, neo-Kantian Problemgeschichte. As early as the 1920s and again in Truth and Method (1960), Problemgeschichte served as Gadamer’s counterexample by which his own response to historicism was discussed. First, this essay will identify the mostly anonymous addressee of Gadamer’s critique as Nicolai Hartmann. And second, it will give an account of Gadamer’s critique of Hartmann in order to reveal Gadamer’s position as a kind of second-degree historicism.

The article seeks to disclose the phenomenon of Conservative Revolution as an attempt at the fullest projection of Nietzscheanism in philosophical and social fields, in particular, resting on the work of its face and recognized Nietzschean Ernst Jünger who earned it the fame of the "supermodern." In turn, results of polemic by Martin Heidegger, another key thinker of this current, with omnipresent in Jünger's work Friedrich Nietzsche's motif of the transvaluation of all values have become not only the deepest philosophical reconstruction, criticism and "upgrading" of Nietzscheanism but also the groundbreaking milestone of Nietzsche-studies and, as of now, the pinnacle of discussions on the prospects for overcoming nihilism and a new Western metaphysics.

Den Kontext dieser Arbeit bildet die Säkularisierungsdebatte der 1960er Jahre in Deutschland, genauer das sogenannte „Säkularisierungstheorem“, demzufolge viele als originell neuzeitlich geltende, das moderne Selbstverständnis prägende Inhalte und Konzepte tatsächlich säkularisierte christliche sind. Das Thema dieser Arbeit ist Hans Blumenbergs Kritik am Säkularisierungstheorem, die dieser im ersten Teil seiner Legitimität der Neuzeit vortrug und in welchem er sich insbesondere mit den Theorien Löwiths, Gadamers, Kosellecks und Schmitts befasst. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, 1/ ein geistesgeschichtliches Panorama der Säkularisierungsdebatte zu entwerfen, unter Berücksichtigung der Begriffsgeschichte von „Säkularisierung“ sowie des Gebrauchs der Kategorie Säkularisierung in verschiedenen Kontexten, 2/ eine konzise Darstellung der philosophischen Position Hans Blumenbergs in der Debatte sowie der Grundprinzipien einer Phänomenologie der Geschichte zu geben, 3/ eine Analyse der Argumente Blumenbergs unter rhetorischen Gesichtspunkten zu skizzieren. With the rise of political populism across Europe, there is an increased investment in religion. Examples range from the apocalyptic rhetoric employed by far-right movements to seemingly more innocent references to Christian symbols as identity markers by established parties. A recurring feature in these discourses is the concept of crisis. In this essay, I discuss these tendencies by putting them in a larger historical perspective. More precisely, I examine how European narratives of crisis have been related to religion in different eras by different factions and with varying intentions.

In questo libro, uscito presso Queriniana all'inizio del 2019, ricostruisco il dibattito recente sulla secolarizzazione, analizzando i lavori di H. Blumenberg, D. Martin, C. Taylor, H. Joas, T. Asad, M. Gauchet, J. Habermas e G. Vattimo. La tesi principale del libro è che ciò a cui abbiamo assistito negli ultimi 50 anni è un vero e proprio cambio di paradigma che ha influenzato sia i decostruttori sia i manutentori della teoria classica. In der vorliegenden Untersuchung wird der Versuch unternommen, das Problem der menschlichen Identität von der Vorstellung der geschlossenen Autonomie bzw. der Heteronomie des menschlichen Selbst zu befreien. Anhand der praktischen Philosophie Martin Heideggers (frühe Vorlesungen 1919-26 und "Sein und Zeit") sowie der Anthropologie Karl Löwiths ("Das Individuum in der Rolle des Mitmenschen") wird der Begriff des sozialen Charakters menschlichen Selbstverstehens und der Selbstbestimmung dargestellt. Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, auf elementare soziale Lebensformen zu verweisen, durch welche sich der Sinn der menschlichen Handlungen und damit des Menschseins ausdrücken lässt. Den Hauptkontext der Untersuchung bildet eine Kritik des monologischen Daseinsbegriffs, den Heidegger in seinem Hauptwerk ausarbeitet. Mithilfe der in Vergessenheit geratenen Frühanthropologie Löwiths wird die monologische Perspektive der Fundamentalontologie um die Problematik der dialogischen und sozialen Verhältnisse erweitert.

Introduzione alla traduzione italiana di “Das Individuum in der Rolle des Mitmenschen” (“L’individuo nel ruolo del co-uomo”, Guida, Napoli 2007), scritto di abilitazione di Karl Löwith, discusso presso la Philipps-Universität di Marburgo il 15 dicembre 1927 (relatore Heidegger) e pubblicato l’anno successivo.
Attraverso una rigorosa fenomenologia della vita di relazione (del Miteinandersein nelle sue molteplici declinazioni), Löwith delinea un paradigma antropologico personalistico al culmine del quale emerge la figura del Mitmensch (co-uomo) che, fissato formalmente “come io di un tu”, si propone alternativo tanto al concetto di individuo che al Dasein heideggeriano.

Interrogarsi sul presente comporta la messa in discussione di ogni pretesa assolutizzazione dell’esistente. Non dobbiamo perciò cadere nell’errore di sentirci alla “fine della storia”, sull’orlo del baratro, come se altri uomini prima di noi non si fossero trovati ad affrontare la crisi: l’intera vicenda umana è caratterizzata da amare tribolazioni, imprevisti successi e brucianti sconfitte, in un eterno ciclo di ascesa e declino. L’Apocalittica è sintomo della crisi e contrassegna di conseguenza il nostro presente: l’essenza umana non è però mutata, il confronto con le Cose Ultime, con la Morte, è ancora e più che mai presente. Ma volendo credere, a ragione dell’evoluzione del progresso storico, in una perfettibilità umana non possiamo che rivolgerci alla storia che sta alle nostre spalle, interrogando le vite e le azioni di altri uomini che, proprio come noi, si sono trovati a dover interpretare e significare la crisi. Una simile indagine non può dunque non attingere a piene mani ad un lavoro quale quello di Karl Löwith, Significato e fine della storia: tesi principale che guida l’intera ricerca löwithiana è il fondamento teologico giudaico-cristiano della filosofia della storia. La ricerca di un significato della storia coincide con la ricerca di una fine ultima di essa: in questo senso l’eschaton, il Regno di Dio ultimo, è un concetto che secolarizzandosi ha acquisito un diverso nome, sia esso l’infinito Progresso illuministico, o il Regno della Libertà a venire, perseguito dal comunismo.
Alla base di questa tesi sta dunque la convinzione che l’uomo indaghi e crei la narrazione di se stesso e dell’universo a partire da un elemento di trascendenza della realtà, di messa in discussione dell’ordine presente.
L’elaborato si sviluppa in tre capitoli: nel primo viene delineata la dottrina di Gioacchino da Fiore, monaco e teologo del XII secolo, che avrà grande risonanza nei posteri e aprirà le porte del futuro Regno in un aldiquà terreno, distaccandosi dall’orizzonte escatologico metastorico affermato da Agostino in poi, riaprendo la possibilità di azione nel mondo; nel secondo capitolo si delinea la figura storica di un religioso rivoluzionario del Cinquecento, Thomas Müntzer, il quale, sulla base di una solida elaborazione teologica basata sulla Scrittura, porta alle estreme conseguenze quella libertà del soggetto che la Riforma luterana aveva slegato dalle catene; l’ultimo capitolo infine illustra la ricerca effettuata da un filosofo e rabbino del Novecento, Jacob Taubes, che come un rabdomante attraversa il corso storico con la sua bacchetta, alla ricerca delle categorie di apocalissi, messianismo ed escatologia.
La κρίσις può essere solo fecondamente affrontata e analizzata da uomini inquieti, errabondi, in crisi essi stessi: Gioacchino, Thomas Müntzer, Jacob Taubes, così come Karl Marx, Søren Kierkegaard e Ernst Bloch, sentono di vivere tutti nel tempo della crisi, crisi che è però καιρος, momento speciale, tempo proficuo per l’azione.

Seguendo una suggestione di Karl Löwith, secondo il quale: «l’antropologia diviene filosofica solamente con questa enorme domanda che riguarda il rapporto dell’uomo con il mondo», queste pagine prendono a tema l’eclettica figura di Carl Gustav Carus, in particolare la sua singolare interpretazione del rapporto tra uomo e natura, tra psyche e physis. Si tratta di un plesso tematico del tutto centrale tanto nella sua produzione artistica quanto in quella scientifica quanto in quella strettamente filosofica; plesso retto dalla convinzione che «la chiave per conoscere l’essenza della vita psichica cosciente si trova nella regione dell’inconscio».
Attraverso l’attenzione dedicata al pensiero di Carus, ci si pone anche il più generale obiettivo di battere un “sentiero interrotto” della modernità filosofica: quello di un’antropologia cosmocentrica ("physiologica") nella quale l’intreccio fra uomo e mondo, dell’uomo entro la totalità cosmica non deve essere postulato e costruito, ma vale come la precondizione originaria che di fatto sempre è. Come scrive ancora Löwith, è solo considerando «quei fenomeni ordinari e quotidiani […] i quali collegano le fasi vitali con la natura della vita organica e con il mondo naturale», che  è possibile cogliere «i limiti della tradizionale antropologia filosofica dello spirito o dell’autocoscienza».

È la questione del tempo, del divenire, a muovere e a mettere in agitazione "Il bibliotecario di Leibniz. Filosofia e romanzo", ultimo libro di Sergio Givone. La trattazione si snoda a partire da un bersaglio polemico:
la filosofia della storia. Ma, come si conviene in un agone filosofico, la lotta trae il suo pieno significato solo se la contrapposizione tra i lottanti non è fine a se stessa, ma si svolge sullo sfondo delle cose stesse. Solo cosÌ l'orizzonte del domandare perviene alla sua ampiezza più propria. Ed è ciò che fa Givone, il cui confronto con la filosofia della storia è una sorta di "Leitfrage" (domanda-guida) che introduce alla "Grundfrage" (domanda-fondamentale)del suo lavoro. Siffatta questione di fondo può essere espressa con le parole dell'autore medesimo: «La ragione metafisica è il pensiero della verità senza il tempo. Il nichilismo è il pensiero del tempo senza la verità. E se invece si aprisse lo spazio per un pensiero che cerca la verità nel tempo e nel tempo vede il luogo della verità?». In questa icastica esposizione del problema emerge anche la connessione diretta con il nostro tema di indagine, il nichilismo, intorno a cui Givone non cessa di interrogarsi.

Karl Löwith (1897-1973), a German-Jewish philosopher, who studied with Martin Heidegger and was obliged to leave Germany during the Nazizeit, stayed in Japan from 1936 to 1941 as professor of philosophy at Tôhoku University in Sendai. The aim of my paper is to clarify the meaning of his stay in Japan for his philosophizing from intercultural point of view.
In 1940, before leaving Japan for the USA, Löwith published an article for Japanese readers entitled “European Nihilism,” in which he, as a representative of European intellectuals, criticized Japanese thinking as follows: in contrast to European thinking that is to be characterized by a continual process of organic appropriation, Japanese thinking consists of “two floors,” namely the first floor where the Japanese think in a Japanese way and the second floor where they think in a western way, and it lacks the “ladder” that connects these two floors.
Almost ten years later, the late Löwith raised objections against European historicism by insisting that “modern spirit looks at the world with two different eyes: with that of belief and with that of reason, and this is why its sight is necessarily dull, as compared to Greek or Biblical thinking.” Löwith’s critical sight enabled him to discover even in European thinking two floors that are not connected by a ladder.
In a global and intercultural era, in which because of cultural exchange each culture inevitably come to consist of several floors that are often in collision and the borders of floors tend to diminish, Löwith’s critical sight that detects in a culture several floors might gain importance.

The aim of this paper is to highlight both the ambivalence and the radicalism of Löwith’s position. The first part of this paper focuses on the historicization of historicism itself, that is, on what Löwith means by historicization and on the main steps of this process. The second part shows some of the reasons that can explain this project, more precisely why Löwith does not think that historicism can be answered by recurring to a normative foundation, but has to be the starting point of any attempt to overcome it. In other words, I attempt to explain why the given existential and historical situations are, for Löwith, unavoidable. Finally, the third part highlights the theoretical rationale for the historicization of historicism, that is, the role of this project in Löwith’s philosophy, whose attempts to deconstruct the modern historical consciousness ground on an opposition between the historical and the natural world.

La posibilidad de que hoy lo humano tenga cabida y significado en un mundo indiferente a su realidad depende de la elaboración prosaica de mundos con sentido, tarea en la que diariamente todos nos empeñamos. Nuestra esencial carencia de esencia nos lanza a la tarea de nadar, dando rodeos para dilatar el naufragio. Por ello, el sentido del hombre habita más en el trabajo de mantenernos a flote que en el arribo a un puerto definitivo, más en el arte de sobrevivir en alta mar con los recursos que disponemos a la mano para no ahogarnos, que en dominar las corrientes venciendo el mar en una nave totalmente segura. Inquietud flotante, que ha de aprender a oscilar con los vaivenes del océano, somos una nave hecha con las olas. La nave que somos.
El libro aborda la problemática antropológica desde una perspectiva filosófica, en el marco de las tradiciones fenomenológicas, hermenéuticas y deconstructivas contemporáneas, que han encontrado en las obras de Martin Heidegger, Jacques Derrida y Hans Blumenberg, destacados representantes. En el trasfondo de estas navegaciones resuena, sin ser dominante, un diálogo con el pensamiento reaccionario de Nicolás Gómez Dávila y las críticas de fondo al proyecto antropológico de la modernidad.

Partendo da un breve inquadramento della situazione descritta  da Weber con l'espressione "politeismo dei valori", intendo discutere le istanze che essa suscita tramite un confronto tra Cassirer e Löwith.
Introduco Cassirer a partire da L'idea di costituzione repubblicana, testo che da un lato è espressione dell'orientamento illuminista dell'autore, dall'altro è interessante come esempio operativo della sua idea di capacità del pensiero (filosofico) di influenzare l'agire politico. Si tratta di un punto estremamente problematico, da leggere nei suoi sviluppi in rapporto ai testi successivi, nei quali emergono il disincanto e l'autocritica del "vecchio marburghese". Tale autocritica di Cassirer va letta secondo due direttive: in primo luogo quella teorica, relativa alla revisione della precedente concezione evolutivo-progressiva delle forme simboliche e delle relative forme di coscienza, sviluppata nella Filosofia delle forme simboliche e messa in crisi dalla constatazione del riemergere di forme mitiche della coscienza. In secondo luogo va analizzata la riflessione sul ruolo e sul concetto della filosofia e del filosofare. Cassirer riafferma la concezione kantiana del ruolo cosmico della filosofia: nell'interpretazione cassireriana, la filosofia deve assumere il ruolo di sentinella dei valori e dei principi morali della società. In tal senso Cassirer riafferma l'influenza del pensiero e della riflessione sull'azione, assegnando un compito e un valore alla pratica filosofica. Uno dei bersagli di questa critica, se non il maggiore, è Heidegger: molta della discussione relativa ai miti politici ha a che fare con le conseguenze politiche dell'Existenzialphilosophie di Essere e tempo. 
Due aspetti, tra gli altri, rendono interessante l'accostamento della riflessione di Cassirer a quella di Löwith: da un lato il confronto con Heidegger, obiettivo polemico cruciale per entrambi,  con la temporalità come punto centrale della critica; dall'altro l'instaurarsi di un rapporto problematico con il pensiero teologico: laddove la filosofia non è riuscita a riconoscere la crisi prima che fosse troppo tardi, sono stati dei teologi a denunciare le mancanze della riflessione e a portare avanti con le proprie scelte di vita una condotta esemplare e al contempo critica. Passando dunque a Löwith, il problema è duplice: analizzare da un lato i punti cardine del suo confronto con Heidegger, incentrato sulle questioni della temporalità e della decisione, e metterne in luce la portata politica e quella filosofica. In secondo luogo, esplicitare la concezione di filosofia come skepsi e ricerca praticata e teorizzata da Löwith, ponendola in rapporto contrastivo con il pensiero teologizzante di Rosenzweig.

This paper presents and discusses Karl Löwith's anthropological critique of existential analytic that is formulated in his Habilitation thesis (Das Individuum in der Rolle des Mitmenschen, 1928), where he develops an anthro-pological counter-paradigm, i. e. Mitanthropologie, in opposition to Heidegger's fundamental ontology. Given the extent and the complexity of such a subject, I will limit the present inquiry to two specific topics: the Miteinandersein (Being-with-one-another) and above all the Sein zum Tode (Being-towards-death). In practice, I will first explain the basic features of Mitanthropologie together with the crucial critique that it levels at Being and Time. I will follow by outlining the importance of the Todesfrage (the question of death) within the existential analytic by means of a comparison between Heidegger's Being-towards-death and Kierkegaard's Sickness unto death (Krankheit zum Tode). Finally, I will expound Löwith's objection to Being-towards-death, which is expressed in the alternative formula Freiheit zum Tode (Freedom-towards-death).

this paper deals with one of the main issue i wish to treat in my project. The thinkers of the frankfurt school and the others heterodox marxist thinkers used to express concepts and words from a theological origin. Our main question here, is to read their attenpt under the prism of the theories of secularization.
