Networked Communities

The internet has always been a boys club. Women who choose to delve deeper into the net than their email inboxes needn't look very far to find themselves bombarded by the proliferation of archaic negative gender-based stereotypes in almost every digital space, including online games, meme culture, forums, online journalism, YouTube, and beyond. Every major platform and communication model online appears to be a megaphone for men to remind women that women don't belong or that they are only allowed to participate if they accept their role as objects of admiration or quiet, non-opinionated users, in the event they aren't deemed attractive enough for the former role. It is not uncommon for women online to be stalked, to receive death threats, and to be doxxed. And it is implicitly accepted that women will be under constant scrutiny in most digital spaces, especially if they dare to question these pervasive misogynistic field conditions. These threats can be alarming even when exclusively digital, as women have been raped in online spaces as early as 1993 (Dibbell, 1993).

Master of Arts—Integrated Studies 656: Datascapes: Information Aesthetics and Network Culture critically examines the intersections of the information arts and information technologies in our rapidly changing times, and explores how cross-pollination between these fields alters not only art and culture but the world we live in. Through exploring the differences among how contextualized information, data, and knowledge are written in and by a diversity of media, this course maps the unique shapes that information assumes in digital culture. It engages new approaches to understanding the transformation that information is enacting on our temporal, spatial, and visual perceptions. The increasing fragmentation of cultural structures and the rise of connectivity as a new paradigm is evident all around us, from the world of medicine to multinational capital to the World Wide Web. The ascendance of the database as a new pre-eminent cultural form begins to blur the boundaries between art and reality, and representation and simulation, and creates new social networks necessary for interactive engagement.

Community-based organizations are important health system stakeholders as they provide numerous, often highly valued programs and services to the members of their community. However, community-based organizations are described using diverse terminology and concepts from across a range of disciplines. To better understand the literature related to community-based organizations in the health sector (i.e., those working in health systems or more broadly to address population or public health issues), we conducted a scoping review by using an iterative process to identify existing literature, conceptually map it, and identify gaps and areas for future inquiry. We searched 18 databases and conducted citation searches using 15 articles to identify relevant literature. All search results were reviewed in duplicate and were included if they addressed the key characteristics of community-based organizations or networks of community-based organizations. We then coded all included articles based on the country focus, type of literature, source of literature, academic discipline, disease sector, terminology used to describe organizations and topics discussed. We identified 186 articles addressing topics related to the key characteristics of community-based organizations and/or networks of community-based organizations. The literature is largely focused on high-income countries and on mental health and addictions, HIV/AIDS or general/unspecified populations. A large number of different terms have been used in the literature to describe community-based organizations and the literature addresses a range of topics about them (mandate, structure, revenue sources and type and skills or skill mix of staff), the involvement of community members in organizations, how organizations contribute to community organizing and development and how they function in networks with each other and with government (e.g., in policy networks). Given the range of terms used to describe community-based organizations, this scoping review can be used to further map their meanings/definitions to develop a more comprehensive typology and understanding of community-based organizations. This information can be used in further investigations about the ways in which community-based organizations can be engaged in health system decision-making and the mechanisms available for facilitating or supporting their engagement.

Following the published article titled "Networked Management Museum Model" http://www.igorcalzada.com/cultura-20-videoconferencia-innovacampmediterrane-citilab-cornella-barcelona-22-23-5-09, Dr Calzada argues that the Welfare State is suffering the consequences of the savage neoliberal austerity-driven ideology where cultural resources like Museums are directly affected. Nevertheless, this crisis could lead us to debate alternative cultural management models without loosing the core values that the Welfare State built for decades.

However, the digital context of the twenty-first century enables instant access to fashion information, influences and influencers, allowing us to be as informed as many experts. Hantavirus, one of the deadliest viruses known to humans, hospitalizes tens of thousands of people each year in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Transmitted by infected rodents and their excreta, Hantavirus are identified as etiologic agents of two main types of diseases-Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, the latter having a fatality rate of above 40 %. Although considerable research for over two decades has been going on in this area, bibliometric studies to gauge the state of research of this field have been rare. An analysis of 2631 articles, extracted from WoS databases on Hantavirus between 1980 and 2014, indicated a progressive increase (R (2) = 0.93) in the number of papers over the years, with the majority of papers being published in the USA and Europe. About 95 % papers were co-authored and the most common arrangement was 4-6 authors per paper. Co-authorship has seen a steady increase (R (2) = 0.57) over the years. We apply research collaboration network analysis to investigate the best-connected authors in the field. The author-based networks have 49 components (connected clump of nodes) with 7373 vertices (authors) and 49,747 edges (co-author associations) between them. The giant component (the largest component) is healthy, occupying 84.19 % or 6208 vertices with 47,117 edges between them. By using edge-weight threshold, we drill down into the network to reveal bonded communities. We find three communities' hotspots-one, led by researchers at University of Helsinki, Finland; a second, led by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, USA; and a third, led by Hokkaido University, Japan. Significant correlation was found between author's structural position in the network and research performance, thus further supporting a well-studied phenomenon that centrality effects research productivity. However, it was the PageRank centrality that out-performed degree and betweenness centrality in its strength of correlation with research performance.

Most research approaches globalization from a top-down perspective that looks at how past economic, political, and cultural arrangements influence non-Western cultures. This essay instead uses the concept of the networked audience as an entry point to understand the dynamics of cultural globalization. We first discuss the mass audience in relation to cultural imperialism/homogenization. We then examine the recent shift to the networked audience in the context of digital globalization, computer networking, and social media. Afterwards, we investigate how the conceptualization of global networked audiences contributes to new understandings of global cultures and exchanges. The network perspective suggests that the traditional conceptualization of globalization via the centerperiphery model no longer works, but rather that cultural flows through networks enable individuals to have some, but limited, agency and power to resist corporate and elite controls. 1 | INTRODUCTION Past research on globalization largely focuses on how Western political, economic, and cultural forces shape non-Western societies. Аннотация. Работа нацелена на изучение проблемы легитимности политического режима Китая в условиях эволюции сетевых коммуникаций. Методологической основой послужили принципы функционального подхода, сравнительного анализа и контент-анализа. В статье исследованы виртуальные сетевые сообщества Китая. Подчеркивается, что страна уходит от односторонней цензуры («строгого Дракона») к более гибким приемам «умного Дракона», подразумевающих создание собственных социальных сетей, провластных сообществ, приложений и других лояльных ресурсов, поэтому обеспечение цифрового суверенитета и прочной легитимности китайской власти достигается через последовательное включение «политикумов» в особый «сетевой полис». Также автор делает ряд терминологических уточнений. Во-первых, политический режим рассмотрен как определенный порядок функционирования политической системы, введенный политической элитой страны. Во-вторых, под легитимностью политического режима понимается согласие общества и власти по поводу оптимальности и справедливости практики технологий и коммуникаций существующих политических институтов. The work is aimed at studying the problem of the legitimacy of the political regime of China in the context of the evolution of network communications. The methodological basis was the principles of a functional approach, comparative analysis and content analysis. The article explores China's virtual network communities. It is emphasized that the country is moving away from one-sided censorship («strict Dragon») to more flexible methods of «smart Dragon», which imply the creation of their own social networks, pro-government communities, applications and other loyal resources, therefore ensuring digital sovereignty and lasting legitimacy of Chinese power is achieved through consistent inclusion of «politicum» in a special «Network Polis». The author also makes a number of terminological refinements. Firstly, the political regime is considered as a certain order of functioning of the political system, introduced by the political elite of the country. Secondly, the legitimacy of the political regime is understood as the consent of society and the authorities regarding the optimality and fairness of the technology and communications practices of existing political institutions. Thirdly, a network polis is interpreted as a set of interest-dependent network arenas of civic participation, through which network political identities, cultures and political agendas are formed that provide legitimization / delegation of a specific political system, its state and political regime.

Software engineering evolved from a rigid process to a dynamic interplay of people (e.g. stakeholders or developers). Organizational and social literature call this interplay an organizational social structure (OSS). Software practitioners still lack a systematic way to select, analyze and support OSSs best fitting their problems (e.g. software development). We provide the state-of-the-art in OSSs, and discuss mechanisms to support OSS-related decisions in software engineering (e.g. choosing the OSS best fitting development scenarios). Our data supports two conclusions. First, software engineering focused on building software using project teams alone, yet these are one of thirteen OSS flavors from literature. Second, an emerging OSS should be further explored for software development: social networks. This article represents a first glimpse at OSS-aware software engineering, that is, to engineer software using OSSs best fit for the problem.

The article focuses on the conference Mindplay held on January 20, 2006 at London Metropolitan University in England. It was organised by the Group for Research in Interactive Media within the Department of Applied Sciences. The conference focused on play and interaction within digital media environments. The core themes of the conference are listed. Mindplay is defined. The production of play and play experiences are discussed.

Nodes in the real world networks organize in the form of network communities. A community (also referred
to as module or cluster)is defined as where the links are denser inside the nodes and sparser outside the
nodes in the network. Communities in the networks also overlap because the nodes may belong to different
clusters at once. The task of detecting communities in networks becomes an open problem because of lack
of reliable algorithms. In practice all the existing community detection methods work good for nonoverlapping
communities and fail to detect communities with dense overlaps. We developed a novel method
for detecting communities by considering a single seed node. This method successfully captures the
overlapping networks ranging from social to information and from biological to citation networks. We
believe that the proposed system works well for the overlapping communities.

Social Innovation & Territory:
Future of City-Regions’ challenges.

This lecturing is going to summarize the main conclusions of the City-Region / Euskal Hiria Congress 2012 that was held in Bilbao, Spain, in November 2012, with the participation of the academic Fredrik Björk and the practitioner Ulf Kyrling coming from Oresund to talk about CityRegions. Dr. Calzada will present the main challenges from the Social Innovation approach (Moulaert & Mulgan)  in the postcrisis era for any territory. He is carrying out his research as the continuation of his book (you can download it under CreativeCommons3.0 license at the Future of Cities Programme of the University of Oxford (UK) as a PostDoctoral Research Fellow. He also holds the Ikerbasque, Basque Foundation for Science Fellow position.

At this lecture, he will focus his presentation on the CityRegion concept and its real challenges nowadays.

His interest to coming to Malmö quite often (he was in 2011) is due to the open collaboration with the University of Malmö in order to work in the Comparative Territorial Benchmarking project comparing Basque Country and Oresund as City-Regions.

This lecture is going to be based on the recent chapter about “the Mondragon case” of Dr. Calzada in the International Handbook of Social Innovation by Edward Elgar coordinated by Frank Moulaert.

Mondragon case has been really researched in the last two decades as one of the well-known cooperative worldwide experience in the Basque Country, Spain. However, the globalization and the Postcrisis era are changing the dynamics and nature of the Mondragon reality.
