Emblematic

En heráldica existe una amplio repertorio de figuras propias que pueden representarse si bien, a diferencia de la gran variedad de estilos con que los pintores y dibujantes pueden reproducir o colorear una cierta figura,  los heraldistas han de constreñirse a unas estrictas reglas de diseño, color y ubicación de las figuras dentro del campo del escudo.  En principio pueden establecerse dos grandes categorías: a) Las Piezas, que se dibujan como formas geométricas y b) Los Seantes, o pequeñas figuras geométricas.En nuestro estudio nos reefriremos a aquellas formadas por dibujos de rayas paralelas combinadas de diversas formas, que aparecen trazadas dentro del campo del escudo, unas veces solas y otras repetidas, constituyendo una característica esencial de la heráldica europea. Se denominan comúnmente como Piezas Honorables y se caracterizan por ser privativas de la heráldica y dibujarse de acuerdo con unas estrictas reglas de diseño, dimensión y color. Es decir se trata de unas figuras que no existen si no en función de la heráldica que las ha creado y dado contenido

Jezsuita szentek emblematikus életrajzai a 17-18. században Az elmúlt két évtizedben jelentősen fellendült a jezsuita emblematika kutatása. 1 A bibliográfiai és klasszifikációs kísérletekkel párhuzamosan mű-és motívumelemzé sek, szerzői monográfiák, forrás-és hatástörténeti vizsgálatok készültek. Világossá vált, hogy a jezsuita anyag megkerülhetetlen az emblematika és a különféle iro dalmi, képzőművészeti műfajok kapcsolatának tisztázásában. Megindult az emble-matikára vonatkozó jezsuita elméletek feltárása, terv született az emblémakönyvek számítógépes feldogozására és kézikönyvben való közzétételére, s jelentősen előre haladt a jezsuita emblematika sajátos vonásainak meghatározása. E munkák során bebizonyosodott az is, hogy a felvetett kérdések tisztázása csak részleteiben, egyes szerzőkre, művekre és kiadványtípusokra lebontva remélhető, ugyanakkor óvakod ni kell az ezekből levont következtetések túlzott általánosításától. A jezsuita emblematika egyik jól körülhatárolható területét alkotják a jezsuita szentek és szentéletűnek tartott jezsuiták életéhez, csodáihoz és erényeihez kap csolódó nyomtatott emblémasorozatok. A didaktikus használati irodalomnak erre a speciális műfajára már Praz is felfigyelt, amikor óvott a szentek életének illuszt rált jeleneteit néhány soros magyarázattal tartalmazó kiadványok önkényes beso rolásától az emblémakönyvek közé. 2 Időközben világossá vált, hogy az illusztrált szentéletrajzok hagyományos műfaja mellett a 17. század első két évtizedétől a je zsuita kanonizációs törekvésekkel párhuzamosan növekvő számban jelentek meg a jezsuita szentekről és szentté avatandókról készített emblémasorozatok, amelyek tekintélyes részét teszik ki a heroikus, azon belül a kiemelkedő egyéniségekhez kö tődő emblematikus nyomtatványoknak. RESUMEN
En el aÑo 1998, y a instancias del entonces Alcalde-Presidente del Ayuntamiento de Mancha Real, don Pedro Cuevas Raya, me fue encomendada la tarea de elaborar el proyecto para la tramitación del expediente sobre aprobación del escudo, bandera y lema de la citada población, conforme a lo dispuesto por la Junta de Andalucía en el Decreto 14/1995, de 31 de enero (B.O.J.A. núm.38, de 9 de marzo de 1995), que regula la creación, adopción o modificación de las enseñas locales.
Finalizada la memoria histórico-heráldica-vexilológica justificativa del escudo y bandera de la población, la corporación local aprobó íntegramente su contenido por acuerdo de la mayoría de los representantes, en sesión celebrada el 10 de noviembre de 1998.
Tras la tramitación preceptiva ante la Consejería de Gobernación de la Junta de Andalucía, ésta solicitó informe técnico sobre el expediente de referencia a la Real Academia de Córdoba de Ciencias, Bellas Letras y Nobles Artes, que emitió el correspondiente dictamen el 18 de marzo de 1999, firmado por don Alfonso Porras de la Fuente, informe en el que se solicitaba se aclarasen ciertos aspectos relativos al lema y divisa del escudo-proyecto.
Con posterioridad, el Ayuntamiento en pleno, ratificó el proyecto inicial en sesión plenaria el 11 de mayo de 1999 con las correspondientes alegaciones.
En su vista, la Consejería de Gobernación y Justicia de la Junta de Andalucía, tras el estudio de los distintos pareceres, estimó aprobar el escudo y la bandera de Mancha Real según el proyecto inicial por Decreto 15/2000, de 24 de enero, publicado en el B.O.J.A núm.22, de 22 de febrero de 2000, con lo que tras este procedimiento administrativo, el Ayuntamiento de Mancha Real ha visto oficializadas las seas identificativas del municipio.
En el presente trabajo, damos a conocer en su integridad la memoria histórica, heráldica y vexilológica presentada en su día ante el organismo competente de la Junta de Andalucía, aprobada, recientemente, de forma oficial.

Anton Wierix’s cycle of 18 copperplates entitled Cor Iesu amanti sacrum, up to recently unknown to literary historians, has inspired two lately issued poetic cycles from 17th century (see M. Mieleszko, Emblematy [Emblems], ed. by R. Grześkowiak, J. Niedźwiedź. Warszawa 2010). The article delivers pieces of information on a third such piece preserved in two editions written by the same hand and embellished with the same set of prints (copies of which are by Michael Snijders). The first edition is known from the manuscript of the Order of Saint Clare in Stary Sącz, while the second one from the Norbertines monastery of Imbramowice. The anonymous work devoid of its title is a meditative book for nuns. Each of its 16 chapters consists of a title, a print, a translation of its Latin inscription, a biblical quote, a longer poetic text placed below, and a meditation in prose. Apart from basic pieces of information about handwritten sources, the article offers a critical edition of foreword and two chapters (4 and 5) as a comparative analysis of the two editions.

Ján Szilassy (1704 – 1782) from Levoča is considered to be the most famous and most productive baroque goldsmith and enameller of Upper Hungary. Regarding the importance and number of his high quality preserved works, he was shown a  great interest from the researchers. In spite of that, an important aspect of his work remains omitted: the emblems applied on enamel medallions, which are a characteristic part of his rich gold production. The emblems that he often used, such as Latent res eximiae (Hidden is special), Non confractus non divisus (Unbroken and undivided) and Ut vit habeant (So that they may have life), can be found in the extended emblematic compendium of Symbolographia, sive de arte symbolica sermones septem (Augsburg and Dillingen, 1701) by the Jesuit Jakob Bosch (1652 – 1704). The unique emblem is the one depicting a man at the body of a dead lion, with bees flying out of its jaws. Its inscription, on the chalice from 1762 found in the eastern Slovak village of Kluknava, reads De forti dulcedo (Out of the strong came forth sweetness). The source for this emblem can be found in another significant book that is important for understanding the visual culture of the 17th and 18th centuries, in the Mundus Symbolicus (Cologne, 1681) written by Filippo Picinelli (1604 – 1667). The books help to explain the individual emblems and their link to the liturgical function of the goldsmith works. The applied emblems symbolically reminded and communicated the faith and dogma of the assembled Catholic Church community at the regular celebration of the Eucharist.

Kniha Zuzany Dzurňákovej s názvom Úvod do novodobej emblematiky a príklady aplikovaných emblémov v Trnave sa venuje, v slovenskej umenovede, pomerne okrajovej tematike, a to emblémom, ktoré sú špecifickou umeleckou formou, nakoľko sa ich forma skladá z textovej a obrazovej časti. Sú dôležitým ikonografickým a ikonologickým prameňom, zvlášť potrebným pre poznanie dobovej barokovej kultúry. Autorka sa zameriava na pre ňu známe prostredie mesta Trnavy, kde nachádzame pomerne značné zastúpenie príkladov aplikovaných emblémov, čo viac-menej súviselo s faktom existencie historickej Trnavskej univerzity a jej tlačiarne, vďaka čomu boli prítomné aj knihy emblémov, slúžiace pre ich následnú aplikáciu na freskách a obrazoch. Práve tie sa pokúsila autorka analyzovať a interpretovať  v širšom výtvarnom a kultúrno-historickom kontexte  a poukázať na ich výnimočné postavenie v dejinách barokového umenia.

RESUMEN Dos familias hidalgas procedentes del Norte peninsular, los Biedma y los Benavides, están en el origen de la fundación de varias casas nobiliarias que recibirán incontables títulos y mercedes reales a lo largo de los siglos. Concentrarán tras su unión, un inmenso patrimonio andaluz, llegando con el tiempo a detentar la Grandeza de España y a emparentar con las más altas dignidades ducales españolas, parte de cuyo legado material e inmaterial ha llegado hasta nuestros días. Con esta aportación, pretendemos establecer la genealogía de una de las ramas de la Casa de Benavides, concretamente la que desciende en favor de los señores y posteriores Marqueses de Jabalquinto; para posteriormente realizar un exhaustivo análisis de las labras armeras que presentan los patrocinadores de este linaje en el palacio de Jabalquinto en Baeza, cuya realización artística, condiciona su lectura desde el punto de vista de la heráldica andaluza en particular, al apartarse sustancialmente de los tradicionales modelos de ejecución armera en la fecha.

A partir du milieu du XIIIe siècle, l'art occidental est saturé d'images héraldiques au point d'être marqué, à la fin du Moyen Âge, par une véritable "héraldisation" - l'application des principes chromatiques et graphiques du Blason - des grands courants stylistiques. Et pourtant l'intérêt des historiens de l'art pour le sujet est très récent. Il s'est souvent focalisé sur des questions d'identification et de datation sans se pencher plus avant sur les questions proprement artistiques ou esthétiques. Qu'est-ce qui caractérise une image héraldique, à l'origine du système et au fur et à mesure de ses évolutions ? La représentation héraldique est-elle une œuvre d'art ? Qui sont les auteurs de ces milliers d'images qui nous ont été conservées ? S'agit-il d'artistes, d'artisans spécialisés ? Quelles sont finalement les conditions nécessaires à la réalisation d'une "bonne" image héraldique au Moyen Âge ?

Il testo raccoglie le schede di stemmi laici e religiosi, blasonati e accompagnati da un ricco apparato di note, e da illustrazioni a colori.

The book contains about 150 coats-of-arms present in Santa Severina (Crotone), eminent location in the former Kingdom of Naples, ancient archbishopric and (from the Renaissance) fief of important families who held it also with the title of prince. The text collects boards coats-of-arms both lay and religious, emblazoned and accompanied by a rich array of notes, and color illustrations.

En el año 2000, me fue encomendada la tarea de elaborar el expediente del escudo y bandera de Benalmádena, conforme a lo dispuesto por la Junta de Andalucía en el Decreto 14 / 1995, de 31 de enero (B O.J A. núm. 38, de 9 de marzo de 1995), expediente que la corporación local aprobó por acuerdo mayoritario, en sesión celebrada el 2 5 de mayo de 20 0. Tras la tramitación preceptiva ante la Junta de Andalucía, ésta solicitó informe técnico sobre el expediente de referencia a la Real Academia de Córdoba que emitió dictamen favorable el 14 de diciembre de 2000. En su vista, la Consejería de Gobernación de la Junta de Andalucía, estimó aprobar el escudo y la bandera de Benalmádena según el proyecto inicial por Decreto 18/2001,  publicado en el B.O.J.A núm. 23, de  4 de febrero de 2001.

This paper addresses the symbolism of redoubtable beasts in princely heraldic badges of the late Middle Ages. It consists of three parts: first, a quantitative study of 894 heraldic badges dating from 1370 to 1520 which allows to apprehend the population and evolution of redoubtable beasts occurring in these badges; second, a series of four case-studies, namely Giangaleazzo Visconti’s leopard, Jean de Berry’s bear, Richard III’s boar and Louis XII’s porcupine, in order to shed light on the relationship between a prince and his emblematic animal; third, a study of the animal badges that can be found in the first modern treaty on heraldic badges, namely Paolo Giovio’s Dialogo dell’imprese militari e amorose (Rome: Antonio Barre, 1555), in order to discover the metamorphosis of the medieval heraldic badge into the early modern times.

This is the introduction to the book _Emblems of Death in the Early Modern Period_ that Peter Daly and I co-edited and that came out with Droz in October 2014. This document gives you an idea of the main theme of the book, the perspectives from which the editors and contributors interpreted this theme, and the content of each essay included in the book.

In the years 1712 to 1719 Count Jan Václav Gallas, an important Habsburg diplomat, caused to be built for himself a magnificent palace based on the design of Johann bernhard Fischer of erlach. An engraving of the structure by J.A. Delsenbach contains an inscription on the central bay of the façade, which reads " Fide. Fati. Virtute. Se-quemur " [We will follow faith to the power of fate]—an inscription that is not found on structure itself. This study retraces the origins, history and the polemics that have developed around this text, as well as an associated horoscope of the emperor Augustus and subsequent imprese. This context also explains why Count Gallas did not finally make use of the inscription on the palace.

The goal of the paper is to present the attribution and codicological analysis of a manuscript currently stored at Biblioteca civica Angelo Mai in Bergamo (sign. MM 378). The paper describes the manuscript codicologically, also hypothesizing as to its presence in the Bergamo library. Based on a manuscript annotation on the codex's upper pastedown, I argue that it was intended as a gift for one of the Załuski family. On the basis of the printed correspondence between Józef Andrzej Załuski and Angelo Maria Querini, it may be assumed that Codex MM 378 was among the parcels containing manuscripts from the circle of Stanisław Hosius that the Italian librarian intended to send to Załuski. The boxes with the codices never reached the Polish librarian due to the tardiness of the messenger, Jacques David Frédéric Perard. It is claimed here that both the inscriptions and images in the code are authored by Tomasz Treter. The manuscript's attribution was based on palaeographic analysis (comparing the handwriting with Treter's epistolography stored in the archives in Kraków and Olsztyn). According to the dates included in the code, the inscriptions were made between 20 June 1569 and 2 March 1575. The manuscript thus represents the earliest known evidence of Treter's artistic activity. The autograph contains some previously unknown emblems by Treter, and a preliminary design of the emblem work "Symbolica vitae Christi meditatio" (published 1612). As many as 51 sketches in the manuscript overlap with the emblematic icons of the 1612 printing, all of which are more symbolic (hieroglyphic) representations of Christian virtues known from Treter's printing, while there are no sketches of icons in the printed book referring to specific biblical scenes. Therefore, there is still uncertainty about the authorship of these compositions, which also differ in the quality of rendition from the previously mentioned ones. Comparing the autograph with the artist's later published work offers insight into his technique. The drawings in the manuscript show very clear inspiration of Claude Paradin, Gabriel Syméon, Aneau Barthélemy and Andrea Alciato, which is not always conspicuous in the printed version. The analysis includes the final note, mentioning imprese with the painter Lorenzo Lotto, which explains correspondences between this artist's work and the emblems from Symbolica vitae Christi meditatio.

A fin de conocer las características y peculiaridades de la heráldica navarra. Se analizan las diferentes piezas y figuras heráldicas de los escudos gentilicios navarros y se compara su presencia en los Armoriales Navarros con la que esas mismas figuras obtienen en la heráldica de los otros territorios hispanos.

Изследването на историческото развитие на емблемата има важно значение за разбирането на нейната същност като явление. Естествено историческото развитие на емблемата представлява процес на изменение под влияние на особеностите на едни или други епохи, моделиране на явлението в зависимост от последователната смяна на социалните условия. Но установяването на историческите "перипетии" на емблемата не е просто отчитане на особеностите на различните епохи в развитието на човечеството и на техния натиск върху природата на изследваното явление. Едно такова изследване ще ни позволи да проследим формирането на потребностите на обществото от появата на емблемата, ще ни даде възможност да обясним наслагването на елементите в структурата на емблемата-такава, каквато е днес, ще ни помогне да разберем логиката на оформянето на нейните социални функции-познавателна, възпитателна, естетическа, идентификационна и т. н. Това е особено важно, като се има предвид противоречивото разнообразие на схващанията за същността на емблемата днес.

Giovanni Antonio Bazzi (1477-1549), also known as Il Sodoma, was a Milanese painter who developed his mature style in Siena during the early Cinquecento. Between 1505 and 1510, under the tutelage of the Chigi and Petrucci families, Bazzi depicted mythological paintings focusing on the personifications of love both terrestrial and celestial. This paper looks at two such works. In one, there hangs on a sycamore tree a classical cartello with the Latin inscription Celestes, meaning celestial or heavenly, providing the title for the painting Amore Celeste (Celestial Love, Figure 3). A woman, as the personification of love, stands in front of two altars. She ignites one urn with fire and at the same time pours water over another burning fire. In the second work, a tondo with the theme of Terrestrial Love and Celestial Love, Bazzi considered the mischievousness of Venus‘ children Eros and Anteros (Figure 12). These paintings are mythological and poetical delights with complex symbolism, here analyzed in terms of their iconography in relation to classical influences and Renaissance Neoplatonic love or furor divinus.1 The paradoxical quest of Renaissance Neoplatonic love was to fuse pagan love with Christian love. For the humanists of the time (Bembo, Colonna, Poliziano, Ficino and Pico) this moral dilemma was a philosophical puzzle, but for artists (Botticelli, Nicoletto da Modena, Pinturicchio and Bazzi) the theme was a pictorial challenge.

RESUMEN: Santisteban del Puerto (Jaén), ha conocido a lo largo de su dilatada historia una variedad de muestras tanto sigilares como heráldicas, que han venido a identificar al concejo a lo largo de las distintas centurias, que arrancan en la Baja Edad Media y llegan hasta finales del siglo XIX. Será nuestra intención la de realizar un recorrido cronológico de estas manifestaciones corporativas, analizando su aparición y contenido emblemático para con ello establecer un estudio heráldico de las mismas.
ABSTRACT: Santisteban del Puerto (Jaén), a connu au cours de sa longue histoire une variété de sceaux et de blasons pour identi er le conseil municipal au long des siècles, qui commencent au Moyen Âge et arrivent jusqu'à la fin du XIX ème siècle. Notre intérêt sera de faire un parcours chronologique de ces manifestations corporatives et de réaliser un approfondissement symbolique pour établir une étude héraldique.

Апстракт: У раду је представљена анализа сликаног програма архијерејског трона епископа пакрачко-славонског Кирила Живковића из 1787. године. Трон није био познат ни разматран као целина у ранијим истраживањима, а скорије је откривен на терену у веома оштећеном стању. Сви елементи сликаног декора том при-ликом су идентификовани, а могућа је и идеална реконструкција првобитне конструкције и дрворезбарских украса. Изворна иконо-графска поставка трона укључивала је икону са представом Христос проповеда у храму на леђном наслону и елаборирани сликани грб Пакрачко-славонске епархије са именом епископа Кирила Живковића и медаљоном са портретом цара Јосифа II. Наврдено овај трон чини важним открићем за познавање развоја идеја династичког патриотизма православне елите на подручју Славоније у XVIII сто-лећу, али и амблематских контекста формирања и тумачења баро-кне епархијске хералдике. El análisis del barroco iberoamericano tuvo un importantísimo encuentro en Roma en el año 1980 a partir del cual se generaron nuevos congresos que se escalonaron en Querétaro (1991), Sevilla (2001) y Ouro Preto (2006). En el año 2021 se cumplirá, por tanto, el cuadragésimo primer aniversario de esta iniciativa, razón por la que Granada toma el testigo alternante entre América y Europa proponiendo la celebración del V Congreso Internacional de Barroco Iberoamericano, entre los días 30 de mayo y 3 de junio de 2021, con el objetivo de reunir a los investigadores senior y noveles que trabajan temáticas referidas al concepto de barroco.
