Operative Image

Remote military interventions are, by their very nature, restricted to the closed system of computerised, heavily mediated environments of control. Due to their remote setting, drone operations structurally rely on visibility and controllability via a complex system of sensors, control instruments, software interfaces, and transmission technologies. In such cases, knowledge of a situation in an area of operation, the situational awareness, is based mainly on operative images in the form of visualised sensor data. But even where images form the primary, often sole, basis for action, the analysis must not be narrowed down to the level of depiction. The situation in which the images are being applied must also be considered. Against the background of an expanded understanding of what constitutes a military operation, we discuss the ground control station as a site of image-operations in contemporary warfare.

scene in Oslo, this article investigates the role the
photographic image plays in what has come to be known
as ‘locative media’ – an entire range of image software
that runs on mobile devices using GPS signals to locate
the user, and that emerged after the United States
government decided to end the intentional degradation of
the public GPS signal in 2001, fostering the development
of navigable photo-maps such as GSV, photo-synths and
other location-based image applications such as
Augmented Reality. The authors first address the
temporal discontinuities and gaps of the GSV database,
which the user navigates as a spatially continuous image.
Second, they show that the city is experienced as one and
the same data space, simultaneously traversed both onsite
and on-screen. Third, they critically interrogate the
navigability of the GSV image afforded by real-time data
processing based on mutual data exchanges between user
location, hardware, software, network and database.
They argue that the GSV image is what Harun Farocki,
in an article on cybernetic warfare, has called an
‘operative image’, an image that no longer represents an
object but is part of an operation. In fact, the users’
trajectories feeding back into the database initiate a
reverse operativity, which proves to be the more
problematic side of ubiquitous locative media
applications such as GSV.

La journée d’étude « Techno-images » s’interroge sur les images issues des cultures techniques et visuelles de la modernité, dans une perspective de travail héritée de l’archéologie des médias. Elle explore, au travers de huit communications, les pratiques des images institutionnelles, scientifiques, publicitaires, opérationnelles, psychotechniques dans les cultures visuelles, sur une chronologie allant du XIXe au XXIe siècles.

Si la distinction entre « images traditionnelles » (traditionelle bilder) et « images techniques » (technische bilder) est évoquée par le philosophe des médias Vilém Flusser pour décrire l’image photographique – et plus spécifiquement les images produites par des appareils techniques (apparate) – le projet « Techno-images » propose de réfléchir à la notion à la fois complémentaire et concurrentielle de « techno-image », en la replaçant dans le cadre du tournant « techno-culturel » des médias. Dans la continuité des travaux sur la « culture technique » ou « les techniques de la culture » (Kulturtechniken), apparus à partir des années 1990 dans le contexte de la Medienwissenshaft (Kittler, Siegert), notre recherche s’interroge sur les images produites par les instruments techniques et les diverses pratiques qui contribuent à définir une culture donnée. Ce projet étudie aussi les différentes formes de visualisation ou de configuration visuelle, comprises comme techniques culturelles. À cet égard, nous nous proposons de questionner la notion de « techno-image » de manière interdisciplinaire, afin d’ouvrir aux nouveaux horizons de la recherche, qui interprètent les médias comme des réseaux d’opérations, capables de reproduire, déplacer, traiter et refléter les distinctions fondamentales d’une culture.
