Press coverage

The term ‘smart city’ has been introduced only recently in the Italian public debate. Socio-economic factors, that led
to the adoption of this model, are due to greater public opinion /awareness of the issues related to the quality of life,
environmental sustainability and energy saving. Within a wide-ranging crisis, that starts with issues such as
pollution and the high cost of energy, and continues with the exploitation of land resources and climate change, the
concept of ‘smart city’ seems to be the key to a real socio-cultural change. In this sense, the research aims to explore
the trends of use of this term within the two major Italian online newspapers (corriere.it and repubblica.it), during
the time from 1993 to 2013. Specifically, through research of historical archives available online, we try to
understand the context and content associated with the use of this term.Objectives of the survey are:
a. Situate the ‘smart cities’ within a strategic and innovative framework;
b . Identify semantic areas and a universal meaning adopted by both newspapers;
c . To understand the representation provided by both newspapers to the object of study in reference to the potential
application of the model;
d. Define the evolution of the use of the term ‘smart city’ in its various forms

Bu çalışmada, Türkiye " de ana akım ulusal basının Soma Maden " faciası " nı nasıl haberleştirdiği incelenmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında dönemin en çok satan beş ulusal gazetesinde (Zaman, Posta, Hürriyet, Sözcü, Sabah) " facia " nın yaşandığı günün ardından bir hafta boyunca (14-21 Mayıs 2014) olaylarla ilgili haberler taranmıştır. Haberler öncelikle niteliksel içerik analiziyle temalarına ayrıştırılarak incelenmiş daha sonra haberlerde öne çıkan söylemsel stratejilere odaklanılmıştır. Çalışmada farklı politik konumlanış ve yayıncılık anlayışlarına rağmen, ulusal basının maden " faciası " nı meselenin toplumsal, ekonomik ve politik arka planını görmezden gelerek haberleştirdiği ve bunu genelleştirme, dramatikleştirme ve kişiselleştirme söylemsel stratejileri aracılığıyla yaptığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Basın madencilerin ve yakınlarının acılarını genelleştirerek yaşananlardan ulusal bir yas anlatısı kurmuş; madencilerin ve yakınlarının acılarını merkeze alarak konuyu dramatikleştirmiş ve facianın sorumluluğunu yapısal ilişkiler yerine kişilere yüklemiştir. Böylelikle basın " facia " yı yapısal bir yanlılıkla ve sınıf körlüğü içerisinde ele almıştır. Abstract This article analyzes the discursive representation of 2014 Soma coal mine " disaster " in the most circulated five national newspapers (Zaman, Posta, Hürriyet, Sözcü, Sabah) in Turkey. As part of the analysis the newspapers were searched for a one-week period after the disaster (14-21 May 2014) and a total of 1169 news were found. The news were first analyzed with content analysis to depict the main topics of the coverage. In the second phase, the news were analyzed for their main discursive strategies. The results indicate that, despite their different political and editorial preferences, the newspapers overlooked the social, economic and political background of disaster by using three main discursive strategies: Generalization, dramatization and personalization. More specifically the press constructed a national mourning story from the pain of miners " , dramatized the issue with focusing on the tragic stories about miners lives, deaths and heroisms and blamed the particular individuals for the causes of the mine, so that, the press covered the disaster with a class biased perspective.

La personalización es un fenómeno cada vez más extendido en el ámbito de la comunicación política. Si bien no es un rasgo novedoso, la irrupción de los medios de masas, especialmente de la televisión, y la posterior mediatización de la política han favorecido su expansión. De ahí que numerosas investigaciones se hayan interesado por esta tendencia, sobre todo en esta última década.
El objetivo de este trabajo es comparar hasta qué punto y en qué grado podría considerarse la personalización como un rasgo actual en la cobertura de la prensa de países con sistemas políticos similares, pero con sistemas mediáticos diferentes. Se entiende aquí la personalización como una práctica de los periodistas que se caracteriza por centrar la atención sobre los políticos, así como por un mayor énfasis en sus características personales.
El estudio realiza un análisis de contenido de la cobertura de los principales periódicos de Alemania y España en las elecciones generales de 2009 y 2011, respectivamente. Al ser un estudio comparativo permite avanzar en la comprensión del fenómeno de la personalización desde una perspectiva internacional.
