In this study, the relations between feedback and communication are investigated. More specifically the important applications of feedback in oral communication are tried to be understood. The central idea of communication is to increase commonality or sharing of information among participants. In the participatory communication or in two-way communication, feedback helps to determine the level of acceptance, understanding, and impact of the message on the receiver. To frame a feedback of message and to interpret feedback message in communication is always a challenging and demanding one. So the present study aims at determining the relationship between "levels of understanding" or the impact of a message and the " nonverbal feedback" in face-to-face oral communication. ABSTRACT

Abstract: Design exploration research refers to various interaction design research practices that explore tensions issued from the interplay of science, technology, culture and society. Most of them explicitly trigger discussions and debates in the audience, for instance “critical design”, which raised the interest of members of design research communities. However its generalization suffers from a lack of shareable methodology. This paper aims at clarifying it practically and theoretically.
We claim that these practices trigger people’s reactions using a specific narrative strategy which provoke an “uncanny feeling”. By producing “uncanny enough” artefacts that embed a subtle entanglement of familiarity and unfamiliarity, designers can elicit responses from viewers. First, a review of literature on critical design texts presents the “uncanny balance” as being a recurrent design principle for the creation of these artefacts. We then present an exemplary case study produced by one of the authors, exploring communication technology—called Dog&Bone. Using classical rhetoric, we present a theoretical overview of the project. The outcome consists of a conceptual framework based on the narrative dimension of the uncanny plus the rhetorical dimension (composed of three elements: legitimacy, emotions, argumentation). We conclude that Design is a form of communication between designers and their audience.

Resumen: Raphael ha sido y es uno de los cantantes más destacados de la historia de España. Es conocido mundialmente por la temática de sus canciones (el amor y el desamor), por su timbre de voz y por su singular manera de interpretar. Sobre esta última característica se centra este estudio: su comunicación no verbal. Perseguimos el objetivo de averiguar qué elementos hacen peculiar su manera de interpretar en los escenarios y dilucidar cómo esto ha ayudado a su conexión con el público a lo largo de su carrera tan dilatada. La metodología seguida es la observación de actuaciones en directo y el análisis de los elementos pertinentes para una definición estilística, así como la realización de una entrevista en profundidad al cantante. Además, hacemos una adaptación de los tres pilares de la retórica aristotélica de la comunicación y un amplio análisis de los componentes y patrones de la comunicación no verbal que propone Miles Patterson. Dada la inexistencia de estudios analíticos previos, presentamos una visión global que permitió detectar un «manierismo raphaelista» y un perenne intento de conexión con el público, claves del éxito del cantante a lo largo del tiempo, pese a las dificultades actuales de la industria discográfica. [Note] The Pragmatics of Raphael's Nonverbal Communication Summary: Raphael has been, and is, one of the most outstanding singers in the history of Spain. He is known worldwide for the themes of his songs (love and heartbreak), for his voice and for his unique way of interpreting. This study focuses on this last feature: in his nonverbal communication. We pursue the goal of finding out which elements make his way of interpreting on the stage so peculiar and explain how this has helped his connection with the public throughout his long career. The methodology followed is the observation of live performances and the analysis of the relevant elements which can be extracted for a stylistic definition, as well as the realization of an in-depth interview with the singer. In addition, we make an adaptation of the three pillars of the Aristotelian rhetoric of communication and a broad analysis of the components and patterns of nonverbal communication proposed by Miles Patterson. Given the lack of previous analytical studies, we present a global vision that allowed to detect a " Raphaelist mannerism " and a perennial attempt to connect with the public, keys to the success of the singer over time, despite the current difficulties of the record industry.

Les relations humaines s’intensifient en ce siècle de globalisation et d’échanges mondiaux. En Méditerranée, comme dans le reste de la planète, les éventuelles incompréhensions linguistiques et culturelles se comblent lentement et œuvrent, à leur rythme, à un rapprochement des peuples. La problématique constante de progresser vers une compréhension de l’Alter mérite donc certainement de poser son regard sur une des spécificités de la communication afin de progresser dans le dialogue interculturel. A l’instar de l’étude qui démontre qu’un message transmis par un geste est seulement compris par l’interlocuteur qui en possède le code, les résultats de l’observation prouve le rôle de la communication non verbale et l’intérêt de mieux maîtriser son approche pour un dialogue interculturel plus riche. Ce processus de mise en sens sert notamment à appréhender la complexité des codes multi-culturels pour éviter les sources de ‘mal-entendus’ et ainsi optimiser une volonté d’entendement mutuel au sein de l’espace transméditerranéen.

Nessun momento storico è stato così fortemente dipendente dalla comunicazione come il nostro. Molte professioni, anche nuove, sono coinvolte direttamente in questo processo o si basano su abilità comunicative (il docente, l’avvocato, il magistrato, il politico, il medico, il giornalista, il pubblicitario, l’autore, per citarne alcune), in molte altre saper comunicare efficacemente garantisce opportunità maggiori a supporto della propria professionalità (il manager, il bancario, l’architetto, l’imprenditore, il funzionario della PA, l’artista, e così via).
Il lettore di questo libro, in un percorso che si snoda per 10 capitoli, si troverà ad approfondire la conoscenza dello strumento che sta alla base della comunicazione, la lingua. Partendo dalle unità (i suoni, le parole, le frasi della lingua) studiate tradizionalmente nell’analisi linguistica, verrà poi portato a comprendere il funzionamento della lingua nella comunicazione e potrà impossessarsi degli strumenti per capire e produrre testi efficaci e per muoversi con scioltezza nell’universo comunicativo. Il percorso include anche una ricca considerazione della comunicazione non verbale (gesti, sguardi, posture). Esercizi e rinvii bibliografici consentono di esercitarsi e di studiare ulteriormente in autonomia.

In communication between people, listening plays an important role. Active listening, which implies giving the full attention to the speaker and showing interest to the communication by using a variety of verbal and nonverbal signs, maintains the communication relations and contributes to mitigating conflicts in different social contexts. Moreover, active listening is the most desirable form of response in the interaction between interlocutors, in activities where communication and comprehension are essential, as is the case with social work. Refletir sobre o ensino de telejornalismo com foco no domínio da linguagem corporal na televisão é o objetivo deste trabalho, que tem como base a experiência docente na disciplina “Técnicas de produção e apresentação em TV”. O artigo apresenta  conceitos da teoria semiótica discursiva que serviram de base para a construção do plano de ensino da disciplina e que sustentam seu argumento principal: o telejornal é um produto discursivo (CAVENAGHI, 2013b) e, portanto, o modo de dizer é tão importante quanto o conteúdo da fala. Assim, o domínio das técnicas de apresentação são fundamentais para acadêmicos que desejam seguir esta carreira ou mesmo para aqueles que desejam compreender os modos de funcionamento do discurso televisivo.

Cet ouvrage propose de comprendre ce qui se joue au moment des interactions communicationnelles en général et en situation de recrutement en particulier. L'ouvrage explore la part du verbal et du nonverbal dans la communication, interroge l'histoire de l'espèce et le rôle de la culture. L'auteur propose ici la présentation de concepts fondamentaux ainsi que leurs applications dans le cadre de l'insertion professionnelle et du développement des organisations.

Non-verbal communication is the study of communication without words. Our actions are the means of communication, subject to interpretation by others. Even the failure to act is a way of communicating. Today when we interact with others, we continuously give and receive wordless signals. All of our nonverbal behaviors—the gestures we make, the way we sit, how fast or how loud we talk, how close we stand, how much eye contact we make—send strong messages. These messages don't stop when you stop speaking either. Even when you're silent, you're still communicating nonverbally. Facial expressions, body movements, eye contact, vocal qualities all help us to communicate without words. These silent messages communicate our feelings during any form of interpersonal communication that we have with our friends, teachers, seniors, subordinates or colleagues. The present paper deals with what is non-verbal communication, its various forms and types, how to interpret them, and also some tips of how to enhance these non-verbal communication.

In this article, I propose that there are fundamental limitations to current scientific mainstream methods of writing about therapeutic processes that in fact hinder our ability to both write about our therapeutic process and to learn from other clinicians’ and researchers’ writings.
In my view, these limitations may partially be compensated for by allowing creative writing, poetry and other forms of art to be the major part of a case study, where the objective measures must be integrated into the subjective frame of writing. Creative writing conveys its truth by acknowledging the intense subjective complexity originating from sensations and emotions accompanying the actual objective memory. Therefore, describing only the client and therapist’s narrative itself or material that is only observable by external senses, heavily compromises the quality of the therapeutic process.

The City of Cali, Colombia, has been renowned internationally, particularly in the last decade, for the attractiveness and energy of its salsa performers. Although it is well known and often emphasised that these dancers come from poor backgrounds, little is mentioned about how much this background implies a level of involvement in gangs. Such involvement includes suffering violence in their daily lives to direct participation in illicit activities, the latter particularly in the case of men. Furthermore, by an ethnographical exploration of their situation in 2010, I found that most of the dance companies correlated to a non-negligible extent with former gangs, in some cases even each one of their male members. What I argue here is that, although this change from gangs to dance companies allowed moving from a damaging form of sustenance to a more legitimate one, the conflict inherent within the gangs is still present in salsa dance, only in a more ritualised way. Hence, I present how this conflict appears in performances and, particularly, competitions in the form of an aggressive body language that – curiously in the context of dance – is often perceived by the audience as ‘energetic’ rather than ‘violent’. I propose that this aggressive masculinity of bodies in both gang and dance performance is a negotiation of tensions through  the expectations and expressions of male demeanour. Overview: The aim of this course is to provide a general introduction to a range of theories that seek to explain why we communicate as we do. The first part of the course establishes a general overview of communication theory, from both theoretical and historical points of view. We will examine the relationship between communication, ideology, power, and social consciousness; the development of alphabetic writing; and theories of orality and literacy. We will also review the concept of the self in the context of communication studies. The second part of the course will focus on specific fields within the area of communication, including: the study of popular culture; media analysis; film studies; advertising; and the political economy of communication. We will also examine the rise of technology studies in communication, and consider the way in which the electronic media (in particular computers and the Internet), have refashioned both human consciousness and culture. In this context, we will discuss issues of privacy and democracy in the emerging digital culture; and conclude the course with a brief discussion of global communication.

The paper tries to discuss the universality and cultural relativity of non-verbal communication, ethical issues in its practice, as well as its applicability in the Philippine setting. This paper is written as a reflection to the first episode of Lie to Me Season 1.

Η εργασία αυτή διαπραγματεύεται θέματα επικοινωνίας, διαπροσωπικών σχέσεων και αλληλεπίδρασης μεταξύ των μαθητών σε σχολική τάξη, μέσω μελέτης περίπτωσης. Με την διερεύνηση των διαπροσωπικών σχέσεων που αναπτύσσονται μεταξύ των μαθητών στο σχολείο, μπορούν να διαπιστωθούν τα προβλήματα και οι επιπτώσεις ως προς την ανάπτυξη της προσωπικότητας τους. Μια τέτοια μέθοδος είναι η κοινωνιομετρική, η οποία στηρίζεται στη διαπίστωση των συμπαθειών ή αντιπαθειών που αναπτύσσονται σε μια κοινωνική ομάδα. Είναι ο καλύτερος τρόπος για να συλλάβουμε τα συναισθήματα και τις σχέσεις, ώστε να δώσουμε την ευκαιρία στα ίδια τα άτομα να εκφραστούν ελεύθερα για το θέμα. Πρόκειται για μια μέθοδο από το πεδίο της κοινωνικής ψυχολογίας, η οποία διατίθεται στους εκπαιδευτικούς, και είναι βοηθητική και εύχρηστη.

Although verbal communication is what we say to each other, nonverbal communication makes up 93% of our communication package. Emotions, gestures, body language, space, and time are used extensively through sheer amounts of verbal communication. Furthermore, when we know that it is easy to lie, it is more difficult to show lies; thus, nonverbal communication is more reliable than verbal.
Nonverbal communication is an important and powerful part of communication. It is a large, all-encompassing area, and according to it – the definition of nonverbal is quite broad. Any nonlinguistic variable in nonverbal communication receiver has a stimulating meaning. Any communicative component other than language, stimulating some sort of message in the receiver's mind is part of nonverbal communication.
This research also deals with the meaning, definition, types, functions, components communication and furthermore, detailed information about non-verbal communication as well. This research has been done keeping in mind that every section of society from all over the world can get information by reading it.

Abstract: "Proxemics" is one of the types of non-verbal communication. People perceive space differently, culture and other factors, sex, age, etc. influence this type of nonverbal communication. The article presents the types of proxemics, the latest research in this field, and an overview of the importance of this kind of non-verbal communication in day-to-day communication. Attention has been paid to personal space and its disruption, as well as the impact of population density on the individual and the risks it poses.

From past to today non-verbal communication is always exist. Even a newborn baby can communicate others with body language. We don’t have to learn it, we already know it when we born. Body language is a kind of communication without words. It consist of gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, body posture, head motion. Looking at the body language of a human, we can obtain information about the current situation. There are two sides of statements about body language: it is more effective than verbal language and second statement is no, it is not important as verbal language.

En Gestos españoles el estudiante de español aprende de forma comunicativa a interpretar y usar los principales gestos que hacemos los hispanohablantes como parte de nuestra comunicación habitual, comparándolos con los gestos que hacen en sus propios países. Los contenidos que se trabajan son básicamente de tipo cultural, aunque también se trabajan aspectos gramaticales (tiempos pasados), léxicos (lenguaje coloquial) y funcionales (contar anécdotas), todo acompañado del componente lúdico al que se prestan las actividades programadas. El objetivo principal de la unidad didáctica es que el alumno aprenda el lenguaje gestual español como forma de comunicación no verbal y que esto le ayude a describir y expresar sus sentimientos en la lengua que aprende. Va dirigida a alumnos de un nivel A2-B1 (MCER).

In Gestos españoles a student of Spanish learns to interpret and use the main gestures in a communicatory way that Spanish speakers make as part of our regular communication, while comparing the gestures to the ones in their own countries. The contents are basically cultural type, but also grammatical (past tenses), lexical (colloquial language) and functional (anecdotes), all accompanied by the playful component to which planned activities are provided. The main objective of the teaching unit is for students to learn the language of gestures in Spain as a form of nonverbal communication helping them to describe and express their feelings in a Spanish language learning process. The teaching unit is based on the levels A2-B1 (CEFR).

Este estudio investiga la producción a través del role-play de tres actos de habla en español por parte de tres grupos diferentes de hablantes: nativos de español, nativos de inglés con un nivel avanzado de español, y nativos de inglés con un nivel intermedio de español. Se han tenido en cuenta variables como el nivel de los estudiantes, su experiencia en el extranjero, cuántos años llevaban estudiando la lengua o su propia autopercepción del nivel que tienen. Las transcripciones de los 108 vídeos grabados se han clasificado de acuerdo con los tres actos de habla, los tres grupos, y las estrategias de acción y reacción de cada acto de habla que habían establecido investigaciones anteriores.
Los resultados muestran que los grupos difieren entre sí tanto en la interpretación de cada uno de estos actos de habla como en las estrategias utilizadas para producirlos y reaccionar a ellos, tanto verbal como gestualmente, demostrando así que la competencia pragmática no se ha adquirido al mismo nivel que la competencia gramatical en los estudiantes del grupo avanzado. Se ha podido observar, pues, transferencia negativa tanto en las estrategias utilizadas, como en la extensión y el número de los turnos producidos en los grupos de hablantes no nativos.
Como producto final, además de esta tesis, se ha creado un corpus multimodal al cual tanto investigadores como profesores y alumnos podrán acceder fácilmente a través de internet para poder trabajar con los vídeos y sus transcripciones, las cuales pueden ser descargadas fácilmente.

This BOOK groups together a number of papers published over a period of thirty years. They are put into a logical order, with a progressive introduction of concepts and complexity. The general purpose is demonstrate, by the analysis of existing cases (chosen in Japan, France, Syria, Arabia), the pertinence of the semiotics approach for architectural studies. More specifically, it is the discursive approach of semiotics, built upon syntactic transformations, that is promoted. The analyses demonstrate the cultural investment of semantic values into empty portions of space, orientation, geometric patterns, assembling and cutting operations.

Although codes have been readily scrutinized in their literary and visual contexts standing on their own, it is worth examining the recent reappearance of the image as text. As was vital to language systems such as hieroglyphs, as well as in the import of images upon the written word in emblematic literature of the Renaissance, images have become the means by which emotions are conveyed in otherwise sparse text messages and social media posts. In comparing the modern usage of emoji – sometimes referred to as “smiley faces” in contemporary communication systems to Saussure’s conceptions of “langue” and “parole,” the quotidian system of signification of emoji will be considered as a new system of language in the advent of the technology age.

Only with team spirit, we can achieve something higher. We seem to know how to listen, as we believe that listening is an automatic response to blare. We do it without thinking. This is the reason why so many of us are poor listeners. In this paper, I have explored the importance of listening, the kinds of listening required in the workplace, and how to become a playmaker. In addition, the paper deals with role of effective teams, connection between listening skill and teamwork, how to listen properly, listening at workplace, and approaches to effective listening.  Although many of the tips for improving our listening skills will be effective in our professional and personal life, my analysis is mainly about workplace and employment needs, and this will expedite teamwork by minimizing conflicts in any organization.

Gaydar is the ability to identify homosexual through intuition or observations. This study investigated the different bases used by gay students of Polytechnic University of the Philippines in identifying individuals who have the same sexual orientation as theirs. The researchers conducted a social experiment wherein the gay respondents observed and listened to 4 straight men and a gay man. The respondents were instructed to use their gaydar and identify the gay among the observed individuals. The results showed that gays can accurately distinguish someone as gay based on how he talks and expresses himself with a certain intonation and pitch. In conclusion, verbal communication affects gaydar more than physical and facial features

Ordered in progressive complexity, eight papers are assembled to make this volume entitled Sémiotiser l'espace, continuing a scientific project begun in a former volume entitled Lire l'espace, comprendre l'architecture. These two books aim to deploy concrete semiotic analyses of various places, chosen for their interest and/or their complexity, accompanied by methodological an epistemological discussions of the main issues encountered in the process of recognition-identification-construction of meaning embedded in real world spaces. In the first volume, case studies take the reader to sixteenth century Japan & Italy, andalucian gardens, Le Corbusier's convent in La Tourette, Bel's sanctuary in Palmyra (Syria), Makka's sanctuary in Arabia, and Ampère's modeling of electromagnetism. This second volume returns to japanese houses for their semantic structure, to Palmyra for an analysis of city space and time structure, to Roma where antique sculptures are presented in an electric plant, and to the University of Vilnius (Lituania) for a combined analysis of drawings and buildings. The variety of places and functions prove the general character of the semiotic approach developped. The novelty of the results prove its efficiency.

Student's relationship with teachers is important because students spend about 7 to 9 hours a day and almost 11 months with the teacher. This paper focuses on ascertaining the impact of communication between teachers and students. Communication is a motivational tool for students to accomplish their studies. In this era, education is spreading very quickly all around the world. Universities are trying to improve their standard by increasing the quality of education as well as the quality of their students. This study examines the challenges which create barriers and huddles due to communication between the teachers and students to ensure that the students succeed. For this purpose, the faculty of management science, University of Karachi, Pakistan, was used as a case study. Its impact on students through the teacher's communication was examined. Three (3) departments are working under the faculty of management science. The random sampling method was used to gather the data from the departments. Descriptive analysis of mean and percentage were applied to find the impact of teacher's communication on the student's education and their success. The results show a positive relation between them. It is very difficult to create a positive relation between teachers and students when they get to a certain stage. This is because they are both mature, although it is necessary for both students and teachers. The qualities for a positive relationship can vary to make learning experience approachable and inviting for the students. If the teacher and the students have good communication skills and understand the importance of the impact of their communication, establishing a good relationship will be much easier.
