Elea - Velia

Lo studio prende in esame le rotte dei Focei nel Mediterraneo arcaico dalla madrepatria fino a Tartesso, rotte che erano segnate da una serie di scali, fra i quali vi era il promontorio di Agropoli. Ma dopo la conquista persiana di Focea e la battaglia di Alalia questo sistema venne meno, ed i Focei fuggiaschi ripararono nel sito di Elea-Velia fondando una nuova colonia, non essendo più disponibile il sito di Agropoli.

The study examines the routes of the Phocaeans in the archaic Mediterranean, from the motherland to Tartesso, routes that were marked by a series of ports, among which was the promontory of Agropoli. But after the Persian conquest of Phocaea and the Battle of Alalia this system broke down, and Phocaeans fugitives fled the site of Elea-Velia founding a new colony, as it was no longer available the site of Agropoli.

Summary - The Phocaean colony of Massalia introduced its own coinage around 525 BC. The “heavy” drachm, a silver coin weighing around 3.7 g and depicting the head of Artemis and a lion walking right, was probably struck during the 3rd century. In this work, all the main features of this particular denomination such as chronology, finds and mint organization are analysed and discussed. A die link study, based on a corpus of 90 surviving specimens, enables to estimate the original number of dies and therefore to make some hypotheses about the output of the Massalian mint. The reasons for the introduction of this denomination are compared with other cases and discussed.

Résumé - La colonie phocéenne de Massalia introduisit sa propre monnaie vers 525 av. J.-C. La drachme « lourde », une monnaie d’argent pesant environ 3,7 g, avec les représentations d’une tête d’Artémis et d’un lion marchant à droite, fut probablement frappée durant le iiie siècle. Dans cette étude, nous analyserons les principales caractéristiques de cette dénomination, comme la chronologie, les découvertes et l’organisation de l’atelier. Une étude des liaisons de coins, basée sur un corpus de 90 exemplaires qu’il a été possible de recenser, permet d’estimer la quantité originale de coins et de formuler des hypothèses quant à la production de l’atelier de Massalia. Par comparaison avec d’autres cas, les possibles raisons de l’introduction de cette dénomination sont discutées.

This paper presents a catalogue of the 45 coins found at the temple area of Scoglietto (Alberese – Grosseto) during the 2010 excavation campaign. Chronologically the finds span a long period, from the 2nd-1st century BC to the 6th century AD, providing numismatic evidence of a longer occupation of the site compared to the results of the first campaign. Excavation of lower levels brought to light coins of the first imperial period, a roman republican as and a bronze coin of the last series of Elea/Velia. The majority of coins belongs to the second half of the 3rd century and the 4th century AD. Particularly interesting is a bronze coin of Justinian I, that provides further evidence of the probable moment of abandonment of the site. A group of four modern coins, minted in Florence and Siena in 16th-17th century, bear witness of a later occupation, when several fortified towers were built along the coast as protection from pirate raids.

Una dramma rarissima (ultimo ventennio VI sec. a.C.), con la leggenda 𐌅ΕΛΗ(τέων), conferma che il nome della città, Velia, era originariamente indigeno e che sulle terrazze dello sperone roccioso abitasse un grosso nucleo di indigeni italico-enotri. Velia era dapprima detta Ὺέλη dai Greci (Erodoto I, 167), divenne poi definitivamente Ἐλέα (Platone, Soph., 1).

The word for “glass,” ὕαλος, and its related adjective ὑάλινος, found in Revelation at 4:6; 15:2a, b; 21:18, 21, are printed in that form in current NT editions without indication of a variant. The variant form ὑελ- however is found in some late MSS and is also seen to occur in P47, discovered in the twentieth century. This paper argues the case for restoring the ὑελ- form to the text. The argument depends not only on the MS evidence but on the history of the forms, the witness of the ancient grammarians and the vernacular character of the language of Revelation. The case raises the question whether NT text critics have been sufficiently aware of new evidence and ready to reassess old decisions.

L’utilizzo degli applicativi GIS in ambito archeologico è divenuto negli ultimi anni più frequente. L’Archeologia, infatti, si configura come una disciplina spaziale, nella quale i dati raccolti necessitano di una collocazione geografica, ed è proprio la possibilità data dai software GIS di archiviare, integrare, consultare e comparare tali informazioni a spingere sempre di più verso un utilizzo sistematico di tali applicativi.

Il contributo propone un inquadramento della ricerca in Magna Grecia, nella fase dell'unificazione dello Stato italiano, analizzando le attività ed i temi essenziali dell'archeologia tedesca ed italiana. Le indagini al Tempio ionico di Locri, condotte da E. Petersen e P. Orsi, e le ricerche topografiche di W. Schleuning (allievo di F. von Duhn) a Velia, rappresentano due casi di studio stimolanti per riflettere sulle metodologie e gli approcci degli studiosi italiani e tedeschi nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento in Italia meridionale.

The project presents the results of a comparative study of the spatial structures of sanctuaries in ancient Lucania with the aim of reconstructing ritual processes. The coastal regions of Lucania were among the first places in Italy to be colonised by Greeks. Therefore, the interaction between Greeks and indigenous inhabitants reaches back to the 7th/6th centuries BC. Nevertheless, by the later 4th/3rd centuries BC an interesting situation had developed due to a decrease in the influence of Greek colonies and an increase in the influence of Italic and Roman material culture regarded the spatial orgaisation of sanctuaries and cult places.

Vortrag im Rahmen des 16. Treffens der AG Etrusker und Italiker zum Thema "Grenzen als Kontaktzonen und Kommunikationsräume in der etruskisch-italischen Welt" 01.03. - 02.03.2019 in Leipzig.

Wie ein Kranz liegen die befestigten Siedlungen Castelluccio, Moio della Civitella, Punta della Capinia und Torricelli um die griechische Kolonie Elea. Alle diese Siedlungen besitzen umlaufende Stadtbefestigungen aus akkuratem Quadermauerwerk und gleichartige Kammertore. Doch handelt es sich bei diesen Siedlungen um indigene Orte oder sind es griechische Befestigungen des Territoriums von Elea? Wo verlief die Grenze der griechischen Kolonie? Wo begann das Territorium der indigenen Stämme?

Auch in der Nähe von Metapont, Siris, Massalia oder Ampurias gibt es indigene Siedlungen fast in Sichtweite der griechischen Stadt.

Der Vortrag wirft sicherlich vor allem Fragen auf, die man nicht unbedingt schlüssig beantworten kann. Jedoch bietet das Thema sicher Diskussionsstoff zur Tagung.
