Methods of identification of perpetrators differ greatly for IPV, child maltreatment, and elder abuse. In some cases of extreme violence or neglect, sexual abuse, or homicide, the offender is sent to jail if found by the courts to have committed the crime. For IPV, the offender is identified when the abused partner calls for police assistance. Arrests can involve both partners if there is mutual fighting. Offenders are expected to participate in a batterer intervention program (BIP). These may not be effective at stopping partner violence. General education programs to help people understand that IPV should not be tolerated may be more effective.

Romantic relationships have long been a focus of attention by novelists, poets, and other observers of human nature. On a more practical level, finding a spouse is one of the major concerns of young adults in our society. The success of such relationships is of interest, not only to the individuals themselves and to their families and friends, but also to society at large, because of the importance of the family as a primary institution for stabilizing adult personalities and socializing children.

A brief history of empirical research on violence in close relationships is presented. Assumptions of and conclusions made by feminist researchers about the problems of battered wives are reviewed. It is argued that their focus on marital violence as a form of aggression against women by men and their concern for severely beaten wives may have caused them to ignore high levels of female violence in marriage and dating. J. Archer's (2000) meta-analysis of studies of marital and dating violence showed that both sexes display violence in these relationships, although women are more likely to be injured. An expansion of Archer's definition of heterosexual violence (or violence in close relationships) to include sexual aggression and stalking is suggested. Reasons for relatively high levels of female violence in close relationships relative to violence toward strangers are briefly discussed. It is argued that more attention needs to be given to male victims of violence from their partners.

A model based on McClelland's theory of human motivation was proposed in which motive incentives mediated the relationship between motive level (n Power, n Affiliation and n Achievement) and product involvement. This hypothesis was tested with 142 college students. Results indicate that power motive incentives successfully mediated the relationship between power motive level and product involvement for the expensive car

A two dimensional analysis of Heider’s fourfold taxonomy was then made by Weiner and his colleagues. Weiner et al. (1971) proposed that the dimension of stability of the cause mediates future expectations while the dimension of the internal-external source of the intentionality into the Weiner scheme as a third dimension and provided evidence that the

This study examines intentions to take protective action against peer sexual harassment and abuse (PSHA). The theory of planned behavior (TPB) proposes that attitudes about protective action, perceptions of what others would think about doing this (subjective norms), and behavioral control would be important predictors. A total of 1,531 Chinese secondary school students (769 boys and 762 girls) from Hong Kong were surveyed to test this model. Results showed that the TPB model was predictive for girls, but only subjective norms and behavioral control significantly predicted boys’ intentions to protect themselves. Results supported the influence of subjective norms and perceived behavioral control on youths’ intentions to reject PSHA. These factors may be useful in guiding the development of an educational program for prevention of PSHA.

Aggression and violence are complex behaviors with many possible contributing factors. Learning contributes to making people either more or less violent or aggressive in many ways. Reinforcement and modeling of others’ behaviors are major forms of learning. Society differentially rewards aggressive behavior in girls and boys, with boys generally being more encouraged to act in aggressive ways. Attitudes about aggression are learned from the media. Frustration and other conditions in the environment can also lead to increased aggressive behavior. Genetic factors contribute to levels of aggressiveness, often in complex ways. Some individuals appear to have more aggressive personalities that may be related to underlying genetics. This genetic effect appears to be relatively weak, though. Other biological variables such as the hormone testosterone as well as other hormones such as cortisol and oxytocin are important in understanding aggressive behavior. Alcohol levels contribute to aggression through reducing our ability to perceive what is happening in the environment, as well as increasing testosterone levels.

Book Summary: In this exciting new book John Hamel, author of the ground-breaking Gender-Inclusive Treatment of Intimate Partner Abuse, and Tonia Nicholls go beyond the traditional intervention theories of domestic violence practiced today. Offering alternative, unbiased and sometimes controversial views, theories, and current research, they, along with renowned contributors in the field, provide new treatment options that encompass a wide range of gender dynamics. Here are just some of the key principles covered: Interventions Should Be Based on a Thorough Unbiased Assessment Victim/Perpetrator Distinctions are Overstated, and Much Partner Abuse is Mutual Regardless of Perpetrator Gender, Child Witnesses to Partner Abuse are Adversely Affected, and are at Risk for Perpetrating Partner Abuse as Adults This new gender-inclusive approach to assessment and intervention provides a significant departure from traditional paradigms of domestic violence, and offers a much-needed awareness to effectively prevent violence in our communities today and for future generations
