Ut Pictura Poesis

The American painter Cy Twombly is an artist who is greatly interested in poetry and especially in Mallarmé. This article examines the relationship between the poet and the painter. Using an interdisciplinary approach it tries to show how both of them use a similar technique which allows them to produce works which lie half-way between both arts.

This essay studies the relationship between visual arts (painting) and verbal art (poetry) that colonial Mexican writer Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz incorporated in her literary production. It also examines the writer’s metapoetic reflection about the Baroque topic of deceiving appearances. Departing from a brief examination of the features of the intellectual visual world in 17th-century Mexico, this essay proposes to distinguish between poems that speak of a portrait theory (both, pictorial and poetic), its application to the making of women’s portraits and the topic of “amistad amorosa” (a feminine courtly love) as well as the use of satire. The conclusion comments the options faced by the poet-painter who intended to make women’s portraits: to produce an imperfect copy of the portrayed woman or to just satisfy him/herself with the contemplation of her beauty.

At the heart of this article is a fairly straightforward assertion: that literature has a trans-verbal level at which it affects us as a work of art. Hence discussing a novel means bringing to the fore not only its overt narrative function but also its covert artistic function: a consideration of the work in light of its aesthetic intention. Following the phenomenological traditions of Roman Ingarden and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, I argue that aesthetic intention does not determine the significance of the art object, which is presumed to be dynamic within a spectrum of meanings. Rather, aesthetic intention takes into account the circumstance of the novel having been actuated into form by an " artistic gesture. " This " gesture " is not physical: it is a metaphorical motion referring to the artist's actuation of an aesthetic intention using one or another medium to give an artwork its perceivable form. In painting, this " gesture " can sometimes be traced through a work's visible brushstrokes or formal composition, but in literature such " gestures " can appear beyond the literal text and remain invisible even while they are experienced in the literary work. The conception of such a " gesture " is meant to incorporate the insights of literary and aesthetic theory, along with poststructuralism, in a critique that allows for structural analysis to also pursue a reconstituted significance. What appears below is more a program of the problem than a full treatment of its implications – a stretching of the canvas, so to speak. But I believe that the articulation of this kernel has a value in itself even if the full unraveling of the subject is yet to come.

Horace first drew a link between ornament and monstrosity in Ars poetica, characterising as misbegotten any attempts of ornament to claim a voice and agency of its own. Sixteenth-century artists embraced monstrous ornament, called grottesche, to do just what Horace feared; scrambling conventions and rupturing settled argument. More than an aesthetic choice, it was a means to grapple with the contests of meaning unloosed in early modern Europe.

This essay argues that Giambattista Vico's 1725 study, The New Science, expanded on these debates, creating a theoretical armature for ornament's broader cultural agency.
Vico's insights into the deployment of 'monstrous' ornament as a means to grapple with and shape radical change are especially pertinent today, as we see in the powerful poetic monsters created by such artists as Gonkar Gyatso, Yinka Shonibare, and Hew Locke.

La historia conceptual del tópico ut pictura poesis que ocupa este volumen se divide en tres partes, precedidas de la presente INTRODUCCIÓN y proseguidas de las páginas que cierran el trabajo a modo de CONCLUSIÓN. El primer capítulo, dedicado a la ANTIGÜEDAD CLÁSICA, está dividido en seis apartados que abarcan la historia del tópico desde la primera comparación del lírico griego Simónides de Ceos hasta los inicios del neoplatonismo de Plotino, que marcan en la historia de la estética el fin de la Edad Antigua y el inicio del Medievo. Este capítulo se inaugura con el propósito de contextualizar la comparación poético-pictórica de mayor antigüedad registrada en la cultura occidental, atribuida a Simónides por Plutarco e interpretada como símbolo de la transformación de una concepción oral de la poesía hacia una concepción escrita.

Seguidamente se hace hincapié en las comparaciones de la literatura y las artes plásticas de Platón y Aristóteles formuladas en sus tratados a la luz de los conceptos de mimesis, imago y ethos. Una vez comentadas las teorías interartísticas esgrimidas por los dos filósofos, se dará paso a una revisión de los conceptos estéticos y las clasificaciones de las artes discutidas por los gramáticos alejandrinos y de cuya síntesis emana la filosofía ecléctica de Cicerón. Más tarde, se realizará una aproximación al tratado Ars Poetica de Horacio, prestando especial atención al sentido de la máxima latina que da nombre al tópico ut pictura poesis y su vínculo con el concepto retórico de la enargeia o evidentia. También en este capítulo se ilustrarán las teorías interartísticas de Plutarco, Pseudo-Longino, Dion Crisóstomo y Luciano de Samósata, acompañadas por el estudio de la poética implícita en la literatura ecfrástica de los Filóstratos y Calístrato . Para cerrar los apartados de la sección se examinará brevemente los postulados estéticos más destacados de la filosofía de inspiración platónica desarrollada por Plotino, cuyo pensamiento marca el cambio de época con el inicio de la transición hacia el mundo medieval.
En el segundo capítulo se revisan las aportaciones a la comparación de literatura y artes plásticas de mayor peso en la EDAD MEDIA Y MODERNA, completando así la historia del tópico en nueve apartados.

Se inicia la sección con un comentario acerca de la teoría cristiana lumínica y su ligazón con el concepto de imago, de suma importancia para la comprensión de la comparación interartística en la Alta Edad Media que se consolida a la sombra de la filosofía mística de San Agustín. A continuación, se debatirá la conexión entre literatura y pintura establecida por los principales escolásticos medievales, realizando para ello un itinerario por las correspondencias señaladas por autores tales como Bernardo de Claraval o Guillermo Durando, pasando por el concepto de color rhetoricus presente en la Poetria Nova de Godofredo de Vinsauf, hasta terminar el recorrido con la reinterpretación del adagio de Horacio realizada por Cennino Cennini en el siglo XIV, que anticipa el parangón renacentista de poesía y pintura avivado por los tratados emblemáticos de Leon Battista Alberti (De Pictura, 1436) y Leonardo Da Vinci (Trattato della pittura, c. 1490).

Se examinarán acto seguido los principales fundamentos de la doctrina ut pictura poesis en el Renacimiento. En tales apartados se reúnen las aportaciones más destacadas de los humanistas italianos (Dolce, Lomazzo, Varchi, Mazzoni). También se aborda en este punto la figura de Gregorio Comanini y su tratado Il Figino, imprescindible para entender el desarrollo de la iluminación recíproca de las artes como doctrina estética en el siglo XVII y su proyección en el venidero pensamiento ilustrado. En contraste con las teorías de Comanini, se analizan las aportaciones relevantes acerca de la teoría interartística procedentes de la pluma de los poetólogos españoles más destacados del Siglo de Oro, tomando como referente ineludible la discusión mantenida en torno a la “pintura verbal” por los protagonistas del conocido diálogo Philosophía antigua poética de Pinciano. A su vez, se dedican diversos comentarios a la emblemática de Alciato y la iconología de Ripa por el modo en que estas favorecen la iluminación recíproca de las artes. En relación con las ilustraciones de la Gerusalemme Liberata de Torquato Tasso por parte de los pintores del siglo XVII, se centra la atención sobre la formulación de la teoría de la hermandad de las artes, justificada por la aplicación pictórica de la preceptiva de las tres unidades dramáticas derivada de la poética clasicista italiana y francesa. Los dos últimos apartados que clausuran esta Historia conceptual del tópico ut pictura poesis, desde la Antigüedad grecolatina hasta finales de la Edad Moderna, afrontan las principales teorías interartísticas del siglo XVIII, cuyos máximos representantes son Edmund Burke y Gotthold Ephraim Lessing.

Como APÉNDICE de este recorrido historiográfico por la trayectoria del tópico ut pictura poesis se incluye un tercer capítulo centrado en el análisis del lugar común como praxis literaria en las distintas etapas del clasicismo. Consta de cinco apartados dedicados al estudio del tópico horaciano como motivo de composición y fuente fecunda de fenómenos y recursos vinculados a la imagen literaria: las pinturas verbales de escudos por parte de Homero y Hesíodo; la concepción de la poesía como monumento artístico en la Era augusta; el significado pictorialista del mito de Filomela y Progne en Ovidio y Aquiles Tacio; la recurrencia de la écfrasis y las alegorías en los romans medievales; así como el estudio de la concepción moderna de la écfrasis adelantada y desarrollada por Miguel de Cervantes en Don Quijote con la que se cerrará el trabajo.

Mais do que tratar de um autor ou de uma obra, este livro ocupa-se de um
conceito, de uma ideia que perpassa autores, obras, gêneros e artes. Tem por objetivo considerar diacronicamente práticas imagéticas verbais e não verbais, ou seja, representações discursivas e iconográficas, ocorridas na Antiguidade clássica, atestando por conseguinte as possíveis homologias entre estas – quando e se existentes. Logo, pictura loquens (pintura que fala) refere-se à prática discursiva que oferece aos olhos da mente visualidades, pintura imaterial. E poesis tacens (poesia silente) opera a prática plástico-pictórica cuja principal característica é ser muda, mas sem nunca deixar de flertar com o discurso, já que podemos observá-la de acordo com as categorias poéticas, assim como fizeram Simônides, Aristóteles, Horácio, Cícero, Quintiliano, Plutarco, os Filóstratos, Calístrato, entre outros.

Cette étude est la première partie d’un travail qui essaie de reconstituer par une approche à la fois historique et systématique les principes de la production et du jugement des œuvres d’art, qui ont constitué l’arrière-plan théorique de la peinture dès la Renaissance à l’âge classique. Les clefs de lecture nous sont fournies d’une part par les rapports établis entre peinture, poésie et rhétorique dans les théories de l’Ut poesis pictura et de l’Ut rhetorica pictura, qui sous-tendent les définitions de la nature fondamentale, du contenu et des fins de la peinture ainsi que le modèle de l’artiste idéal, et d’autre part par la conception de l’histoire qui sous-tend ce système théorique et l’oriente comme une recherche de la perfection. Pour comprendre les questions que les artistes et les théoriciens se sont posées à l’âge classique, il faut retracer le cheminement qu’elles ont parcouru. Un double découpage dans le temps et l’espace s’avère donc nécessaire : notre investigation part de l’essor de la théorie humaniste de la peinture à Florence au XVème siècle et suivra son développement et infléchissement à Venise et à Rome au XVIème siècle à travers le maniérisme, jusqu’au néo-classicisme du XVIIème siècle. Après l’examen préliminaire des sources antiques de la théorie humaniste de la peinture et des conditions qui ont régi sa constitution sous le signe de l’Ut poesis pictura et de l’Ut rhetorica pictura, dans cette première partie sont analysés les fondements théoriques de la production artistique et du jugement critique à la Renaissance, tels qu’ils ont été formulés par Leon Battista Alberti et Léonard de Vinci.

La doctrine classique de l’ut pictura poesis opère une comparaison entre les arts dont résulte une assimilation du visible au lisible ; sans tenir compte des moyens spécifiques qui sont les leurs, elle attribue à la peinture et à la poésie les mêmes fonctions discursives et narratives. C’est ainsi que l’âge classique place au sommet de la hiérarchie des genres la peinture d’histoire, qui se donne explicitement pour but d’illustrer les récits bibliques, historiques et mythologiques. Même s’il subit au XVIIIe siècle les assauts de Lessing qui, dans son Laocoon sous-titré Des frontières respectives de la peinture et de la poésie (1766), entend dissocier les arts du temps des arts de l’espace, ce paradigme exerce encore une forte influence sur l’art et sa critique à la fin du XIXe siècle. En effet, la production picturale salonnière est encore dominée – hiérarchiquement, si ce n’est numériquement – par la peinture d’histoire, qui illustre la littérature, au sens où elle représente des sujets qui ont eu d’abord une existence verbale avant de revêtir une incarnation picturale.

Aussi Huysmans pense-t-il toujours la peinture à travers les catégories de la littérature : utilisant le concept classique de convenance, il évalue la peinture d’histoire à l’aune de sa conformité à un modèle littéraire. S’il s’oppose à la doctrine académique – telle qu’elle est enseignée à l’École des Beaux-arts et perpétuée par les concours et les Salons –, il ne remet donc pas en cause le paradigme de l’ut pictura poesis, qui en est pourtant l’un des fondements. Mais il utilise ce retour aux sources comme un outil critique, profitant de toute discordance entre le texte et l’image pour créer un décalage burlesque qui invalide le sérieux de la représentation.

Délestant l’imitation de son défaut ontologique, Aristote la définit comme une tendance nouvelle favorisant l’apprentissage puisque, dès l’enfance, les hommes étant naturellement enclins à imiter, ils acquièrent leurs premières connaissances par le biais de l’imitation. La doctrine de l’ut pictura poesis orientera nos propos qui, de fait, en proposeront une nouvelle approche : si la littérature et la peinture sont comparables dans
leur vocation de vouloir imiter le monde, ou en tout cas le représenter,
la littérature et la peinture partagent également une tendance à imiter ses multiples représentations, voire à s’imiter, c’est-à-dire se regarder l’une l’autre. Dans la problématique qui est la nôtre, cela aboutit à l’élaboration d’une poétique où la peinture, au centre du texte littéraire, serait également le miroir où il se réfléchit. Notre lecture consistera d’abord à mettre en valeur les enjeux théoriques de l’ut pictura poesis pour ensuite faire le point sur une rhétorique de l’image dont on verrait les effets sur le texte et qui permettrait enfin de définir, en se servant des concepts opératoires de l’intertextualité, une poétique de l’« interpicturalité ».

Las operaciones de apropiación-traducción de las estéticas europeas que despliegan los poetas modernistas latinoamericanos en la encrucijada de fines del siglo XIX dan lugar a la fundación del verso moderno en español. Esta hipótesis de trabajo –orientadora de un proyecto de investigación de largo aliento- habilita una relectura de la poética de Rubén Darío: nos preguntamos, en una primera instancia, por las premisas para el traductor modelo que surgen de algunos de sus textos programáticos referidos a la “tarea”; pero el abordaje apunta, sobre a todo, a las modalidades que asume la praxis de la traducción en tanto base de la renovación formal que Darío trae a su propia escritura en verso. Bajo estas condiciones, el prisma del traslado y la transculturación promete un singular acceso a “Sinfonía en gris mayor”, texto-laboratorio que también explora el fenómeno de la traducción como cruce de “series” en la trama del ritmo poético con el código musical y el pictórico.

This article examines the high altarpiece of St Stephen’s Church, the most representative pictorial series of Juan de Juanes’ mannerist period, from an iconological and contextual approach, taking into account affetti theories, sacred and secular rhetorical treatises, and the reformation that the lay clergy was undergoing in mid-16th century Valencia.

Acest articol analizează maniera în care asimilarea de către pictorul Nicolas Poussin  a conceptelor și principiilor tradițiilor Ut pictura poesis și Ut rhetorica pictura (i.e. relațiile de omologie pictură / poezie și pictură / retorică) i-a modelat concepția despre ceea ce el a denumit „a citi bine” (bien lire) și „a judeca bine” (bien juger) un tablou. Altfel spus, problema naturii activității receptiv-interpretative a spectatorului și, corelativ, a criteriilor de apreciere a reprezentării picturale. În primul rând, este vorba de implicațiile utilizării de către Poussin a analogiei lecturii, sugerată de faimoasa povață către Chantelou din scrisoarea din 28 aprilie 1639 despre tabloul „Mana”, precum și de alte epistole. Ce înseamnă pentru Poussin „a citi bine” o „frumoasă lucrare” sau un tablou? Lectura tabloului presupune doar simpla descifrare a subiectului și compararea sa cu textul istoriei pentru a-i verifica corectitudinea sau include o atitudine estetică și criterii specifice picturii – manieră, calități plastice, efecte vizuale? A face personajele dintr-un tablou „să vorbească” înseamnă a subordona contemplarea și aprecierea reprezentării picturale față de ordinea discursului retoric și criteriile istorico-literare sau aceste criterii aparțin totuși ordinii vizibilului? În al doilea rând, este vorba de natura și criteriile bunei judecăți a tablourilor sau aprecierea lor adecvată: sintagma „a judeca bine” trimite la o judecată pur intelectuală ce exclude desfătarea privirii sau, dimpotrivă, facultățile intelectuale și senzoriale acționează în mod inseparabil atunci când contemplăm și apreciem un tablou? A instituit Poussin rațiunea ca unică instanță de judecare a reprezentării picturale sau a făcut loc și plăcerii ochiului?

El Renacimiento trajo consigo multitud de reformas inspiradas por el Humanismo. Entre ellas, el sustancial cambio en una preceptiva del arte que abandona progresivamente el estricto dictamen alegórico y moralista de la estética cristiana medieval para adentrarse en el territorio inexplorado de las nuevas doctrinas poetológicas y retóricas, merced a la lectura renacentista de los filósofos y gramáticos grecolatinos. Se configura así una primeriza teoría del arte moderno sobre una serie de tópicos humanísticos de viejo cuño y raigambre antigua. Uno de los lugares comunes más destacados a este respecto fue el tópico horaciano ut pictura poesis que inspiró, entre los poetas y artistas del Renacimiento y Barroco, una preceptiva común en torno a la mímesis, el decoro, los medios de expresión y los modos imitativos. No fueron los principales maestros españoles ajenos a esta fiebre de hermanar sistemáticamente, durante el Siglo de Oro, las artes más allá de sus posibilidades y límites. De ahí que en esta propuesta se explore la huella dejada por la preceptiva ut pictura poesis como doctrina poética en la España de los Austrias, con objeto de ampliar nuestro conocimiento acerca de los albores de la teoría del arte en la Edad Moderna.

The Renaissance brought along with itself a multitude of reforms inspired by Humanism. Among them, the substantial change in the artistic precepts. Artists and poets progressively abandoned the strict allegorical and moralistic normative of medieval Christian aesthetics and went deep into the unexplored territory of a new poetic and rhetorical doctrine. Thanks to the Renaissance reading of Greco-Latin philosophers and grammarians, it is configured a first theory of modern art on a series of humanistic topics based on the classic Hellenistic aesthetics. One of the most prominent common places in this sense was the horatian ut pictura poesis topic, which inspired to the poets and artists in the Renaissance and Baroque a shared normative ruled by the mimesis, decorum, codes and imitative modes. The Spanish Golden Age writers and artists were not unaware of this fever, consisting in the systematical sisterhood of the arts beyond their possibilities and limits. Taking into account these issues, this paper analyzes the trace left by the poetic doctrine ut pictura poesis in the Habsburg Spain, in order to broaden our knowledge about the dawn of art theory in the Modern Age.

La Heráldica como ciencia auxiliar de la Historia no se funda, en puridad, hasta bien entrada la Baja Edad Media con motivo de la fijación de la lengua de los blasones. Tal acontecimiento ha quedado recogido en la Comedieta de Ponza del marqués de Santillana, en cuyas coplas percibimos la presencia de tres descripciones de escudos de armas blasonados conforme al código heráldico introducido por Jean Courtois a principios del siglo XV. Sin embargo, al ser adaptado el procedimiento en cuestión al contexto literario, Santillana propicia, en calidad de poeta heraldo, la aparición de un nuevo género ecfrástico: el blasón poético. En este artículo trataremos de identificar los referentes de los escudos nobiliarios descritos en la Comedieta de Ponza y discutiremos el significado ideológico y político que encierran los emblemas al interpretarlos en función del convulso marco histórico en el que se enmarca la obra. Asimismo, ponderaremos la índole del blasón poético como variante de la écfrasis y su condición como manifestación temprana de la doctrina ut pictura poesis, poniendo el énfasis en la forma en que esta miniatura poética refleja los ideales estilísticos del autor.     

As auxiliary science to History, Heraldry is not founded, strictly speaking, until the late Middle Ages due to the strengthening of the language of blazon. Such an event has been recorded in Little Comedy of Ponza by the Marquis of Santillana. We find three descriptions of coats of arms in its pages, emblazoned according to the heraldic code introduced by Jean Courtois in the early 15th Century. However, by adapting the procedure itself to the literary context, Santillana contributed, as herald poet, to the emergence of a new ekphrastic genre: the poetic blazon. This article will try to locate the references for the nobility badges described in Little Comedy of Ponza and will discuss the ideological and political meaning within the coats of arms as well, in order to interpret them considering the period of upheaval in which the work is framed. In addition, we will analyse the nature of poetic blazon as a sort of ekphrasis and its status as an early manifestation of the doctrine ut pictura poesis, emphasizing how this poetic miniature reflects the stylistic ideals held by the author.

“Incorporation” désigne d’abord le processus par lequel l’oeuvre elle-même “prend corps”. D’autre part, l’énonciation de l’oeuvre confère une corporalité à celui qui en est ce que D.Maingueneau appelle “le garant”, c’est-à-dire celui qui assume la responsabilité de l’énoncé . L’assimilation de l’organisation textuelle à un corps, premier volet de la définition, est évidemment un lieu commun qu’on trouve dans tous les manuels de rhétorique, qui se souviennent de Platon et de Phèdre. Le second aspect de l’incorporation, la corporalité du “garant” donc, est plus important pour la question soulevée ici. Comment concevoir le rapport entre la “garantie” qu’offre le texte - de sa crédibilité, de sa fiabilité, de son authenticité… - et la “corporalité”?

« L’art peint avec des mots, avec des sons, avec des couleurs, avec
des lignes, avec des formes ». Balzac pose ainsi le rapport entre les arts, soumettant ceux-ci à un principe commun : l’art peint, et donc écrire, ou décrire, c’est peindre avec des mots : ut pictura poesis. Dans la pratique littéraire, cette mixité des pratiques scripturales et picturales se conçoit dans la description, c’est-à-dire dans l’ambition d’une écriture qui se veut visuelle, avouant par là même sa dette par rapport à la peinture dès lors qu’il s’agit de donner à voir. Il est significatif à cet égard que le portrait, sur lequel nous avons choisi de faire porter notre étude, renvoie indifféremment aux deux arts, la littérature et la peinture. Les nombreuses références à des « portraits-tableaux » dans À la recherche du temps perdu témoignent bien, par ailleurs, des goûts de l’amateur d’art qu’était Proust. La Recherche cite plus de cent trente peintres qui retracent l’histoire de l’art et du portrait en particulier, témoignant bien de la portée encyclopédique du récit proustien même si elle n’en constitue pas l’essentiel. Quant à Elstir, peintre inventé par Proust, le texte lui prête une évolution artistique parfaitement en accord avec l’histoire de l’art de la deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle et qui ressemble au parcours de plusieurs peintres de cette époque : les trois « manières » d’Elstir – la manière mythologique, celle où il avait subi l’influence du Japon, et enfin la peinture de l’« impression » – correspondent à une synthèse de la peinture des années 1850-1910. Tout se passe enfin comme si la volonté de nous donner à voir contaminait le système de représentation de La Recherche, si bien que les portraits scripturaux deviennent des portraits picturaux. Il en résulte une « picturalisation » de l’univers romanesque et des êtres qui le peuplent, dont nous verrons un exemple à travers les portraits d’Albertine celle-ci devenant à cet égard un sujet pictural. Notre propos consistera à mettre en valeur les composantes de cette peinture et sa manière d’affleurer dans le texte en étudiant le rôle de l’analogie dans la mise en place du portrait, l’écriture à partir de laquelle il s’élabore, les thèmes, et enfin les esthétiques qu’il convoque.

Der musikalische Ton hat einen direkten Zugang zur Seele. Er findet da sofort einen Widerklang, da der Mensch "die Musik hat in sich selbst", heißt es in Kandinskys 1912 publizierter Schrift 'Über das Geistige in der Kunst'. "Jeder­ mann weiß, daß Gelb, Orange und Rot Ideen der Freude, des Reichtums, einflößen und darstellen" (Delacroix). Diese zwei Zitate zeigen die tiefe Ver­wandtschaft der Künste überhaupt und der Musik und Malerei insbesondere. Auf dieser auffallenden Verwandtschaft hat sich sicher der Gedanke Goethes konstruiert, daß die Malerei ihren Generalbaß erhalten muß.

The  different  artistic  disciplines  have  not  always maintained  an  amicable  relation  or  the same status. In  antiquity,  the Horatian  formula  “Ut Pictura  Poesis”  (10 B.C.)  triggered  a debate which compared them and aimed at answering the question of whether one art was superior to the
others  or  not.  This  debate  has  been  going  on  throughout  time  up  to  the  present  day.  This dissertation  focuses  on  the Romantic  answer  to  this  question:  for  Romantics,  all  the  different artistic  disciplines  shared  the  same  aim –
the  expression  of  feelings– and  sprang  from  the  same
mother –imagination  and  subjectivity.  Furthermore,  during  the  Romantic  Period,  their  alliance in the  so-called  “Sister  Arts”  supports  the  idea  of  arts  cooperating  with  each other  for  the achievement  of  their  common goal.  That  is  how  ekphrasis,  the  core of  this essay,  is  going  to  be
presented  as  the  tool  that  Romantics  used  to  link  literature  and  visual  arts.  In  this  dissertation “ekphrasis” is defined as a text, in prose or verse, written under the inspiration of a piece of visual art  which  does  not  necessarily  give  a  detailed  description  of  its  visual  referent,  but  adds
information about it, builds a story about it, or corrects it. The alliance of writing with painting or with sculpting will be shown clearly in the analysis of five ekphrastic texts and their relation with their  visual  referent.  The  texts  chosen  for  this  analysis  belong  to  some  of  the  most  important
exponents of the Romantic English Literature.

UT PICTURA DECADENTIA: HUYSMANS COMO CRÍTICO DE ARTE. DE LOS IMPRESIONISTAS AL CRISTO DE GRÜNEWALD

El presente trabajo estudia las diversas etapas de la crítica pictórica de Joris Karl Huysmans: Impresionista, Simbolista y Católica. En cada una de éstas se reformula el modo en el que la palabra escrita lee a la pintura; paradójicamente, en el momento en que el lenguaje pictórico comienza a autonomizarse de la literatura, Huysmans retorna, para interpretar los cuadros de Degas, Redon o Cézanne, el viejo tópico horaciano del ut pictura poesis. En tal interpretación ocupa un lugar central la alegoría: procedimiento de lectura que permite asignarle un sentido a la pintura, pero también a una Tercera República que se considera, precisamente, decadente. Tanto la allégorie hié- ratique de Moreau como la symbolique du moyen âge, son, entonces, respuestas a la crisis del símbolo romántico y permiten acercarse a un contenido espiritual que va más allá de las premisas positivistas del naturalismo: la alegoría, ya sea como expresión de un mundo onírico subjetivo o bien como escritura sagrada, es el modo mediante el que Huysmans expresa e intenta superar el nihilismo de fin-de-siecle.

UT PICTURA DECADENTIA: HUYSMANS AS AN ART CRITIC. FROM IMPRESSIONNISTS TO GRÜNEWALD’S CHRIST

This paper examines the different periods in Joris Karl Huysmans’ art criticism: Impressionist, Simbolist and Catholic. In each of these periods the way the written word interprets visual art changes: paradoxically, in an historical moment in which pictorial language starts becoming autonomous from literature, in order to read Degas, Reson or Cézanne’s paintings, Huysmans returns to Horace’s topos ut pictura poesis. In such interpretation, allegory has a key place: it is a reading procedure that allows to give meaning not only to the painting, but to the Third Republic –which is in fact considered decadent- aswell. Both Moreau’s ‘allegorie hiératique’ and the ‘symbolique du moyen âge’ are, consequently, answers to the crisis of the romantic symbol, and allow Huysmans to approach a spiritual content that goes beyond naturalism’s positivist premises: allegory, whether considered as an expression of a subjective oniric world or as a holy scripture, is the way through which author of À rebours expresses and tries to overcome the nihilism of fin-desiècle.

CÓMO PENSAR LAS VANGUARDIAS HOY

En una aproximación a la problemática sobre la actualidad de las vanguardias tanto para la estética como para el pensamiento occidental contemporáneos, el presente estudio crítico toma como punto de partida tres tesis sostenidas en el último tercio del siglo XX. En primer lugar, aquella de Peter Bürger y Bernd Hüppauf sobre el fin o el fracaso de las vanguardias. Luego, la tesis de Sylvian Agacinski, que ha pensando un anacronismo de las vanguardias resultante del desfasaje entre forma estética y progreso técnico. Por último, la ofrecida por Boris Groys, quien ha encontrado un antecedente estalinista desde el cual criticar al vanguardismo: la coincidencia entre utopía y totalitarismo. El trabajo recupera al surrealismo para volver a abrir la pregunta sobre la actualidad de las vanguardias. Por un lado, la puesta en perspectiva del aporte de la revista Documents, fundada por George Bataille y Carl Einstein en 1929, abriría una visión universal y ya no eurocentrista del surrealismo. Por otro lado, la revisión de ciertos aspectos del romanticismo alemán permite repensar el análisis de las vanguardias, no sólo considerando su aporte iniciático, sino también a la luz de una superación de la estética idealista, ante la cual el surrealismo ha jugado un rol histórico importante: el concepto de surrationalisme de Gaston Bachelard presenta al surrealismo como razón de lo irracional, llevándolo más allá de los límites de la estética y haciendo de la vanguardia el reverso de los conflictos que constituyen la mise en abîme de los presupuestos de nuestra cultura occidental.

HOW TO THINK AVANT-GARDES NOWADAYS

This critical study deals with the discussion of the relevance of avant-gardes for contemporary asthetics and for Western thought. It takes as starting point three thesis of the last third of the 20th century. First of all, Peter Bürger and Bernd Hüppauf’s controversial thesis on the failure of avantgardes. Secondly, Sylvian Agacinski’s thesis, which states an anachronism of avant-gardes as a result of the distinction between aesthetic form and technical progress. Lastly, the thesis offered by Boris Groys, who has found a Stalinist precedent to criticize avant-garde movements: the coincidence between utopia and totalitarism. The paper also retakes surrealism to open once again the question about the relevance of avant-gardes nowadays. On the one hand, the contribution of the journal Documents, founded by George Bataille and Carl Einstein in 1929, gives a universal point of view instead of an eurocentric one on considering surrealism. On the other hand, the revision of some aspects of German Romanticism makes possible to rethink the debate on avant-gardes, considering not only their first contributions, but also the overcoming of idealist aesthetics: Bachelard’s notion of surrationalisme presents surrealism as the reason of the irrational, taking surrealism beyond the limits of aesthetics and placing avant-gardes as the reverse side of the conflicts that constitutes the mise en abîme of our Western culture’s premises.

LA TAREA DE LA CRÍTICA DE ARTE: LA LECTURA DE BENJAMIN DEL ROMANTICISMO ALEMÁN

La noción de crítica de arte fue objeto de un debate sobre su lugar y la pertinencia en relación con la obra de arte. En tanto aproximación conceptual a las obras, la crítica ha sido rechazada por aquellas corrientes que consideran el concepto como ajeno a la esfera artística y a la obra como artefacto autosuficiente. Demás está decir que esta posición socava la legitimidad de la propia crítica en tanto disciplina. En el polo opuesto, se encuentran aquellas posiciones ilustradas, especialmente aquellas contenidas en las poéticas normativas, que consideran la obra como una estructura pasible de ser explicada por un sistema conceptual ajeno a las particularidades de las obras singulares. La obra de Walter Benjamin, especialmente la tesis dedicada al Romanticismo alemán, contrasta con ambas perspectivas. El concepto de crítica que halla en los escritos de los románticos se presenta como superador de ambos polos: la crítica se muestra legítima a partir del concepto de “criticabilidad” [Kritisierbarkeit], que establece que la obra contiene en sí misma el germen de su propia crítica y que, por lo tanto, reclama el concepto desde su propia estructura interna. El objetivo es analizar esta lectura de Benjamin, y luego sus críticas a la misma en El origen del drama barroco alemán.

THE TASK OF ART CRITICISM: BENJAMIN'S READING OF GERMAN ROMANTICISM ABSTRACT

The notion of art criticism has been object of a debate about its place and appropriateness in relation to the work of art. As a conceptual approach to the work of art, the criticism has been rejected by those positions that consider the concept outside the artistic sphere and the work of art as a selfsufficient artefact. It is obvious that this position undermines the legitimacy of the art criticism as a discipline. In discussion with these considerations, we found the enlightened positions, especially those contained in the normative poetics, which consider the work of art as a structure that can be explained by a conceptual system that pays no attention to the peculiarities of the singular works. Walter Benjamin’ s work, especially the thesis about the German Romanticism, resists both visions of the problem. The concept of art criticism that he finds in the writings of the first romantics is presented as a superseding of that opposition: the criticism is justified as a discipline by the notion of “criticizability” [Kritisierbarkeit], which establishes that the work contains itself the germ of its own criticism and, therefore, it asks for the concept from its own internal structure. The aim is to analyse Benjamin’s reading, and then his objections to it in The Origin of German Tragic Drama.

Philip II did not only have painters make him decorative paintings for his rooms, he also had agents buy him paintings from the Low Countries. Among these paintings is a little landscape by Cornelis van Dalem giving enough reason to investigate this painter and his work closer.

Son los teóricos neoaristotélicos italianos quienes consolidan en la segunda mitad del siglo xvi la doctrina de las unidades dramáticas. Los autores españoles, sin embargo, proceden a una redefinición de los preceptos clásicos, a fin de proporcionar a la dramaturgia unos parámetros teóricos novedosos y una dimensión social mayor acorde a los nuevos tiempos. Nace así la comedia nueva del Siglo de Oro, apuesta teatral que aboga por la mezcla de géneros y asimismo por una mayor libertad creativa con respecto a las rígidas unidades dramáticas. Con todo, el nuevo modelo teatral español no supone tanto un rechazo de los principios y mecanismos poéticos introducidos por Aristóteles, cuanto una reformulación de la doctrina neoaristotélica procedente de Italia. La mímesis, la unidad de la obra o el decoro se mantienen como pilares poéticos. La comedia nueva comulga, por tanto, con el espíritu neoaristotélico de la época, pero desde una óptica diferente a la preceptiva italiana. La influencia del Estagirita se aprecia claramente en la renovación y actualización de la anagnórisis aristotélica, al convertir los dramaturgos áureos la pintura en un recurso de agnición característico de la comedia siglodorista. Tal aspecto será analizado en este artículo en razón del vivo diálogo que palabras e imágenes mantienen en el Barroco bajo la directriz ut pictura poesis.

Thorough study on the editions of Antonio Bruni da Manduria, the relation between painters, publishers and authors (ut pictura poesis) in early Baroque Rome and Naples, within the academies of the Oziosi and te Humoristi. Printre „Observațiile despre pictură”  ale lui Nicolas Poussin, cea intitulată Diffinitione della Pittura, e della sua propria Imitatione (‘Definiția picturii și a imitației care îi este proprie’) prezintă un interes deosebit, deoarece ridică în mod explicit problema modului în care el înțelege natura picturii și, astfel, sfera de activitate legitimă a pictorului. Vom explora în profunzime natura și mizele analogiei dintre pictură și poezie la Poussin, implicată de substituția cuvântului „poesia” cu „pittura” pe care o operează în definiția picturii ca imitație de acțiuni, precum și de transferul unor termeni cheie din poetica literară, precum mythos sau historia, „povestea”, și concetto sau „ideea”. Pentru a răspunde, mai întâi vom examina pe scurt  principiile poeticii lui Tasso și inovațiile aduse de lectura sa a Poeticii lui Aristotel, urmată de Poussin. Edificator pentru mizele acestei analogii e și faptul că, prin aceasta, Poussin se referă totodată la relația dintre pictură și filosofie, adică dintre gândirea figurativă și gândirea rațională, și astfel la pictură ca o figură specifică a cunoașterii. Pentru a clarifica toate aceste raporturi și conceptul de „pictură filosofică” în viziunea lui Poussin, vom analiza scrisorile sale și alte observații despre pictură, precum cea intitulată Della Idea della Bellezza (‘Despre ideea de frumusețe’), raportându-le la posibilele lor surse, printre care și Discursurile poetice ale lui Tasso.
