Literary Anthologies

Η εξέταση της διάστασης του χώρου ως εναλλακτικού τρόπου προσέγγισης της λογοτεχνίας γνωρίζει τα τελευταία χρόνια μία σημαντική ανάπτυξη. Απέναντι στην κυρίαρχη γραμματολογική αντίληψη, η οποία εστιάζει αποκλειστικά στη γραμμική/χρονική εξέταση των λογοτεχνικών φαινομένων (κυρίως του λογοτεχνικού κανόνα), θεωρητικοί του πολιτισμού και της λογοτεχνίας αλλά και ερευνητές εισηγούνται τη διερεύνηση και του χωρικού παράγοντα ως διαμορφωτικού της λογοτεχνικής παραγωγής. Υπό αυτό το πρίσμα, στο βιβλίο εξετάζεται η έννοια της λογοτεχνικής πόλης, με παραδειγματική εφαρμογή στα κείμενα της νεοελληνικής πεζογραφίας που έχουν ως χώρο δράσης τους την πόλη των Ιωαννίνων. Το βιβλίο χωρίζεται σε τρία μέρη: α) Εισαγωγή, β) Τα κείμενα, γ) Βιοεργογραφικά σημειώματα.
Α) «Εισαγωγή». Στο εισαγωγικό μέρος του έργου παρουσιάζονται και αναπτύσσονται τα θεωρητικά ζητήματα που ανακύπτουν από την επιλογή της συγκεκριμένης οπτικής: Η σχέση της λογοτεχνικής με την πραγματική πόλη, η σχέση της αφηγούμενης εντός του λογοτεχνικού κειμένου ιστορίας με την Ιστορία, η μυθοποίηση των ιστορικών γεγονότων, η παρουσία και ο ρόλος υπαρκτών προσώπων της πόλης σε λογοτεχνικά κείμενα. Αναζητούνται τα χαρακτηριστικά εκείνα της λογοτεχνικής πόλης που αποτελούν τα διακριτικά της γνωρίσματα. Καθορίζεται η εικόνα της εντός των κειμένων σε σχέση με άλλες πόλεις, αλλά και την ευρύτερη Ηπειρωτική ενδοχώρα. Εξετάζονται οι σημάνσεις που προσδίδουν στην πόλη οι αφηγητές¬ ήρωες που προέρχονται από αυτήν, καθώς και οι επισκέπτες της. Διακρίνεται ο τρόπος που καταγράφεται στα λογοτεχνικά κείμενα η διαμόρφωση και η εξέλιξη των χαρακτηριστικών της πραγματικής πόλης στο πέρασμα του χρόνου. Επισημαίνεται ο καθοριστικός ρόλος του παράγοντα χρόνου στον προσδιορισμό του λογοτεχνικού χώρου. Όπως τονίζει στον πρόλογό του στο βιβλίο ο σεβασμιότατος Μητροπολίτης Ιωαννίνων κ. Θεόκλητος: η ίδια η πόλη είναι ένα βαρυσήμαντο «σημαίνον». Το άκουσμά του προκαλεί σημαίνοντες συνειρμούς, ανεξήγητους ασύνδετους με συγκεκριμενοποιημένα γεγονότα […] Παίζει κανείς με ακούσματα, φωνές που εκπηγάζουν από τα βάθη του χωροχρονικού συνεχούς το οποίο ονομάσαμε, κατοπινά, ιστορία.
Στην εισαγωγή παρουσιάζονται ακόμη τα κριτήρια ανθολόγησης των λογοτεχνικών κειμένων, αλλά και μία κριτική των όρων σύνθεσης ανάλογων ανθολογιών (τοπικού προσανατολισμού). Στο βιβλίο ανθολογούνται κείμενα της νεοελληνικής πεζογραφίας των τελευταίων εκατό χρόνων τα οποία αναφέρονται στην πόλη των Ιωαννίνων. Τα κριτήρια ανθολόγησης βασίστηκαν σε καθαρά λογοτεχνικούς/κειμενικούς όρους. Δεν αποτέλεσε κριτήριο η καταγωγή ή η βιογραφία των συγγραφέων τους. Ζητούμενο της ανθολογίας ήταν η ανάδειξη της εικόνας των Ιωαννίνων έτσι όπως αυτή διακρίνεται και σχηματοποιείται μέσα από τα λογοτεχνικά έργα, ο καθορισμός των λογοτεχνικών Γιαννίνων, και όχι η συναγωγή πεζογραφημάτων από Γιαννιώτες λογοτέχνες.
Β) «Τα κείμενα»: Στην ανθολόγηση  των λογοτεχνικών καταγραφών που τροφοδοτούν το αενάως διαμορφούμενο και εξελισσόμενο σημαίνον «λογοτεχνικά Γιάννενα» συμπεριλαμβάνονται διηγήματα ή αποσπάσματα μυθιστορημάτων των: Ευάγγελου Αβέρωφ - Τοσίτσα, Βασίλη Αλεξάκη, Ρένου Αποστολίδη, Γιάννη Δάλλα, Βασίλη Ζιώγα, Σωτήρη Ζούμπου, Ναπολέοντα Λαζάνη, Λάμπρου Μάλαμα, Χριστόφορου Μηλιώνη, Ανδρέα Μήτσου, Γιάννη Μπεράτη, Αριστοτέλη Νικολαϊδη, Ιωάννη Ν. Νικολαϊδη, Απόστολου Οικονόμου, Αναστασίου Παπαγγέλη, Ρόδη Ρούφου, Δημητρίου Στ. Σαλαμάγκα, Έρσης Σωτηροπούλου, Πέτρου Τατσόπουλου,  Κίμωνα Τζάλλα, Γεωργίου Χατζή-Πελλερέν, Δημητρίου Χατζή, Νίκου Χουλιαρά, Χρήστου Χρηστοβασίλη, Χρήστου Α. Χωμενίδη.
Τα κείμενα παρουσιάζονται ακολουθώντας τη χρονολογική σειρά εξέλιξης της ιστορίας της αφήγησης (ενδοκειμενική παράμετρος) και όχι το χρόνο συγγραφής ή έκδοσής τους (εξωκειμενικό κριτήριο).
Γ) Βιοεργογραφικά σημειώματα. Σύντομα βιογραφικά και αναλυτικά εργογραφικά στοιχεία καθενός ανθολογούμενου συγγραφέα παρατίθενται στο τέλος του βιβλίου. Έτσι, χωρίς να προκαταλαμβάνεται ο αναγνώστης από οποιαδήποτε εκτός κειμένου πληροφορία έχει τη δυνατότητα να αξιοποιήσει αυτό το υλικό κατά την επιθυμία του.

The Sūktimuktāvalī, an anthology compiled in 1258 CE, is by far the most
important source of testimonia for Bilhaṇa’s biographical mahākāvya, the
Vikramāṅkadevacarita, composed ca. 1085. While the anthology’s value for the primary textual criticism of the kāvya is limited, its value for its interpretation is considerable: Bilhaṇa is the anthology’s most frequently cited poet, and its selection of his verses amounts to a reading of the poem as a whole. The recovery of this interpretation also provides the opportunity to consider the anthology’s complex authorship and to situate it within the late medieval literary cultural history of western India.

To grasp the contemporary is to make a statement about the future. From the New Puritans to the avant-pulp, from psycho-geography to the New Weird, the representation of ‘now’ is a central concern of contemporary fiction. It entails a concern with drawing distinctions, and making arguments for directions into the future.

What makes a fiction about the ‘contemporary’? We can consider texts contemporary in terms of how they break with traditions to represent the present or how they adapt traditions from their historical sources to the demands of the present. The question can be understood in terms of – for instance – grouping writers into modernism, inter-modernism, postmodernism and the contemporary, charting the stylistic and conceptual shifts against other cultural and political trends. Equally, we might study the development of a single writer across a particular period, using their work as a guideline for gaining perspective on shifts in popular cultural tastes. Then again, we might find it much more informative to study the development of a specific fictional mode or genre within a particular period.

This article will explore a range of approaches, from novels to anthologies, and diverse modes and genres, from science fiction and fantasy to postmodernism and psychogeographical fictions to address the question of how we grasp the 'contemporary' in contemporary fiction.

Review of "An Early American Reader," edited by J.A. Leo Lemay (U.S. Information Agency, Division for the Study of the United States, 1988).  Lemay’s reader provides more than 700 pages of early American essays, sermons, captivity narratives, letters, accounts, poems, stories, and travels — from the first English settlements to the beginning of the 19th century -- under six main headings — “The American Dream,” “Religious Traditions,” “The Indians and the Frontier,” “Nature in the New World,” “Slavery and the Black,” and “The American Revolution.”

Tra i tratti principali del modello antologico, ormai considerato alla stregua di un’autonoma forma letteraria, tanto l’intrinseca deco(n)testualizzazione dei singoli frammenti proposti, quanto la morfologia tesa a (ri)definire nuove intertestualità, appaiono caratteristiche fortemente adattabili al medium della rete.
Il contributo mira dunque a esplorare le possibilità offerte dall’immissione del macrotesto antologico nell’ipertestualità della rete, destinando particolare attenzione alle specificità legate ai contenuti dialettali.

Through the examination of Buenos Aires Noir (2017) and Mexico City Noir (2010), released by Akashic Books in its Noir series, this paper analyzes the relations between both volumes and the tradition of "Urban mysteries" literary fiction emerged in the 19th Century, the inherent circulation and validation on the Literary field, and its discursive construction as anthologicalformat books of stories by their owns kind of publisher's initiative, the selection criterion and the writers chosen by editors Ernesto Mallo (Argentina) and Paco Ignacio Taibo II (Mexico).

The tadhkira (biographical anthology) represents one of the most prolific and prevalent categories of texts produced in Islamicate societies, yet few studies have sought to understand the larger processes that governed their production and circulation on a transregional basis. This article examines and maps the production, circulation, and citation networks of tadhkiras of Persian poets in the 18th and 19th centuries. It understands tadhkiras of Persian poets as a transregional library that served as a repository of accessible and circulating texts meant to be incorporated, reworked, and repackaged by a cadre of authors separated by space and time. By relying on a macroanalytical approach, quantifiable data, and digital mapping, this article highlights the overall construction of the transregional library itself, the impact of state disintegration and formation on its constitution, and the different ways authors on opposite ends of the Persianate world came to view this library by the end of the 19th century.

This seminar aims at creating a worldwide, cross-cultural reflection on how anthologies shape language, litrature, culture and beyond.

Using Manuel de Landa's conception of assemblages I analyse the UK underground anthologies Savoy Dreams (1984) and The Starry Wisdom (1994) as assemblage works which deploy their textual surface, subcultural status, and intertextual frames of reference to formulate points of resistance to British cultural politics.
