According to Victor Burgin, a portrait is not a simple depiction of a particular person, but rather a heterogeneous representation, which is understood as a complex semiotic construct, built on the basis of the plurality of codes. The proposed paper discusses American and European photographs representing the genre of the medical professional, which, in 19th and early 20th centuries were used by medical professionals to both convey the seriousness of medical studies and to assume professional identity. 
While the medical world long struggled to combat the negative depiction of the profession, which was already deeply ingrained in popular perception during the 18th and 19th centuries through professional publications that aimed to identify and isolate imposters in the medical field, only the creation of the medical occupational portrait genre provided medics with a more accessible and efficient visual tool in their efforts to uphold their reputation.
In the first section, the article examines photographs created between the1840s and 1900s, belonging to the formal professional portraiture genre. These photographs, usually taken at the photographic studio, depict doctors posing with books and charts, but also with skulls and skeletal parts, which puts them in striking contrast with modern medical professional portraits. The author demonstrates how, through the conventional displaying of cranium and other skeletal parts, early photographic medical portraiture both linked the images of medics to the painterly tradition of the professional portraiture and established the notion of modern medicine as a bold attempt to defeat death.
The second part of the article concentrates on photographs of dissections, including formal lecture photographs and candid images of small groups of students taken either by professional photographers or by the students themselves. Most of these pictures are dated between the 1880s and 1920s. The paper analyzes such aspects of dissection photographs as their composition, which establishes the students’ relationship with the cadaver, a variety of written information included in pictures, and the circulation these images. In addition, the paper discusses examples of photographic medical “gallows humor” in the context of changing attitudes towards human remains.

Testimony based on different portraits of Abd el-Kader in Oriental clothes
How can the requirement of historical criticism stand against the ideological pressure caused by the making of a national memory? This issue, analyzed in several articles on the construction of the image of Abd el-Kader in contemporary Algeria, ends here with sources dealing with the Emir’s period of exile to the East. Did the leader abandon his Algerian costume to embrace the regional dress codes? This question led Algerian historians to challenge the testimonies of visitors and even photographs. In the course of analyzing a seemingly irrelevant detail - the eye color of the Emir - we noted that the information was not only different but contradictory: based on incomplete, disparate and sometimes controversial documentation, how can one not give into relativism and still manage to provide the evidence?

The study of paper in relation to photography has been addressed until now considering the technical aspects of the conservation and restoration of these materials as photographie support. ln this article we propose a different, more historicist point of view, offering some brushstrokes on the types of paper that were used during the beginnings of photography, describing the main factories, brands and types of paper, and also the different roles played by the paper in its association With photography. We will study the paper as primary, secondary and tertiary support of photography, as well as the different formats in paper and cardboard used in this medium during its first decades of existence.

Gustave Roquerbe (Alexandrie 1849 - Paris 1910), sous-directeur de la Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas, est un photographe amateur connu principalement pour des photos de paysages publiées autour de 1900. Une partie de sa collection de plaques de verre a été donnée à la Bibliothèque nationale de France. Cette collection se compose de 317 plaques datées de 1886 à 1911, prises à l'occasion de vacances en Ardèche, dans le Jura, la Manche, la Côte d'Azur et les Pyrénées; prises le week-end dans les parcs et rues de Paris, ainsi que des vues de Madrid et de l'exposition universelle de Paris 1901.

This contribution arose out of the idea of providing a collection of photographs of the chess players who were active in Sicily from 1500 to 1979 to both non-specialist enthusiasts as well as to scholars specializing in the history of chess.
The collection of 300 photographs contains three different series: Portraits of Chess players, Simultaneous exhibitions and tournaments, A romantic game of chess.
The key parameter that I adopted is definided by documented chess activities in Sicily, regardless of birhplace of the chess player. This criterion exsplains the inclusion in the index of Sicilian chess players, of players who are Italian but not Sicilian, as well as foreigners who reside, either for a limited period of time or permanently, in Sicily.
Each entry of Portraits of Chess players schematically presents the following data: 1. family name and first name;          2. place and date of birth and death; 3. location of chess activity and chronology; 4. brief description of the chess player: table or correspondence player, problemist, Problem and Study solver, contributor to chess journals, columnist, positions held in local chess circle, membership in the Italian Chess Union (USI) or in Italian Chess Federation (FSI) or in Italian Correspondence Chess Association (ASIGC); 5. photographs.
Entries associated an extensive bibliography have been kept to a minimum and only present information that refers to a detaidel bibliography already cited in previous publications, along with newly appearing bibliographic items to complete the record.
This reference work could be extended in the future.
I hope that initiatives of this type can also be extended to other cities or regions of Italy for the progress of scientific studies dedicated to our national chess history.

Album zawierający nieznane fotografie Warszawy z lat 1939 – 1945. Zdjęcia pochodzą z rodzinnych archiwów, co zwiększa ich atrakcyjność.  Zdjęcia podzielone zostały na 3 okresy: okupację, okres Powstania i czas po Powstaniu. Celem publikacji było - oprócz ukazania wydarzeń historycznych - pokazanie także wymiaru prywatnego, osobistego. Wcześniej fotografie nie były opublikowane. Ukazują m.in. chwile odpoczynku walczących. Zdjęcia przedstawiają przede wszystkim prywatne historie, gdzie gruzy i ruiny są sprowadzone jedynie do roli tła. Fotografie uzupełniają teksty napisane w oparciu o relacje powstańców i ludności cywilnej, nierzadko autorów zdjęć lub osób na nich uwiecznionych.
