Phocaea

Antik Çağ’da Phokaia Ekonomisi” adlı çalışma, mevcut arkeolojik verilerin yanı sıra antik ve modern kaynaklar ışığında hazırlanmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Phokaia’nın (Foça) ticari ve ekonomik yapısındaki gelişmeleri kronolojik olarak tespit etmek ve bu kentin antik dünyadaki yerini belirleyebilmektir.

This study called “The Economy of Phocaea in the Ancient Age” was prepared in the light of current archaeological data, ancient and modern sources. The purpose of this study is to reveal the place of Phokaia in the ancient world together with the reasons of trade and economy appeared in the historical process

Summary - The Phocaean colony of Massalia introduced its own coinage around 525 BC. The “heavy” drachm, a silver coin weighing around 3.7 g and depicting the head of Artemis and a lion walking right, was probably struck during the 3rd century. In this work, all the main features of this particular denomination such as chronology, finds and mint organization are analysed and discussed. A die link study, based on a corpus of 90 surviving specimens, enables to estimate the original number of dies and therefore to make some hypotheses about the output of the Massalian mint. The reasons for the introduction of this denomination are compared with other cases and discussed.

Résumé - La colonie phocéenne de Massalia introduisit sa propre monnaie vers 525 av. J.-C. La drachme « lourde », une monnaie d’argent pesant environ 3,7 g, avec les représentations d’une tête d’Artémis et d’un lion marchant à droite, fut probablement frappée durant le iiie siècle. Dans cette étude, nous analyserons les principales caractéristiques de cette dénomination, comme la chronologie, les découvertes et l’organisation de l’atelier. Une étude des liaisons de coins, basée sur un corpus de 90 exemplaires qu’il a été possible de recenser, permet d’estimer la quantité originale de coins et de formuler des hypothèses quant à la production de l’atelier de Massalia. Par comparaison avec d’autres cas, les possibles raisons de l’introduction de cette dénomination sont discutées.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, hem arkeolojik kazılar hem de antik ve modern kaynaklar yardımıyla, Phokaia’nın Hellenistik Dönem’deki görünümüne ışık tutmaktır. Beraberinde, MÖ 6. yüzyılın başlarında çok büyük bir kent olan Phokaia’nın, Hellenistik Dönem’deki küçülme sebepleri ele alınacaktır. MÖ 7. yüzyılın ortalarından itibaren kolonizasyon hareketleri içinde yer alan Phokaia, özellikle deniz ve kara ticaretinde çok etkin olmuştur. Beraberinde, verimli topraklara sahip olması, deniz kabuğundan elde edilen mor renkli boya ve tüf taşının ihracatı sayesinde, Phokaia MÖ 6. yüzyılın başlarında bölgenin zengin kentlerden biri olmuştur. Ancak, MÖ 546 yılında Persler’in kenti ele geçirmesinden sonra, bu ihtişamlı yıllar yavaş yavaş etkisini yitirmeye başlamış ve Phokaia eski gücüne bir daha ulaşamamıştır. Kent, MÖ 546’dan MÖ 334’e kadar Persler’e, MÖ 334’den sonra da Makedon Krallığı’na vergi vermek zorunda kalmıştır. Ardından Hellenistik Dönem içinde, kent sırasıyla, Antigonos, Lysimakhos ve II. Antiokhos’un (Seleukos Krallığı) kontrolüne girerek sık sık el değiştirmiştir. MÖ 3. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde Galatların, MÖ 3. yüzyılın sonuna kadar ise, Pergamon etkisine girmiştir. Phokaia’nın bu kadar sık el değiştirmesi, kente uygulanan talanlar ve ağır vergiler yüzünden kentin kendini toparlamasına izin vermemiştir. Phokaia’nın can damarı olan korunaklı limanı, Hellenistik Dönem başlarında Smyrna limanının etkin hale gelmesiyle önemini yitirmeye başlamıştır. Ayrıca bu dönemde güçlenen Smyrna ve Pergamon kentleri arasındaki yol ağında da Phokaia dışarıda kalmıştır. Phokaia, MÖ 3. yüzyılın son çeyreğinde diplomasideki ilk ve tek doğru kararını vermiş ve Pergamon’a bağlı kalarak huzurlu yıllar geçirmiştir. Ancak buna karşılık, MÖ 2. ve 1. yüzyılda, Phokaia’nın taraf olduğu devlet ve kişilerin savaşlarda yenilmesi yüzünden, kent de bu konuda olumsuz etkilenmiştir. Hellenistik Dönem’de Phokaia’nın yaptığı diplomasi hataları, çevresinde güçlü devletlerin ortaya çıkması, stratejik öneminin azalması, alternatif deniz ve karayolu rotalarının daha etkin olması yüzünden, kent eski günlerine bir daha dönememiştir. Bütün bunların  sonucunda, Phokaia’nın Hellenistik Dönem ile ilgili arkeolojik tabakalarında kentin küçüldüğü net görülebilmektedir.

ÖZET
Yunan dünyasında ele geçen palmiye sütun başlıkları kendine has formuyla dikkat çekmektedir. Bu başlık, genel olarak Kalathos, ters çan ya da çanak şeklinde bir formun etrafına palmiye yaprakları sarılmış şekilde görünmektedir. Anıtsal mimaride Arkaik dönemden Hellenistik döneme kadar oldukça seyrek olarak, Roma döneminde ise daha yaygın kullanıldığı görülmektedir. Yunan dünyasında Arkaik dönemde, Arkades (Girit), Phokaia ve Delphi’deki Klazomenai ile Massalia hazine binalarında kullanılanlar olmak üzere dört yerde karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu başlıklara benzeyen en erken örnekler ve en yaygın olanları Mısır’da karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Mısır palmiye sütun başlıklarının ilk taş örnekleri MÖ 3. binin ortalarında ortaya çıkmaktadır. Ancak en yoğun olarak MÖ 2. binin ortalarında kullanılmıştır. Üzerinde küçük bir abakusu olan bu başlıklarda, orta damarı oldukça belirgin olan yapraklar yukarıdan kavis yapacak şekilde bir eğimle sarkarlar. Bu yapraklar aşağıda hepsi kurdele ile bağlanmış bir buket gibi görünmektedir. Başlığın bitiminde yani kurdelenin alt kısımda üçlü sarılan halkalar dikkat çekmektedir. Mısır Palmiye sütun başlıkları Yunan örneklerine göre daha zarif bir görünüm sergilemektedir. Mısır’da bu başlıklar, bazen diğer sütun çeşitleriyle karışık olarak bazen de kendi başına yapı girişlerinde, kutsal içerikli yapıların avlu ve stoalarında simgesel bir mimari eleman olarak kullanılmıştır. Yunan dünyasında ise palmiye ile ilgili sütun başlığı veya benzer tarzdaki ilk bilgiler, MÖ 7. yüzyıldan itibaren antik kaynaklardan alınmaktadır. Günümüze ulaşmayan bu eserler, mimaride kullanılan bir elemandan çok, tek başına duran bir sütun başlığı veya sütun gövdeli üst kısmı palmiye ağacı şeklinde simgesel anlamlar yüklenerek kullanıldığı anlaşılmaktadır. Ele geçen ilk somut örnekler, Girit-Arkades’te bulunan ve kendine özgü formuyla dikkat çeken palmiye başlığı, Yunan dünyasındaki taştan yapılmış sütun başlıkları arasındaki en erken örnektir. Kalathosu andıran gövdenin üst bölümü konveks şeklinde olup, 26 yapraklı başlığın aşağıdan yukarıya doğru sarkan yaprak uçları genişleyerek şekil almıştır. Bu düzenin altında yaprakları toplar şeklinde görülen sarmal bir halka bulunmaktadır. Yaprakların ortasından dikey olarak inen merkezi damar şeklinde görülen sarmal bir halka bulunmaktadır. Devşirme malzeme olarak kullanılan bu abakuslu başlık küçük olması sebebiyle, muhtemelen ya bir adak ya da cenaze töreninde simgesel bir amaç için kullanılmıştır. Başlığın Mısır ve Girit etkisi hakkında birtakım tartışmalar bulunmaktadır. Diğer örnekler, Delphi’deki Massalia (Marsilya) ve Klazomenai (Urla) hazine binalarında kullanılan palmiye başlıkları Phokaia’daki örneğe benzemektedir. Klazomenai başlığı, Massalia başlığına göre yaprak sayısı daha fazla ve bu sebeple de daha büyük yapılmıştır. Massalia’nın Phokaia’nın kolonisi olması ve Klazomenai’nin denizden Phokaia’ya yakın olmasının özellikle bu konu açısından aralarında yakın bir ilişkinin olması gerekmektedir. Bu başlıklarda, diğer palmiye tipi başlıklardan ayıran en önemli özellik, merkezi (orta) damarının ortadan kalkmış olmasıdır. Başlıkların in antis planlı hazine binalarının ön tarafında kullanıldıkları tahmin edilmektedir. Bu başlıkların Arkades ve Phokaia örneklerinden sonra yapıldığı tahmin edilmektedir. Phokaia palmiye başlığının yapraklarındaki merkezi damarın belirginliğiyle dikkat çekmektedir. Bu yönüyle özellikle Mısır ve Arkades örneklerine çok benzemektedir. 12 kıvrım yapan yaprağa sahiptir. Başlık, Athena tapınağının ilk yapım evresinde, pronaosta, muhtemelen Tanrıça Athena ile bağlantılı zaferi simgeleyen mimari bir eleman olarak kullanılmıştır. Gözenekli tüf taşından yapılan başlık abakussuz kullanılmıştır. MÖ 6. yüzyılın başlarında yapılan Phokaia palmiye başlığı, bu tarihle, Hellen dünyasındaki mimaride kullanılan en erken taş palmiye başlık olarak değerlendirilmelidir. Phokaia başlığı, MÖ 7. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren Phokaia’nın Naukratis’le (Mısır) yaptığı yoğun ticari ilişkiler sonucunda gelmiş olabileceği görüşü önem kazanmaktadır.

Das Palmenkapitell in Phokaia und seine Herkunft
In der griechischen Welt ist das Palmenkapitell mit seiner eigentümlichen Form
recht auffälig. Es tritt zumeist Kalathos-förmig, also eher in einer Glocken- oder
Schalenform nach oben auf und ist von Palmenblättern umgeben. In der monumentalen Architektur ist es von der archaischen bis zur hellenistischen Zeit selten anzutreffen, wogegen es sich in der römischen Zeit eher bemerkbar macht, in der es ziemlich weitverbreitet gewesen war. Das Palmenkapitell tritt in der hellenistischen Welt während der archaischen Zeit in vier Orten wie Arkades (Kreta), Phokaia (Foça) und in den Schatzhäusern Clazomenai (Urla) und Massalia (Marseille) in Delphi auf. Die frühesten Beispiele, die den genannten Besipielen am meisten ähneln sowie die, die weiter verbreitet waren, tauchen in Ägypten auf. Den ersten äyptischen Beispielen der Palmenkapitelle aus Stein begegnen wir Mitte 3000 v.Chr. Jedoch wurden diese größtenteils Mitte 2000 v. Chr. verwendet. Auf diesen Palmenkapitellen mit kleinem Abakus, hängen die Blätter von oben mit recht flagranter mittlerer Ader bogenförmig herunter. Weiter unten bilden alle Blätter zusammen einen Strauß, umgebunden mit einer Schleife. Im Schlusstein des Kapitells, also im unteren Teil dieser Schleife, fallen Ringe im Dreier-Wickel auf. Im Vergleich zu ihren hellenisten Beispielen treten die äyptischen Palmenkapitelle mit mehr Eleganz hervor. In Ägypten wurden diese Kapitelle teils mit verschiedenen Arten von Säulen gemischt, teils einzeln an Eingängen oder teilweise in Höfen oder Stoas von Sakralbauten als symbolisches architektonisches Element benutzt. In der griechischen Welt sind die ersten Angaben oder weitere Einblicke über das Palmenkapitell ab dem 7. Jahrhundert. v.Chr. aus antiken Quellen zu entnehmen. Es hat sich herausgestellt, dass diese Werke, die leider unsere Zeit nicht Kapitell oder als ein Schaft in Palmenform verwendet wurden, denen wiederum eine symbolisierende Bedeuteung beigemessen wurde. Das erste konkrete Beispiel, das in Kreta-Arkades aufgefundene Palmenkapitell mit seiner eigentümlichen
Form, stellt das früheste Beispiel für die Steinkapitelle der griechischen Welt
dar. Der obere Teil des Schafts in Konvexform, der uns an ein Kalathos erinnert,
erhielt seine Form durch die 26 Blätter am Kapitell, indem die Blattspitzen von
unten nach oben sich aufbreitend hochsteigen und wieder herunterhängen. Ein
spiralförmiger Ring, der sich unmittelbar unter dieser Ordnung befindet, fügt diese
Blätter zusammen. Dadurch dass dieses Kapitell mit Abakus recht klein war und
als Einsammelmaterial benutzt wurde, ist es anzunehmen, dass es entweder als
Gelübde oder als Symbol bei einer Beerdigung diente. Der äyptische oder kretanische Einfluss steht wiederum zur Debatte. Die anderen Beispiele wie die Kapitelle in den Schatzhäusern Massalia (Marseille) und Clazomenai (Urla) in Delphi, sehen sich mit dem in Phokaia recht ähnlich aus. Das Clazomenai-Palmenkapitell erscheint durch die Mehrzahl seiner Blätter größer als das Massalia-Kapitell. Dadurch dass Massalia eines der Kolonien von Phokaia war und dass Clazomenai und Phokaia sich über den Seeweg näher lagen, weist wiederum auf die Ähnlichkeit und auf eine enge Beziehung hin. Die genannten Kapitelle unterscheiden sich von weiteren Arten der Palmenkapitelle größtenteils durch die aufgehobene mittlere Blattader. Man vermutet, dass diese Kapitelle am Eingang der Schatzhäuser im in antis–Plan angewendet worden sind, wobei auch die Wahrscheinlichkeit besteht, dass die Palmenkapitelle in Phokaia und Arkades die Vorgänger dieser Kapitelle gewesen sind. Des Weiteren fallen die flagranten mittleren Blattadern des Phokaia- Palmenkapitells recht deutlich auf, was die Ähnlichkeit mit seinen Beispielen in Ägypten und Arkades hervorhebt. Das Phokaia-Kapitell hat 12 Palmenblätter. Es wurde in der ersten Bauphase des Athena Tempels als symbolisierendes architektonisches Element am Pronaos angewendet, was vermutlich einen Triumph Athenas andeutet. Das Kapitell aus Tuffstein mit Poren wurde ohne Abakus verwendet.  Das Phokaia Palmenkapitell, das in den Anfängen des 6. Jahrhundert v.Chr. erstellt wurde, sollte mit seiner Datierung als das früheste Beispiel in der griechischen Architektur für Palmenkapitelle aus Stein bewertet werden. Die Annahme, dass das Phokaia-Palmenkapitell ab der zweiten Hälfte des 7. Jahrhunderts v.Chr. unter dem Einfluss des regen Handels zwischen Phokaia und Naucratis (Ägypten) sich bemerkbar machte, ist von großer Bedeutung.

Öz: “Arkaik Dönem’de Phokaia’nın Lydia ile İlişkileri Üzerine Tespitler” adlı çalışma, mevcut arkeolojik veriler, antik ve modern kaynaklar ışığında hazırlanmıştır. Bu konu başlığı önceden hiç çalışılmadığından, önem arz etmektedir. Çalışmanın amacı, Phokaia Arkaik Dönem’de Lydia ile ilgili ilişkilerinin var olduğunu tespitlerle ortaya koymaktır. Phokaia’nın Arkaik Dönem’de Ionia’nın en önemli kentlerinden biri olmuştur. Kent, sahip olduğu coğrafik avantajları (Smyrna Körfezi’nin girişi olan kuzey batı ucunda olması, korunaklı iki limanı ve doğuya bağlanan Kral Yolu’na olan yakınlığı) sayesinde hem denizde hem de karayolu ticaretinde Lydia için önemli olabileceğini göstermektedir. Başkenti Sardis olan Lydia Devleti, komşuları olan Kimmerler, Asurlar, Medler ve Persler ile sık sık savaşlar ve çeşitli ilişkiler içinde olmuştur. MÖ 700-546 yılları arasında batısındaki Ion kentleriyle de yer yer dostane yer yer düşmanca davranacak şekilde yoğun ilişkiler içinde bulunmuştur. Dolayısıyla bir Ionia kenti olan Phokaia’nın Lydia ile ilişkileri, çalışmanın ana konusunu oluşturmuştur. Bu ilişkilerin ana odağı, son Lydia kralları olan Alyattes ve Kroisos dönemleri olacaktır. Bununla ilgili Herodotos’un yazmış oldukları, bu konuda rehberlik etmiştir. Çalışmada, Phokaia’nın tarihsel süreci, coğrafik özellikleri, denizaşırı kolonizasyon faaliyetleri, Lydia-Ionia ilişkileri ve kentteki kültsel ve arkeolojik kanıtlar ele alınarak, Lydia ile olabilecek bağlantılarına ulaşılmaya çalışılmış, erken dönem elektron sikke kullanımı, Phokaia’nın kent suru, Kybele kültü, kentte ele geçen lydIon seramiği, tümülüs, kaya mezarı ve Athena Tapınağı’nda bulunan mimari terrakotta gibi Lydia etkili olabileceği düşünülen arkeolojik kanıtlar ortaya konulmuştur. Phokaia was one of the most important cities of Ionia during the Archaic Period. The city shows that it can be important for Lydia both in sea and road trade thanks to its geographical advantages (It is at the north-west end, which is the entrance to the Gulf of Smyrna, its two sheltered harbors and its proximity to the King's Road connecting to the east). The state of Lydia, whose capital was Sardis, was in frequent wars and various relatIons with its neighbors, the Cimmerians, Assyrians, Medes and Persians. Between 700 and 546 BC, it had intense relatIons with the Ionian cities in the west, sometimes friendly and sometimes hostile. Therefore, the relatIons of Phokaia, an Ionian city, with Lydia constituted the main subject of the study. The main focus of these relatIons will be the periods of the last Lydian kings, Alyattes and Croesus. The writings of Herodotus about this have guided this issue. In the study, the historical process of Phokaia, its geographical advantages, overseas colonizatIon activities, Lydia-Ionian relatIons and the cultural and archaeological evidence in the city were discussed, and its possible connectIons with Lydia were tried to be reached. Archaeological evidence, which is thought to be effective in Lydia, has been revealed the use of early period electron coins, the city wall of Phokaia, the cult of Cybele, the Lydian pottery (LydIon) found in the city, the tumulus, the rock tomb and the architectural terracotta found in the Temple of Athena.

Ozet Izmir’in 70 km kuzeybatisinda yer alan Foca Ilcesi, Bati Anadolu’daki en buyuk antik kentlerden birine ev sahipligi yapar: Phokaia. I.O. 7. yuzyildan Gec Roma Donemi’ne kadar soz konusu cografya icindeki en onemli seramik uretim merkezlerinden biriydi. Ozellikle 3. Donem kazilari bu seramik uretiminin potansiyelini gozler onune sermistir. Kazilar sirasinda ortaya cikarilmis en buyuk seramik depozitleri Roma ve Gec Roma Donemlerine aittir. Oyle ki, bazi seramik coplukleri kent icinde dogal bir tepe gorunumundedir. Bu copluklerden biri de deniz icinde kesfedilmistir. 2017 yilinda Foca’nin batisindaki Canak Koyu icinde, deniz tabani uzerinde cok sayida seramik gorulmus ve bu alan 2018 yili kazi calismalarina dahil edilmistir. Yaklasik bir haftalik kisa bir arazi calismasi sonucunda, 0-1.30m. seviyeleri arasinda deniz tabaninin altinda yogun seramik curuf ve bozuk uretim parcanin ele gecmesi bu alanin I.S. 2-4. Yuzyillar arasinda seramik coplugu olarak kullanildigini gostermistir. ...

The study titled "DetectIons on the RelatIons of Phokaia with Lydia in the Archaic Period" was prepared in the light of existing archaeological data, ancient and modern sources. Since this topic has never been studied before, it becomes important. The aim of the study is to reveal that Phokaia had relatIons with Lydia in the Archaic Period. Phokaia was one of the most important cities of Ionia during the Archaic Period. Between 700 and 546 BC, it had intense relatIons with the Ionian cities in the west, sometimes friendly and sometimes hostile. Therefore, the relatIons of Phokaia, an Ionian city, with Lydia constituted the main subject of the study. The main focus of these relatIons will be the periods of the last Lydian kings, Alyattes and Croesus. The writings of Herodotus about this have guided this issue. In the study, the historical process of Phokaia, its geographical advantages, overseas colonizatIon activities, Lydia-Ionian relatIons and the cultural and archaeological evidence in the city were discussed, and its possible connectIons with Lydia were tried to be reached. Archaeological evidence, which is thought to be effective in Lydia, has been revealed the use of early period electron coins, the city wall of Phokaia, the cult of Cybele, the Lydian pottery (LydIon) found in the city, the tumulus, the rock tomb and the architectural terracotta found in the Temple of Athena.

Abstract
In the Archaic period, Phocaea has been one of the most influential cities with Miletos during the overseas colonization process due to the inadequacy  of agricultural areas and the existing sheltered two ports and the presence of strong states from the land. Phocaea, within the twelve Ion city, is the first city to fulfil the sea voyage with 50 rowing vessels. By organizing maritime transport in the Mediterranean, Marmara and the Central Black Sea regions,  the city has established many colonies in 7th century B.C. Through extensive trade relations and established colonies, Phocaea has become one of the most advanced cities of Ionia in the first half of the 6th century B.C. As a result of intense trade relations with Egypt, Phocaea is particularly influenced by the magnificent architecture of Egypt from the mid 7th century B.C to 525 BC years. Phocaea, Naukratis more of the character of colonization density emporion style in Egypt, with a port that is understood to be in the nature of trade garrison. However, emporion established here, which is a courtesy of the King, is understood to be limited to a temporary settlement. Thanks to maritime transport, they more had the opportunity to trade based on barter.  Phocaea  production of ceramics and inscriptions found in Naukratis are evidence proving that Herodotus mentioned the existence of Phocaeans in Egypt. In addition, tiles scrab that is estimated to be made in Egypt and uncovered in the Phokaia excavation and that with earthen various figurines and ceramics found Phocaea and the Egyptian effective palm-leaf column headings presence of Phocaea verify that there is interaction with Egypt in the context of colonization movements in the Archaic period.

Seal remains, especially the harp seal is a common find from Stone Age settlements in the Baltic basin. The presence and disappearance of harp seal form the Baltic Sea is an interesting and widely discussed topic. Seal bones are quite easy determined to family (Phocidae), but more difficult to determine to species. Morphological differences between harp seal and ringed seal has been discussed by several researchers and line drawings has been made to illustrate the criteria for species determination. The aim of this study is to improve the ability to identify two species of seals - harp seal and ringed seal based on three dimensional visualisations and create a database with 3D models that could be used in further studies. Abstract:
Foça district, which is located about 70 km Northwestern of İzmir, hostsone of the biggest ancient citites in Western Anatolia: Phocaea.
This city was one of the most important ceramic production centers in this area from 7th century BC toy he LateAntiquity. Especially 3rd
term excavations display the potential of this production. The most of the ceramic deposits uncovered during these excavations mostly belong to the Roman and Late Roman Periods. So, some of the mare in view of a natural hill in the modern town. One of them also has discovered underwater. In 2017, in the Çanak Bay, which is located in west of Foça, numerous ceramic pieces were seen on these abedand so that, this area was included in 2018 excavation program. As a result of a short term research conducted in a week, numerous ceramics, slag sand damaged production samples which are uncovered under the seabed in depth 0-1.30m. have shown us that of this area was used for ceramic dumpster between 2nd-4th Centuries
AD.

This article challenges the concept of “Hellenization” – the claim that Greek culture, religion, and language was imposed on non-Greeks – by examining cross-cultural interactions and transformations in commercial settlements.  More specifically, the article investigates the linguistic practices of multicultural harbor towns by examining a series of 6th and 5th century BCE inscriptions from a commercial settlement in Spain and some Roman-period texts that comment on linguistic practices in Iberia and Gaul.  The inscriptions suggest that scripts, loan words, and literacy were markers of neither ethnicity nor “Hellenization.” On the contrary, they highlight the cooperation between Greek and Iberian traders and the partnerships that formed in conducting commerce.  Literary sources offer a radically different view of interactions among ethnic groups in commercial settlements.  They cast the relationship between Greeks and non-Greeks in Iberia and Gaul as a civilizing one, with Greeks introducing Greek culture and teaching indigenous populations to speak and write in Greek.  This trope, I argue, is commonplace in Roman-period texts and reflects a deliberately Roman imperialist perspective rather than a Greek practice.

This study is a research aiming to prepare a handbook for the users of traditional buildings to do maintenance and simple repairs for their houses. The architectural protected site in Yeni Foça, whose texture is maintained to a great extend was chosen for this study. The study is composed of five sections. In the introduction chapter, the main aim and content of the study, the methodology of the study, the sources and the limitations of the study are discussed. mIn the second section, general information on Yeni Foça is given. Detailed explanation on the city fabric, architectural characteristics construction techniques, and structural condition are given generally. In the third section, detailed analysis results an the facade and facade elements are given, supported by statistical data, plans and typologies. The fourth and fifth sections compose the handbook. In the fourth section general information is given aiming to create an empathy between the user and the town. In addition, recommendations on how to use the handbook and things to be careful about when dealing with Traditional buildings are listed here. The fifth section includes various problems seen in the windows, shutters and doors of Yeni Foça, the facade, window, shutter, door typologies of the buildings are given supported by various statistical data. Apart from this, recommendations for these problems are given. Each element that forms the subject of the thesis are evaluated one by one and definitions, simple repair and new element proposals are given supported by 1/1, 1/2, 1/5, 1/10 ve 1/20 scale drawings. It also includes maintenance proposals. The definition and importance of maintenance, the points to consider during for maintenance are given. Bu çalışma, geleneksel konutların kullanıcıları tarafından bakımlarının ve basit onarımlarının yapılabilmesi için bir el kitabı hazırlanmasına yönelik bir araştırmadır. Araştırma alanı olarak dokusunun çok az bozulmuş olduğu saptanan İzmir Yeni Foça'nın Mimari Koruma Alanı seçilmiştir Çalışma beş bölümden oluşmaktadır. Giriş bölümünde, çalışmanın amaç ve içeriği, kullanılan metod ve kaynaklar, çalışmayı sınırlayan faktörlerle birlikte ortaya konmuştur.İkinci bölümde, Yeni Foça ile ilgili genel bilgiler verilmiştir. Genel olarak kasabanın genel dokusu, mimari karakteristikleri, inşa teknikleri ve binaların yapısal durumu, istatiksel datalar, planlar ve tipolojiler ile desteklenerek anlatılmıştır. The seal bone scanning and 3D modelling was carried out to visualise the morphological differences between these two species. The mandible (mandibula), the shoulder blade (scapulae), the upper arm (humerus), bones of the lower arm (radius/ulna), metacarpal I (metacarpus), hip bone (coxae), the thigh bone (femora), os cruris of the lower leg (tibia/fibula = os cruris), metatarsal I (metatarsus) from left side of an adult, male harp seal and ringed seal were scanned.
The results from this study show the great potential that involve the 3D model use within osteology. The morphological differences between harp seal and ringed seal are clearly visible in 3D models. The open access of 3D models include a considerable scope for different modifications with this material, thereby facilitating zooarchaeological research, as well as serving for educational purposes.
