Occasionally the archaeological ship reconstructor is fortunate enough to encounter the remains of a vessel on which shipwrights' design marks have been preserved. La Belle (1684) has the most extensive and complete set of such marks documented to date. The distinguishing features of the distribution, number, and placement of La Belle's surmarks associate it with a graphic design system of "geometric fairing with diagonals," which was in use in French shipbuilding in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Section I of this essay presents the archaeological and documentary evidence that supports the conclusion that a graphic design system of "geometric fairing with diagonals" was used in La Belle's construction. It also discusses how and which specific measurements were applied to the reconstructed design procedures to regenerate La Belle's archaeologically documented hull shape.

Section II examines whether La Belle's design system was a completely new invention or whether it was developed from existing concepts of ship design. It will be argued that this system actually expanded on the basic concepts of Mediterranean moulding—a non-graphic design system of geometric fairing that was in use in European shipbuilding for centuries prior to La Belle's construction—in the process of adapting them to the methods of orthographic drawing.

MGPS Cofferdam is an equipment to be attached at the submerge part of the ship’s hull, to create an watertight environment for the safety cutting, welding, or another underwater activities. The activity here for the MGPS Cofferdam is the changing of the rise pipe at side of the submerged part of hull.

Pre-and post-swirl fins-based energy-saving devices (ESD) are designed to improve the propulsive performances of a twin-screw ship. To this aim, BEM and RANSE calculations are employed. Depending on the application, a simple actuator disc model (post-swirl) with radially varying load or a combined BEM/RANSE method for self-propulsion prediction (preswirl) are required. Both the approaches are included in a framework for a design by optimization, where systematic variations of the ESD geometry are used to explore the design space and maximize the energy-saving effect of the devices. Considering the particularity of the case selected for the study, results show encouraging improvements that reach a promising 5% in the case of the combined action of both devices.

Considering the expanding industry for offshore units, offshore support vessels are also in the trend of increasing. In this sense, more complex and more demanding technologies are emerging especially for new designs of these type of vessels. Therefore, it is of great importance to have a framework based on risk assessment. In the maritime domain, risk is evaluated within the framework of the Formal Safety Assessment (FSA) which has become an internationally recognized and recommended method. This article discusses methodological requirements for the risk perspective of offshore support vessels. A perspective that is proposed here which considers risk as a set encompassing in the following: a set of plausible scenarios leading to an accident, the likelihoods of unwanted events within the scenarios, the consequences of the events and description of uncertainty. For this purpose, we introduce a qualitative scoring system, and we show its applicability on an exemplary risk model for an offshore support vessel.

This article discusses several minor refinements to Titanic's design based on experience with some specific riveted joints on Olympic (similar changes were then incorporated into Olympic and Britannic).  It is a greatly expanded version of an article originally made available on the Titanic Research & Modelling Association (TRMA) website in 2005, which published information about these changes for the first time.  This expanded article appeared in the British Titanic Society journal Atlantic Daily Bulletin in December 2019.

Una rivoluzione recente quella dei containers e del trasporto marittimo degli stessi, una rivoluzione strisciante che oggi è diventata condizione del benessere, una rivoluzione scarsamente percepita dall’ opinione pubblica sino a che la sua importanza non è apparsa in tutta la sua gravità e implicazioni in occasione dell’ incaglio di una mega-portacontainers nel canale di Suez.
Oggi si parla di portacontainer da decine di migliaia di TEU, numero enorme di “pezzi” la cui movimentazione richiede una organizzazione complessa ma anche capillare, attenta ai minimi dettagli, nonché una attenta gestione tecnico-nautica della nave
Al gigantismo delle “navi madre” che possono solo scalare terminali attrezzati, sempre più specializzati, si è aggiunto il controllo di questi “snodi” da parte  della stesse “mani”, pochi operatori che, abbiamo visto nella “prova generale” del blocco del Canale di Suez, possono mettere in ginocchio l’ economia mondiale, agendo su poche leve di comando.

Come si è giunti a questo? come premessa ad un’ analisi di questa situazione, è utile conoscere come, in pochissimi anni, si sia arrivati a questa gestione degli scambi, in particolare per la parte marittima.

Begitu juga dengan Special Purpose Ships (SPS) juga harus memenuhi persyaratan regulasi yang berlaku. Kali ini Penulis akan memaparkan lebih lanjut kaitannya dengan regulasi SPS kaitannya dengan Machinery Installations yang akan dijelaskan dalam Bab Pembahasan.

Likewise, the buying behaviour of men and women are also not same. In generally larger portion of women than men opt for online cloth shopping. Even though there are studies concerning e-commerce and perception of the customers about online cloth shopping, there is a gap when it comes exclusively to the buying behaviour of women from Myntra after the covid 19 pandemic. This research paper is an attempt to find out the Perception of women customers on cloth shopping from Myntra with special reference to post covid 19 scenarios.

Manajemen mutu dapat dianggap memiliki tiga komponen utama: pengendalian mutu, jaminan mutu dan perbaikan mutu. Manajemen mutu berfokus tidak hanya pada mutu produk, namun juga cara untuk mencapainya. Manajemen mutu menggunakan jaminan mutu dan pengendalian terhadap proses dan produk untuk mencapai mutu secara lebih konsisten. b. Pengendalian Mutu dalam Proses Pengedokan Kapal Docking Kapal adalah suatu peristiwa pemindahan kapal dari air/laut ke atas dock dengan bantuan fasilitas docking/pengedockan. Untuk melakukan pengedokan kapal ini, harus dilakukan persiapan yang matang dan berhati-hati mengingat spesifikasi kapal yang berbeda-beda. Mengingat besarnya biaya yang dikeluarkan pihak owner dalam melakukan proses repair/perbaikan kapal. Maka diperlukan perhatian serius dalam proses memasukkan kapal naik ke dry dock. Hal ini dikarenakan saat-saat kapal yang paling ekstrem adalah pada saat setengah badan kapal kering dan setengah basah. Kehati-hatian dengan tetap mempertahankan kualitas mutu merupakan kunci dari proses pengedokan yang sukses. Standar mutu yang baik perlu disiapkan oleh pihak galangan dan owner demi kelancaran proses dari awal kapal datang ke galangan sampai naik 100 persen ke atas dok. SUMMARY Most serious accidents at sea are caused by minor incidents that escalated into an uncontrolled situation. This study is aiming to develop a model to investigate the likelihood of fatal accidents, given that a critical incident has already occurred. The focus of the study is on human behaviour, adopting a hardware reliability perspective. The vessel is considered as a safety-critical system to be protected by several barriers. The crew role is modelled as active barriers and distinguishing between different functions: perception, decision and action. A Markov approach is proposed to model different situations on the vessel. A mathematical model to estimate the probability of failure in an emergency situation is formulated. A new parameter is defined for the survivability of a vessel, given that a critical incident has taken place. The methods were applied to examine ship-platform collisions cases and the results show strong benefits for diagnosing and evaluating accidents from a human factors perspective as well as for training purposes.

This report describes the modelling of an appended yacht hull that is free to heave and pitch with CFX v15.0, a finite volume Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code developed by ANSYS. The model is validated against experimental towing tank data, and is compared with predictions made using the Delft Systematic Yacht Hull Series (DSYHS) regression equations, and the results of a panel code.

This thesis describes the construction of two models of La Belle, a light frigate constructed in France during the late seventeenth century. The archaeological remains of La Belle are important as a unique example of a little understood vessel type and as an informative example of several construction techniques that were in use in the French shipyards at the end of the seventeenth century.


Using data recorded during the excavation and conservation of the original ship's timbers, historical documents, and contemporary drawings and models as guides, various configurations of La Belle's structure were created to determine her probable appearance. Whenever possible, the original materials and construction techniques were closely approximated to determine their effect on the overall appearance of the ship. Many of the artifacts excavated from the original vessel were reproduced in scale and incorporated into the model to determine their influence on the layout of the ship's structure.


The resulting model provides not only a picture of a specific ship type, but also, a glimpse into the technologies that existed at the time La Belle was constructed. The vessel may have been small in comparison to other naval vessels of the 17th century, but her contributions to our knowledge of shipbuilding and ship design are immense.

To find the most suitable trim angle for a planing hull, as a high-speed marine craft, is not an easy task. The right trim angle yields the best performance of a planing hull. It is the main task of this work to develop and provide proposed design contours for the best planing hull trim angles. These trim angles should yield minimum total drag and keep the hull off dynamic-instability regime (porpoising), at different speed ranges. This has been accomplished through hydrodynamic investigation of planing hull performance at different trim angles and speed ranges. In the present work, hydrodynamic equilibrium of planing hull has been considered. In addition, new hydrodynamic applications of transom flap, longitudinal shifting of weights, and proposed wind spoiler have been introduced as trim controlling devices. These applied devices improve and optimize the control of planing hull trim angles at different speeds, aiming to achieve best possible planing hull performance. To perform an optimization process and develop design contours for the best operating trim, three phases of computer program, have been specially designed. Applications of the present analysis have been performed on specific planing hull geometry. Useful and encouraging, results for the best trim angles operating regimes have been determined for different hull designs at different ranges of speed.
