Partho-Sasanian and early Islamic

Abstract
This article examines the longstanding rivalry of Rome and Parthia, which began as an unintended consequence of Crassus’ decisive defeat at Carrhae in 53 BCE. It synthesizes the accounts and opinions of numerous Graeco-Roman writers from the Augustan Age to late antiquity in order to help illustrate the new and interconnected post-Carrhae world and its legacy. The rivalry of the Romans and Parthians became a primary focus of their foreign policies and drastically expanded their perceptions of the world in which they interacted. Even after the fall of the Parthians to the rebellious Sassanid Persians in the 220s CE, the Romans continued to find their three-century-long rivalry with the Parthians of interest and relevant to the changing world of late antiquity.

آرمین لنگرودی ـ کتاب "چگونه مسلمان شدیم؟" مبتنی بر پژوهش‌های جدیدی است که نظری کاملا متفاوت با نظر اسلام شناسان سنتی دارد؛ تاریخ طبری و سیره‌های ابن‌اسحاق و ابن‌هشام و احادیث، مبنای تاریخ نویسی سنتی اسلام هستند. پژوهش‌های جدید از یک‌طرف بریافته‌های تازه باستان‌شناسی تکیه‌دارند مانند سکه‌شناسی، سنگ‌نوشته‌ها و کتیبه‌ها و از طرفی با مطابقت‌‌دادن روایات اسلامی با منابع یونانی، سریانی و پارسی میانه صورت می‌گیرند. تاریخ سنتی اسلامی ـ همانطوری که در این کتاب خواهیم دید ـ به گونه‌ای، یک نگارش "پسا-زمانی" و بر همین مبنا خیال‌پردازانه و اُسطوره‌نگارانه بود. این وقایع‌نگاری، در گُذرِ اَدوار، به طور سیستماتیک، برنامه‌مَند و مُستمر به نفع حاکمان، مذهب، امامان و روحانیت مسلمان تغییر داده شده و بازسازی گردیده‌است. در این روشِ نگارشی، چیره‌گیِ داستانسرایی ایرانی نقش اولیه و بزرگی ایفا کرده، به طوری که ما در مواقعی، تفاوت بین داستانهای "شاهنامه" و "کارزار کربلا" و یا تفاوت شخصیت پهلوانانی همچون "علی" و "رستم" را نمی‌توانیم براحتی تشخیص دهیم. پیدایش اسلام همزمان است با دوران ساسانیان و جنگ‌های بی‌شمارِ آنها با امپراطوری روم شرقی (بیزانس). شکل‌گیری این مذهب می‌بایستی ضرورتاً با اتفاقات و شرایط سیاسی‌ـ‌اجتماعی این دوران، با کشمکش‌های این دو قدرت و با اعتقادات جاری مردم در آن زمان مرتبط باشد. به همین دلیل، بررسی مسائل "عقیدتی و ایدیولوژیکی" این دوران، جای گسترده‌تری را در این کتاب به خود اختصاص داده‌است. هدف نویسنده در این نوشته، نه بیانِ افسانه‌وارِ وقایع این دوران، بلکه فهم "مقبولیت و
مشروعیتی" است، که در زمان خود به این وقایع داده می‌شد. محتوای این مشروعیت، همانا توجیه مذهبی ـ عقیدتی این رُخدادها بود، که بعدها به شکل مذهب جدیدی بنام «اسلام» پدیدار گردید

The article describes the role of the members of the Parthian Mehrān played from the second half of the 5th century on Sasanian courts. It must be assumed that the Sasnaian kings ruled their country with the help of Parthian aristocracy. The reforms of the 6th century could  not be directed against status of the Parthian noblemen in Iran because neither Kawād nor Xusrō could not carry them without assistance of Parthian wuzurgān.

The paper discusses phenomena of continuity and inheritance in the Near East at the time of the Umayyad Caliphate (661-750), which had moved the political center of Islamic rule from Ḥiğāz to Šām (Greater Syria). The creation of an immense empire did not happen in a vacuum. The setting up of a fiscal state apparatus, based on the prevailing taxation of an overwhelming majority of non-Muslim subjects, took place by continuing with many aspects of the Roman and Sasanid administrative systems. At the same time the caliphal institution reshaped itself as patrimonial (in the Weberian sense) and dynastic, along the lines of the Roman-Byzantine and Iranian imperialities, with an emerging rhetoric of ‘Muhammadian’ legitimacy. The new Islamic empire therefore reworked - with its own dose of originality – elements of more ancient political traditions, within what Neuwirth adequately defined the ‘epistemic space of late antiquity’.

در آزمون دکتری باستان شناسی سال 1392 نقش برجسته « : پرسشی مرتبط با نقوش برجسته ساسانی آورده شده بود بدین شكل که
زمانی که این پرسش را دیدم اولین چیزی که باعث به وجود ؛»؟ جنگ سواران در نقش رستم متعلق به کدامین پادشاه سامانی است
بود! و این که آخر هیچ اثری از شاهان سامانی در این محوطه وجود ندارد، پس » پادشاه سامانی « آمدن علامت سوال شد واژه ی
چگونه می توان چنین پرسشی کرد؟ شاید بتوان ایراد تایپی را توجیهی برای این پرسش دانست؛ اما این پرسش، مشكل اساسی تر
دیگری نیز داشت و آن، این که در محوطه نقش رستم سه نقش برجسته جنگ سواران وجود دارد، و طراح محترم پرسش های
آزمون دکتری باستان شناسی حتی خود به این مهم آگاه نبوده است، در حالی که مسئولیت مهم مورد آزمون و خطا قرار دادن نسل
جدید باستان شناسی بر عهده ی این شخص گذاشته شده است. به هر روی، این پرسش عاملی شد تا نگارنده بر آن شود مقاله ایی
جدا برای هویت شناسی و تاریخ گذاری سه نقش برجسته جنگ سواران در نقش رستم ارائه کند، هر چند پیش از این پژوهش گران
مختلفی در این باره نظریه پردازی کرده اند، اما این سه اثر با نظریات ضد و نقیض و متفاوتی روبرو بوده است، و خوانندگان را دچار
سر درگمی می کند. در محوطه نقش رستم سه نقش برجسته جنگ سواران با شماره های III ، V و VII وجود دارد که دستور
حجاری هر یک از آن ها را یک شاه ساسانی داده است؛ ما در این مقاله ابتدا موقعیت جغرافیایی و وجه تسمیه محوطه نقش رستم را
مورد مطالعه قرار می دهیم، سپس به پیشینه پژوهشی مستشرقان و پژوهشگرانی که از نقش رستم دیدن کرده اند می پردازیم، در
قسمت سوم ابعاد و توصیف هر سه نقش برجسته و رزم جامه های ساسانی را داریم و در بخش سبک شناسی و هویت شناسی، پس از
ارائه نظریات پژوهشگرانی که درباره این سه اثر نظر داده اند، تاریخگذاری و هویت شناسی پیشنهادی خود را ارائه خواهیم کرد. در
پایان می توان این احتمال را داد که نقش برجسته شماره VII به بهرام دوم، نقش برجسته شماره V به هرمزد دوم، و نقش برجسته
شماره III احتمالاً به شاپور سوم تعلق دارد.

Along the history of Sassanid’s Empire many landmarks marked its turns. But the most important internal issues the kings Shapur I and Khosrau II had to go through were the political, military, social and administrative reforms that they had to imposse to ensure the empire and their power.

Contrairement à ce que l'on écrit souvent, il y a peu de preuves décisives que les Abbassides aient tenté de copier les Sassanides dans leur mode de gouvernement. L'occupation de Samarra par les souverains sassanides et les califes abbassides illustre bien les rapports entre l'héritage sassanide et les choix des califes abbassides. Samarra, qui suscitait peu les résidences avant l'époque sassanide, exerce soudain un fort attrait à la fin de la période sassanide. Il se prolonge à l'époque abbasside. Ce choix s'explique par le creusement d'al-Qāṭūl al-Kisrawī, le nouvel accès au réseau de canaux de Nahrawān qui capte l'eau du Tigre au-delà de la plaine alluviale mésopotamienne. Il fut choisi pour cette raison comme terrain de chasse royal par les Sassanides qui y élevèrent une tour commémorative, un palais dont les salles d'apparat s'étendaient entre un vaste réservoir et le Tigre ainsi qu'un parc de chasse. Ces installations étaient exclusivement réservées au souverain mais les nouveaux canaux stimulèrent l'économie agricole à l'Est de Baghdad et firent espérer au gouvernement une augmentation de ses ressources. À l'époque abbasside, différents souverains intervinrent à Samarra. Hārūn al-Rashīd fit aussi creuser, comme les souverains sassanides, un nouveau canal (Qāṭūl Abī al-Jund), parallèle et à l'ouest du Qāṭūl inférieur. À la manière sassanide, il fit construire un monument commémorant ce creusement, l'Octogone de Qādisiyya, orienté vers la qibla. Seules les murailles de ce nouveau site furent achevées. Trois avenues convergeaient vers une place centrale dans laquelle devait prendre place une mosquée. Contiguë à cette place, une seconde surface rectangulaire correspondait sans doute à un palais. Le site était une réplique parfaite de la Cité Ronde de Baghdad, bâtie trente ans auparavant mais avec certains changements : la place centrale notamment était occupée par la mosquée et non plus par le palais. Les sources hésitent, pour la qualification du site, entre ville (madīna) et palais (qaṣr). La taille du site semble indiquer que le calife avait eu l'intention d'y résider et d'y héberger, comme à Baghdad, une partie de l'armée. Le calife al-Ma'mūnī construisit un canal prolongeant celui de Qāṭūl, mais le projet se révéla catastrophique : le nouveau canal, creusé trop près de l'ancien, entraîna l'effondrement de l'espace les séparant et détourna peu à peu le Tigre de son ancien cours. Enfin, un dernier calife, Al-Mu'taṣim, voulut habiter Samarra avec pour raison principale la chasse, mais aussi le souci d'y loger la cour et une base militaire. À la différence de l'armée sassanide qui prenait ses quartiers en province, l'armée abbasside tenait les siens dans les capitales, Baghdad et Samarra. La nouvelle cité, Surra Man Ra'ā, fondée en 221/836, comprenait un palais califal et une avenue longue de sept kilomètres, avec une seule inflexion à l'emplacement des marchés et à proximité de la première mosquée de la communauté, qui fut plus tard remplacée par celle de al-Mutawakkil avec son minaret en spirale. Mis à part la mosquée et les marchés, presque tout le site était occupé par les cantonnements de l'armée. Les maisons des secrétaires et d'autres personnages de l'élite civile, qui s'étaient regroupées autour de la première mosquée constituaient toutefois une exception importante. En outre, deux bourgades furent établies à une certaine distance, le cantonnement des Turcs et celui des Sogdiens. À l'Est de la cité un parc entouré d'un mur en terre, al-Ḥayr, fut aménagé. Ce parc ne fut pas une réussite car ses murs étaient situés en bordure orientale de la ville de Surra Man Ra'ā, interdisant toute expansion de la ville. Il fut abandonné et sa superficie occupée par trois champs de course et deux muṣallās. Al-Mutawakkil (847-861), le plus important bâtisseur à Samarra, remplaça le parc détruit par deux autres, situés au sud, autour de l'Octogone, sur chaque rive du Tigre. Plus tard, quand, en 859, il entreprit de construire la nouvelle cité royale d'al-Mutawakkiliyya, il se rapprocha des usages sassanides en reconstruisant le palais sassanide et le parc au nord de Qāṭūl. Cette entreprise fut de courte durée car Al-Mutawakkil fut assassiné deux ans plus tard et al-Mutawakkiliyya abandonnée. La chasse dans la Samarra abbasside était-elle aussi ritualisée que celle qui est décrite sur les reliefs de Khusraw Parvīz à Ṭāq-i Bustān ? Les livres de chasse ne mentionnent jamais ce style de chasse et préfèrent insister sur la fauconnerie et la chasse avec chiens. Le type de chasse pratiqué rappelle plutôt celui qui est évoqué à Quṣayr ʿAmra qu'à Ṭāq-i Bustān. Il semble que les Abbassides choisirent Samarra pour la même raison, la chasse. Après l'abandon de la cité par les califes, Samarra perdit sa prééminence, même si elle resta célèbre comme ville du siège des 10 e et 11 e imams des Shiites. Durant la période sassanido-abbasside, Samarra fournit un bon exemple de l'étendue avec laquelle les Abbassides suivaient ou non celles de leurs prédécesseurs sassanides. Les deux choisirent Samarra pour défendre leur royauté. Il semble donc qu'à Samarra les Abbassides qui avaient hérité de la tradition des parcs de chasse sassanides les aient utilisés de manière différente. La première conclusion que suggère le matériel de Samarra est la survie des traditions et pratiques sassanides, plutôt qu'une référence délibérée à l'identité sassanide. Les Abbassides n'avaient aucun intérêt direct pour le nationalisme iranien. Ils continuèrent à répandre le système de Qāṭūl, parce que c'était la tradition existante. De la même façon, les parcs de chasse furent aménagés suivant la tradition la plus récente, même si cela ne correspondait point aux nécessités abbassides.

Einige Münzbilder und Darstellungen in Stuck und Malerei aus den sog. Wüstenschlössern in der
Levante wurden von der bisherigen Forschung als Darstellungen eines Umayyadenkalifen oder -
prinzen interpretiert. Sie entsprechen keiner uniformen, neuartigen Herrscherikonografie, sondern
orientierten sich an römisch-byzantinischen und sasanidischen Vorbildern. Diese Vorbilder wurden
von den Umayyadenkalifen keinesfalls zufällig ausgewählt, waren Byzanz und das Sasanidenreich
doch die beiden Großmächte der spätantiken Welt, denen es die Umayyaden gleichtun wollten. An
welche Werte und Ideale – heilig wie profan – wollten die Umayyadenkalifen durch diese
Angleichung anknüpfen? Wie der Umayyadenkalif sahen sich der sasanidische Shahanshah und der
byzantinische Kaiser als göttlich legitimiert. Die sakrale Aura des Herrschers kam bildlich z. B. im
Nimbus zum Ausdruck, wie man ihn auch in Qusayr Amra findet. Auch die mögliche Verwendung von
biblischen Figuren oder Christus Pantokrator als Vorlagen gab dem umayyadischen Herrscherbild
vielleicht einen sakralen Charakter. In diesem Vortrag sollen zum einen die möglichen Vorlagen der
umayyadischen Herrscherbilder untersucht werden, zum anderen soll der Frage nachgegangen
werden, was diese Motivauswahl über die Konstruktion einer umayyadischen Herrscheridentität
aussagt.

The present book seeks to study the principles of legitimacy in the relationship between Sasanian rulers and their subordinates and through this approach tries to achieve a novel periodization of the history of this dynasty. Sasanian, who became rulers of Iran in the third century AD, encountered a legitimacy crisis from the beginning and sought to stabilize their legitimacy in the opinion of their subordinates. This book attempts to answer the following questions based on the historical analysis of material sources and historical texts: What is the principles of the legitimacy of the Sasanian state among its clients, and what is the relation between the changes in the principles of legitimacy with the periodization of Sasanian history? The author's claim is that, at the beginning of their power, the Sasanian shāhānshāhs  tried to legitimize their rule by continuing former ruling traditions and emphasizing on Divine Kingship. When political, social, economic and religious changes caused a transformation in the intellectual texture of Iranian society, Sasanian court needed to make fundamental changes in the principles of legitimacy based on Divine Kingship and turned to the legitimation based on Sacred Kingship. This change was in line with the ancient near east political tradition. However, it brought about fundamental changes in the cosmology of Iranian society, and also had lasting effects on the policy making method in centuries after Sasanian era. Understanding the principles of the legitimacy of the Sasanian state during different periods will help provide a new periodization of the history of this ancient Iranian dynasty. In this periodization, the Sasanian history is divided into two periods of Divine and Sacred Kingship. These two periods are separated from each other by a Historical Caesura to the recognition of the Zoroastrian religion and its conversion into a state religion. Contrary to previous classifications, this periodization does not focus solely on political developments; it considers a set of internal and external factors related to the structural changes that have been introduced as factors in changing the principles of the legitimacy of the Sasanian state.

Abstract: In modern studies and in the process of archeological investigations, various objectives are considered;
including, in regard with the study of constructions, sometime problems such as styles, architectural characteristics,
economic conditions, the power of ruling government, the rate of interests and tendencies of people toward religion,
etc, could be understood much better. The Sassanids dynasty is among the historical periods of Iran, when attention
to Zoroastrian religion and sensitivity to religious matters and events were considered the most important affairs of
the kings and the study of the history of this period partly reveals the reasons for the religious attitudes of the kings.
Accordingly, the writer of this article titled:” Archeological study and dispersion analysis of Chahar taq es in
Sassanids era in the west and southwest of Fars province” has investigated it in three chapters of archeological
studies in the winter 2011, and spring and summer of 2012 In this study, the writer manages to recognize 18 Chahar
taq es between the cities of Baladeh, Farashband and Firoozabad. A present article seeks to study the chronological
succession of one of the most tacit and outstanding Chahar taq es in this region, that is, Rohini Chahar taq.

Tras la caída del Imperio parto a manos de Ardešīr, el nacimiento de la nueva Persia sasánida llevo aparejada la aparición de un nuevo poder en Oriente Próximo que sustentaría su cohesión y expansión en la fuerza militar. A lo largo de su historia los sasánidas no solo tuvieron que hacer frente a numerosos problemas internos, sino que debieron desarrollar su estrategia militar, heredera de la tradición parta, para poder enfrentarse con garantías a poderosos enemigos como el Imperio romano-bizantino, los hunos, los heftalitas o los turcos goks. Finalmente, un imperio desgastado por los constantes enfrentamientos no podría resistir al empuje de los árabes musulmanes tras cuatro siglos de historia.

A lo largo de su historia, el ejército sasánida se convirtió por derecho propio en una de las fuerzas bélicas más importantes de su época y que logró enfrentarse de igual a igual con la todopoderosa máquina bélica que suponía el ejército romano-bizantino, obteniendo numerosas e importantes victorias. Su grandeza radica no sólo en haber sabido mantener y fomentar los aspectos clave del tradicional ejército parto, sino el haber imprimido su propia seña de identidad en él para convertirlo en una garantía tanto del mantenimiento como de la expansión del imperio. La caballería catafractaria se convirtió así en legendaria por su efectividad o maniobrabilidad, pero no era el único elemento importante del ejército sasánida pues éste también incluía expertos arqueros cuyas nubes de flechas provocaban estragos en los ejércitos enemigos. Si a ello sumamos la habilidad táctica de los soberanos sasánidas y la estrategia defensiva que emplearon mediante fortalezas y murallas, destinadas a proteger el imperio, veremos que tanto la fama como el miedo que inspiraba la maquinaria bélica sasánida estaban justificados.

In Europe in the Merovingian period, cowrie molluscs represent the most meaningful archaeological source material from the Orient apart from almandine and ivory. A mass zoological study of cowries from Southwest Germany and Switzerland produced a monotonous and therefore interesting result from a trade history aspect: All the specimens which it was possible to determine were variants of the species cypraea pantherina wich is only to be found in the middle and southern Red Sea. Fossil finds and ecological considerations indicate that these habitats have not changed substantially in the course of the last centuries. As cowrie mollusks occur in large numbers independently of the history of the development of costumes in individual periods of the Merovingian age, they may be classified as indicators of trading history phenomena.

Les coquillages cauries constituant en Europe centrale de l'epoque mérovingienne, parallèlement à l'almandin et à l'ivorie, la source archéologique la provenant du Sud-Ouest de l'Allemagne et de la Suisse a donné un résultat monotone et par là-même interéssant pour l'histoire du commerce: pour tous les exemplaires qui ont pu être idetifiés, il s'agit d'une variante de l'espèce cypraea pantherina, qui n'existent que dans la Mer rouge centrale et méridionale. Les découvertes de fossiles et les réflexions écologiques semblent indiquer que cet habitat n'a pas beaucop changé au cours derniers siècles. Etnant donné que les coquillages cauris indépendamment de l'évolution historique apparaissent massivement à divers moments de l'ère mérovingienne, il devrait être possible de les considérer comme des indicateurs des phénomènes de l'histoire commerce.
