In the domain of motion event encoding, many of the world’s languages fall into one of two types: verb-framed (the path is encoded in the verb) or satellite-framed (the path is encoded outside the verb in a prefix, particle or adverbial while the verb contains information about the manner of movement). A number of studies have investigated the language usage of bilingual speakers or language learners to find evidence of a transfer of the typological pattern of the dominant/native language to the non-dominant/foreign language. These studies have largely failed to show evidence of a straightforward transfer, although more subtle effects on usage have occasionally been observed. In the present paper, we combine qualitative and quantitative analyses in an investigation of linguistic coherence. We propose a view of coherence as an interpretation of empirical observations rather than something that would be “out there in the data”, and argue that this interpretation should be based on evidence of systematic links between linguistic phenomena, as established by patterns of covariation between phenomena that can be shown to be related at linguistic levels.
Against this background, we identify as a particularly interesting domain for investigations into coherence the new urban dialects that have emerged in multiethnic and multilingual Europe over the last decades. These dialects emerge in highly diverse contexts characterised by a large range of contact situations, diverse repertoires, and the fast pace of language variation and change this brings with it, thus providing an interesting challenge for assumptions of coherence.
For our case study, we choose a set of phenomena that have been described for Kiezdeutsch, a new dialect from multilingual urban Germany. Qualitative analyses point to linguistic relationships between different phenomena and between pragmatic and linguistic levels. Quantitative analyses, based on corpus data from KiDKo, point to systematic differences between the main corpus KiDKo/Mu, with data from a multiethnic and multilingual context, and the complementary corpus KiDKo/Mo, with data from a mostly monoethnic and monolingual (German) context, showing advantages for the Kiezdeutsch data provided by KiDKo/Mu.
Taken together, this indicates patterns of covariation that support an interpretation of coherence for this new dialect: our findings point to an interconnected linguistic system, rather than to a mere accumulation of individual features. We show that accounting for Kiezdeutsch as a systematic variety along these lines does not entail separating it from other variants of German. Rather, its characteristics are embedded in the general range of options in contemporary German, pointing not only to internal coherence, but also to something we could call external coherence, that is, an integration with other variants of German.

I bring together two research strands that rarely interact and might even seem incom-mensurable, namely sociolinguistic approaches to linguistic fluidity and multi-competence on the one hand, and structural approaches to linguistic coherence and grammatical systems on the other hand. I show that we can reconcile insights from these two strands in a linguistic architecture that takes communicative situations as the core of linguistic systematicity, and integrates them into lexical representations. Under this view, communicative situations are the basis for linguistic coherence and grammatical systems, while languages can emerge as optional sociolinguistic indices.

Taking a comparative perspective on European and African settings, this chapter describes several contact dialects that emerged in multilingual and multiethnic urban contexts among young people. These dialects emerge as peer-group markers of a new generation of locally born speakers who grow up in multiethnic urban communities based on (internal or external) immigration. In different societal contexts, they take on different forms of contact-linguistic codes: the societal multilingualism typical for many African countries supports the formation of Multilingual Mixed Languages, whereas the monolingual bias in European societies favours new variants of the respective majority languages, which involve contact-induced as well as contact-facilitated language change. In both cases, standard language ideologies can lead to negative views of urban contact dialects in the larger society; in European nation states, the devaluation of these dialects can also serve as a proxy for the devaluation of their speakers, who are constructed as social and ethnic 'Others'.

Kiezdeutsch ist ein Sprachgebrauch, den Schüler/inne/n meist gut kennen; viele verwenden es auch in ihrer eigenen Alltagssprache. Diese Vertrautheit und das oft große Interesse an Kiezdeutsch kann man sich im Deutschunterricht zu Nutze machen, um die Reflexion über Sprache und Grammatik und den Umgang mit grammatischen Regeln und Begrifflichkeiten zu fördern. Wir stellen multimediale Materialien vor, mit denen Schüler/innen selbst zu Sprachforscher/innen werden und in Form von Gruppenarbeit die systematischen Regeln, die auch Kiezdeutsch-Phänomenen zugrunde liegen, aufspüren und denen des Standarddeutschen gegenüberstellen. Die Materialien fördern auf unterhaltsame Weise einen aktiven Umgang mit Grammatik, zeigen sprachliche Kompetenzen auch außerhalb des Standarddeutschen auf und fördern ein positives sprachliches Selbstbild, das Schüler/innen beim Ausbau des Standarddeutschen und der schulischen „Bildungssprache“ unterstützt. In Folge von Migration und generell gestiegener Mobilität ist das moderne Europa geprägt durch eine große Diversität, die sich auch auf sprachlicher Ebene niederschlägt. Insbesondere in den urbanen Zentren findet sich ein hohes Maß an Mehrsprachigkeit: Viele Sprecher/innen beherrschen nicht nur die Majoritätssprache des jeweiligen Landes, sondern bringen daneben ein breites Spektrum unterschiedlicher Herkunftssprachen ein. Solche vielsprachigen Kontexte entwickeln eine besondere Dynamik, insbesondere in der generell sehr dynamischen Gruppe der jugendlichen Sprecher/innen. In den letzten Jahrzehnten sind hier neue sprachliche Praktiken in den Blick der Forschung geraten, die unter anderem als (Multi-)Ethnolekte, neue Dialekte oder neue urbane Umgangssprachen charakterisiert wurden. Der Beitrag fasst unterschiedlichen Aspekte für das deutsche Beispiel zusammen und bezieht sich dabei auf grammatische und soziolinguistische Forschungsergebnisse zu einem Sprachgebrauch, der unter anderem als „Kiezdeutsch“ bekannt ist (etwa Wiese 2009, 2012; Jannedy 2010; Canoğlu 2012; Du Bois 2013). Ich gebe zunächst einige Beispiele für grammatische Entwicklungen in Kiezdeutsch, gehe dann auf den Status von Kiezdeutsch im sprachlichen Repertoire ein und beschreibe abschließend die öffentliche Wahrnehmung hierzu.

This paper investigates a public debate in Germany that put a special spotlight on the interaction of standard language ideologies with social dichotomies, centering on the question of whether “Kiezdeutsch”, a new way of speaking from multilingual urban neighbourhoods, is a legitimate German dialect. Based on a corpus of emails and postings to media websites, I analyse central topoi in this debate and an underlying narrative on language and identity. Central elements of this narrative are claims of cultural elevation and cultural unity for an idealised standard language “High German”, a view of German dialects as part of a national folk culture, and the construction of an exclusive in-group of “German” speakers who own this language and its dialects. The narrative provides a potent conceptual frame for the Othering of Kiezdeutsch and its speakers, and for the projection of social and sometimes racist deliminations onto the linguistic plane.

Certain recently-attested varieties of Germanic V2 languages are known to deviate from the strict V2 requirement characteristic of the standard. This is the case, for example, for Kiezdeutsch, a new German dialect, as well as urban vernacular varieties of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish: descriptively speaking, in these varieties, subject-verb inversion may be absent under certain well-defined conditions. In this article I outline those conditions and the type of syntactic analysis required to account for them, claiming that an articulated left periphery is needed to account for the findings. The similarity of the V3 patterns found in these new varieties, which are geographically isolated from each other but which share a characterization in terms of the demographics of their speaker groups, invites a diachronic account in terms of language contact. I argue that transfer cannot account for V3, but that a scenario of sequential simplification and complexification is able to do so. Finally, turning to Old English, which exhibits similar (though not identical) V2/V3 alternations, I argue that a similar synchronic analysis can be upheld and that its diachronic origins may well also have been similar—a case of using the present to inform our approach to the past.

Youth languages in urban multicultural settings that are often labelled
“multiethnolects” have received growing attention in the last two
decades. In public debate, they are sometimes described as a step
towards imminent “creolisation.” Judgements about Creoles and
multiethnolects that form part of public debates show considerable
similarities on many levels: Laypersons’ metalinguistic commentary
reveals that these two types of languages are held in low esteem in
public opinion. They are sometimes seen as the results of linguistic
decay with “impoverished” grammars that are allegedly a hindrance
for mental and moral development of the speakers and also a sign for
the lack thereof. In addition, research on these languages has been
dismissed as a “waste of resources” given that it does not contribute
to a desired refinement of language. An analysis of 1,240 comments
about multiethnolects and Creoles in online discussions shows that
contact phenomena trigger demands for purity and conservation that
reproduce commonplace arguments from standard language ideology.
The aim of this paper is to shed light on shared discourse patterns in
Creole societies (Jamaica, Trinidad, Réunion, Mauritius) on the one
hand, and European societies (Germany, Norway, the Netherlands)
on the other. Such a comparative perspective reveals how standard
language ideologies can be adapted in different contexts as means of
delegitimising entire speech communities.

This chapter looks at cities as vibrant sites of language contact. Urban areas have always been a magnet for immigration, from surrounding areas as well as from more distant regions and other countries, and as a result they have always been characterised by a rich diversity of social groups, (sub-)cultures, and the different languages, dialects, and styles associated with them. The linguistic fluidity and diversity of cities offers a particularly favourable context for new developments, providing a rich pool of linguistic ressources and ample opportunities for language contact in individuals as well as speech communities. This makes urban areas a hotbed of code mixing, switching, and linguistic innovation leading to new linguistic practices and the emergence of new varieties.

Zusammenfassung
Die Arbeit präsentiert eine qualitative Analyse pronominaler Auslassungen (Pro-Drop) im Kiezdeutschen, einem urbanen Multiethnolekt des Deutschen. Fälle pronominaler Auslassungen werden korpusbasiert diskutiert. Das untersuchte KiezDeutsch-Korpus (2010ff.) besteht aus einem multilingualen Teilkorpus (KiDKo/Mu), das Sprachdaten von Jugendlichen aus Berlin-Kreuzberg enthält und einem monolingulaen Teilkorpus (KiDKo/Mo), in dem Sprachdaten von Jugendlichen aus Berlin-Hellersdorf aufgezeichnet sind. Im multilingualen Teilkorpus lässt sich prozentual mehr Pro-Drop identifizieren als im monolingualen (Wiese & Rehbein 2016). Da türkisch eine der heritage languages der im multilingualen Teilkorpus versammelten Sprecher*innen ist und dieses als Pro-Drop-Sprache gilt, liegt ein Einfluss des Türkischen auf das Kiezdeutsche nahe. Allerdings wurde sogenannter Topic-Drop, der sich vor allem auf Null-Subjekte bezieht, für das Deutsche beschrieben (Trutkowski 2016). Neben Öztürks (2006) Beschreibung des Pro-Drops im Türkischen bildet dieser Aufsatz Trutkowskis eine Grundlage der folgenden Analyse. Um die Annahmen des beeinflussenden Sprachkontakts zu überprüfen, werden nach der theoretischen Einführung der relevanten Begriffe Null-Subjekte und Null-Objekte in den beiden Teilkorpora analysiert. Dabei werden grammatische Funktion, das topologische Feld des Satzes und die Beeinflussung durch sprachliche oder außersprachliche Faktoren berücksichtigt. Die Analyse ergibt, dass Pro-Drop im Kiezdeutschen eine Struktur ist, die mehr Ähnlichkeiten zu Strukturen des (informellen) Standarddeutschen aufweist als zu Strukturen des Türkischen.

Abstract
This paper presents an analysis of pro-drop in Kiezdeutsch, an urban multiethnolect of German primarily spoken by youths. The cases of pro-drop will be investigated by means of linguistic corpus data. The KiezDeutsch-Korpus (2010ff.) consists of a multilingual part (KiDKo/Mu) and a monolingual part (KiDKo/MO). The multilingual part of the corpus contains data recorded by multilingual speakers of Kiezdeutsch from Berlin-Kreuzberg whereas the monolingual part of the corpus contains data recorded by monolingual speakers of German. There is a higher frequency of pro-drop utterances in KiDKo/Mu than in KiDKo/Mo (Wiese & Rehbein 2016). Turkish is one of multilingual speaker’s heritage languages. As Turkish is a pro-drop language, there is a possible influence on Kiezdeutsch. However, so-called topic drop occurs in German as described by Trutkowski (2016). This paper’s analysis is based on Trutkowski’s (2016) results as well as Öztürks (2006) description of pro-drop in Turkish. A theoretical introduction to all relevant concepts is followed by an analysis of the null subjects and null objects in both parts of the corpus to verify the hypothesis of relevant language contact. Grammatical functions, the topological fields of the sentence and linguistic as well as non-linguistic factors which may influence pro-drop will be considered. The conclusion of this paper is that pro-drop in Kiezdeutsch is more similar to grammatical structures of (informal) Standard German and less similar to structures of Turkish.

Mit Rückblick auf die letzten 60 Jahre der Migrationslinguistik 1 (vgl. in diesem Zusammenhang u.a. die Arbeit von Weinreich 1953 2) fällt auf, dass sich das Untersuchungsgebiet gewandelt und erweitert hat. Standen zunächst Fragen des Grammatikerwerbs ausländischer Gastarbeite-rInnen im Fokus des soziolinguistischen Forschungsbereichs (vgl. dazu die Ausführungen in u.a. Dittmar/Klein 1975; Keim 1978), gewinnen gesprächsanalytische Betrachtungen unter-schiedlicher Sprachkontaktphänomene und Sprechergruppen in der 70er und 80er Jahren früh an Raum (vgl. u.a. Quasthoff 1973). Auch wenn das Studium von Sprachkontakten in den letz-ten Jahren in Deutschland zunehmend Beachtung gefunden hat, zeigt sich, dass die einschlägigen Monographien im neuen Jahrtausend vermehrt aus dem anglophonen Sprachraum stammen (vgl. Földes 2010: 134). Ausnahmen – um zwei der thematisch und methodisch ähnlichen, neu-eren Arbeiten aus dem Repertoire der deutschsprachigen Linguistik hervorzuheben – stellen die gesprächsanalytisch orientierte Dissertationsschrift von Katharina König (2014) und die im Ap-ril 2016 erschienene Arbeit von Olga Artamonova dar. Während sich König mit Identitätskon-struktionen junger Deutsch-Vietnamesen auseinandersetzt, geht Artamonova auf (kulturelle) Zugehörigkeitsverhandlungen junger MigrantInnen an einer hessischen Hauptschule ein. Die " Kategorie Ethnie " (u.a. S. 34) und deren Hervorbringung in Unterrichtsinterkationen bleiben im Verlauf der Studie zentral. Mit ihr verbunden sind immer die Fragen: " Wie wird ethnische Zugehörigkeit hervorgehoben? " und " Wie werden kommunikative Ziele umgesetzt, indem die eigene oder fremde Ethnie zum Gegenstand der Interaktion gemacht wird? ". Mit ihrer Arbeit möchte die Autorin die Betrachtungslücke auf unterschiedliche Positionierungsaktivitäten Ju-gendlicher nicht-deutscher Herkunft im schulischen Umfeld schließen und der ambitionierten Frage nachgehen, mit welchen (sprachlichen) Mitteln das " Ausländersein " indiziert wird.
