HANDBOOK: Supporting Queer and Trans Students in Art and Design Education is the first student-authored resource book of its kind. It offers faculty a radical rethink on how to work with queer and transgender students on their path to becoming artists and designers – from the first day of school through to seminars, studio classes, and critiques. HANDBOOK draws directly from student experiences to help faculty of all orientations bring equitable teaching practices and queer curricula into art and design classes.


HANDBOOK is a collaborative intervention in art and design pedagogy. Queer Publishing Project was a working group of over 100 students, alumni, staff and faculty at OCAD University and beyond who identify as queer and/or transgender.

This article is about technologies that arithmetize and data-manage the other and the foe. It undertakes a mini-genealogy of information technology used to identify and sort individuals. Information management technologies developed in libraries are identified as fundamental, yet overlooked, sources of a bio-political revolution. In particular, the library card registry and the smart number has led to a radicalization and standardization of the state’s capacities to know individuals. This article is also about a curious North-South symbiosis, or ‘boomerang effect’, where technologies first used on the other in illegible, securitized situations are then transported back to the metropole where they are initially deployed to capture the internal other and then, ultimately, the entire population. Finally, this article is about the global war on terror and how ‘knowing the enemy’ is intimately connected to a whole host of data-mining techniques and statistical knowledges.

In this paper the instrumental behaviour of graphic devices within the cultural arena to construct knowledge, subjectivity and systems of power is discussed in relation to the maintenance of stereotypes and typologies. These visual systems are discussed in relation to the term " Graphesis " and how visual artifacts define and confine gender based typologies. Strategies to invert fixed states of gender performance are theorized in relation to ideas of Judith Butler and Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. Para Feminism is also discussed in relation to the use of parody and performance in a practice centred on distribution networks and reproductive processes.
