Phokaia

Antik yerleşimlerin Roma Dönemi tabakalarında, kırmızı renkte kilden ve kırmızı renkte parlak astarlı, kalıpta ya da çarkta yapılmış, kabartmalı bezemeli ya da bezemesiz seramikler sıklıkla bulunmaktadır. İlk yapılan çalışmalarda Arezzo ya da Arretine Seramiği olarak anılmış, fakat sonraları diğer antik yerleşimlerde de sıklıkla bulunduğu saptanarak, ilerleyen çalışmalarda Terra Sigillata olarak isimlendirilmiştir. Günümüzde, Geç Roma Dönemi’nde üretilen kırmızı renkli seramikler için Kırmızı Astarlı terimi yaygınlaşmıştır. Son yıllarda ilerleyen çalışmalarla, Roma Dönemi’nin bu karakteristik seramikleri Anadolu’daki çok sayıda yerleşimde bulunmuş ve yayınlanmıştır. Antik Batı Anadolu’nun önemli Ion kentlerinden biri olan Phokaia, bu karakteristik seramik grubunun üretim merkezlerinden biridir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Phokaia Sahil Yolu kazısında bulunan Kırmızı Astarlı seramiklerini tipolojik ve kronolojik olarak incelemek ve kil analizlerini sunmaktır.
In the Roman Period layers of the ancient settlements, there are often ceramics with or without relief decoration, made of red clay and bright red slip, made in molds or on wheels. In the first studies, it was referred to as Arezzo or Arretine Ceramics, but it was later determined that it was frequently found in other ancient settlements and was named Terra Sigillata in later studies. Today, the term Red Slip has become widespread for red colored ceramics produced in the Late Roman Period. With the progress of studies in recent years, these characteristic ceramics of the Roman Period have been found and published in many settlements in Anatolia. Phokaia, one of the important Ionian cities of ancient Western Anatolia, is one of the production centers of this characteristic ceramic group. The aim of this study is to examine the Red Slip Ware found in the the Coastal Road excavation of Phokaia, typologically and chronologically, and to present their clay analysis.

Foça ya da antik dönemdeki adıyla Phokaia, Ege Denizinde, doğal bir liman olarak Antik Çağda ve Orta Çağda deniz ticaret yollarının önemi duraklarından ve Arkaik dönemin en büyük kentlerinden birisidir. İyon, Pers, Roma, Bizans ve Osmanlı medeniyetlerini barındırmış; uzun sure Ceneviz hâkimiyetinde kalmış bu kentte Arkeolojik açıdan Anadolu’daki diğer kentler kadar detaylı çalışmalar yapılmamıştır. Buna karşılık günümüzde önemli bir kazı ve restorasyon projesinin odağı olmaya başlamıştır.
Bu nedenle; bu çalışmada Foça’nın tarihi, geçmişte ve günümüzde gerçekleştirilen arkeolojik kazılar ve araştırmalar ile Antik çağlardan günümüze kadar gelebilen Foça Kalesi, kalenin geçirdiği onarımlar ve restorasyonu inceleme konusu yapılmıştır.
Çalışmanın ana konusu Foça Kalesi Antik yarımadasındaki Surlar ve Beş Kapılar olarak adlandırılan bölümüdür.

Anadolu, Asya ile Avrupa arasındaki bir köprü olarak sayılınca, Sardeis bu köprünün başkentlerinden biri olarak tanıtılabilmektedir. Daha dağru bir tabirle, Sardeis sadece Asya ile Avrupa arasındaki köprünün başkenti değil, Coğrafi konumundan dolayı Doğu ve Batı Anadolu’nun kültürel geleneksellerinin birleşmiş özelliklerini gösteren Antik Dönem’deki yerleşimlerden biri sayılabilmektedir. Bundan hareketle Sardeis’te kültürün en önemli parçalarından biri olarak, ölü gömme geleneği de hem Doğu Anadolu hem de Batı Anadolu ve daha geniş bir ölçekle hem Ortadoğu hem de Doğu Avrupa’nın özelliklerini taşımaktadır. Sözü geçen konu farklı dönemler ve Sardeis’teki farklı uygarlıkların egemenliğine bağlı olarak, değişik gösterilerle Sardeis ve çevresindeki yerleşimlerde kazılıp kendi özelliklerini göstermektedir. Dolayısıyla bu makalede Sardeis’teki bütün mezar tipleri sınıflandırılıp, onların hangi kültürlerin ölü gömme türlerini içerdiği araştırılmaktadır.

In this study, Phocaean red slip vessels found during the excavation of A3 protected area located in Izmir/Foca will be discussed. In the city, located in a ceramic dumpster area excavated in 2004 and for the first time as a group distinguished by Waagé in the Agora report prepared in 1933, the Late Roman C ceramics were found. Even if Robinson, who examined the findings of Athenian Agora, suggests a different name, the name preferred in the scientific community for these ceramics is Late Roman C, or Phocaean Red Slip Vessels. Phocaean Red Slip Vessels in the Mediterranean basin, particularly in Western Anatolia and coast of Greece, are developed parallel to the production technique of African Red Slips. These vessels arise as a new set of red-slipped pottery. This group was evaluated, though uncertainly, as Phocaean property and the artifacts were generally dated between 4th and 7th century AD. The general literature information of these artifacts was verified at the end of this study. However, it was observed that Phocaean red-sliped vessels began to be produced at an earlier period. In addition, two more new types that could not be located in Hayes typology were also produced in Phocaea.

Abstract: Letoon is located in the west of Eşen’s river within
the borders of Kumluova in Fethiye district of Muğla province of Turkey. Excavations of Letoon were launched in the
1960s, and a structure assumed to be a monastery dating
back to the Early Eastern Roman Period was found out by
Professor R. Martin in excavations carried out in the context
of Early Eastern Roman researches. Excavation works performed recently in this area are supportive of this view. This
study aimed to undertake the preliminary appraisal study of
red slip pottery which dated back to the Late Roman – Early
Eastern Roman Period and were discovered in excavations
of Letoon sanctuary center. These ceramics evaluated to be
under the category of service ware were obtained in large
quantities. Upon the preliminary appraisal of these containers, forms appertaining to African Red Slip, Phocaean Red
Slip, Cypriot Red Slip and Sagalassos Red Slip Ware subgroups were identified. Besides studies on these forms, studies also on red slip pottery which are considered to be locally
produced are still underway. Most of evaluated ceramics in
the Letoon sanctuary center where traces of civilian settlement are quite rare must be resulting from commercial activities of the monastery. In light of excavation findings, it was
deduced that Letoon Monastery established in the early VIth
century A.D. was operational until the first half of the VIIth
century A.D. It was discerned that the time when the monastery was operational coincided with the period of usage of the
most of red slip pottery of the Late Roman – Early Eastern
Roman Period which were analyzed in this study. With this
study aim to introduce the red slip pottery which are including
different forms from Letoon’s sanctuary and to give the information about variety and density of them in this period

The third term of archaeological excavations carried out in the township of Foca, in Izmir province, Turkey revealed what appears to be a pottery workshops and dumping grounds that are capable of illuminating the ceramic industry of the city, the pottery forms produced, and the chronologies of both. The discovery of the Hellenistic Period Ceramic Workshop Sector near the Persian Cemetery Monument is particularly significant because amphora production of the ancient city of Phocaea was previously unknown, even though workshops and pottery dumps ranging from the Archaic to the Byzantine periods have been discovered at various locations throughout the city center. Maydos Kilisetepe Höyüğü, yaklaşık 200x180 metre büyüklüğü ve 33 metrelik rakımı ile Gelibolu Yarımadası'nın en büyük höyüklerinden biri olma özelliğine sahiptir. 2010 yılında Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart Üniversitesi öğretim üyesi Prof. Dr. Göksel SAZCI tarafından başlatılan bilimsel kazılar günümüzde halen devam etmektedir. Yapılan arkeolojik çalışmalar sonucunda elde edilen verilere göre yerleşimin M.Ö. 3. Binden günümüze kadar iskân gördüğü tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışmada Maydos Kilisetepe Höyüğü'nde 2010-2020 kazı sezonları içerisinde ortaya çıkarılmış olan, Geometrik dönemden Arkaik Döneme kadar tarihlendirilen oval planlı yapılar mimari açıdan incelenmiş; Batı Anadolu, Kuzey Ege Adaları, Karadeniz'e kıyısı olan bölgeler ve Anakara Yunanistan ile olan mimari benzerlikleri ve farklılıkları tespit edilerek, Maydos Kilisetepe Höyüğü'nün kolonizasyon içerisindeki yeri değerlendirilmiştir. Yerleşime ait mimari buluntular doğrultusunda, Geometrik Dönemden Arkaik Döneme yaşamış olan bölge halkının mimari tercihleri ve bu mimariye ait özellikler araştırılmıştır.

Summary - The Phocaean colony of Massalia introduced its own coinage around 525 BC. The “heavy” drachm, a silver coin weighing around 3.7 g and depicting the head of Artemis and a lion walking right, was probably struck during the 3rd century. In this work, all the main features of this particular denomination such as chronology, finds and mint organization are analysed and discussed. A die link study, based on a corpus of 90 surviving specimens, enables to estimate the original number of dies and therefore to make some hypotheses about the output of the Massalian mint. The reasons for the introduction of this denomination are compared with other cases and discussed.

Résumé - La colonie phocéenne de Massalia introduisit sa propre monnaie vers 525 av. J.-C. La drachme « lourde », une monnaie d’argent pesant environ 3,7 g, avec les représentations d’une tête d’Artémis et d’un lion marchant à droite, fut probablement frappée durant le iiie siècle. Dans cette étude, nous analyserons les principales caractéristiques de cette dénomination, comme la chronologie, les découvertes et l’organisation de l’atelier. Une étude des liaisons de coins, basée sur un corpus de 90 exemplaires qu’il a été possible de recenser, permet d’estimer la quantité originale de coins et de formuler des hypothèses quant à la production de l’atelier de Massalia. Par comparaison avec d’autres cas, les possibles raisons de l’introduction de cette dénomination sont discutées.

Phokaia (günümüzde İzmir-Eski Foça), Batı Anadolu’nun önemli kıyı yerleşimlerinden biridir ve tarih boyunca seramik üretimi ile dikkat çekmektedir; 1989 yılından itibaren yapılan araştırma ve kazılardan gelen verilerle, kentin önemli bir seramik üretim merkezi olduğu kanıtlanmıştır. Kentin çeşitli alanlarında yapılan kazılarda Kırmızı Astarlı seramikleri ve fırınlarına ait kalıntılar saptanmıştır. Phokaia Kırmızı Astarlı Seramikleri (PRSW-Phocaean Red Slip Ware) üzerine ilk çalışma Waage tarafından yapılmış; 1960’lardaki araştırmalarda Langlotz tarafından Form 3 C tipi olarak anılmıştır. 1972’de Hayes tarafından LRC (Late Roman C / Geç Roma C) ve 1980’de Phocaea Kırmızı Astarlı grubu olarak isimlendirilmiştir. Phokaia Sahil Yolu’nda yapılan kazılarda çok fazla miktarda Kırmızı Astarlı seramikler bulunmuştur ve büyük olasılıkla bu alanın gerisindeki atölyelere ait olmalıdırlar. Malzemeler, alandaki buluntu yerlerine göre yapılan gruplar dikkate alınarak çizilmiş ve fotoğraflanmıştır. Malzemelerin kil analizleri uzmanlar tarafından yapılmış ve sonuçları sunulmuştur.

ÖZET
Yunan dünyasında ele geçen palmiye sütun başlıkları kendine has formuyla dikkat çekmektedir. Bu başlık, genel olarak Kalathos, ters çan ya da çanak şeklinde bir formun etrafına palmiye yaprakları sarılmış şekilde görünmektedir. Anıtsal mimaride Arkaik dönemden Hellenistik döneme kadar oldukça seyrek olarak, Roma döneminde ise daha yaygın kullanıldığı görülmektedir. Yunan dünyasında Arkaik dönemde, Arkades (Girit), Phokaia ve Delphi’deki Klazomenai ile Massalia hazine binalarında kullanılanlar olmak üzere dört yerde karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu başlıklara benzeyen en erken örnekler ve en yaygın olanları Mısır’da karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Mısır palmiye sütun başlıklarının ilk taş örnekleri MÖ 3. binin ortalarında ortaya çıkmaktadır. Ancak en yoğun olarak MÖ 2. binin ortalarında kullanılmıştır. Üzerinde küçük bir abakusu olan bu başlıklarda, orta damarı oldukça belirgin olan yapraklar yukarıdan kavis yapacak şekilde bir eğimle sarkarlar. Bu yapraklar aşağıda hepsi kurdele ile bağlanmış bir buket gibi görünmektedir. Başlığın bitiminde yani kurdelenin alt kısımda üçlü sarılan halkalar dikkat çekmektedir. Mısır Palmiye sütun başlıkları Yunan örneklerine göre daha zarif bir görünüm sergilemektedir. Mısır’da bu başlıklar, bazen diğer sütun çeşitleriyle karışık olarak bazen de kendi başına yapı girişlerinde, kutsal içerikli yapıların avlu ve stoalarında simgesel bir mimari eleman olarak kullanılmıştır. Yunan dünyasında ise palmiye ile ilgili sütun başlığı veya benzer tarzdaki ilk bilgiler, MÖ 7. yüzyıldan itibaren antik kaynaklardan alınmaktadır. Günümüze ulaşmayan bu eserler, mimaride kullanılan bir elemandan çok, tek başına duran bir sütun başlığı veya sütun gövdeli üst kısmı palmiye ağacı şeklinde simgesel anlamlar yüklenerek kullanıldığı anlaşılmaktadır. Ele geçen ilk somut örnekler, Girit-Arkades’te bulunan ve kendine özgü formuyla dikkat çeken palmiye başlığı, Yunan dünyasındaki taştan yapılmış sütun başlıkları arasındaki en erken örnektir. Kalathosu andıran gövdenin üst bölümü konveks şeklinde olup, 26 yapraklı başlığın aşağıdan yukarıya doğru sarkan yaprak uçları genişleyerek şekil almıştır. Bu düzenin altında yaprakları toplar şeklinde görülen sarmal bir halka bulunmaktadır. Yaprakların ortasından dikey olarak inen merkezi damar şeklinde görülen sarmal bir halka bulunmaktadır. Devşirme malzeme olarak kullanılan bu abakuslu başlık küçük olması sebebiyle, muhtemelen ya bir adak ya da cenaze töreninde simgesel bir amaç için kullanılmıştır. Başlığın Mısır ve Girit etkisi hakkında birtakım tartışmalar bulunmaktadır. Diğer örnekler, Delphi’deki Massalia (Marsilya) ve Klazomenai (Urla) hazine binalarında kullanılan palmiye başlıkları Phokaia’daki örneğe benzemektedir. Klazomenai başlığı, Massalia başlığına göre yaprak sayısı daha fazla ve bu sebeple de daha büyük yapılmıştır. Massalia’nın Phokaia’nın kolonisi olması ve Klazomenai’nin denizden Phokaia’ya yakın olmasının özellikle bu konu açısından aralarında yakın bir ilişkinin olması gerekmektedir. Bu başlıklarda, diğer palmiye tipi başlıklardan ayıran en önemli özellik, merkezi (orta) damarının ortadan kalkmış olmasıdır. Başlıkların in antis planlı hazine binalarının ön tarafında kullanıldıkları tahmin edilmektedir. Bu başlıkların Arkades ve Phokaia örneklerinden sonra yapıldığı tahmin edilmektedir. Phokaia palmiye başlığının yapraklarındaki merkezi damarın belirginliğiyle dikkat çekmektedir. Bu yönüyle özellikle Mısır ve Arkades örneklerine çok benzemektedir. 12 kıvrım yapan yaprağa sahiptir. Başlık, Athena tapınağının ilk yapım evresinde, pronaosta, muhtemelen Tanrıça Athena ile bağlantılı zaferi simgeleyen mimari bir eleman olarak kullanılmıştır. Gözenekli tüf taşından yapılan başlık abakussuz kullanılmıştır. MÖ 6. yüzyılın başlarında yapılan Phokaia palmiye başlığı, bu tarihle, Hellen dünyasındaki mimaride kullanılan en erken taş palmiye başlık olarak değerlendirilmelidir. Phokaia başlığı, MÖ 7. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren Phokaia’nın Naukratis’le (Mısır) yaptığı yoğun ticari ilişkiler sonucunda gelmiş olabileceği görüşü önem kazanmaktadır.


ZUSAMMENFASSUNG
Das Palmenkapitell in Phokaia und seine Herkunft
In der griechischen Welt ist das Palmenkapitell mit seiner eigentümlichen Form
recht auffälig. Es tritt zumeist Kalathos-förmig, also eher in einer Glocken- oder
Schalenform nach oben auf und ist von Palmenblättern umgeben. In der monumentalen Architektur ist es von der archaischen bis zur hellenistischen Zeit selten anzutreffen, wogegen es sich in der römischen Zeit eher bemerkbar macht, in der es ziemlich weitverbreitet gewesen war. Das Palmenkapitell tritt in der hellenistischen Welt während der archaischen Zeit in vier Orten wie Arkades (Kreta), Phokaia (Foça) und in den Schatzhäusern Clazomenai (Urla) und Massalia (Marseille) in Delphi auf. Die frühesten Beispiele, die den genannten Besipielen am meisten ähneln sowie die, die weiter verbreitet waren, tauchen in Ägypten auf. Den ersten äyptischen Beispielen der Palmenkapitelle aus Stein begegnen wir Mitte 3000 v.Chr. Jedoch wurden diese größtenteils Mitte 2000 v. Chr. verwendet. Auf diesen Palmenkapitellen mit kleinem Abakus, hängen die Blätter von oben mit recht flagranter mittlerer Ader bogenförmig herunter. Weiter unten bilden alle Blätter zusammen einen Strauß, umgebunden mit einer Schleife. Im Schlusstein des Kapitells, also im unteren Teil dieser Schleife, fallen Ringe im Dreier-Wickel auf. Im Vergleich zu ihren hellenisten Beispielen treten die äyptischen Palmenkapitelle mit mehr Eleganz hervor. In Ägypten wurden diese Kapitelle teils mit verschiedenen Arten von Säulen gemischt, teils einzeln an Eingängen oder teilweise in Höfen oder Stoas von Sakralbauten als symbolisches architektonisches Element benutzt. In der griechischen Welt sind die ersten Angaben oder weitere Einblicke über das Palmenkapitell ab dem 7. Jahrhundert. v.Chr. aus antiken Quellen zu entnehmen. Es hat sich herausgestellt, dass diese Werke, die leider unsere Zeit nicht Kapitell oder als ein Schaft in Palmenform verwendet wurden, denen wiederum eine symbolisierende Bedeuteung beigemessen wurde. Das erste konkrete Beispiel, das in Kreta-Arkades aufgefundene Palmenkapitell mit seiner eigentümlichen
Form, stellt das früheste Beispiel für die Steinkapitelle der griechischen Welt
dar. Der obere Teil des Schafts in Konvexform, der uns an ein Kalathos erinnert,
erhielt seine Form durch die 26 Blätter am Kapitell, indem die Blattspitzen von
unten nach oben sich aufbreitend hochsteigen und wieder herunterhängen. Ein
spiralförmiger Ring, der sich unmittelbar unter dieser Ordnung befindet, fügt diese
Blätter zusammen. Dadurch dass dieses Kapitell mit Abakus recht klein war und
als Einsammelmaterial benutzt wurde, ist es anzunehmen, dass es entweder als
Gelübde oder als Symbol bei einer Beerdigung diente. Der äyptische oder kretanische Einfluss steht wiederum zur Debatte. Die anderen Beispiele wie die Kapitelle in den Schatzhäusern Massalia (Marseille) und Clazomenai (Urla) in Delphi, sehen sich mit dem in Phokaia recht ähnlich aus. Das Clazomenai-Palmenkapitell erscheint durch die Mehrzahl seiner Blätter größer als das Massalia-Kapitell. Dadurch dass Massalia eines der Kolonien von Phokaia war und dass Clazomenai und Phokaia sich über den Seeweg näher lagen, weist wiederum auf die Ähnlichkeit und auf eine enge Beziehung hin. Die genannten Kapitelle unterscheiden sich von weiteren Arten der Palmenkapitelle größtenteils durch die aufgehobene mittlere Blattader. Man vermutet, dass diese Kapitelle am Eingang der Schatzhäuser im in antis–Plan angewendet worden sind, wobei auch die Wahrscheinlichkeit besteht, dass die Palmenkapitelle in Phokaia und Arkades die Vorgänger dieser Kapitelle gewesen sind. Des Weiteren fallen die flagranten mittleren Blattadern des Phokaia- Palmenkapitells recht deutlich auf, was die Ähnlichkeit mit seinen Beispielen in Ägypten und Arkades hervorhebt. Das Phokaia-Kapitell hat 12 Palmenblätter. Es wurde in der ersten Bauphase des Athena Tempels als symbolisierendes architektonisches Element am Pronaos angewendet, was vermutlich einen Triumph Athenas andeutet. Das Kapitell aus Tuffstein mit Poren wurde ohne Abakus verwendet.  Das Phokaia Palmenkapitell, das in den Anfängen des 6. Jahrhundert v.Chr. erstellt wurde, sollte mit seiner Datierung als das früheste Beispiel in der griechischen Architektur für Palmenkapitelle aus Stein bewertet werden. Die Annahme, dass das Phokaia-Palmenkapitell ab der zweiten Hälfte des 7. Jahrhunderts v.Chr. unter dem Einfluss des regen Handels zwischen Phokaia und Naucratis (Ägypten) sich bemerkbar machte, ist von großer Bedeutung.

Kadıkalesi/Anaia Kazısı’nda günümüze kadar yapılan çalışmalar sırasında karışık tabakalar içinde Geç Roma Kırmızı Astarlı seramikleri az sayıda amorf olarak bulunmuştur. 2013 kazı sezonunda kalenin güney eteklerinde yapılan Prehistorik dönemleri araştırmak için yapılan kazı çalışmaları sırasında, tümlenebilir parçalarında olduğu bir grup Geç Roma Kırmızı Astarlı seramikleri bulunmuştur. Bu seramikler içerisinde sığ ve yayvan gövdeli, ince cidarlı tabaklar bulunmaktadır. Yüksek ağız kenarları kasnak şeklinde olan bu tabaklarda,  yayvan halka kaide görülmektedir. Geç Roma Döneminde oldukça yaygın olarak üretilen Roma Dönemi kırmızı astarlı sigillata kaplarının imitasyonu olan bu seramikler, geniş bir coğrafyada dağılım göstermektedirler. Kadıkalesi/Anaia buluntusu bu gruba ait seramikler Afrika Kırmızı Astarlı ve Foça Kırmızı Astarlı seramikleri içinde yer almaktadırlar. Seramiklerin form ve tipolojik özellikleri, İS. 5. yüzyıl sonu-7. yüzyılın başlarına ait olduklarını göstermektedir.

                    Late Roman Red Slip Pottery From Kadıkalesi/Anaia
ABSTRACT
In the excavations in Kadıkalesi/Anaia, some amorphous Late Roman Red Slip potters has been unearthed in different layers. In 2012 some pieces of the same kind of pottery were found in the south-eastern part of the fortress where excavations on Prehistoric past were carried out. Among them there were thin, shallow and splayed pieces of plates. This plates with high rimmed  mouth, we find splayed circular  base. Those ceramics that were imitations of Roman sigillata red slip and they are found in quite a widespread geography. What were found in Kadıkalesi/Anaia are considered to belong to the group of African Red Slip and Phokaia Red Slip pottery. Form and typology of the pieces point out the dates late 5th – early 7th century.

We discover the biography, writing and the library of a figure of Genoese origin, Antonio Malaspina of Phokaia, about whom little was known: specifically, the information given by three letters from John Eugenikos (one of them, ep. 12, from 1439 or 1445); and that he owned Bremen manuscript b.23, while the Antonio Malaspina who annotated and partly copied Naples II.E.20 is a contemporary namesake. Our research has identified his hand in Par. gr. 1601, where he added in Greek a family chronicle that presents him as Orthodox, married since the end of 1446 to Helena Rhaoul-Palaiologina, a member of a branch of this family linked to Mytilene. The chronicle informs us that his family moved from Phokaia to Mytilene before 1452, no doubt due to the Turkish threat. In 1485, Malaspina was apparently living in Chios, undoubtedly once again as a result of the fall of Lesbos into Turkish hands. The re-editing of ep. 34 of John Eugenikos using the copy preserved in Vindob. Phil. gr. 183 now enables us to know that Malaspina was an archon and vicarius of Old Phokaia: in other words, that he carried out legal functions as the Genoese deputy governor. Malaspina likewise owned a legal codex, Vindob. Jur. gr. 7, in which he wrote a funerary epigram dedicated to an ancestor of his, a jurist like himself. Malaspina was, in conclusion, an archon, of Genoese descent but Hellenized, who worked for the Gattilusi in Phokaia, Orthodox and married a Byzantine noblewoman. His mother tongue and his cultural tongue were Greek, and he owned a small library of texts in that language.

The study titled “Detections on the Relations of Phocaea with Lydia in the Archaic Period” was prepared in the light of existing archaeological data, ancient and modern sources. The aim of the study is to reveal that Phocaea had relations with Lydia in the Archaic Period. Phocaea was one of the most important cities of Ionia during the Archaic Period. The city shows that it can be important for Lydia both in sea and road trade thanks to its geographical advantages (it is at the north-west end, which is the entrance to the Gulf of Smyrna, its two sheltered harbors and its proximity to the King’s Road connecting to the east). The state of Lydia, whose capital was Sardis, was in frequent wars and various relations with its neighbors, the Cimmerians, Assyrians, Medes and Persians. It had intense relations with the Ionian cities in the west, sometimes friendly and sometimes hostile. Therefore, the relations of Phocaea, an Ionian city, with Lydia constituted the main subject of the study. The main focus of these relations will be the periods of the last Lydian kings, Alyattes and Croesus. The writings of Herodotus about this have guided this issue. In the study, the historical process of Phocaea, its geographical advantages, overseas colonization activities, Lydia-Ionian relations and the cults and archaeological evidence in the city were discussed, and its possible connections with Lydia were tried to be reached. In this context, it will be tried to reach the conclusion by revealing the archaeological evidences that are thought to be effective in Lydia such as the use of early electron coins by Phocaea, the city wall, the cult of Cybele, the lydion found in the city, the tumulus, the rock tomb and the architectural terracotta found in the Temple of Athena.

It has become increasingly apparent over the last decades that cooking pottery played a considerable role as a trade commodity in ancient times, yet relatively little research has yet been done on this topic for its own sake. By taking a closer look at the cooking pottery found in Priene, a small city in southern Ionia re-founded in the middle of the 4 century BCE, we want to trace some of the broader developments within the cooking wares that were used over a period of roughly 300 years. The aim is not only to outline the general shapes that were in use over this period of time, but also to register if and how these shapes correlate with the different fabrics observed in Priene so far. Greek civilization and identity crystallized not when Greeks were close together but when they came to be far apart. It emerged during the Archaic period, when Greeks founded coastal city-states and trading stations in ever-widening horizons from the Ukraine to Spain. No center directed their diffusion, and the settlements ("colonies") originated from a multitude of mother cities. The "Greek center" was virtual, at sea, created as a back-ripple effect of cultural convergence following the physical divergence of independent settlements. "The shores of Greece are like hems stitched onto the lands of Barbarian peoples" (Cicero). Overall and regardless of distance, settlement practices became Greek in the making, and Greek communities far more resembled each other than any of their particular neighbors, such as the Etruscans, Iberians, Scythians, or Libyans. The contrast between "center and periphery" hardly mattered (all was peri-, "around), nor was a bipolar contrast with barbarians of much significance. Rather, not only did Greek civilization constitute a decentralized network, but it also emerged, so this book claims, owing to its network attributes.

Following a section on networks and history, it demonstrates its approach through case studies involving Rhodes, Sicily, the Far West (Phokaians), and the Phoenicians. The book concludes that it was a network dynamics of small worlds that rapidly foreshortened connectivity and multiplied links and hubs, thus allowing the flows of civilizational content and self-aware notions of identity to overlap and proliferate.

Drawing on Mediterranean studies, ancient history, archeology, and network theory (especially in physics and sociology), this book offers a novel approach to historical interpretation.

The third term of archaeological excavations carried out in the township of Foca, in Izmir province, Turkey revealed what appears to be a pottery workshops and dumping grounds that are capable of illuminating the ceramic industry of the city, the pottery forms produced, and the chronologies of both. The discovery of the Hellenistic Period Ceramic Workshop Sector near the Persian Cemetery Monument is particularly significant because amphora production of the ancient city of Phocaea was previously unknown, even though workshops and pottery dumps ranging from the Archaic to the Byzantine periods have been discovered at various locations throughout the city center. İzmir ili Foça ilçesi sınırları içerinde modern yerleşmenin altında kalan Phokaia antik kenti üzerine yürütülen çalışmalarda, mozaikli alan sektöründe 12 adet amphora parçası ele geçmiştir. Bu parçaların incelemelerimiz sonucunda 10 farklı amphoraya ait olduğu anlaşıldı. Bu amphoralar ise tipolojik olarak beş farklı grup altında ayrıldı. Tüm bu eserler irdelendiğinde Phokaia Mozaikler alanında bulunmuş olan amphoraların benzer örneklerden hareketle MÖ 1. yüzyıl sonları - MS. 4. aralığına tarihlendiği görülür. İrdelenen eserlerden özellikle Ege Yerel Amphoraları ve Kapitän II gruplarına dâhil olan örneklerin Phokaia kırmızı astarlı seramikleri ile olan yakın kil benzerliği dikkat çekicidir. Bu durum kentin amphora üretimiyle de uğraştığını göstermesi açısından kayda değerdir. Çalışmada olası ticaret ağı da irdelenmiş ve kentin özellikle Ege-Akdeniz hattında etkin olduğu gözlenmiştir.
