Cet article compare l’état de conservation de quarante mosquées ibadites de l’île de Djerba entre 2002 et 2016. Quatorze mosquées ont été entièrement préservées, cinq ont été modérément endommagées, onze ont été complètement défigurées, notamment par l’ajout d’un haut minaret étranger à l’architecture locale. Dix mosquées ont été victimes de dégradations volontaires, qu’il s’agisse de pillage, de chasse au trésor, de profanation ou de confiscation arbitraire du lieu de culte par des groupes extrémistes.

La formation et la croissance des villes le long de l’Oued Mzab a été et reste un mystère pour des non-initiés.
Comment une population armée seulement de volonté et de courage a-t-elle pu s’installer dans une vallée au sol aussi rocailleux ? Comment les Mozabites ont-ils pu mener à bien un développement aussi harmonieux, rationnel et humain de leur agglomération ?
L’auteur répond ici à ces questions et à bien d’autres.

İbâdiyye mezhebi, Sıffîn Savaşı sonunda savaşan iki ordu arasındaki problemin iki taraftan belirlenen birer kişinin hakemliğinde çözülmesi (tahkim) şeklindeki kararı Kur’ân’a aykırı bularak Hz. Ali’nin ordusunu terkeden ve sonraki kaynaklar tarafından Hâricîler olarak isimlendirilen grubun içerisinden sonraki süreçte çıkmış bir mezheptir. Basra’da teşekkül eden ve mezhebin savunucularından Abdullah b. İbâd’a nispetle İbâdiyye olarak anılan mezhebin müntesipleri mezheplerinin kurucusu olarak tâbiûnun ileri gelenlerinden Câbir b. Zeyd’i kabul eder. Câbir sonrasında mezhebin lideri kabul edilen Ebû Ubeyde döneminde Emevîlerle ilişkilerin bozulması neticesinde Basra’dan göç etmek zorunda kalan mezhep tâbileri ayrıca Ebû Ubeyde tarafından oluşturulan ve hameletü’l-ilim şeklinde adlandırılan davet teşkilatıyla Yemen, Uman ve Kuzey Afrika gibi merkezden uzak bölgelerde yaşama imkânı bulmuştur. Mezhep diğer Hâricî fırkalara nazaran ılımlı görüşler benimsemesi ve dış dünyadan kendisini izole etmesi sebebiyle günümüze değin yaşamayı başarmıştır. Hem itikatta hem de amelde müstakil bir mezhep olan İbâdiyye sonraki dönemlerde Sünnî fıkhına gerek metot gerekse de görüşler bakımından yakınlaşmıştır. Zekât meselesi bunun bir örneğini teşkil etmektedir. Zekâta dair meselelerde Sünnî mezheplerin görüşleriyle benzeşen görüşlere sahip olan İbâdîler yalnızca sığırın nisabı ve zekâtın dağıtımı meselesinde kendilerine özgü bir duruş sergilemişlerdir.
Zekâta dair meselelerin İbâdiyye’deki ele alınışını ele alan bu çalışmada öncelikle çoğu zaman Hâricîler üzerinden oluşturulan menfi algı ve muhaliflerce kaydedilen yanlış bilgiler sebebiyle gerçek kimliğinden farklı bir imaj ile tanınan İbâdiyye’ye dair genel bir çerçeve çizilecek, akabinde İbâdiyye fıkhı temel karakterleri itibariyle ortaya konulacak ve son olarak da zekât konusundaki görüşleri özet bir şekilde verildikten sonra farklılaştıkları iki mesele üzerinde durulacaktır.

Les vestiges archéologiques exceptionnels de Sedrata sont ceux d’une ville médiévale enfouie sous les sables du Sahara algérien, près de Ouargla. Ce carrefour du commerce transsaharien alimentait la Méditerranée en or et en esclaves. Ce fut aussi un centre pour les ibadites, une minorité musulmane dont les héritiers visitent tous les ans les ruines de leur passé. Son destin fut lié à cette communauté, mais aussi à l’épuisement des ressources hydriques. L’enquête entrelace les disciplines et les temporalités pour offrir au lecteur la première image complète de cette cité, au cœur de l’histoire africaine. Cette redécouverte s’appuie sur les sources ibadites et sur les archives de fouilles inédites de Marguerite van Berchem (1950-1955). Le manuscrit inachevé, la riche collection de photographies, de dessins et de plans légués par son projet novateur nourrissent une étude historique et archéologique de l’établissement, dont les célèbres programmes décoratifs sont de nouveau interprétés et datés.

This volume presents the proceedings of the first international conference dedicated to Ibadism and the Sultanate of Oman, which was held at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in November 2009. The goal of the conference was to introduce Ibadism and Ibadi Studies to the worldwide research community and, indeed, it has served as the springboard for other conferences and the founding of academic groups dedicated to Ibadism and the Sultanate of Oman. In the first part of this volume, we are guided through Ibadi history, theology, and jurisprudence while the second part opens up a broad vista on the dialectics between religion, society, and politics within contemporary Ibadi communities and especially that of Oman. By introducing Ibadism to the broader academic community, we hope to contribute to the mutual understanding and rapprochement of peoples, cultures, and religions. In this regard, each paper in the present volume has lasting value.

This dissertation analyzes the ongoing attempts of Omani Ibadis to re-envision Islamic identity in the modern era. Arguably Islam’s oldest distinct sect, Ibadism has offered alternative formulations of Islamic belief and jurisprudence that never claimed the adherence of a majority of Muslims, but thrived in enclaves in Arabia and North and East Africa. Omani Ibadis’ encounter with modernity began around the turn of the 19th century and accelerated after 1970 under Sultan Qaboos. Like Muslims across the globe, the Ibadis of Oman have navigated the transformations of modernity, striving for coherence between their sectarian identity and the evolving world around them.

A mixed methodological approach combines textual analysis and fieldwork to examine the modern religious discourse of Ibadi ʿulamāʾ primarily, and of lay Ibadis secondarily. Interviews with 58 diverse individuals offer a window into the reality of public religious life in Oman. The survey of the works of contemporary ʿulamāʾ encompasses books, articles, pamphlets, video lectures, and social media postings.

The study of these resources enables a set of observations about the engagements of modern Ibadis with their textual tradition. The modern state’s control over public religious life, the centrality of fear as a recognized and valued tool for inspiring positive behavior, and the concern with presenting Ibadi identity in a way that appeals to a broad Sunni audience are important themes that recur throughout the chapters. Additionally, the language of tolerance emerges as a ubiquitous idiom in contemporary Omani Ibadi discourse, and scholars and lay believers alike express their sect’s distinctiveness in terms of positive relations with religious others.

I argue that the spread of Saudi Salafism presents an enduring challenge to Ibadism’s place within the international umma. Here, a study of Salafi scholars’ opinions on Ibadism informs a subsequent exploration of contemporary Ibadis’ responses to those opinions as well as their own discourse on Salafism.

Finally, this dissertation documents the recent emergence of the tayyār ʿaqlānī (rationalist stream) of Ibadism, a movement that challenges the state-affiliated Ibadi mainstream and advocates for internal criticism in order to better integrate Ibadism into modernity.

A preliminary catalog of Ibadi and other Arabic Manuscripts at the Association pour la Sauvegarde de l'Île de Djerba (Houmet Souk, Tunisia). The catalog includes codicological descriptions of each manuscript, a list of watermarks with images, and appendices with former owners and copyists.

L’architecture religieuse des Ibadites fait partie du large éventail du patrimoine bâti des peuples musulmans, dont on ignore encore une grande partie. En première analyse, notre étude a révélé une certaine diversité qui se fait observer autant dans les plans et les volumes, que dans les matériaux et les détails de construction des mosquées Ibadites traitées dans les différentes régions considérées. Pourtant, il existe bien une homogénéité entre tous ces sanctuaires. Ils portent tous une sorte « d’air de famille » qui semble les unir. Comme ils se démarquent du style dit "classique" par un certain nombre de particularités que nous avons tenté d’établir et que nous présenterons dans ce qui va suivre. Nous avons essayé également d’explorer les parallèles pouvant exister entre les spécificités qui caractérisent les architectures de ces mosquées, et les règlements fixés par les juristes Ibadites dans ce domaine. Des spécificités que nous avons essayé de vérifier, de temps à autre, dans d’autres régions connues pour avoir appartenu, à un moment de leur histoire, à l’aire d’influence Ibadite, telles que le Djebel Nafoussa (Libye), Zanzibar (Côte Est de l’Afrique), Tahart ou Sedrata (Algérie).

Durant l’époque médiévale, de nombreux Berbères du Sud tunisien embrassèrent l’ibadisme. Cette particularité religieuse conduisit les historiens arabes à les considérer comme des rebelles et les géographes à railler leurs coutumes. Cette étude confronte la vision sunnite, pleine d’a priori, à celle des sources ibadites et plus particulièrement au témoignage de l’historien Chammâkhî.
La première partie est consacrée à l’histoire de la région depuis la conquête arabe du VIIe siècle jusqu’au XIIIe siècle : plusieurs faits historiques importants, tels que la révolte d’Abû Yazîd ou l’arrivée des nomades Banû Hilâl, y sont envisagés sous un angle neuf. On y voit le rôle primordial que joua le Sud tunisien dans l’histoire de l’ibadisme maghrébin dès la fondation de l’imâmat de Tâhert. Au IXe siècle, la région dépendit à la fois des imams rustumides et des émirs aghlabides, une situation paradoxale que de nombreux historiens ont refusé d’admettre. La ville de Qantrâra, ignorée des sources sunnites, acquit alors une grande importance dans le Djérid. À la fin de ce siècle, la cruelle défaite des ibadites face aux Aghlabides permit à Djerba et au Djérid de devenir deux centres culturels majeurs pour les vaincus. C’est au Djérid que s’organisa en 968 l’ultime révolte des ibadites, qui visait à créer un nouvel imamat regroupant toutes les communautés nord-africaines. Après la déroute, leur clandestinité forcée les poussa à imaginer l’institution de la halqa qui leur permit de fonder une sorte d’État secret très uni, sans capitale ni imam. La première partie étudie également les autres groupes kharidjites du Sud tunisien, les juifs et les chrétiens, les sunnites et les chiites, et aborde de nombreux aspects culturels comme les styles architecturaux uniques de Tozeur et de Djerba.
La seconde partie s’attache au commerce des oasis et fait l’inventaire des nombreuses productions citées par les géographes arabes. Elle étudie le réseau routier qui reliait le Sud tunisien aux autres régions du Maghreb et établit le rôle primordial qu’il a joué dans la création d’un commerce régulier à travers le Sahara. Dès le début de l’époque rustumide, de nombreux commerçants originaires du Djérid partirent s’installer dans les villes situées sur la voie conduisant à Gao par Ouargla et Tâdimakka et s’y enrichirent considérablement grâce au commerce de l’or. Ces ibadites exercèrent un véritable monopole sur la voie transsaharienne centrale tout en étant très présents sur la voie transsaharienne occidentale qui menait à Ghâna, par Sijilmâsa et Awdaghost. Dans le même temps, le Djérid demeura le débouché des marchandises et des esclaves venus du Kawâr et du Kânim par Zawîla. Grâce à leur solidarité et à leur dispersion dans le Sahara, les ibadites réalisèrent une fulgurante réussite commerciale dans le Sûdân en y contrôlant à tout moment les fluctuations de l’offre et de la demande. Ils y fondèrent de nombreuses mosquées et y introduisirent des éléments architecturaux qui se sont maintenus jusqu’à nos jours.

One would assume that two and a half centuries of interaction between Oman and Portugal would have been fruitful regarding the knowledge of the other, but that was not the case. The reasons behind this lack of information are varied, and stem mainly from the way that relation was realised since 1507 and of the guiding political nexus present since its inception, particularly given the religious context and the political geography of the region where the encounter took place. What I seek to show here are the guidelines of a process and not the fastidious enumeration of dates, battles, and names, though some need to be mentioned in order to explain why the evolution followed a given path.

L'ibadisme maghrébin en contexte fatimide (début x e-milieu xi e siècle) Résumé : L'avènement des Fatimides nourrit tout d'abord dans les sources ibadites une mémoire de la chute, dont nous examinons les différentes déclinaisons. Cette vision est complétée par le thème apologétique de la résistance face aux « tyrans ». Mais comment égaler la geste héroïque incarnée par le leader schismatique Abū Yazīd, figure de proue de la rébellion ? L'orthodoxie ibadite prit soin de le présenter comme un « kharijite », dont l'action avait répandu la « fitna » sur le Maghreb. Elle mit en avant une autre révolte, juste, légitime et pieuse, car née du consensus de la communauté et dirigée par ses oulémas, celle de Bāghāya en 969. Abstract : North African Ibadism in Fatimid context (909-1048). In Ibadi sources, the advent of the Fatimids has fuelled a memory of the Fall, the aspects of which we will examine. This vision is completed by the apologetical narrative of resistance against the " tyrants ". But how could the Ibadi orthodoxy compete with the heroic saga of Abū Yazīd, the schismatic figurehead of rebellion? First, by presenting him as a " Kharijite " leader who had spread the " fitna " over the whole country, and secondly by putting forward another revolt. The work that Auguste Bossoutrot published in 1900 under the title "Vocabulaire berbère ancien (Dialecte du djebel Nefoussa)" contains a collection of glosses, that is to say of Arabic words corresponding to Berber words from within an Ibadite treaty in Berber language (the "Kitab al-Barbariyya").
After the discovery of a manuscript of "Kitab al-Babrariyya", it is now possible to check the words to which the glosses refer and correct some mistakes concerning about fifteen words.

The historical development of an Ibāḍī textual tradition in the Arabian peninsula was not straightforward.  Early Ibāḍīs adopted divergent approaches to the relationship of reason to questions of faith, the requirement of dissociation from grave sinners and from people of the qibla with divergent views, and the question of whether or not the Qur’ān is created.  Theological divisions among Ibāḍīs sometimes had geographical echoes: between Baṣra and Kūfa in Iraq, between North Africa and the Arabian peninsula, and within the Arabian peninsula between Oman and the Ḥaḍramawt, on the one hand, and Yemen on the other. For centuries Ibāḍīs identified sunna with the practice of the forebears of their school; its redefinition as the practice of the Prophet was part of Ibāḍism’s re-imagining as a school (madhhab) along Sunni lines in the 4th/10th–5th/11th centuries. This article traces the historical development of the textual tradition, from early epistles (siyar) and reports (āthār) to collections (jawāmi‘) of scholars’ responsa, and, finally, the composition of enormous encyclopaedic works embodying scholarly consensus on all matters of faith and practice. The consolidation of Ibāḍī doctrine as currently standardized includes the fairly recent acceptance of the doctrine of the creation of the Qur’ān as part of a wholesale incorporation of North African Ibāḍī scholarship in Oman, as exchanges between the two main branches of Ibāḍism intensified in the 13th/19th century. Finally, the article finds that public policy in Oman continues to impact the way that Ibāḍism is interpreted and understood.

Les idées khârijites rencontrent un grand succès au Maghreb où les Berbères adhèrent rapidement, selon les régions, au ṣufrisme ou à l’ibadisme. Pendant les premières décennies, cependant, il apparaît que c’est principalement le message révolutionnaire du khârijisme qui est retenu, les rigoureuses prescriptions relatives à l’organisation de l’imamat et à la morale étant négligées. C’est manifestement après la fondation de l’imamat rustumide de Tahert, qui apporte une certaine stabilité, que les Berbères adoptent pleinement la foi ibadite. Ils intègrent à cette doctrine extrêmement exigeante de nombreux aspects de l’ancienne culture berbère païenne ; ainsi, ils maintiennent le culte des grottes et l’usage des motifs prophylactiques ancestraux, qui sont désormais associés à la mosquée. L’obligation ibadite d’instruire leurs coreligionnaires les pousse à développer une littérature religieuse dans une langue berbère écrite en caractères arabes. Ce lien très étroit entre de nombreux aspects de la culture berbère traditionnelle et la foi ibadite est sans doute un des facteurs qui a maintenu l’ibadisme maghrébin vivant jusqu’à nos jours.

The qṣar can be defined in the Sahara as a type of fortified human settlement built in height on a rocky promontory (gāra) and near a wādī. The morphology of the land and its immediate environment (palm grove, erg, depression or rocky plateau) determines the building materials used in the construction, as well as its general shape and the internal distribution of spaces. Some qṣūr in southeastern Algeria, which foundation is attributed in historical sources and local legends to Ibāḍi Berbers, present architectural features and an urban organisation that can be associated with these communities in particular, despite a discontinuity within the historical narrative. Through a few examples of the qṣūr neighbouring the wādī Rīgh, those of the Miya and the Mzāb and the city of al-Manīʻa, this paper will provide a comparative analysis that will help understanding the urban development of this part of the Sahara, and to determine in what extent Ibāḍism has been able to influence the architecture of these human settlements.

İslam tarihinin oldukça erken bir döneminde ortaya çıkmış, belli bir dönem varlığını ve etkinliğini sürdürmüş, ancak daha sonra kâhir ekseriyetiyle mevcudiyetini kaybetmiş Hâricîler, gerek akademik gerekse de popüler yazında günümüzde yaşayan ancak birbirinden kalın çizgilerle ayrılan iki mezhebî grup (İbâdîler ve Selefîler) ile çeşitli bağlamlarda irtibatlandırılmaktadır. İbâdîlerin köken itibariyle Hâricîlerin ‘günümüze kadar ulaşan tek kolu’ ve ‘organik devamı’ olarak görülmesinde haklılık payı bulunmakla birlikte özellikle Ezârika üzerinden oluşturulan Hâricîlik resmi üzerine İbâdîliğin iliştirilmesi birtakım problemli neticeleri husûle getirmektedir. Aralarında herhangi bir organik bağ bulunmamasına rağmen Selefîlerin tümünün veya belli bazı alt gruplarının Hâricîlerin ‘günümüzdeki görünümleri’ veya ‘neo-Hâricîler’ şeklinde tanımlanması ise bir zihniyet veya pratik benzerliği temelinde yükselmektedir. Ancak bu durum da bazı netameli durumları gündeme taşımaktadır. İşte bu çalışma özelde İbâdîlerin ve Selefîlerin Hâricîlerin günümüzdeki devamı olarak nitelenmesinin doğurduğu metodik problemler genelde de bu örneklem üzerinden mezhep araştırmalarının mahiyet ve metodolojisi üzerine odaklanmaktadır. Bunu yaparken birtakım yargılara varma değil, metodik problemleri gündeme taşıma ve bunların halline dair tartışma ve önerileri provoke etme amacını gözetmektedir.

Abstract
Is Modern Khārijīs Ibāḍīs or Salafīs 
-A Discussion on Methodology-
Khārijīs, who appeared in the relatively early period of Islamic History, maintained its existence and efficiency for a certain time and later went out of the existence of its majority, has been sometimes correlated, in both some scholarly and popular publications, with Ibāḍīs or Salafīs, who are living Islamic groups today, however both disassociate each other. A convinction that Ibādīs, as its origin, are ‘the only surviving sub-sect of Khārijīs’ or ‘Khārijīs’s organic continuation” has a point. However, attaching Ibāḍīs to Khārijīs on a picture of Khārijism drawn on the basis of ideas and practices of Azāriqa, the most radical sub-sect of Khārijism, brings about some methodic problems. On the other, a definition that Salafism as a whole or its some certain sub-groups are ‘modern appearances of Khārijism’ or ‘Neo-Khārijīs’ although there is no organic connection to Khārijism, is based on a similarity of mentality or practices. This raises some problematic issues, too. This study focuses on methodic problems resulted by the description of both Ibāḍīs and Salafīs as the continuation of Khārijīs and aims, with special reference to this case, to provoke discussions on the nature and methodology of a research of Islamic sects.
