The mosaic pavements in the House of Leukaktios in Ptolemais (Cyrenaica, Libya), newly discovered - by a Polish team from the University of Warsaw under the direction of T. Mikocki (1954-2007), have shed new light on the decoration of dining rooms in Ptolemais during the Roman period. It seems that in the principal triclinium of this house klinai were arranged in the Greek manner (according to E. Morvillez) and the second room, identified as an andron/triclinium, might have occasionally had klinai placed inside it. The authors propose to compare these
mosaics with pavement mosaics discovered in two others houses in Ptolemais: two in the Palazzo delle Colonne and three in the Roman Villa, both these structures having been excavated and published by Pesce and Kraeling in the 20th century.

D’origine préromaine la cité de Mustis, l’actuel Henchir Mest, a constitué pour
longtemps un carrefour, voire une station par laquelle passaient ou convergeaient de nombreuses voies romaines, dont particulièrement celle de Carthage–Theveste. Se trouvant dans le district administratif dit de Numidie proconsulaire, elle a été occupée dès la fin du IIème siècle av -J.C par les vétérans du général romain Marius. Puis sous l’Empire, la physionomie de la cité, son statut juridique, ses institutions et son territoire ont connu certaines évolutions. Contrairement à d’autres cités toutes proches, elle a gardé tout au long de la période romaine son statut de Municipium Iulium Mustitanum, obtenu dès le règne de Tibère. Puis, dès le début du VIème, faisant partie d’un réseau défensif byzantin, elle a continué de jouer un rôle important dans tout le haut tel septentrional, jusqu’au début du
moyen âge arabo-islamique.

Les fouilles conduites dans la rammadiya de SHM-1 entre 2002 et 2007 ont livré deux sépultures primaires individuelles, ainsi que les restes humains épars d’au moins quatre individus, qui s’ajoutent à la sépulture et aux restes découverts au cours des précédentes recherches (1969-1971).
L’étude des ossements épars, retrouvés dans les différents niveaux d’occupation, a permis d’estimer le Nombre Minimum d’Individus représentés. L’analyse de leur distribution spatiale suggère qu’ils correspondent à des sépultures perturbées au cours de l’utilisation du site.
Les deux sépultures sont présentées selon une perspective archéo-anthropologique, qui comprend l’analyse des squelettes dans leur contexte, et une présentation des caractères biologiques observés (âge, sexe, état sanitaire, métrique…).

Recent discoveries of prehistoric burials in Tunisia have updated the inventory of the sites first reported by Balout in 1954. In comparison to the other North African countries, the anthropological data of the Tunisian context is qualitatively and quantitatively poorer. Nonetheless, the data available allows the detection of similarities, differences, and trends. Furthermore, recent theoretical and methodological improvements are showing the necessity of further review and re-interpretation of the data retrieved in the early twentieth century. The burials discovered at the site SHM-1 near Hergla are particularly important in this perspective. Excaveted between 2002 and 2007 with the application of the most accurate methods of field archaeology, the rammadiya has yield new insights in the burial and taphonomic context, shedding new light on prehistoric funerary practices. The presence of very young individuals, attested by several remains, suggests the existence of long lasting settlements in which activities were not exclusively specialized. The study of these Holocene burials, and the comparison with the data collected in other contemporary North African sites, is extremely important for understanding of both the biology and the funerary practices of these early communities.

Les découvertes récentes de nouvelles sépultures préhistoriques en Tunisie conduisent à réactualiser l’inventaire dressé par L. Balout en 1954. Même si les diverses données
funéraires apparaissent qualitativement et quantitativement pauvres, leur recensement pendant l’Holocène permet d’ébaucher une synthèse. Plusieurs tendances et certaines divergences apparaissent déjà parmi les différents sites connus. Au cours de cette étude, il est apparu indispensable de revoir les données des fouilles anciennes à la lumière des problématiques actuelles. A ce titre, la fouille des sépultures de SHM-1 à Hergla, menée avec les méthodes de « l’anthropologie de terrain » a permis une étude biologique des restes humains en étroite association avec l’observation attentive du contexte funéraire. Nous avons pu mettre en évidence des gestes funéraires, et des tendances dans la gestion de l’espace sépulcral. La présence d’enfants en bas âge sur le site, attestée par plusieurs restes, implique une occupation du site qui ne serait pas uniquement liée à une
activité spécialisée. L’analyse des sépultures holocènes contribue à préciser les connaissances des populations du point de vue biologique, et conduit également à une compréhension des gestes et des pratiques funéraires des communautés. Ces données locales devront être mises en perspective avec celles provenant d’autres sites contemporains d’Afrique du Nord pour trouver tout leur sens.

The early Holocene in North Africa remains a poorly known period, documented unequally by region. Eastern Algeria and Tunisia have the greatest number of deposits, but most were excavated decades ago without the controls and recording required for modern interpretation. The chronological framework is based on radiocarbon (14 C) dates that are also old, for the most part. Recent work on Mesolithic lithic industries of Western Europe has enabled us to revive the hypothesis of the existence of contacts between the northern and southern shores of the western Mediterranean at least by the 6th millennium cal BC. A collective research program was conducted in 2016-2017 to test this hypothesis with a particular focus on documenting the technological traditions in the lithic industry and situating them precisely in time. We have 46 new radiocarbon dates that were recently carried out on previously excavated Algerian sites, some of which contain several levels, allowing the construction of Bayesian models. These new measures reinforce the hypothesis of contacts between Europe and Africa by demonstrating the contemporaneity of similar technological processes. Above all, they make it possible to accurately refine the chronology of the main cultural entities of the Maghreb at the beginning of the Holocene.
