Se presenta la relación de la ciencia arqueológica con las políticas sociales de aquel Gobierno Revolucionario de Lázaro Cárdenas, período histórico que entreverá el impulso a la educación socialista, al reparto agrario, soberanía nacional e integración de la población indígena. Se aproxima a los motivos científicos y políticos que contribuyeron en la institucionalización de la antropología mexicana y que podremos ver a través de un análisis valorativo y metodológico en el trance de la relación ciencia y política que ha signado a dicha tradición científica. En ese momento de Revolución Social se podrán encontrar las causas y objetivos profundamente humanistas que permearon una praxis antropológica que apuntalaba la justicia social.

In 'Time and the Ancestors: Aztec and Mixtec Ritual Art', Maarten Jansen and Aurora Pérez present new interpretations of enigmatic masterpieces from ancient Mexico. Combining iconographical analysis with the study of archaeological contexts, historical sources and living cultural traditions, they shed light on central symbols and values of the religious heritage of indigenous peoples, paying special attention to precolonial perceptions of time and the importance of ancestor worship. They decipher the meaning of the treasure deposited in Tomb 7 at Monte Albán (Oaxaca) and of artworks such as the Roll of the New Fire (Selden Roll), the Aztec religious sculptures and, last but not least, the mysterious chapter of temple scenes from the Book of Night and Wind (Codex Borgia).

This study of the hieroglyphic writing system of Preclassic and Classic Monte Alban in the Mexican state of Oaxaca discusses the origins of writing in the Zapotec area and highlights the various academic perspectives (above all, those of Alfonso Caso, Gordon Whittaker, Joyce Marcus) with regard to aspects of this system.  In so doing, it provides a much-needed corrective to the work of Marcus, which unfortunately fails to give credit to such scholars as Robert Barlow and Whittaker, while frequently, but silently, incorporating their ideas.

The recent excellent work of Javier Urcid on the iconography of Zapotec Monte Alban deals tangentially with some aspects of hieroglyphic writing, primarily the calendrical system, as well, but is most concerned with Classic-period monuments. His work postdates this article.

Commentary on the precolonial Mixtec historical codex Zouche-Nuttall, which contains several important ancient genealogies and also a crucial part of the dramatic biography of the Mixtec ruler Lord 8 Deer 'Jaguar Claw'. The commentary discusses the Map of Teozacualco (with geographical identifications) and offers examples of readings of passages in the Mixtec language.

En este artículo se describen dos urnas o vasijas efigie de cerámica de la época Monte Albán IIIB-IV Temprano (periodo Clásico Tardío), halladas en el complejo funerario del Edificio 6, anexo a la Casa de los Altares en el Conjunto Monumental de Atzompa, sector norte de Monte Albán, Oaxaca.  Estas urnas representan a dos personajes, uno masculino y otro femenino: el Señor Ocho Temblor y la Señora Agua. Se presenta una interpretación iconográfica y los procesos técnicos realizados para su adecuada conservación.

Diálogos. Pueblos Originarios de Oaxaca es una colección editorial iniciada en 2006 cuya encomienda es publicar textos que den cuenta de las fecundas y distintas expresiones del arte y la cultura, principalmente las que provienen de personas y comunidades nativas del estado de Oaxaca. En dicha propuesta editorial el investigador Rodrigo de la Torre Yarza (ciesas-Pacífico sur) ha publicado Nahuitji Copijcha: una meridiana en Monte Albán, un estudio sobre la estela 18 de ese centro arqueológico y de su relevancia en el sistema de medida del tiempo-espacio entre las comunidades prehispánicas de esa zona. The walls of Structure J at the Zapotec centre of Monte Albán incorporate monuments, probably carved during the Pe ceramic phase (300–100 bc), bearing distinctively formatted hieroglyphic inscriptions. Alfonso Caso suggested that hieroglyphic compounds on those monuments name regions conquered by Monte Albán. Many scholars accept an elaboration by Joyce Marcus on this proposal—that some of those compounds denote identifiable places outside the Valley of Oaxaca—and see the inscriptions as evidence for the territorial extent of an expansionist, Monte Albán-centred empire in the Late to Terminal Formative periods (300 bc–ad 200). This paper argues that Marcus’ proposed decipherments are implausible because they are structurally inconsistent with one another and with Zapotec scribal conventions for recording toponyms in other inscriptions. The Structure J texts remain undeciphered. Therefore they cannot now serve as evidence for the nature and reach of the Monte Albán polity, and generalizations about state formation that relied on Marcus’ readings need to be reconsidered.

El presente proyecto de investigación tiene como objetivo principal el determinar si la presencia de exostosis auditiva externa (EAE) en la población de Monte Albán, está relacionada con actividades ocupacionales en cuerpos de agua cercanos a la ciudad. No obstante, esta característica puede estar presente en Monte Albán a consecuencia de procesos migratorios de poblaciones provenientes de la costa, por  lo cual resulta de interés describir y analizar los contextos funerarios donde se encontraron los individuos, así como las lesiones del conducto auditivo externo (CAE).

Una serie de nuevas interpretaciones se han avanzado en fechas recientes sobre sobre la práctica mesoamericana de exhibir cabezas y cráneos sobre estructuras ceremoniales: los enigmáticos tzompantlis. Además de los reconocidos tzompantlis de la Gran Tenochtitlán y de Chichén Itzá, se avanzarán nuevas conjeturas y datos sobre regiones y eras que aún no han sido consideradas a profundidad en la revista. Tal es el rol de los procesamientos posteriores a la exhibición pública y el significado de los juegos de pelota. Se tematizarán los cráneos “tzompantli” y “trofeo” durante el clásico maya y otros más del norte de México y de Veracruz.

Este artículo tiene como tema la descripción de los contextos de hallazgo y proveniencia de la mica (flogopita o biotita)-- una materia prima importada de los valles centrales de Oaxaca—en la gran metrópolis de Teotihuacan en el centro de México, durante el periodo Clásico (primeros seis siglos de la Era cristiana). Más del 90% de la mica de Teotihuacan está concentrada en dos complejos arquitectónicos: el Grupo Viking, al sur de la Pirámide del Sol, y el complejo palaciego de Xalla, al norte de la Pirámide del Sol, dos espacios relacionados con la elite gobernante de la ciudad. En contraste, en otros conjuntos arquitectónicos, como el centro de barrio multiétnico de Teopancazco, también excavado por mi proyecto, hallamos gramos de mica.
Los ca. 37 kilogramos de mica hallados en Xalla fueron hallados por mi proyecto “Teotihuacan. Elite y gobierno” (1997-2016) en forma placas, triángulos, figuras trapezoidales, rectángulos, cuadrados y círculos, así como en fragmentos pequeños y polvo. En Xalla, fueron utilizados en las partes bajas de los muros; en Oztoyahualco 15B, en las rodelas que adornan incensarios tipo teatro; en Teopancazco, discos y formas geométricas acompañan entierros relevantes.
A través de análisis arqueométricos (difracción de rayos X, microscopía electronica de barrido, activación neutrónica), las micas de Xalla y Teopancazco se caracterizaron y compararon con yacimientos de mica de los valles centrales de Oaxaca (Las Trancas cerca de San Francisco Telixtlahuaca; Paraje Loma Gorda cerca de Cuilapan; Loma Yaguín cerca de Santo Tomás Jalieza; la mina moderna de Minerales de Antequera S.A. en Ocotlán de Morelos), y con mica prehispánica de los sitios arqueológicos de Monte Albán, Cerro de las Minas y Huamelulpan en Oaxaca. La mayoría de la mica prehispánica al parecer fue extraída del sitio de la minera moderna de Minerales de Antequera S.A. en Ejutla.


Abstract

This article addresses the contexts and provenance of mica (phlogopite or biotite), a foreign raw material imported from the Valley of Oaxaca, in the great metropolis of Teotihuacan in Central Mexico, during the Classic period (first six centuries CE). More than 90% of the mica found in the Classic city is concentrated in two compounds at Teotihuacan, the Xalla Palace and the Viking Group. The approximately 37 kg of sheet mica found thus far in the Xalla Palace occurs as cut plaques, triangles, trapezoidal figures, rectangles, and circles, as well as flake mica and thin blocks. Mica was used at Teotihuacan in varied contexts: as circles incorporated as “eyes” in theater-type censers as found in Oztoyahualco 15B; applied as decorations on walls and doorways (for example in the Xalla palace); and as disks and angular geometric figures in important burials at Teopancazco. However, the symbolic significance of mica at Teotihuacan is still difficult to assess. 
Xalla and the Viking Group were occupied by Teotihuacan’s ruling elite. Contrasting with the large amount of mica in these contexts is the small amount (measured in grams) found in neighborhood centers such as Teopancazco. The concentration of mica in Xalla and the Viking Group show that is was controlled by the Teotihuacan ruling elite.
Through archaeometric studies (X-ray diffraction, scan electron microscopy, neutron activation), mica from Xalla and Teopancazco are characterized and compared with sources of mica in the Valley of Oaxaca (Las Trancas near San Francisco Telixtlahuaca; Paraje Loma Gorda near Cuilapan; Loma Yaguín near Santo Tomás Jalieza; the modern mine of Minerales de Antequera S.A. in Ocotlán de Morelos), and with Prehispanic mica from the archaeological sites of Monte Albán, Cerro de las Minas, and Huamelulpan in Oaxaca. Most of the Prehispanic mica may have come from the area of the modern mine of Minerales de Antequera S.A. in Ejutla.

Considerations for a decolonized archaeological practice and interpretation, focusing on the relevance of cultural continuity in Mexico for the study of ancient visual art, particularly from the Oaxaca region (Classic sculpture and ceramics as well as postclassic codices).

It is a social study of the pre-Hispanic population of Monte Alban, Oaxaca, Mexico, through interpreting the diet of the settlers. The method was the analysis of trace elements in human skeletal remains, discerning if they came from consumed foods or from the burial context as a result of the mechanisms of deterioration.

Le site archéologique de Monte Albán, dans l’État d’Oaxaca, est l’un des centres cérémoniels préhispaniques les plus emblématiques du Mexique, classé au patrimoine culturel de l’humanité par l’UNESCO. Les centaines d’édifices qui forment ce vaste complexe architectural de plus 500 ha occupent le sommet d’une colline façonnée par l’homme au début du ier millénaire avant notre ère. Étudié entre 1931 et 1949 par Alfonso Caso, à qui l’on doit les premières analyses chronotypologiques céramiques, Monte Albán recèle encore nombre d’édifices demeurés inexplorés pendant près de soixante-dix ans. Au sud de l’occupation principale se trouve notamment le groupe architectural Siete Venado, un ensemble cérémoniel complet qui s’étend du nord au sud sur 30 ha, dominant de tous côtés la vallée d’Oaxaca. C’est là qu’intervient depuis 2009 l’équipe d’archéologues français du Centre de Recherche sur l’Amérique Préhispanique dirigée par Christian Duverger, en coordination avec l’INAH et l’UNAM, au Mexique, et leur équipe d’archéologues mexicains.

Cette monographie rend compte des quatre premières campagnes de fouilles au sein du Complexe Siete Venado de Monte Albán et des résultats sans précédent obtenus entre 2009 et 2012. Les travaux réalisés par les archéologues français grâce aux données inédites relatives aux édifices et aux offrandes de la période de fondation du site et à son processus complexe d’abandon permettent de renouveler considérablement les études anthropologiques du monde méso-américain.

Es complicado entender por completo los sistemas de planeación urbana de las ciudades prehispánicas de Mesoamérica, particularmente por la falta de documentos escritos de la época. El presente trabajo pretende dar una idea de cómo la Arquitectura y el Urbanismo estuvieron presentes entre los Zapotecas y la relación de éstos con la Ciencia.

La campagne 2016 de la mission archéologique Siete Venado a marqué la fin du second quadriennal dédié à l'exploration de la partie sud de Monte Albán, Oaxaca. Ce programme d'investigation franco-mexicain, en partenariat avec l'INAH, l'université Paris-Sorbonne et l'EHESS, se consacre depuis huit ans à l'exploration des places, patios et tombes de ce complexe architectural occupé entre 800 av. et 250 ap. J.-C. Du 13 octobre au 14 novembre 2016, l'équipe du CeRAP a poursuivi l'étude des modalités d'organisation de l'espace du centre cérémoniel, visant à comprendre les réaménagements successifs des places situées dans la partie méridionale du site.
