Religion, Laicity, and Secularisation

Over the past three decades, Mexico has witnessed the end to the Catholic Church's virtual monopoly of religious and moved increasingly towards religious diversity. This transformation leads us to the following questions: What challenges does the rise of religious diversity represent for the secularism model in Mexico? The first section of this article describes the current model of secularism in Mexico as the context for church-state relations. The emphasis here is on new areas of confrontation and tension between different political and religious actors who vie to redefine the state's role in the public sphere. Religious diversity is an important part of cultural pluralism in Mexico. To chart the new religious map, we analyze recent data on religious belonging from Mexico's Population and Housing Census (2010) and identify the main actors and trends within this transformation. Religious groups have different positions on the relationship between religion and the public sphere. To analyze them, we draw on the Mexican National Survey on Religious Beliefs and Practices conducted by the Religious Research Network of Mexico (RIFREM) in 2016 (Hernández et al. 2016). Based on all available information, we reflect on the issues and challenges of religious transformation and the resulting need to redefine secularism.

Ensayo acreedor al 2º lugar del concurso nacional de ensayo universitario de la Cátedra Benito Juárez. Espacio público, religión, laicidad y conocimiento científico son los conceptos en torno a los cuales desarrollo esta disertación. El texto está dispuesto en cinco apartados con los siguientes motivos: 1) fundamentos históricos y filosóficos de la relación religión-espacio público; 2) particularidades de los discursos religiosos; 3) razones para la inclusión de los ciudadanos creyentes a la esfera pública; 4)  condiciones para su participación en las deliberaciones  sobre el bien común, y 5) aportes potenciales de los argumentos religiosos a las discusiones sobre ciencia.

A l’exception d’une petite trentaine de pays, toutes les nations du monde possèdent une armée. Au sein de ces forces militaires, des hommes et des femmes font le choix de se mettre au service de leurs concitoyens, en dépassant leurs intérêts propres. Leur mission les amène à côtoyer une détresse extrême, la mort, des blessures visibles et invisibles ou à en être l’objet, et parfois l’auteur. Cette spécificité de la vie militaire est la principale raison d’être d’un soutien de l’homme qui va au-delà des aspects physiques, psychologiques et sociaux. Face au danger imminent de la mort, le besoin d’une assistance spirituelle se fait ressentir. Aussi, un service d’aumônerie militaire existe dans de nombreux pays. L’absence de position commune pour son organisation est remarquable, chaque Etat déterminant sa propre politique et sa propre législation dans ce domaine.

La diversité des réponses apportées aux demandes religieuses dans les armées nationales dépend avant tout du rapport entre l’Etat et les appartenances religieuses des militaires et de leurs familles. Chaque État reste maître de la position qu’il adopte : neutralité ou reconnaissance d’une religion officielle, avec ou sans prise en compte de la pluralité religieuse.

Dans les démocraties occidentales, le régime de laïcité n’est pas une exception française. Le principe de séparation entre l’Etat et les institutions religieuses peut se concevoir de différentes manières.

Dans cette étude, nous examinerons la compréhension de la notion de laïcité et le statut de l’aumônerie militaire dans le contexte particulier des Etats-Unis d’Amérique.

Le Centre de Ressources D’un Monde à l’Autre, en réponse à une commande du Ministère de la Ville, a réalisé au cours de la période 200-2001 un diagnostic régional des lieux de culte musulman1, dans la région Nord Pas-de-Calais, qui n’a pas connu d’équivalent en France2. Ce diagnostic se traduit pour l'essentiel par un inventaire exhaustif des lieux de culte pour lesquels le diagnostic apporte un ensemble d’informations d’ordre géographique, architectural, ou encore de capacité d’accueil.

Illustrare oggi il tema del laicato, ad oltre cinquant’anni dalla conclusione del concilio Vaticano II, dopo la costituzione Lumen Gentium, il decreto Apostolicam Actuositatem, l’esortazione di Paolo VI Evangelii Nuntiandi, quella di Giovanni Paolo II Christifideles laici e quella di Papa Francesco Evangelii Gaudium, è una significativa opportunità.
Già alcuni teologi della Nouvelle Théologie come Congar, laici come Guitton, altri teologi come Philips e il medesimo magistero pontificio con Pio XI, avevano riposto l’attenzione sulla necessità, da parte dei Pastori, di far crescere e maturare la consapevolezza del fedele-cristiano laico, circa la sua vocazione e la sua missione.
L’insegnamento di Giovanni Paolo II nella Christifideles laici, operò una sintesi individuando nel binomio vocazione – missione, la chiave per trattenere i fattori decisivi propri dello sviluppo storico della teologia del laicato.
L’intento di questo breve elaborato, sarà quello di offrire alcuni spunti ed alcune riflessioni di tipo teologico, pastorale e spirituale, in merito alla tematica della teologia del laicato, alla luce dell’esortazione apostolica post-sinodale di Giovanni Paolo II, Christifideles laici, sulla vocazione e la missione dei fedeli laici nella Chiesa e nel mondo.

« Je fus au séminaire d'une tristesse qui, à 16 ans, a bien peu d'exemples. » Le célèbre aveu de Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, revenant sur les années où sa famille le contraignit à entrer dans les ordres, prend une résonnance particulière à la lecture des milliers de lettres retrouvées dans les archives du légat du pape, le cardinal Caprara, envoyé en France sous le Consulat pour y négocier la « réconciliation » des prêtres mariés pendant la Révolution. Qui étaient ces hommes, révolutionnaires convaincus ou au contraire victimes de la « terreur religieuse », qui à partir de 1791 choisirent de célébrer leurs noces et de renoncer à leurs voeux ? Qui étaient leurs épouses ? Comment et de quoi ont-ils vécu, une fois leur union officialisée ? Pourquoi, surtout, une fois la paix civile revenue, la majorité d'entre eux a t -elle refusé de rentrer dans le sein de l'Église ? Une analyse psychologique, politique et sociale saisissante, sur l'un des phénomènes les plus méconnus de l'histoire culturelle de la Révolution française.

Throughout the nineteenth century, Maskilic journals increased their publication of anti-Hasidic satires. From the eighteen-sixties onward, this literature came primarily as a response to the revival in the publishing of Hasidic hagiography and to the spread of Hasidism into new territory. To this point, no complete review or even general survey has been performed on this extensive polemical literature, despite the fact that it has much to teach us about Hasidism and the Haskalah in those years. We are not speaking of an insignificant bibliographical lacuna, but of a disregard for an entire field of research which would shed light not only on a forgotten chapter of modern Hebrew and Yiddish literature but also on an important chapter in the relationships between Maskilim and Hasidim in that period and the genesis and development of the different streams of Hasidism. This Maskilic literature intended to do more than eradicate Hasidism; it aimed to strengthen the self-consciousness of the individual Maskilim who found themselves alone in Hasidic territory. Paradoxically, the literature documented the very movement it intended to eradicate from the world. The distorted reflection displayed in the anti-Hasidic literature does more than present a caricature of its subject -- it conceals hitherto unknown elements about the nature and development of the Hasidic movement. The present article deals with one such case, a satire on Bratslav Hasidism from 1863, which has at its core a Maskilic satirical text written by Yehiel Meller on pilgrimage to the grave of R. Nahman of Bratslav in Uman.

L’Accordo bilaterale di collaborazione culturale e scientifica interuniversitaria tra l’Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza” e la Universidad de la República di Montevideo, nato nel 2004, ha dimostrato da subito di essere un fertile terreno di incontro per stimolare la conoscenza del-l’antropologia italiana in America Latina e parallelamente dell’antropologia di quella regione in Italia. L’intrecciarsi di positivi soggiorni didattici e di ricerca – tra Roma e Montevideo – ha permesso la realizzazione di questo volume che costituisce un contributo sistematico a uno dei temi più vivi del dibattito culturale uruguaiano, quello dell’identità e della sua costruzione storica. L’uruguaianità e il suo affermarsi – appunto – in un Paese che è cambiato, ma che in questo modificarsi ha voluto e saputo mantenere centrale il proprio ideale identitario.
Emerge dunque la difficile storia dell’identità in “un Paese che cambia”, lungo un percorso che ha visto alternarsi, contrastarsi, ricomporsi in nuovi equilibri, continuità e cambiamento. E appare quella mezcla di valenze simboliche, patrimoni culturali ed espressioni sociali, costruitasi e manifestatasi in differenti modi nei vari periodi storici: da una uruguayidad mitizzata seguendo le linee di progetti nazionalistici, a un emblema di modello avanzato di integrazione sociale, fino a una riserva di memorie cui attingere come risorsa simbolica per elaborare le ombre lunghe della dittatura depositatesi nella coscienza profonda del Paese.

Relations between the Czech society and the Church have historically manifest themselves in an extraordinarily dramatic fashion. Author explores the various processes which culminated in Roman Catholicism drastically falling in both position and status in the modern Czech culture, society, and state.  A powerful state church and respected social institution with extensive symbolic prestige at the beginning of the 19th century, the Czech Catholic Church succumbed to mass secularization throughout the second half of the same century. This historically development was further reinforced by the rise of totalitarian ideologies, thus rendering a privileged and self-confident national church a problematic, humiliated, barely tolerated and, for much of the 20th century, brutally persecuted community.

Este trabalho analisa o processo de secularização das atitudes e representações católicas diante da morte, no Rio de Janeiro, nos século XVIII e XIX. Parte da constatação de que, no século XVIII, a Igreja exerceu controle sobre a morte, utilizando-se da pedagogia do medo para convencer os fiéis a seguirem seus ensinamentos, sob a ameaça de condenação eterna, após a morte. No século XIX, principalmente na segunda metade, a difusão do saber médico e dos movimentos liberal, maçônico, protestante, positivista, cientificista, anticlerical, dentre outros, juntamente com os conflitos entre Igreja e Estado, forneceram a base do questionamento ao controle eclesiástico sobre as práticas funerárias e as concepções acerca do além-túmulo, especificamente em relação aos cemitérios públicos, aos enterramentos, ao registro dos óbitos, ao ato de testar com vistas à salvação da alma, ao recurso dos sacramentos e ao temor diante da morte. Aspectos esses que são interpretados como indicadores da secularização da morte, compreendida como perda de legitimidade da instituição eclesiástica sobre a sociedade e como recuo da pedagogia do medo, e não descrença em relação à vida após a morte ou à escatologia católica.

Che cosa significa vivere in un’età secolare? Il posto occupato dalla religione è profondamente cambiato in Occidente nell’arco di pochi secoli. In questo libro Charles Taylor indaga le conseguenze di questo sommovimento culturale chiedendosi che cosa accade nella vita delle persone quando una società in cui era praticamente impossibile non credere in Dio diventa una società in cui la fede, anche per il più convinto dei credenti, è solo un’opzione tra le tante. Taylor assume una prospettiva storica e segue lo svilupparsi nel mondo cristiano di quegli aspetti della modernità che chiamiamo secolari. Ciò che descrive, di fatto, non è un’unica trasformazione continua, ma una serie di nuove partenze in cui le vecchie forme di vita religiosa si sono dissolte o inaridite e sono state affiancate da nuove interpretazioni del sacro. Oggi noi viviamo in un mondo caratterizzato non tanto dall’assenza di religione quanto dal moltiplicarsi delle opzioni religiose e dalla comparsa di nuove forme di spiritualità e irreligiosità cui i singoli gruppi o individui si aggrappano per dare un senso alle proprie vite e forma alle proprie aspirazioni. In questo orizzonte fratturato, secolarizzazione diventa sinonimo più di frammentazione delle identità che non di nascita di una singola e coesa identità secolare. Solo così diventa possibile comprendere i paradossi, le contraddizioni, le incertezze del periodo che stiamo vivendo.

Αντικείμενο του βιβλίου είναι το ζήτημα των μεταρρυθμίσεων στο χώρο του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου και πιο συγκεκριμένα το πρόβλημα της ερμηνείας των Γενικών Κανονισμών , οι οποίοι επηρέασαν τη διαδικασία ανασυγκρότησης του ορθόδοξου μιλλέτ . Η μελέτη δεν περιορίζεται στην ανάλυση του κειμένου των Κανονισμών, αλλά διερευνά το πολιτικό πεδίο που συγκρότησε ο καταρτισμός τους. Οδηγεί έτσι, όχι μόνο σε πλούσιο πρωτογενές υλικό, αλλά και σε συμπεράσματα που φωτίζουν σημαντικές πλευρές της ζωής της ελληνορθόδοξης κοινότητας στην Κωνσταντινούπολη. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, οι στόχοι της εργασίας είναι:
- Να αναλύσει τι πολιτικές και κοινωνικές προϋποθέσεις της ανασυγκρότησης του ορθόδοξου μιλλέτ, ξεκινώντας από τα δίκτυα ισχύος και τις ομάδες συμφερόντων που συγκροτήθηκαν ήδη από τη δεκαετία του 1830.
- Να εξετάσει διεξοδικά το σχηματισμό των δύο πτερύγων , της κληρικαλικής και της μεταρρυθμιστικής και την αντιπαράθεσή τους κατά τις εργασίες του Εθνικού Προσωρινού Συμβουλίου.
- Να περιγράψει και να ερμηνεύσει το πεδίο πολιτικών ανταγωνισμών, όπως διαμορφώθηκε στο Πατριαρχείο, μετά τη ψήφιση των Γενικών Κανονισμών.
Σύμφωνα με την ερμηνεία που επιχειρείται εδώ, η ενδεχόμενη «λαϊκοποίηση» της Εκκλησίας δεν σημαίνει απαραίτητα και μια ώθηση στη διαδικασία εκκοσμίκευσης, δηλαδή, στη θεμελιακή διάκριση της θρησκευτικής από την πολιτική σφαίρα . Κι αυτό δεν οφείλεται τόσο στην αδυναμία του λαϊκού στοιχείου να επιβάλει την παρουσία του στον εκκλησιαστικό κόσμο, όσο στην ικανότητα του κλήρου να εγκολπώνεται τα «κοσμικά» ιδεολογικά σχήματα, συμμετέχοντας στη διαμόρφωση της δημόσιας σφαίρας που υπό κανονικές συνθήκες θα έπρεπε να τον περιθωριοποιήσει.

Quand il est à Rome, le pape François déjeune chaque jour au milieu de bonnes soeurs dont il partage le modeste repas. Signe de la vie simple qu’il s’est choisie en référence à François d’Assise, dont il fut le premier pape à adopter le patronyme comme pour inaugurer une ère nouvelle. Mais aussi, dit-on, façon de conjurer le risque d’un empoisonnement, tant sa volonté de réforme heurterait les puissants du Vatican… Pour autant, en faire un pape révolutionnaire reviendrait à ne pas saisir à quel point son action est limitée par la doctrine, le fonctionnement des structures de l’Église et les difficultés contemporaines du catholicisme. Si François, professionnel de la communication et habile jésuite, tient tant à un aggiornamento, c’est avant tout pour tenter d'enrayer le recul, aussi rapide que profond, de la foi romaine partout en Occident.

This study aims to understand the Monastery of S. Salvador of Vairão after the extinction of religious orders, namely the new uses of the complex, and the construction of the public cemetery. The construction of the cemetery begun in 1876, since in that decade several parishes around Porto built public cemeteries. The construction was delayed because of other constructions in the parish such as the aqueducts for the managing of water of the public fountain. The cemetery's main door indicates 1878 as its date of completion. The last abbess died in 1891, and from then began the process of integrating assets into the National Treasury. The inventory of all the assets of the churches and chapels of Vairão of July 9 1912 mentions the church with a tower and its dependencies, the chapel of St. John, and the address of houses with backyards, which served as the parish priest's house, as well as several chapels that were incorporated into the National Treasury, along with its objects. The monastery and its dependencies were heavily transformed in 1922, 1944 and 1966 due to renovations and expansions. Those were documented by DGEMN because they were in the protection area of the St. John chapel, classified as of public interest. Having been a Nursery and Vocational School, the monastery is now an inn for pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela, and a holiday center, while the church continues to be used as the parish temple. The appreciation of the monastery's heritage is seen on the PDM provided by the Vila do Conde City Council that informs that the church was proposed to be classified as of Public Interest. The monastery is still surrounded by agricultural land, probably not to the full extent it would have been. This space is not used, except for a small building that serves as the parish headquarters of the Association of Portugal´s Young Farmers.

A l’aube du centenaire de la loi de séparation de l’église et de l’Etat de 1905, l’intégration du culte musulman en France est devenue une réalité institutionnelle avec l’installation en 2003 du Conseil français du Culte musulman. Si l’émergence de nouveaux minarets ne semble plus susciter de vives polémiques, la perception de l’islam en tant que composante intrinsèque de la nation française se conjugue, quant à elle, encore difficilement au présent. Etre un enfant de migrant et se définir en tant que musulman est encore sujet à interrogation, suscite même de la suspicion. Cette crainte, sans aucun doute, n’est pas sans lien avec une histoire qui s’est construite dans un rapport ambivalent à l’altérité islamique. Cependant, au moment même où l’Union européenne développe son programme de protection des minorités, les représentations fantasmées d’une confession religieuse ou de populations venues de pays musulmans engendrent encore, en France, des pratiques discriminatoires dont les enfants de migrants maghrébins et noirs africains semblent être les principales victimes. Pour comprendre et dépasser ce phénomène, il est nécessaire de revenir à la source d’une histoire migratoire mouvementée et de dépassionner le débat sur les modalités du croire chez les musulmans.

Turkey has witnessed a proliferation of Islamic television channels since the liberalization of broadcasting in the 1990s. The programming of these TV channels was initially distinctly theological in character, with shows focusing on the doctrinal, scriptural, and ritualistic aspects of Islam. More recently, however, they have started producing family-friendly entertainment programs as well as shows aimed at “strengthening the family.” Islamic broadcasters intend their family-focused programming as civil initiatives against what they see as the increasing corrosion of the “moral fabric of the family” and devaluation of “family values” in contemporary Turkish society. In these TV shows, audiences are provided with guidance and techniques that would help them cultivate ethical dispositions, knowledge, and skills so that they could assume autonomy and responsibility for administering their families more effectively. Islamic broadcasters explicitly identify their role as assisting the state in  fighting social problems through their programming. Moreover, the discourses and sensibilities promoted on television articulate with the biopolitical concerns of the nation-state and the emerging rationalities of governance. While Islamic television professionals’ self-ascribed mission to “strengthen the family” emerges from a religiously inspired moral imperative to provide service, it simultaneously indicates their internalization of neoliberal rationalities of governance that promote the responsibilization of non-governmental actors for providing social services as well as that of individuals for supporting and caring for their family members. In ciuda contributiilor lor evident pozitive, rationalismul si secularizarea nu ne-au adus cu adevarat ceea ce ne-au promis. Lumea occidentala este confruntata astazi cu probleme chiar mai mari decît a avut înainte. Evenimentele tragice de la 11 septembrie 2001 si cele care au urmat acestora demonstreaza ca ignoranta noastra atît cu privire la rolul pozitiv, cît si la cel negativ pe care îl poate juca religia în secolul XXI este extrem de periculoasa ai poate conduce la consecinţe neaşteptate.

L’objectif de cette thèse est de reconstituer l’évolution urbaine, sociale et culturelle de la ville de San Cristóbal de Las Casas, au Chiapas (Mexique), depuis sa fondation en 1528 et jusqu’aux premières décennies du XXe siècle.
Centrée sur l’étude du seul cimetière existant dans la ville depuis la fin du XIXe siècle, la recherche explore « la question funéraire » comme ensemble de croyances, de pratiques et de représentations mentales et matérielles sur la Mort et les souvenir des morts. Celle-ci est abordée selon trois axes dont les mots-clés sont : sécularisation, panteón* et coleto. À travers la sécularisation, il s’agit d’analyser les rivalités institutionnelles entre l’Église et l’État dans l’histoire du Chiapas. À travers le terme panteón*, il est question de rendre compte des transformations urbaines, artistiques et idéologiques liés à un nouvel aménagement spatial et aux nouvelles pratiques du funéraire dans son ancienne capitale. Enfin, le gentilé coleto se trouve au centre des enjeux politiques et culturels qui entourent la construction des identités collectives de cette ville et au niveau régional.
L’analyse de longue durée portant sur la naissance et le développement de ce cimetière peut remettre en perspective le début d’une période dite « modernisatrice » au Chiapas. Elle amène également à regarder autrement la pensée binaire qui domine cette ville depuis plusieurs siècles, l’écartelant constamment entre des pôles antagonistes tels que le religieux / le politique, le colonial / le national, ou l’indigène / l’étranger. 

The central aim of this thesis is to reconstruct the urban, social and cultural evolution of the city of San Cristobal de Las Casas in Chiapas (Mexico), since its foundation in 1528 until the first decades of the 20th century.
It is focused on the only city’s cemetery established at the end of the 19th century, to further explore “the funerary question” as the broad range of beliefs, practices and material and mental imagery about Death and the memory of the dead. The study is addressed by three thematic axes articulated by the keywords secularization, panteón* and coleto. Through secularization, the institutional rivalries between the Church and the State can be analyzed concerning the history of Chiapas. By means of the word panteón* are examined the aspects relating the urban, artistic and ideological transformations caused by the new burial spatial organization and the emergence of new funerary practices in its former capital city. Finally, the demonym coleto is the key issue in the political and cultural matters behind the construction of the city’s and regional collective identities.
The long-term perspective about the origin and development of this cemetery can bring a new questioning to that period of “modernization” in Chiapas. It can also help to reconsider the binary thought dominating the city for centuries, splitting it continuously between opposites such as religion/politics, colonial/national or indigenous/foreigner. 


El objetivo de esta tesis consiste en reconstituir la historia urbana, social y cultural de la ciudad de San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, desde su fundación en 1528 hasta las primeras décadas del siglo XX.
A partir del único cementerio que se instauró en la ciudad a fines del siglo XIX, la investigación explora de manera más amplia la aquí llamada “cuestión funeraria”; es decir, el conjunto de creencias, prácticas y representaciones mentales y materiales acerca de la muerte y la memoria de los difuntos. El estudio se divide en tres temas que se articulan entre sí y cada uno mediante una palabra clave: secularización, panteón y coleto. Con el concepto de secularización se analizan las rivalidades institucionales entre la Iglesia y el Estado en la historia de Chiapas. El término “panteón” expone las transformaciones urbanas, artísticas e ideológicas a partir de la reorganización de los lugares de defunción y la realización de nuevas prácticas funerarias en su antigua capital. Por último, el gentilicio coleto nos lleva al centro de aspectos políticos y culturales que intervienen en la construcción de las identidades colectivas de la ciudad y la región. 
El análisis de larga duración acerca del nacimiento y desarrollo de este cementerio permite dar otras dimensiones a un período considerado de “modernización” en Chiapas. El mismo procedimiento ofrece también la posibilidad de superar la lógica binaria que domina a esta ciudad desde hace varios siglos, atrapándola continuamente entre polos antagónicos tales como lo religioso/lo político, lo colonial/lo nacional y lo indígena/lo extranjero.

As teorias da secularização têm marcado o debate científico na área da sociologia das religiões desde a década de 1960. Não obstante sua antiguidade e hegemonia nesse campo, para determinados teóricos a evolução não unilinear, universal ou determinista do fenômeno religioso nas sociedades modernas tem vindo a desafiar seus pressupostos principais. Ademais, a desprivatização do religioso e seu novo protagonismo na esfera pública têm levado a questão da relação entre religião e política ao centro das reflexões sociológicas. Tais mudanças têm estimulado o deslocamento do debate na direção do político, como revela a centralidade de categorias como a laicidade, secularismo, múltiplas secularidades e outros. O objetivo deste dossiê é, então, colocar em discussão a contribuição explicativa destes diferentes enfoques analíticos, destacando seus méritos e limites, bem como suas diferenças, oposições e complementaridades. Além da discussão teórica, também serão aceites estudos empíricos que contribuam para o debate sobre o estatuto da religião e da secularidade no contexto da modernidade múltipla e global.

In this chapter from The Cambridge History of Atheism edited by Michael Ruse and Stephen Bullivant, I trace the development of a secular culture in France by analyzing revolutionary and post-revolutionary cults, from the Cult of Reason in 1793-1794 to the Religion of Humanity in the 1840s-1850s.

Il presente contributo intende restituire criticamente l’evoluzione della prospettiva di Jürgen Habermas sul rapporto tra secolarizzazione e problema del pluralismo religioso. Si mostrerà infatti come all’iniziale punto di vista “religiosamente” unmusikalisch, tendenzialmente laicista, del primo Habermas, che aveva diagnosticato un inevitabile e inarrestabile processo di esaurimento e di traduzione delle esperienze religiose nel linguaggio razionale della filosofia, sia subentrata negli ultimi anni una nuova interpretazione del religioso che sottolinea piuttosto il dovere di riconoscimento da parte del sapere laico di quelle risorse cognitive presenti irriducibilmente nella religione come figura contemporanea dello spirito. Si vorrà evidenziare allora come Habermas abbia voluto offrire un’interpretazione alternativa della questione della secolarizzazione, un’interpretazione “non inquietante” del cosiddetto dilemma di Böckenförde, come presupposto teorico per pensare in maniera più complessa il problema del pluralismo religioso da una prospettiva non laicistica e non paternalistica, ossia capace di mettersi davvero in ascolto della pluralità delle esperienze religiose.

This paper is intended to give a critical account of the evolution of Jürgen Habermas’ perspective on the relationship between secularisation and the problem of religious pluralism. In fact, it will be shown how the initial “religiously” unmusikalisch, basically secularist point of view of the early Habermas, who had diagnosed an inevitable and unstoppable process of exhaustion and of the translation of religious experiences into the rational language of philosophy, has been replaced in recent years by a new interpretation of the religious that instead emphasizes the obligation of secular knowledge to recognize those cognitive and ethical resources irreducibly present in religion as a contemporary figure of the spirit. It will then be highlighted how Habermas wanted to offer an alternative interpretation of the question of secularisation, a “non-disquieting” interpretation of the so-called Böckenförde’s dilemma as a theoretical assumption to think in a more complex way about the problem of religious pluralism from a perspective that is not laicist nor paternalistic, i.e. that is capable of truly listening to the plurality of religious experiences.

After a brief introduction, the article focuses on the unique challenges associated with reinterpreting the supernaturalism of the Lotus Sūtra for compatibility with a secular worldview. Next is a segment on scholarly opinions that cast doubt on a supernatural reading of the sutra’s ultimate revelation and hinder belief today in Nichiren’s eternalization of this reading in the thirteenth century. With the above topics addressed and hermeneutic integrity in mind, a phrase is introduced for converting the revelation into a comprehendible insight from immanence. Thereafter and until close, the phrase is contextualized with traditional Buddhist and contemporary socio-philosophical principles to show compatibility and readiness to replace faith in a transcendent understanding of the text’s long-venerated core.

In the struggle to establish an operative model of secularism in Quebec, the meaning and purpose of religious symbols has become a subject of an intense and divisive debate. Quebec's uneasy relationship with its Catholic heritage, coupled with increasing concerns over religious extremism and transnational terrorism have contributed to widespread mistrust of overt religious symbols and religious minorities. This paper reveals how political discourse in Quebec is further exacerbating this mistrust by privileging particular interpretations of religious symbols through an examination of the General Consultation and Public Hearings on Bill 60 (the Charter of Secularism) in 2014. Through an analysis of the transcripts from the hearings, I highlight how politicians have framed the conversation on religious symbols in the Quebec public sphere in a manner that obscures their relationship to personal piety and concretizes their diverse and ambivalent meanings into dogmatic messages.

Resumen: El desarrollo de La Umbanda en Uruguay, ha tenido ciertas particularidades propias producto de la tradición laica del Estado uruguayo. Desde el comienzo de su presencia en Uruguay, esta religión tuvo dificultades para lograr aceptación social y legitimidad, por lo menos, durante las cuatro décadas siguientes a su introducción en Uruguay. La restauración de la democracia en el país en 1985, supuso nuevas posibilidades de expresión y la puesta en cuestión del modelo de espacio público vigente hasta esa época. Las religiones buscaron mayor presencia en el espacio público y a consecuencia de ello, aparecieron tensiones entre las distintas confesiones con el Estado y entre ellas. Esta lucha ha seguido un derrotero complejo en estos últimos treinta años. Para intentar comprenderla analizamos aquí algunas de sus claves, las estrategias usadas, y sus resultados en el siglo XXI. Abstract: The Umabanda development in Uruguay has had some own characteristics product of the secular tradition of the Uruguayan State. Since the beginning of its presence in Uruguay, this religion had difficulties in achieving social acceptance and legitimacy, at least for the next four decades to their introduction in Uruguay. The restoration of democracy in the country in 1985 meant new possibilities of expression and the questioning of the current model of public space until then. Religions attempted to have greater presence in the public space and as a result, tensions emerged between faiths with the state and each other. This struggle has followed a complex road map in the last thirty years. To try to understand, it discusses some of its keys, the strategies used, and results in the XXI century.

La relation entre la religion et la modernité constitue la partie majeure des études dans la sociologie des religions. Depuis l’âge classique de la sociologie, les chercheurs, les sociologues se focalisent sur cette question et ils produisent les différents points de vue selon leurs analyses et constats.
