Przedmiotem rozważań jest sześć kazań pogrzebowych z lat dwudziestych i trzydziestych XVII wieku jezuity Jakuba Olszewskiego upamiętniających Samuela Paca, Annę Sapieżankę Radziwiłłową, biskupa Eustachego Wołłowicza, ks. Jana Karola Białłozora, Krzysztofa Mikołaja Sapiehę oraz Gryzeldę Wodyńską Sapieżynę. Kaznodzieja żegnał osoby obu płci, w różnym wieku, duchowne i świeckie. Celem studium jest ukazanie, w jaki sposób i na ile kaznodzieja włącza biografię zmarłego w koncepcję kazania pogrzebowego, ustalenie tego, w jakim stopniu interesuje go autentyczny życiorys, a na ile postawa oraz – szczególnie – realizacja zamysłu moralistycznego. Na ile Olszewski korzysta ze schematu pochwały opracowanego przez Kwintyliana, a na ile czerpie z modelu znanego z hagiografii. Chwaląc zmarłych, Olszewski odwołuje się do symboliki heraldycznej, wykorzystuje też miejsca (loci) podane przez Kwintyliana. Za istotne uznaje kaznodzieja także przywołanie świadectw heroicznej wiary, które czerpie od spowiedników zmarłych. Kreując wzorce osobowe, dąży do osiągnięcia celu parenetycznego. W praktyce kaznodzieja podaje informacje mówiące o: genealogii, indywidualnych doświadczeniach życiowych (a w przypadku mężczyzn o ich działalności publicznej), praktycznej pobożności, cnotach moralnych, jałmużnie, działalności fundatorskiej i pobożnej śmierci. Kaznodzieja więc nie stawia sobie za cel przedstawienia biografii osoby zmarłej, lecz nakreślenie wzorców osobowych reprezentatywnych dla modeli, jakie podsuwa dola zmarłego. Mówca uczy słuchaczy sztuki dobrego życia, ukazuje godne naśladowania postawy. Olszewski łączy schemat podany przez Kwintyliana z elementami schematu znanego z hagiografii. Ukazuje model świętości dostępny dla każdego. Jego biografie mają zatem profil laudacyjno-parenetyczny.

Recovered Text of “Maszkary mięsopustne i powszechne, przy tym Kłoda popielcowa z Parnasu” (“Shrove Tuesday Masks and Common Masks, and also Ash Wednesday Wood Log from Parnassus”) by Stanisław Serafin Jagodyński
The paper contains a critical edition of "Maszkary mięsopustne i powszechne, przy tym Kłoda popielcowa z Parnasu" ("Shrove Tuesday Masks and Common Masks, and also Ash Wednesday Wood Log from Parnassus") by Stanisław Serafin Jagodyński, text of which has been considered irretrievably lost until now. In fact, unique print disappeared even before World War II, however, its faithful copy survived in Karol Badecki’s manuscript stored in the Jagiellonian Library (Ms 7777 III, pp. 310–318). The published text is accompanied by a literary historical and linguistic commentary.

Artykuł stanowi polemikę z dotychczasowymi interpretacjami utworu: nie jest ono (tylko) poetycką zabawą, ale też próbą wykazania „niemożliwości metafory”. Wyobrażenia, które są elementami metafory posiadają strukturę farmakonu: każde z nich jest nieredukowalną dwoi-stością, która obok zamierzonego przynosi również znaczenie niechciane i sprzeczne z zamie-rzonym. Naborowski chce wyjść z impasu poprzez ustalenie „super-metafory”: oczy nie są żadnym z przywoływanych bytów z osobna, ale wszystkimi jednocześnie. To jednak niczego nie zmienia: zsumowanie wszystkich wyobrażeń nie redukuje ich ambiwalentnej natury, nie przynosi zalecanej przez poetyki konceptystyczne „niezgodnej zgodności”, lecz „niezgodną niezgodność”.

Wydrukowaną w 1637 komedię "Z chłopa król" należy powiązać ze zjawiskiem karnawału i w kontekście mięsopustu interpretować jej przesłanie. Dydaktyce chrześcijańskiej podporządkowano mityczne, osadzone w schemacie trzech funkcji indoeuropejskich (w ujęciu Georgesa Dumézila) przejście bohatera trzeciej funkcji w boga-bohatera funkcji pierwszej za sprawą aktu objęcia władzy przez 'oracza'. W sztuce wyrażającej ideologię chrześcijańską swoich czasów są zawarte pokłady pogańskie czy indoeuropejskie.

Artykuł poświęcony został literackiej zagadce Jana Kochanowskiego (Fraszki III 78) z XVI w. o zwierzęciu z jednym okiem, do którego strzela się pozba-wionymi grotu strzałami. Jej rozwiązanie do dziś sprawia bowiem badaczom egzegetom problem. Autor polemizuje z dotychczasowymi propozycjami odpowiedzi (broń palna, anus homoseksualisty, anus niewieści, przenośny wychodek), zaczynając swój wywód od szczegółowej analizy leksykalnej epigramatu. Omówiwszy poetykę staropolskiej dwuznacznej zagadki obsce-nicznej (sugerującej skojarzenia nieprzyzwoite, by podsunąć niewinne roz-wiązanie), a także podstawowe różnice postrzegania niewieściego ciała w XVI stuleciu i dziś, autor wykazał, że dawni czytelnicy zagadki Ko-chanowskiego uznawali, iż jej rozwiązaniem była kobieca wagina. To try-wialne rozwiązanie również i dziś wydaje się najbardziej prawdopodobną odpowiedzią. The paper focuses on the literary riddle written in the 16 th century by Jan Kochanowski (Fraszki III 78), concerning an animal with one eye that is shot at with arrows without arrowheads. The answer to the riddle is still debated by exegetic researchers. The author discusses the answers proposed so far (firearm, a homosexual's anus, a female anus, an outhouse), starting with detailed lexical analysis of the epigram. Having discussed the poetics of the Old Polish ambiguous ribald riddle (suggesting indecent associations, but leading to an innocent answer) and the differences in the perception of the female body in the 16 th century and today, the author shows that the audience of the riddle in the times of Kochanowski reached the conclusion that the answer was a female vagina. This trivial solution still seems to be the most probable answer.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie sposobów tworzenia harmonii ewangelicznych w Historyi o chwalebnym…, a także ich relacji z treścią scen dramatycznych.
Artykuł skupił się m.in. na kwestii wyboru spośród wersji ewangelicznych, a  także wyboru spośród czterech polskich redakcji, na technice łączeń i na świadomości, skąd pochodzi dany cytat i gdzie jest jego granica. Okazało się, że czytania ewangeliczne są w pewien sposób niezależne od akcji – czy raczej – akcja niezależna od czytań. Mimo iż autor tworzył harmonię na poziomie czytań, łącząc różne wersje ewangelistów, to jednak w akcji za nimi nie podążał.

Anton Wierix’s cycle of 18 copperplates entitled Cor Iesu amanti sacrum, up to recently unknown to literary historians, has inspired two lately issued poetic cycles from 17th century (see M. Mieleszko, Emblematy [Emblems], ed. by R. Grześkowiak, J. Niedźwiedź. Warszawa 2010). The article delivers pieces of information on a third such piece preserved in two editions written by the same hand and embellished with the same set of prints (copies of which are by Michael Snijders). The first edition is known from the manuscript of the Order of Saint Clare in Stary Sącz, while the second one from the Norbertines monastery of Imbramowice. The anonymous work devoid of its title is a meditative book for nuns. Each of its 16 chapters consists of a title, a print, a translation of its Latin inscription, a biblical quote, a longer poetic text placed below, and a meditation in prose. Apart from basic pieces of information about handwritten sources, the article offers a critical edition of foreword and two chapters (4 and 5) as a comparative analysis of the two editions.

Much information about, and even the canon of Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński’s works (? – 1580) still remain probable but not fully ascertained. The little book published twenty years after his death, Rytmy, a single copy of which survives – it was found accidentally in the early 1800s – represents his uncertain legacy. Yet not only Sęp is the greatest pre-modern Polish poet after Kochanowski, but, due to his sonnets and other compositions of his early maturity, he can be considered the creator of a new style that, under the influence of late Italian Petrarchism, brings Polish poetry closer to mannerism and, for some commentators, to baroque. This essay focuses in particular on sonnet 3, "To the Most Holy Virgin ". While revealing many connections with Dante and Petrarca, it takes on themes and styles of the Spanish Marian literature that was almost contemporary with the young author. This poem constitutes the cornerstone of a sonnet cycle (the first in Polish literature) that marks the artistic culmination of a “passage” to modernity, in which an attitude of doubt and the attendant "grammar of uncertainty" (J. Błoński) become the writer’s main stylistic and existential signature.

The theoretical writings of Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski have provided a constant focal point of scholarly interest, most often in the context of the study of problems relating to poetry’s concepts and aesthetics, the Christianization of antiquity, or the imitation of Horace. The multifaceted thought of this author, who belonged to a transitional intellectual formation in the history of European thought, can and should nonetheless likewise inspire studies in terms of the history of ideas, which place the object of knowledge at the intersection of artificially
separated areas of knowledge. Sarbiewski’s treatise De acuto et arguto, devoted to his conceptist structure of the epigram, represents not only an enunciation of baroque literary theory, but also, read in dialogue with his other writings, reveals a consistent cosmological vision of reality.

The article presents old (created before 1795) publications (histories and legends of holy places, guide books of shrines, catalogues of miracles and graces, sermons, prayer books) connected thematically with Marian shrines located in the former diocese of Przemyśl in its historical, i.e. pre-partition borders. There have been 45 centres of the cult of Virgin Mary identified within its territory, including two of transregional scope – in Leżajsk and in Jarosław. Around 60 texts are directly connected with those centres, constituting a valuable source of material for the study of sacral topography of the former area and diocese of Przemyśl and religiousness of its inhabitants.

My thesis focuses on the interconnection between the phenomenon of the classical reception—that is the reception of the classical Greek–Roman antiquity and its legacy—and representation of the King (royal imagology) in early modern Polish Kingdom in the sixteenth century. For the analysis of these concepts, my study examines the figure of Sigismund II Augustus Jagiellon (1520–1572), the last Jagiellonian King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania and the first King of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. His reign was marked by dissemination of the classical images and figures in literature and art.
My research stresses the hypothesis that the classical images and symbols were regularly used in shaping and promotion the image of Sigismund Augustus. In particular, these classical symbols deriving from the antiquity strengthened the image of the royal authority in complicated circumstances, such as confrontation with the nobility, reformist Executionist movement, and preparation of the Polish–Lithuanian Union. Promotion of the royal image was made in several ways: via direct visual and textual propaganda and through connotations and context that arose simultaneously. My thesis argues that Sigismund Augustus was regularly compared with or instructed based on the prominent examples of the classical antiquity—Cyrus, Alexander the Great, Octavianus—and this contributed to strengthening of his political positions in early modern Poland. Methodology applied in my research includes art historical and historical methods, literature analysis, involves comparative analysis and broader European context, analysing early modern Central-Eastern Europe as an integral element of Renaissance European politics and culture.

The article discusses the role of vermin in the vanitas discourse in the Polish poetry from the late 16th until the 18th centuries. The introduction, using the example of Żale nagrobne by Sebas-tian Fabian Klonowic, shows the change in the manner of discussing death, which came about soon after the death of Jan Kochanowski, making it possible to return to the medieval visions of decomposition , enriched by that poet by a broad range of hideous things, symbols of vanity. The second part of the paper discusses Baroque paintings of worms eating away the corpse based on selected works, and presents major poetic devices which are meant to convey the vanitas message. There are descriptions of metaphysical nature and ones showing the nothingness of existence in a purely earthly dimension. The paper closes with remarks on exhausting the vanitas discourse using the worms imagery, the example of which are poems using the coffin hideousness in an erotic context.
