The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of mathematics motivation of primary school students and to identify its relationship with variables such as sex, grade level, school type, general success and mathematics success. The number of participants in this study was 709 primary school students from Aydin city center. The sampling was comprised of 345 third grade and 364 fourth grade students. Data were collected through a scale titled as “Primary School Mathematics Motivation Scale ” (PSMMS) developed by Ersoy and Oksuz in 2015. Findings gathered from the study illustrated that primary school students have a very positive motivation towards learning mathematics. Moreover, there was no significant difference, in students ' math scores of motivation with respect to gender and their grade levels. However, depending on the type of school, there was a significant difference in students ' math scores of motivation in favor of private schools. In addition to this, the lev...

The present study is an attempt to investigate the effect of a type of motivational strategy designed to boost EFL learners' motivation on their reading comprehension ability. To achieve this goal, 69 EFL learners studying English in two intact classes were divided into two groups. The control group received the traditional method of pre-reading, reading, and post-reading activities while the experimental group was asked to write compositions about the factors that motivate people to learn English and read them in the class before starting their usual classroom activities. This intervention was supposed to enhance their motivation leading to better performance on reading comprehension. Then, two paired-samples t-test were run to compare the scores of both groups on the preand post-tests. The results of the tests showed a significant increase in the mean scores of the experimental group whereas for the control group mean scores did not change dramatically. The results of these st...

This paper reports the results of a research, aimed to assess the motivational characteristics of a web-based course in Financial Mathematics, using Keller’s ARCS model of motivation. A randomly assigned sample of 84 students, from a private institute of vocational training in Athens, Greece, was asked to complete twice the Instructional Material Motivation Survey (IMMS) instrument. A pre-post evaluation research design was employed. By comparing pre and post survey results, researchers identified core motivational issues and examined how they change over time. Inferential statistical tests were used to confirm the statistically significant development of certain motivational characteristics along all dimensions of the web-based course. Each identified instructional component was found to have a unique impact on instructional outcomes. The findings of this study can help future researchers to design and develop more effective instructional interventions in economic education.

During the past three decades, the achievement goal approach to achievement motivation has emerged as an influential area of research, and is dedicated to understanding the reasons behind the individual's drive to achieve competence and performance. However, the current literature on achievement goals is segmented rather than integrated. That is, citations across the three major and distinct achievement domains (work, education, and sports) are more the exception than the rule and similarities and differences between findings for the different achievement domains have yet to be tested. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships between self-reported achievement goals and nonself-report performance through meta-analysis, and the moderating potential of achievement domain. Identifying achievement domain as moderator improves our understanding to which contexts we can (not) generalize conclusions to, it helps to understand seemingly inconsistent findings, and...

The recent emergence of digital authoring tools related to Augmented Reality (AR), such as Zooburst, Roar or Aumentaty, has facilitated the integration of this cutting-edge technology in Education. Consequently, different publications have come out to light about the affordances and limitations of integrating technology AR in the EFL/ESL classroom. Thus, this study seeks to analyze and review the recent trends in AR implementation in the English as a Foreign Language Classroom (EFL) and to present the main projects aimed at teaching English with AR-based projects that have been published in the latest years in WOS and Scopus. Following the methodology, the improvement in the performance of the student in different areas of study has been proved while using AR in EFL teaching.

This article considers issues in educational reform, particularly accountability- oriented policies, and student motivation. We argue that prominent theories of motivation derived from cognitive traits/states are antithetical to the assumptions underlying conventional assessment formats and accountability-oriented reforms. We advance an alternative perspective that emerges from sociocultural assumptions. In this perspective, the values and beliefs that motivate engagement in learning reside alongside the practices that characterize knowledge communities and, together, constitute a model of practice. We therefore explore the complex issue of reconciliation between the activities of individuals and social contexts and how “dialectical” reconciliation addresses tensions between classroom assessment and external testing, and between formative and summative functions of assessment. Data and conclusions from a program of research in science education illustrate and warrant these considerations.

Good teaching at the middle grades comes out of a deep understanding of the unique cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and moral needs of young adolescents. Specialized preparation therefore is necessary to help teacher candidates understand how to operationalize the intersection of young adolescent development and the effective pedagogy that addresses their needs. This paper focuses on a qualitative study of experienced middle school teachers who graduated from a middle level preparation program or an elementary or secondary preparation program in terms of how well prepared they felt and feel to meet the widely varied needs of young adolescents. Confidence in preparation leads to high self-efficacy, which is important for perseverance and effectiveness. Graduates of a middle level preparation program reported higher levels of confidence in their preparation to teach young adolescents.

In this paper, we present a study of exploring academics’ current practices and perceptions towards social media, and its potential educational use in higher education. With the growing popularity of social media, many studies have focused on the needs, motivation, opinions and experiences of the students. However further research is needed to investigate the social media adoption in education from educators’ standpoint. The study investigates current tendencies, beliefs and opinions of the academics as regards to social media from emotional and motivational perspectives in a threefold; personal, professional and educational. An extensive questionnaire was developed and administrated to faculty members. Our research is motivated by the idea of the utmost importance of determining the academics’ perceptions of social media in order to form the foundation on which strategies about how to best utilize it in higher education can be shaped. The range of perceptions evidenced from the par...

This book defines engagement for the field of language learning and contextualizes it within existing work on the psychology of language learning and teaching. Chapters address broad substantive questions concerned with what engagement is or looks like, and how it can be theorized for the language classroom; methodological questions related to the design, measurement and analysis of engagement in language classrooms and beyond; as well as applied issues examining its antecedents, factors inhibiting and enhancing it, and conditions fostering the reengagement of language learners who have become disengaged. Through a mix of conceptual and empirical chapters, the book explores similarities and differences between motivation and engagement and addresses questions of whether, how and why learners actually do exert effort, allocate attention, participate and become involved in tangible language learning and use. It will serve as an authoritative benchmark for future theoretical and empirical research into engagement within the classroom and beyond, and will be of interest to anyone wishing to understand the unique insights and contributions the topic of engagement can make to language learning and teaching.

In today’s world, where learning a foreign language is highly prioritized, it is an important prerequisite that education has components that are lasting, meaningful, and transferable to everyday life. Moreover, these components would have a positive influence on student motivation. The purpose of this study is to investigate students’ language learning motivation and views about integration of Understanding by Design (UbD) into their lessons. The study was carried out through mixed method research. For the quantitative part, pre-test post-test experimental design was carried out while action research was instrumented for the qualitative part of the study. 10 teachers and 436 students participated the study. Of the 436 students, 225 were in the treatment group and 211 were in the control group. Through the action research, 10 instructors who were trained about UbD, were divided into four groups, each of which designed three different unit plans and implemented them in their classes....

Background: This study examined the relationship of academic performance with the Big Five traits of personality, academic motivation, and gender in a cross-cultural context. Methods: Participants in the study were 424 university students of physical education (PE) departments from Poland (53%) and Ukraine (47%). Undergraduates completed a brief version of the International Personality Item Pool (Mini-IPIP) to assess the Five-Factor model of personality, the Academic Motivations Scale (AMS), and grade point average (GPA). Results: Polish PE students scored higher in emotional stability and extroversion and had a higher GPA than Ukrainian PE undergraduates. Gender differences were found in both personality traits and academic motivation scales. Intrinsic motivation may predict academic performance. Conscientiousness and intellect emerged as mediators of the relationship between intrinsic motivation and academic performance and gender was found as a moderator in the relationship betwe...

This study investigates the level of social interaction, its determinants and influence on the instructors’ motivation and work efficiency in an online university in Pakistan. Exploratory case study design has been used for this purpose. Data was gathered through participant observations and one-to-one interviews. Ten interviews were conducted from instructors belonging to four different departments. Observations were carried out for a period of one month. The study revealed that in the online university, level of social interaction was lower than a traditional one. Instructors pointed out various reasons behind it including high workload, seating arrangements, and attitude of some of the heads. Even when they had free time and opportunities, most of the them preferred browsing through the internet or chatting with their fellows through computers. It appeared that the online culture and intense human-computer interaction had made them addicted to machines. Almost all the instructors...

Abstract The study explored the role of Grit and future selves in motivational intensity and persistence in second language (L2) learning. Questionnaire data were collected from 94 learners of Chinese as a foreign language in the context of the United States. Multiple regression results showed that the Perseverance of Effort (POE) component of Grit along with Ideal L2 Self/Own and Ought L2 Self/Own significantly predicted Motivational Intensity. In addition, the relationship between POE and Motivational Intensity was mediated by the two selves. With Persistence as the outcome variable, POE, Ideal L2 Self/Own and Ideal L2 Self/Other emerged as positive predictors whereas Ought L2 Self/Other was a negative predictor. Furthermore, Ideal L2 Self/Own mediated the relationship between POE and Persistence. The results cast doubt on the validity of Grit as a unitary construct, suggest that different selves predict qualitatively different motivated behaviors, and confirm that POE along with future selves form a strong motivational force.

Motivation is a determining factor in the learning process, and encourages the student to participate in activities that increase their performance. Learning strategies supplemented by computer technology in a scenario-based learning environment can improve students’ motivation for spatial knowledge acquisition. In this sense, a workshop carried out with 43-second year engineering students supported by Google Street View mobile geospatial application for location-based tasks is presented, in which participants work in an immersive wayfinding 3D urban environment on virtual reality. Students use their own smartphones with Google Street View application integrated in virtual reality (VR) 3D glasses with a joystick as locomotion interface. The tool to analyse the motivational factor of this pedagogical approach is the multidimensional measurement device Intrinsic Motivation Inventory with six subscales: interest, perceived competence, perceived choice, effort, tension, and value, measu...
