Pacioli

In 1496 Fra Pacioli's fame led to an invitation to join the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. Here Luca met Leonardo da Vinci and taught Leo-nardo the intricacies of geometry and in the meantime Leonardo informed Pacioli of the application of geometry to art and Architecture. The text of De Divina Proportione clearly depended on the close collaboration of these two Renaissance scholars. Leonardo himself drew the geometrical illustrations for the manuscript. In 1509 Pacioli published De Divina Proportione, integrated with the Tractato del'architectura, that begins with a discussion on the proportions of the human body. In this edition, Luca fits the tables with the construction of the capital letters. Pacioli's alphabet is based on the same square and circle construction that had guided Leon Battista Alberti. We felt that this beautiful alphabet needed to be restored and we set out to construct an accurate replica with GeoGebra, using the Pacioli's instructions although it was incomplete.

Rivela come la rifondazione sforzesca dell'impianto urbano del Castello di Cotignola, avvenuta a seguito di un incendio che l'aveva ridotto ad un cumulo di cenere, sia frutto di una pianificazione definita da ordine e razionalità secondo uno schema geometrico regolare, con l'applicazione della proporzione aurea. Un tale riassetto urbanistico nella patria dinastica degli Sforza, sotto la spinta delle ambizioni politiche di Lodovico il Moro, trova spiegazione solo con l'intervento di Leonardo e Luca Pacioli, nel momento in cui al servizio del duca di Milano stavano lavorando al trattato sulla sezione aurea, il 'De Divina Proportione'. Cotignola quindi fu assunta a modello di 'città ideale', trattandosi di uno dei primi esempi di realizzazione in pieno Rinascimento.

This paper seeks to elucidate the reason that the passage Particularis de Computis et Scripturis (PCS) appeared in the Summa, a mathematical work written by Luca Pacioli. Being PCS a work on commercial arithmetic, the antecedents of such works in Islamic and European mathematics are investigated, along with the extent of the practical use of mathematics by those societies. In addition, this work studies why Pacioli, who apparently had professional training in mathematics, became a well-known intellectual of his time.

(extract) This paper considers the role of Pacioli's Ricordanze, of the records that may be maintained within it, discusses the merits of maintaining a record book of this type, and questions why such a clearly useful device does not appear to have been adopted even though it was described in the same treatise which led to the universal adoption of double entry bookkeeping.

Nelle pagine di "Romagna Arte e Storia", infatti, il testo è andato erroneamente in stampa senza le correzioni apportate alle bozze e pertanto non risponde pienamente alle volontà della scrivente.

L’ampia fortuna del «Morgante» ha finito per distogliere l’attenzione della critica dalle altre opere di Luigi Pulci (1432-1484), poeta fiorentino fra i maggiori del nostro Rinascimento.
La presente edizione fornisce il testo critico di 48 componimenti, raggruppati in sette sezioni, a cui si aggiungono altri 7 sonetti di attribuzione dubbia o improbabile. Il testimoniale utile alla costituzione del testo consiste in oltre 20 manoscritti, due incunaboli e una cinquecentina, ma è stata censita ed esaminata anche la successiva tradizione a stampa, che costituisce un rilevante indicatore della fortuna dei sonetti extravaganti fino ai nostri giorni. Più di dieci sonetti (di cui uno inedito) sono conservati autografi, mentre una parte consistente dei restanti è testimoniata dall’«editio princeps» (Firenze, circa 1490), che fu sottoposta a una pesante censura tesa a eliminare, nei molti testi polemici del Pulci, i riferimenti ai suoi potenti avversari (il filosofo Marsilio Ficino, l’umanista e cancelliere della Repubblica Bartolomeo Scala).
L’escussione di tutta la tradizione permette di migliorare in molti punti il testo offerto dalle edizioni precedenti, aprendo la via a una riconsiderazione dell’intera produzione pulciana – non mancano, fra l’altro, i rapporti fra questi sonetti e il «Morgante» – e a una capillare messa a punto dei dati biografici e culturali relativi a questo autore.

A logic of simultaneity provides us a way to interpret complex events in both nature and narrative. Of the book, you have a very good cover.  Of the text of the book, it was withdrawn in 2015 or so. What remains is an Abstract of the thesis which you are reading here.  It poses that the rudiments of a science of simultaneity exists in Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (GAAP). The 'science' will begin through the critical investigation of principles in the art of declaring an accounting period for balances in a particular set (and nesting) of sub-accounts. Further development of a logic, to be called “generalized Pacioli,” should allow new methodologies of testing balances in nature and human experience.

The five ways to define obligations or claims (in time) across the accounting period boundaries correspond to five ways to define the potential for change and directed action.  These five “capacitance families” provide a broader and more coherent theory of work, differentiating static from dynamic potential (through a double-entry method) with qualities that become comparable to that of liquidity. The logic provides a more detailed basis for discussing complexity and function.

The Logic of Simultaneity is at the center of all the works I am currently working on.  The actual paper originally posted here was pulled in 2018 when it became clear that Capacitance classes (of work) and Coincidensity classes (of simultaneity) were either the same or descriptions of what is 'balanced' on either side of the ledger.  The potential impacts on the 'currency' being logged by experience was too great to leave the paper stand as it was written....(though much of the business about suits and gaming still stand...essentially, the 'winking' I allude to in my book Torque).  I anticipate several years before 'The Work of Emotion' is attempted.  ...and I leave this up on the site because of the cover design. and the image of Luca Pacioli.

The Pacioli Principle will be a passive representation system and vehicle for analyzing events outside of linear time. Extrapolating the principle to a “Pacioli Postulate” (where a concept of “simultaneity” extends to both paradox and coincidence) the argument is made that this interpretive approach results in a more comprehensive model of natural law, with a more elegant methodology for explaining ordering principles where emergent complexity represents the natural boundary.

The author suggests that both the principle and its strong-form in the postulate were known to Luca Pacioli and his collaborator Leonardo DeVinci when the Summa Arithmetica was published in 1494.  Their lives would have been at stake, quite literally, had they disclosed their discovery.  So the Pacioli Principle has been hidden for over five hundred years, before our eyes, as the grammar of representational integrity underlying sustainability (economics). 

Note, that block-chain technology and the IoT shall eventually obviate postings in currency in parallel with the fading away of money.  Transactions logged with capacitance shall require a full-blown grammar of capacitance classes to make it all work---while the potential permutations on relational networks shall depend on that grammar for symmetry maintenance of the value/measure of the current (present) to assure continuity and smooth strangeitions (pronounced 'strans'jitions' if you will, or simply 'change.').

Double entry bookkeeping emerged by the end of the 13th century and was adopted by, for example, the Datini of Prato during the 1380s. In the transition from single to double entry evident in the Datini Archives, initially accounting records were kept in an account book called a Ricordanze. Record books of this name were typical of Tuscany and, when such books were first used in Tuscany, businessmen began to use them also as a form of personal diary and autobiographical record. Others not in business followed suit and maintained purely personal biographical diaries of the same name. For those in business, the Ricordanze thus developed into a hybrid: partly autobiography and personal and, partly, a place to record matters relating to his business, including details of transactions and of other matters he did not wish to forget, such as promises, obligations, and conditional agreements.
