Reinterpreting what Edward B. Taylor derogatorily defined as fetishism and superstition, Eduardo Viveiros de Castro proposes Animism as an alternative take on the critique of the concept of subject from the “periphery” of Western philosophy, inspiring an “ontological turn” towards a post-structuralist anthropology. The thesis paper focusses on the constitution of the subject in Amerindian relational, perspectivist and multinaturalist ontologies. As dynamic, fluid, bodily, non-identical and variable entity, the Amerindian subject is not an individuum but rather a relational texture or assemblage, to whom stability and inseparability are not essential. Within an interpersonal network, personhood constitutes itself only through the relation to others. In a multinaturalist ontology, culture figures as universal: Both non-humans and humans are endowed with agency, consciousness and intentionality, and therefore emerge as potential persons.

Eduardo Viveiros de Castro hat mit seinem 2002 in Brasilien und erst 2017 in Deutschland erschienenen Werk „Die Unbeständigkeit der wilden Seele“ nicht nur in der Anthropologie einen „ontological turn“ angeregt. Seine Deutung des Animismus in amerindischen Kosmologien als Ausdruck einer relationalen, perspektivistischen und multinaturalistischen Ontologie formuliert die Kritik des Subjektbegriffs aus der Perspektive der „Peripherie“ der europäischen Philosophie der Moderne. Das amerindische Subjekt ist ein fluides, dynamischen und relationales Gefüge, das sich nur in der Beziehung zu anderen Wesen konstituiert und untrennbar an die eigene Körperlichkeit gebunden ist. „Subjekt“ und „Objekt“ lassen sich in dieser Perspektive als transzendente Beziehungsrelata lesen, als qualitative Urteile über den Grad einer Beziehung. Während der Kosmos aus multiplen Naturen besteht, wird Kultur als universal angesetzt. So gelten sowohl menschliche wie nichtmenschliche Akteure als potentielle Personen, die über Intentionalität und Handlungsmacht verfügen.

Zum Entstehungszeitpunkt der Arbeit waren die Schriften Viveiros de Castros noch nicht in Deutschland erschienen. Die Monographie „A Inconstancia da alma selvagem" war bisher nur in Brasilien veröffentlicht worden. Inzwischen liegt eine deutsche Übersetzung von Oliver Precht vor: Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, „Die Unbeständigkeit der wilden Seele“, Wien: Turia u. Kant 2017.

This article examines the work of a group of scientists who contributed to influential climate policy approaches while taking part in groundbreaking research on climate transformations. The scientists promoted a policy approach known as REDD+, which was designed to slow climate change by paying forest landholders to not cut their forests. These scientists also made important contributions to the science of the Anthropocene, which is premised on the idea that humanity has become a geological force that is transforming the planet in dis-ruptive ways. I argue that their science and policy efforts are at odds with anthropological critiques that view environmentalists as experts who see themselves as bearing exceptional " cultural " capacities and therefore as capable of protecting or improving " Nature. " In a region of Amazonia, the science of the Anthropocene and the associated REDD+ projects moved beyond ontological understandings that divide the world into the opposing spheres of Nature and Culture. The scientists did not see themselves as inhabiting a " cultural " sphere from which they could protect Amazonia as a " natural " object, but rather they used REDD+ projects to immerse themselves in what they felt were irreversible, uncontrollable, and disruptive socioenvironmental transformations. [Anthropocene, Brazilian Amazonia, climate politics, political ontology, REDD+] " I believe we will be able to address and even try mitigating climate change... but this will only take place after a good deal of suffering. " My interviewee, an environmental scientist I will call Derek, talked about dismal futures as we discussed policy-oriented environmental research projects in which he was involved. This was the first of ninety-six conversations that, since 2010, I have carried out with environmental scientists—from graduate students to Nobel Prize winners—who work at the thresholds of science and policymaking in Amazonia. Some of my interlocutors designed ambitious research projects so others could use their results in the design and implementation of novel climate policies. Others took on the role of policymakers themselves and drafted and advocated for climate policy proposals that were highly influential in environmental forums in Brazil and the United Nations. In this article, I examine the policy-oriented work of scientists who believed that " a good deal of suffering " would be unavoidable and that projects designed to arrest potentially catastrophic socioenvironmental transformations would be ineffectual. I argue that my interlocutors' characteristically bleak approach to climate politics challenges conventional anthropological critiques of dominant environmental approaches. The policy approach Derek and his colleagues promoted was known as REDD+ (an acronym for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation—the plus sign signifies improved carbon stocks). The REDD+ idea was the following: imagine a company that wants to claim it is " going green " but whose revenue is tied to activities that generate greenhouse gas emissions. A Educação em Ciências e os documentos oficiais que regulamentam a educação no Brasil relacionam fortemente a aquisição de conhecimentos científicos e a cidadania técnico-científica. Com o objetivo de instigar o debate sobre a educação científica para a cidadania, investigamos as conexões entre a participação cidadã e o conhecimento científico, na controvérsia sobre a instalação do Projeto Apolo na Serra do Gandarela, em Minas Gerais, Brasil. Tal polêmica mobiliza atores diversos: leigos, pesquisadores, políticos, empresas, recursos naturais, movimentos populares, entre outros. Diante da heterogeneidade dos participantes na disputa, fez-se necessário reunir ferramentas teóricas e analíticas que compartilhassem da perspectiva da ecologia política. O conjunto de ferramentas concebido para essa pesquisa foi fortemente fundamentado pela Teoria Ator-Rede (ANT). A ANT foi aliada à noção de cosmos e à proposta cosmopolítica, com grande contribuição do conjunto de ferramentas fornecido pela cartografia de controvérsias. Os resultados permitem concluir que a educação científica para a cidadania deveria investir na participação dos estudantes em questões técnico-científicas de interesse público e em práticas que abram espaços para as manifestações das multinaturezas dos objetos técnico-científicos.

Abstract: In recent years the Science Education strongly related the acquisition of scientific knowledge as a prerequisite for technical-scientific citizenship. Aiming to provoke the debate about science teaching for citizenship, we investigate the connections between citizen participation and scientific knowledge in the controversy regarding the installation of the Apolo Project in Sierra Gandarela, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This controversy includes several actors, as: lay people, researchers, politicians, businessmen, natural resources - especially water - popular movements. The heterogeneity of the participants in the dispute created the need for bringing together theoretical and analytical tools that share the perspective of political ecology, as presented by Latour. Therefore, the set of tools designed for this research was strongly founded by Actor-Network Theory (ANT). ANT was combined with the notion of cosmos and cosmopolitics proposed by Stengers and also with the controversy mapping. The results show that science education for citizenship should focus on student participation in technichal scientific issues of public interest, and on practices that make room for the manifestations of the multinaturalism of technical and scientific objects.

Resumen: La Educación en Ciencia y los documentos oficiales que regulan la educación en Brasil se relacionan fuertemente con la adquisición de los conocimientos científicos y la ciudadanía técnica y científica. Con el objetivo de provocar el debate sobre la educación científica de la ciudadanía, se investiga la conexión entre la participación ciudadana y el conocimiento científico en la controversia sobre la instalación del Proyecto Apolo en Sierra Gandarela en Minas Gerais, Brasil. Tal controversia moviliza varios actores: laicos, los investigadores, los políticos, las empresas, los recursos naturales, los movimientos populares, entre otros. A frente la heterogeneidad de los participantes en la disputa, fue necesario reunir herramientas teóricas y analíticas que comparten la perspectiva de la ecología política. El conjunto de herramientas diseñadas para esta investigación fue basada fuertemente en Teoría del Actor-Red (ANT). La ANT se combinó con la idea de cosmos y la propuesta cosmopolítica, con gran aporte de herramientas proporcionado por la controversia de controversias. Los resultados muestran que la educación científica para la ciudadanía debe invertir en la participación estudiantil en los aspectos técnicos y científicos de interés y en las prácticas que se pueden abrir espacios para las manifestaciones de multinaturalezas de objetos técnicos-científicos.

The proposal, in a nutshell, is to think of the cosine as a function that arises when studying "toroidal phenomena" --like the angular momentum-- with theories based on the presumption of a topologically spherical space-time.
This conjecture, which intends to be located in the origins of General Relativ-ity, needs a correct definition of the existent here called "toroidal phenomenon". That is to say, we will have to pause a moment in the assumptions about space-time that we seek to question. Modesty aside, let's think of as an analogy in Einstein's effort to convince the scientific community that Space and Time were not two independent existents, but that one could transform one into the other according to the observer. That questioning, of the ontological type, will be the branch of this work that I would most like to emphasize.
As I have not known how to have the mathematical capabilities-or luck-to find a "perihelion of Mercury" that gives experimental value to the topological proposal that I seek to present, what I will do instead will be to analyze the conjecture using three "metaphysical frames of references", in three independent sections, hoping to convince "by convergence" (or, by insistence...):
⊕ Epistemological arguments: I will present the "toroidal phenomena" as a "mode of resonance" (or, adapting Bruno Latour, a "mode of existence" [1]) of a universe that I will assume infinitely complex.
⊕ Geometric Arguments: I will draw on a known result [2][3][4] that relates the first non-spherical mode of a non-rotating black hole perturbation with a slowly rotating black hole. This small step between one space-time and another, which turns out to be topologically identifiable with the boundary figure between a a sphere and a toroid, will be the cornerstone on which the proposed generalization will be based.
⊕ Graphical Arguments: Through the use of Penrose Diagrams --the most commonly used space-time maps in General Relativity-- I will show that the toroid is not only intuited from continuous deformations of the diagram, but even seems to suggest simple explanations for the timelike closed curves and infinite parallel universes "predicted" by classical theory.
