Poetry and Painting

This essay studies the relationship between visual arts (painting) and verbal art (poetry) that colonial Mexican writer Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz incorporated in her literary production. It also examines the writer’s metapoetic reflection about the Baroque topic of deceiving appearances. Departing from a brief examination of the features of the intellectual visual world in 17th-century Mexico, this essay proposes to distinguish between poems that speak of a portrait theory (both, pictorial and poetic), its application to the making of women’s portraits and the topic of “amistad amorosa” (a feminine courtly love) as well as the use of satire. The conclusion comments the options faced by the poet-painter who intended to make women’s portraits: to produce an imperfect copy of the portrayed woman or to just satisfy him/herself with the contemplation of her beauty.

Idealized sexuality is a prominent theme in the poetry and paintings of Rasikapriyā.  It’s author Keśavadāsa uses this subject as means for illuminating his theory on the concept of love underlined with the religious philosophy of Vaiṣṇavism. Keśavadāsa emphasizes on śṛṅgāra rasa, the erotic sentiment based on the emotion of love, as the prime rasa of Rasikapriyā. Through the aid of theory of śṛṅgāra rasa he brings to forefront discussions on sexuality. He identifies Kṛṣṇa as the romantic hero, the nāyaka – the god who is also a lover. And he builds an index of three hundred and sixty nāyikās, representing female sexuality in almost all its aspects.

The concept of love in Rasikapriyā can be understood in three categories – firstly as the poetic theory of śṛṅgāra rasa, which is an aesthetic experience; secondly as kamaśāstra i.e. the knowledge of the arts of lovemaking; and thirdly as devotional bhakti philosophy, which is a spiritual experience. Keśavadāsa blends these three aspects of love into a beautiful rendition in his poetry. Through these aspects Keśavadāsa provides a symbolic expression to an idealized realm of a loving relationship between the idealized nāyaka and nāyikā. Keśavadāsa portrays them not only as youthful, handsome and renouncing, but more importantly adept in the arts of lovemaking, emphasizing their sexuality.

What Rasikapriyā represents has the vividness or convincing quality of appearing to belong to reality, though not imitatively reproducing the actual world of experience or theory. This symbolism when translated into the Rājput miniature paintings, presents a plethora of images with a vivid visual portrayal of love and sexuality. They render the poetry of Rasikapriyā into a visual medium, which transform nature into an ideal imaginary world expressing a deep-rooted philosophy of Vaiṣṇavism. Their art metaphorically renders the ideas of bhakti, which stresses upon the realization of the pure element of consciousness i.e. the self in a man. This process is about experiencing human-life in its fullest extent and engaging in a passionate and ceaseless love for the Lord, which is as pure and obsessive as natural love between two humans.

Not unlike the much more famous ‘Jewish heretic hermeneutics’ studied by Susan Handelman, such as those of Freud, Derrida, Bloom and others, painter and philosopher Norman Raeben has formulated his own new method for artistic creation embedded in rabbinic hermeneutics. We hereby present a comprehensive – although introductory – analysis of his creative as well as teaching methods. We also briefly focus on his influence on the poetics of his former student Bob Dylan, offering some preliminary clues for a better comprehension of the interrelations between the creative processes and theories of both authors.

El Renacimiento trajo consigo multitud de reformas inspiradas por el Humanismo. Entre ellas, el sustancial cambio en una preceptiva del arte que abandona progresivamente el estricto dictamen alegórico y moralista de la estética cristiana medieval para adentrarse en el territorio inexplorado de las nuevas doctrinas poetológicas y retóricas, merced a la lectura renacentista de los filósofos y gramáticos grecolatinos. Se configura así una primeriza teoría del arte moderno sobre una serie de tópicos humanísticos de viejo cuño y raigambre antigua. Uno de los lugares comunes más destacados a este respecto fue el tópico horaciano ut pictura poesis que inspiró, entre los poetas y artistas del Renacimiento y Barroco, una preceptiva común en torno a la mímesis, el decoro, los medios de expresión y los modos imitativos. No fueron los principales maestros españoles ajenos a esta fiebre de hermanar sistemáticamente, durante el Siglo de Oro, las artes más allá de sus posibilidades y límites. De ahí que en esta propuesta se explore la huella dejada por la preceptiva ut pictura poesis como doctrina poética en la España de los Austrias, con objeto de ampliar nuestro conocimiento acerca de los albores de la teoría del arte en la Edad Moderna.

The Renaissance brought along with itself a multitude of reforms inspired by Humanism. Among them, the substantial change in the artistic precepts. Artists and poets progressively abandoned the strict allegorical and moralistic normative of medieval Christian aesthetics and went deep into the unexplored territory of a new poetic and rhetorical doctrine. Thanks to the Renaissance reading of Greco-Latin philosophers and grammarians, it is configured a first theory of modern art on a series of humanistic topics based on the classic Hellenistic aesthetics. One of the most prominent common places in this sense was the horatian ut pictura poesis topic, which inspired to the poets and artists in the Renaissance and Baroque a shared normative ruled by the mimesis, decorum, codes and imitative modes. The Spanish Golden Age writers and artists were not unaware of this fever, consisting in the systematical sisterhood of the arts beyond their possibilities and limits. Taking into account these issues, this paper analyzes the trace left by the poetic doctrine ut pictura poesis in the Habsburg Spain, in order to broaden our knowledge about the dawn of art theory in the Modern Age.

La Heráldica como ciencia auxiliar de la Historia no se funda, en puridad, hasta bien entrada la Baja Edad Media con motivo de la fijación de la lengua de los blasones. Tal acontecimiento ha quedado recogido en la Comedieta de Ponza del marqués de Santillana, en cuyas coplas percibimos la presencia de tres descripciones de escudos de armas blasonados conforme al código heráldico introducido por Jean Courtois a principios del siglo XV. Sin embargo, al ser adaptado el procedimiento en cuestión al contexto literario, Santillana propicia, en calidad de poeta heraldo, la aparición de un nuevo género ecfrástico: el blasón poético. En este artículo trataremos de identificar los referentes de los escudos nobiliarios descritos en la Comedieta de Ponza y discutiremos el significado ideológico y político que encierran los emblemas al interpretarlos en función del convulso marco histórico en el que se enmarca la obra. Asimismo, ponderaremos la índole del blasón poético como variante de la écfrasis y su condición como manifestación temprana de la doctrina ut pictura poesis, poniendo el énfasis en la forma en que esta miniatura poética refleja los ideales estilísticos del autor.     

As auxiliary science to History, Heraldry is not founded, strictly speaking, until the late Middle Ages due to the strengthening of the language of blazon. Such an event has been recorded in Little Comedy of Ponza by the Marquis of Santillana. We find three descriptions of coats of arms in its pages, emblazoned according to the heraldic code introduced by Jean Courtois in the early 15th Century. However, by adapting the procedure itself to the literary context, Santillana contributed, as herald poet, to the emergence of a new ekphrastic genre: the poetic blazon. This article will try to locate the references for the nobility badges described in Little Comedy of Ponza and will discuss the ideological and political meaning within the coats of arms as well, in order to interpret them considering the period of upheaval in which the work is framed. In addition, we will analyse the nature of poetic blazon as a sort of ekphrasis and its status as an early manifestation of the doctrine ut pictura poesis, emphasizing how this poetic miniature reflects the stylistic ideals held by the author.

Son los teóricos neoaristotélicos italianos quienes consolidan en la segunda mitad del siglo xvi la doctrina de las unidades dramáticas. Los autores españoles, sin embargo, proceden a una redefinición de los preceptos clásicos, a fin de proporcionar a la dramaturgia unos parámetros teóricos novedosos y una dimensión social mayor acorde a los nuevos tiempos. Nace así la comedia nueva del Siglo de Oro, apuesta teatral que aboga por la mezcla de géneros y asimismo por una mayor libertad creativa con respecto a las rígidas unidades dramáticas. Con todo, el nuevo modelo teatral español no supone tanto un rechazo de los principios y mecanismos poéticos introducidos por Aristóteles, cuanto una reformulación de la doctrina neoaristotélica procedente de Italia. La mímesis, la unidad de la obra o el decoro se mantienen como pilares poéticos. La comedia nueva comulga, por tanto, con el espíritu neoaristotélico de la época, pero desde una óptica diferente a la preceptiva italiana. La influencia del Estagirita se aprecia claramente en la renovación y actualización de la anagnórisis aristotélica, al convertir los dramaturgos áureos la pintura en un recurso de agnición característico de la comedia siglodorista. Tal aspecto será analizado en este artículo en razón del vivo diálogo que palabras e imágenes mantienen en el Barroco bajo la directriz ut pictura poesis.

Leo Spitzer (1887-1960), romanista e hispanista austriaco, publicó entre 1951 y 1955 una serie de artículos en cuyas páginas asentó las bases del comparatismo interartístico. Entre ellos destacan “Garcilaso, Third Eclogue, Lines 265-271” (1952) y “Lope de Vega’s «Al Triunfo de Judit»” (1954), en los cuales Spitzer enuncia dos conceptos clave para el estudio de la “pintura verbal” en el contexto de la crítica
literaria posterior. Si bien los comparatistas localizan la definición moderna de écfrasis como “transposition d’art” en “The «Ode on a Grecian Urn,» or Content vs. Metagrammar” (1955), el crítico ya había esbozado una primera definición en un trabajo anterior dedicado a un soneto lopesco. Pero la importancia de Spitzer
para la historia de la Literatura comparada con las artes plásticas no se limita a la mera atribución de la definición moderna de écfrasis, como han venido expresando los especialistas. En razón del método fundamentado en la aplicación del “círculo filológico”, pondera Spitzer los rasgos más destacados del pictorialismo literario, que Jean H. Hagstrum popularizará años más tarde. Dicha reflexión viene motivada
por la estrecha relación observada entre la poesía bucólica de Garcilaso y la doctrina ut pictura poesis, crucial para entender el desarrollo de las artes en el Siglo de Oro. Así pues, este artículo pretende rendir homenaje a uno de los romanistas más destacados del siglo XX, con motivo del examen de los elementos comparatistas introducidos por Spitzer en estos dos estudios emblemáticos dedicados a Garcilaso y Lope.

Leo Spitzer (1887-1960), Austrian Romanist and Hispanist, published between 1951 and 1955 a series of articles whose pages laid the foundations of Comparative Literature and Interart Studies. Among them, we may point out “Garcilaso, Third Eclogue, 265-271 Lines” (1952) and “Lope de Vega’s «Al Triunfo de Judit»” (1954), in
which Spitzer stated two key concepts for the study of the “word-painting” in the context of the subsequent Literary criticism. While scholars located the modern definition of ekphrasis as “transposition d’art” in “The «Ode on a Grecian Urn,» or Content vs. Metagrammar” (1955), the Austrian critic had already sketched a first definition in a previous article devoted to a Lope’s sonnet. But the importance of Spitzer for the Comparative Literature and Interart Studies history is not limited, as it has been expressed by the scholars, to the bare attribution of the modern ekphrasis definition. As a result of the analyses based on the “philological circle” method, Spitzer ponders the salient features of literary Pictorialism, popularized by Jean H. Hagstrum afterwards. Such reflection is motivated by the close relationship observed between
Garcilaso’s pastoral poetry and the doctrine ut pictura poesis, which is crucial for understanding the development of the Arts in the Spanish Golden Age. Thus, this article aims to pay tribute to one of the most esteemed Romanists from the last century by means of the approach to those comparatist elements introduced by Spitzer through his two landmark studies on Garcilaso and Lope.

Tout en voulant dépasser les limites qui définissent les conventions de leurs média, deux (post-) surréalistes belges – un poète et un peintre – se croisent sans le savoir dans leurs démarches qui mettent en question, d’une part, la dimension figurative (en sens graphique) de l’écriture et, de l’autre part, la lisibilité des images.

Très conscient de la précarité arbitraire du signe linguistique, Henri Michaux abandonne progressivement l’écriture linéaire. Il commence à «rédiger» ses poèmes en utilisant des calligrammes et des idéogrammes fictifs, pour crayonner le croquis d’une poétique qui joue dans l’espace figuratif plus libre d’une graphie et d’une morphosyntaxe inventées. Ses mots, réduits à des lignes qui dansent sur la page, à des pures traces des mouvements intérieurs, s’enchaînent après une logique qui quitte le régime verbal en faveur d’une grâce purement visuelle. Symétriquement, René Magritte se lance dans le geste envers : si dans le parcours poétique de Michaux le mot devient, peu à peu, image, Magritte n’hésite pas à remplacer les objets peints par des noms, des syntagmes, des phrases chargées (ou, par contre, dépourvues) de sens dans le contexte visuel qui les entourent.

De telles œuvres de Magritte et de Michaux, avec leur double nature poétique et plastique, sont nées sous le signe d’un refus catégorique de la mono-médialité. Leurs différents traitements de l’intermédialité prennent, ainsi, la structure croisée d’un chiasme qui se prête à des analyses très fertiles, à la fois sémiotiques et herméneutiques.

En este trabajo se analiza la contribución de la crítica hispánica al estudio del Siglo de Oro en el marco del comparatismo interartístico. Desde la publicación de Temas de Barroco de Emilio Orozco Díaz en 1947, el tópico ut pictura poesis ha sido uno de los motivos tradicionales bajo el cual se han venido estudiando numerosas obras del Renacimiento y Barroco a la luz de la relación entre literatura y pintura, así como de la iluminación recíproca de las artes tan característica de la época. Sin embargo, la aproximación a los textos áureos desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar plantea una problemática metodológica que en este artículo abordaremos para intentar delimitar y discernir entre los diferentes ámbitos, ramas y alcances de la propia disciplina en cuestión.

This paper analyses the contribution of Hispanic criticism on the study of the Spanish Golden Age under the Interartistic Comparatism. Since the publication of Temas del Barroco by Emilio Orozco Díaz in 1947, the topic ut pictura poesis has been one of the traditional themes under which many Renaissance and Baroque works have been studied, as a result of the relationship between Literature and Painting, as well as the mutual relation of the arts in that time. However, the approach to the Golden Age texts from an interdisciplinary perspective raises a methodological problem that this article will discuss in order to achieve the identification and distinction among the different areas, branches and scopes of the discipline itself.

Ut pictura poesis positions itself at the interdisciplinary confluence of not only poetry and painting, but also to a large extent, rhetoric and aesthetics, epistemology and philosophy, psychology and other related social sciences. The broad historical span of different critics and their ideas in this presentation will allow for a careful chronological examination on the evolution of text-image relationship, particularly attentive to its social, political, and ideological contexts. As shown in this archaeological section, sister arts tradition started from a discussion about relation or relatedness between different types of media as pointing out the physical similarities in a family photograph. The division between arts then arising in the Renaissance witnessed the development of paragone as a cultural phase, when the enterprise of differentiation into categories or classes fosters the purification and distinction of media. The transformation from structural parallel that stresses kinship and harmony to paragonal debate that emphasises difference and exceptionality, soon into the extreme delimitation of temporal and spatial arts, deepens the formal or empirical concern into philosophical and aesthetic fundamentals to the implications of a chain of binary oppositions. To sidestep the dualism and dichotomous thinking directed by Lessing’s exceptionalism of each form, proto-modernists turned toward a union of arts and media based on their creative partnership and cross-fertilised affinity as a more direct engagement with Horace’s dogma. The multimedia notion of Gesamtkunstwerk and its function as a force of unification boost a growing investigation to conceptualise the interface between the linguistic and the pictorial, which thereby demonstrates the potential for a further introduction of intermediality, a systematically theoretical and methodological extension of ut pictura poesis in greater depth.

An approach to the history of the ekphrasis in the Spanish epic poetry is carried out in this paper. Questions arise when we regard the considerable presence of descriptions of art within the genre, bearing in mind that the figure itself is not collected by the Renaissance Rhetoric. One reason which explains such circumstance is that the Spanish heroic poetry responds to an imitation of classical and Renaissance epic models, in whose stanzas we find a huge number of ekphrasis. Nevertheless, many aspects of the figure in the context of Spanish epic poetry go beyond the scope of imitatio, because they have to do with the peculiar political context of the Spanish Empire during the Renaissance and Baroque. Thus, we will examine in these pages the main features of the ekphrasis in contrast to its models, its narratological functions and its political reading.

La censura de la «pintura verbal» elaborada por Cide Hamete Benengeli de la casa de don Diego de Miranda (II, Cap. XVIII) introduce una problemática en torno a la descripción que en este artículo será objeto de análisis. La consideración de las descripciones amplificadas como «frías digresiones» y su consecuente censura por parte del «traductor» se ve refutada posteriormente con el esbozo de un bodegón literario con motivo del banquete de las bodas de Camacho (II, Cap. XX). Así pues, en estas páginas ponderaremos si la tensión observada entre la censura y licencia con respecto al quehacer descriptivo de Cide Hamete Benengeli responde a una sátira cervantina, cuyo objeto son las descripciones amplificadas del canon retórico aurisecular; o bien al contrario, encierra un sentido en virtud del cual nos es factible interpretar la descripción como un recurso al servicio no tanto de la preceptiva retórica cuanto de la expresión realista de la ficción novelesca. Finalmente, discutiremos si el enfrentamiento entre el silencio impuesto por el «traductor» y la voluntad expresiva del «autor arábigo» bien puede ser reflejo de uno de los grandes temas de Don Quijote: la dialéctica entre licencia y censura de la libertad creativa en la España postridentina.

The censorship of word-painting of Don Diego de Miranda’s house (II, Ch. XVIII) drawn up by Cide Hamete introduces an issue about the literary description which will be analyzed in this paper. Cervantine conception of the amplified descriptions as «frías digresiones” and its subsequent censorship by the «traductor» is opposed to the painting of Camacho’s wedding reception (II, Chap. XX) in terms of a literary still life. Considering this contradiction, we will weigh whether the tension observed on the censorship and license of Cide Hamete’s word-painting responds to a cervantine satirical aim, whose object is the amplified descriptions according to the Renaissance rhetorical canon; or on the contrary, if it encloses an original regard on the description as a poetical device to sound out the realistic aesthetics within the cervantine fiction. Finally, we will discuss whether the opposition between the silence imposed by the “traductor” and the literary will of the “autor arábigo” could reflect one of the main Don Quixote’s themes: the dialectic between license and censorship of the creative freedom in post-Tridentine Spain.

El proceso de deconstrucción de la teoría literaria ha significado un cambio de orientación en el seno de la crítica. Ha puesto en jaque la efectividad de la hermenéutica como metodología filológica. En este sentido, es paradigmática la forma en que el comparatismo interartístico opera como una herramienta productiva a la hora de neutralizar la inestabilidad de ciertas composiciones poéticas que, como objeto de estudio, parecen confirmar las tesis posmodernas. Para debatir la cuestión planteada procedemos, pues, a la lectura de un encomio pictórico de Pedro Espinosa desde el comparatismo interartístico con el fin de justificar, precisamente, su efectividad de cara a una mejor comprensión del significado de los textos literarios. 

The process of deconstruction of Literary theory has meant a shift within criticism. It has been questioned the effectiveness of Hermeneutics as philological methodology. In that respect, it is paradigmatic how the interartistic comparison operates as a productive tool to neutralize the instability of some poetic compositions which seem to confirm the postmodern thesis. To discuss the issue, this paper proposes the reading of a pictorial encomium by Pedro Espinosa from the interartistic comparison scope, in order to justify precisely its effectiveness in regards to a better understanding of the meaning of literary works.

La silva “Si cuanto fue posible en lo imposible,” que Lope incluyó en los Diálogos de pintura (1633) de Vincencio Carducho, ejemplifica perfectamente un recurso típico en la escritura lopesca: la hipotiposis, modo de alcanzar la virtud retórica de la viveza gráfica (enárgeia). El análisis de los cuatro grupos de imágenes sobre los que Lope construye la silva muestra qué estrategias empleó el Fénix para alcanzar la enárgeia y cómo la relacionaba con otras aspiraciones características de su obra, como la relación entre pintura y literatura.
