Male Domestic Violence Victims

It was hypothesized that base rate differences in the number of complaints made during daylight and nighttime hours were responsible for a previously reported, nonlinear relationship between temperature and domestic violence. This hypothesis was tested by subjecting calls for service in 1987 and 1988 in Minneapolis, to moderator-variable regression analyses with controls for time of day, day of the week, season, and their interactions as well as linear trend, major holidays, public school closings, the first day of the month, and other weather variables. Temporal variables explained 75% of the variance in calls for service. As hypothesized, the base rate artifact was responsible for an apparent downturn in violence at high temperatures: Fewer complaints were received during afternoon hours, because they happen to be the warmest time of the day. The results were interpreted in terms of routine activity theory.

The present meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of bystander education programs for preventing sexual assault in college communities. Undergraduates trained in bystander education for sexual assault were expected to report more favorable attitudes, behavioral proclivities, and actual behaviors relative to untrained controls. Data from 12 studies of college students (N = 2,926) were used to calculate 32 effect sizes. Results suggested moderate effects of bystander education on both bystander efficacy and intentions to help others at risk. Smaller but significant effects were observed regarding self-reported bystander helping behaviors, (lower) rape-supportive attitudes, and (lower) rape proclivity, but not perpetration. These results provide initial support for the effectiveness of in-person bystander education training. Nonetheless, future longitudinal research evaluating behavioral outcomes and sexual assault incidence is needed.

Male victims of IPV hold an ambiguous position in feminist research and in theorisations of IPV, including in critical studies of men and masculinities. This is due to the ways in which male victims of violence are framed in intertwined academic and political struggles over gendered patterns of victimisation. Recently, there has been a rise of antifeminist mobilisation spanning from organisations and lobby groups, to looser groupings on social media. This is an important context which further complicates the contemporary politicisation of male victims of IPV. This chapter sheds light on the interface between masculinist policies and men’s personal stories of victimisation by analysing how the narrative framing and affective space offered by a masculinist/antifeminist Men’s Rights Organisation (MRO) works for individual male victims of IPV. Through highlighting the ambiguities between the MRO’s mobilisation of collective emotions bolstering an antifeminist narrative of men as a discriminated group, and individual male victim’s personal stories and feelings, the chapter illucidates the complex relations between the personal and the political in contemporary masculinist policies.

Research suggests that transgender people are at an increased risk of domestic abuse: 50% or more of transgender people experience domestic abuse at some point in their life in the UK. Nevertheless, the majority of domestic violence refuges are designed for ‘women only’ without consideration of ways to make these safe havens accessible and relevant to transgender domestic violence victims/survivors. Improved access to domestic violence refuges is a paramount issue for the safety of transgender victims/survivors of domestic abuse and for the equality of all transgender people. The goal of this workshop is to increase awareness of the needs of transgender domestic violence victims/survivors. Research will be presented from a transfeminist approach, challenging gender oppression by promoting transgender inclusive services. The workshop will interweave information, discussion and skill sharing.

College students are at particular risk for sexual assault victimization, yet research tends to focus on women as victims and men as perpetrators. The purpose of this study was to investigate gender differences in the prevalence, context, and predictors of sexual assault victimization among college students. Results showed that women were significantly more likely to have been sexually assaulted in a 2-month time period, but the context of victimization varied little by gender. Victimization was predicted by sexual orientation, time spent socializing and partying, and severe dating violence victimization for men and by year in school, time spent on the Internet, drinking and using drugs, and being a stalking and dating violence victim for women. Results are discussed in the context of routine activities theory and implications for prevention and future research.

Intimate partner violence is often thought of as a feminized issue that only affects women, though there are also male victims. Unfortunately, a significantly large majority of nonprofit organizations do not acknowledge male victims and they do not provide services for them. The perpetrator-victim dyad used by the nonprofit anti-domestic violence sector is influenced by gendered perceptions of victimhood which influences how masculinity is constructed in society. Victimhood is feminized while violent perpetration is masculinized, when in reality the nuanced and shifting power and control dynamics in a relationship can easily change someone’s role. Male victims have a challenging time breaking norms of masculinity and femininity. Males are known to initiate violence to control and manipulate their partners; thus, they are often (always) viewed to be the perpetrator in cases of intimate partner violence, though some of them may actually be victims. Male victims of intimate partner violence are an underserved and ignored population in the nonprofit anti-domestic violence sector.

This paper explored factors that prevent heterosexual male victims of intimate partner violence from reporting their cases. Data was gathered through interviews with nonprofit professionals and scholarly articles found in academic research databases. The findings reveal that stigmatizing social conditions based on perceived gender roles and the language used in nonprofit informational material prevent heterosexual male victims from reporting their cases and seeking help, which results in heterosexual male victims not receiving assistance from the nonprofit
system. Heterosexual male victims need to have services that acknowledges their needs and allows them to develop and promote healthy models of masculinity.

An empirical test of traumatic bonding theory, the notion that strong emotional attachments are formed by intermittent abuse, is reported. In-depth assessments (interviews plus questionnaires) were conducted on 75 women who had recently left abusive relationships (50 where physical violence had occurred). The study found support for the effect of relationship dynamic factors such as extremity of intermittent maltreatment and power differentials on long-term felt attachment for a former partner, experienced trauma symptoms, and self-esteem, immediately after separation from an abusive partner and again after a six month interim. All three of these measures were significantly intercorrelated within each time period. Each measure at Time 1 correlated significantly with each corresponding measure at Time 2. We report the results of a pilot trial of an evidence-based treatment—Parent–Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT; Eyberg et al. Psychopharmacology Bulletin, 31(1), 83–91, 1995) for boys aged 5–12 with high functioning autism spectrum disorders and clinically significant behavioral problems. The study also included an investigation of the role of shared positive affect during the course of therapy on child and parent outcomes. The intervention group showed reductions in parent perceptions of child problem behaviors and child atypicality, as well as an increase in child adaptability. Shared positive affect in parent child dyads and parent positive affect increased between the initial and final phases of the therapy. Parent positive affect after the first phase was related to perceptions of improvement in problem behaviors and adaptive functioning.

Little is known about the role social support may play in reducing the risk of adolescent dating violence perpetration and victimization. This study is a longitudinal analysis of the independent impact of social support from friends and parents on the risk of emotional and physical dating violence perpetration and victimization among a large sample of female youth (n = 346). Findings indicate that 22% of the sample indicated perpetrating physical dating violence against a partner, whereas almost 16% revealed being the victim of physical dating violence; 34% of the sample indicated perpetrating emotional dating violence against a partner, whereas almost 39% revealed being the victim of emotional dating violence. Negative binomial regression models indicated that increased levels of support from friends at Time 1 was associated with significantly less physical and emotional dating violence perpetration and emotional (but not physical) dating violence victimization at Time 2. The area of domestic abuse has been widely acknowledged, but it seems that the experience of men as victims of domestic abuse has been rarely explored, especially in our country. This dissertation will try to shed light on the experience of domestically abused men by their female partners. The dissertation will describe the experience of abused men and compare it with that of abused females. It also considers the perception of Maltese society in regards to victims of different sexes. These will be explored through in-depth interviews with both male and female victims together with a questionnaire with the general public. Twelve interviews were conducted with male victims while six were conducted with female victims. The questionnaire involved five hundred and fifty one participants coming from different social sectors. This dissertation also reviews literature available on the experience of domestically violated men and also gives a look at the situation in Malta in regards to the family structure and domestic violence.
At present, no services seem to specifically target abused men, especially when it comes to shelters. This study points out the need for the creation of a new service but especially for the need that society becomes aware of such dynamic since otherwise better support for male victims would not be possible. It seems that currently the focus is solely on female victims, placing male victims at the margin, leading to further victimisation. The reasons suggest lack of awareness on the area with paternalism playing a strong contribution. Findings further suggest that changes are required for society to shift their attitude in regards to domestic abuse especially in becoming aware that though females do not abuse as an extension of paternalism, there are other reasons of abuse which can be as harmful. A major contribution could be made through the media and awareness campaigns which could help society become more aware of the reality of domestic abuse on males. The implications would be providing more assistance and adopting an attitude of zero tolerance towards abuse independent of who is the perpetrator and form of abuse experienced.

Concepts of intimate partner abuse and violence are shifting, complex, situational and multifaceted. Whilst women's narratives of abuse have provided much needed insights into the subjective experience of intimate partner abuse, men's accounts of female perpetrated abuse have been slower to emerge, generating much controversy and hostility. This paper seeks to add to a small, but developing qualitative literature on male victims' accounts of intimate abuse and violence. Drawing on case study data, the article charts some of the salient themes emerging from a series of in-depth interviews and the personal diary of an abused heterosexual male victim. It explores the congruence with elements of other accounts of intimate abuse and violence. The paper concludes with a discussion of the ways in which male victims of intimate abuse might be understood within contemporary frameworks of masculinity.

The present study is an extension of research that examined the relationship between borderline personality organization (BPO), anger (assessed with the Multidimensional Anger Inventory [MAI]), and wife abuse in 120 men who had committed wife assault. Seventy-five female partners reported on physical and psychological abuse by the men, using the Conflict Tactics Scale and the Psychological Maltreatment of Women Inventory. The men's BPO self-report scores correlated significantly with their partners' reports of their abusiveness as assessed by these scales. Three self-report subscale scores on the MAI and one on the BPO scale accounted for 50% of the variance in their partners' reports of domination and isolation, and for 35% of the women's reports of emotional abuse.

Findings of the article in this two-volume series on stalking are reviewed. Building on the findings of the National Violence Against Women Survey (Tjaden & Thoennes, 1998), this series of studies adds to the literature in defining and measuring stalking behaviors. Repeated stalking victimization is reported by up to 62% of young adults, although frequencies depend on the sample and the precise definition used. Self-definitions of stalking victimization may be quite different from legal definitions. Although the majority of legally defined stalkers (where victim fear is a key component) are men stalking women, studies utilizing other definitions find many more women as stalkers, with no significant gender differences in many studies. In many cases, it does appear that stalking is one part of a larger pattern of relationship physical and psychological abuse. Domestic Violence against women is increasing at a higher rate, it is a serious threat for many women. domestic violence or intimate partner violence occurs between people in an intimate relationship. Domestic violence can take many forms, including emotional, sexual, and physical abuse and threats of abuse. Domestic violence can happen in heterosexual or same-sex relationships.

The complexities of intimate partner abuse and violence have been studied from a range of theoretical, conceptual, and methodological perspectives. It is argued here that symbolic interactionist analyses offer specific and powerful insights into this particular interactional domain. This article is based on data generated by a topical life-history case study of a well-educated, middle-class, middle-aged man, whose
wife subjected him to sustained unilateral violence and abuse, resulting in deleterious consequences for his health and well-being. Data were gathered via a series of in-depth interviews and a personal diary. The analysis draws on Goffman’s conceptualization of “possessional territory” as one of the “territories of the self,” in order to examine the role of
possessions in the interactional routines of intimate partner abuse.

A common perception is that police officers hold very negative attitudes about rape victims. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to establish whether police officers do accept stereotypical rape myths at a higher level compared to members of other populations. There were 3 comparison samples, composed of police officers, law students, and psychology students, that completed the Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance scale. Male and female police officers accepted "she lied" myths at a higher level than the student samples. Student samples were found to accept 2 types of rape myths ("she asked for it" and "he didn't meant to") at a higher level compared to police officers. No significant differences were found in the other 4 subfactors. Therefore, the pattern of results suggests that police officers do not adhere to stereotypical myths about rape victims more than do other populations.

Shame-proneness has been found to be related to anger arousal and a tendency to externalize attributions for one's own behavior, both common features of men who assault their wives. The present study examined a potential origin of a shame-prone style by analysing reports of shaming experiences by ones' parents as reported by a population of assaultive males. Significant relationships were found for recollections of shaming actions by parents on adult anger, abusiveness (as reported by the men's wives), and a constellation of personality variables related to abusiveness in prior research. These associations maintained even after corrections were made for response sets such as social desirability. These shaming actions were largely comprised of recollections of parental punishment that were public, random, or global. The role of shame experiences in disturbances of self-identity and rage is discussed.
