« Un monde d’argent. Le difficile financement milanais de la coûteuse paix de Fribourg (1516-1519) », dans Alexandre DAFFLON, Lionel DORTHE et Claire GANTET (dir.) Après Marignan. Résumé : Arme décisive de la victoire et du maintien de la paix, l’impôt peut mettre cependant en péril le fragile consensus politique. Un des buts annoncés de la paix de Fribourg était de protéger le duché de Milan redevenu français après Marignan de toute nouvelle descente des carrés suisses. Or, le roi paie la sécurité de ses frontières au prix fort : un million de ducats doublé de 50 000 ducats de pensions annuelles aux cantons et à des particuliers. Mon article tend à montrer comment la sécurisation du duché de Milan par la paix de Fribourg a largement contribué à fragiliser le consensus politique autour de la domination royale en Milanais. Afin de couvrir le coût de la paix, il apparaît légitime au pouvoir royal que les Lombards contribuent à l’effort financier (communes, élites marchandes, feudataires, artisans, peuple manouvrier, paysans, mais excepté le clergé jouissant du privilège d’exemption). Trois traites à chaque premier 1er janvier des années 1517, 1518 et 1519 sont prévues pour honorer l’accord. C’est à chaque fois l’occasion d’étudier de façon précise les tensions qui se firent jour au moment des négociations.

The development of a system of printing privileges in Milan is very similar to that of Venice. Following the first privilege “pro arte introducenda” the system of printing privileges began to flourish; as in Venice, they did not involve just the exclusive right to print a work but also guaranteed a protected market
for the edition by prohibiting the sale and import of identical editions. In Milan,
however, from the fifteenth century onwards privileges also began to be granted for works which were printed outside the State of Milan, thus offering protection to printers who were not Milanese subjects. Eventually, towards the end of the sixteenth century, and given the notable weakness of the printing trade, both the State and the Church in Milan were active in protecting certain individuals in the trade who were thus given an advantage over their rivals thanks to preventive
privileges and fiscal exemptions.

Across Europe, the parish church has stood for centuries at the centre of local communities; it was the focal point of its religious life, the rituals performed there marked the stages of life from the cradle to the grave. Nonetheless the church itself artistically and architecturally stood apart from the parish community. It was often the largest and only stone-built building in a village; it was legally distinct being subject to canon law, as well as consecrated for the celebration of religious rites. The buildings associated with the ‘cure of souls’ were sacred sites or holy places, where humanity interacted with the divine.

In spite of the importance of the parish church, these buildings have generally not received the same attention from historians as non-parochial places of worship. This collection of essays redresses this balance and reflects on the parish church across a number of confessions – Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed and Anti-Trinitarian – during the early modern period. Rather than providing a series of case studies of individual buildings, each essay looks at the evolution of parish churches in response to religious reform as well as confessional change and upheaval. They examine aspects of their design and construction; furnishings and material culture; liturgy and the use of the parish church. While these essays range widely across Europe, the volume also considers how religious provision and the parish church were translated into a global context with colonial and commercial expansion in the Americas and Asia. This interdisciplinary volume seeks to identify what was distinctive about the parish church for the congregations that gathered in them for worship and for communities across the early modern world.

La seconda metà del Duecento segnò in Italia e in Europa l’avvio di un processo di profonda revisione dell’identità nobiliare. Ad affermarsi, non senza resistenze, fu un’idea di nobiltà fondata anzitutto su di un riconoscimento politico, quella che Bartolo di Sassoferrato in un suo celebre trattato avrebbe definito «nobilitas illata per principatum tenen-tem».
In molte città italiane a questo cruciale passaggio avrebbe corrisposto nel lungo periodo una definizione del privilegio di stampo patrizio, de-rivata dalla partecipazione al governo del comune. Non però a Milano, città che pure nel 1377 ebbe una sua “matricola dei nobili”, tradizio-nalmente salutata dalla storiografia come pietra di fondazione del pa-triziato locale.Piuttosto che delimitare i confini di un ceto di governo relativamente omogeneo, la matricola milanese tracciava infatti il profi-lo di una nobiltà larghissima e tutta naturale, definita dall’appartenenza a determinate parentele, senza alcun riguardo per ruoli politici, ricchez-ze, e perfino per la stessa inclusione nei ranghi della cittadinanza. Una “strana” nobiltà, dunque, che questo libro intende illustrare, mostrando per prima cosa come essa potesse costituire un linguaggio di comuni-cazione intercetuale, un ponte tra uomini situati agli antipodi o quasi del mondo sociale.

The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana’s Adoration of the Christ Child painted by the young Bartolomeo Suardi, later called Bramantino, includes two figures – a classically dressed man in the background on the left, and a woman standing in the foreground at the opposite corner – whose identity is controversial. Are they the Emperor Augustus and the Tiburtine Sibyl, as first proposed by Adolfo Venturi? If so, however, why are they not looking at an apparition of the Virgin and Child inside the sun, as is usual in depictions of the Emperor's vision, but instead are represented as part of a Nativity scene? Is he Augustus, but without the Sibyl? Could they be the poet Virgil and a virgin saint? Or might the woman be the midwife Salome described in the apocryphal Gospels?
In this article I argue that these two figures are indeed Augustus and the Sibyl, and that the unusual composition devised by the young Bramantino can be explained by connecting its imagery to a less common visualization that was available in this period in contemporary Florentine theatre and, probably, also in the presepio staged around the Holy Child in the Franciscan basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli, Rome. In both instances, the emperor and the seeress were shown in close proximity to an adoration of the Christ Child. Moreover, I propose that Bramantino’s painting does not show the vision of Augustus, but rather the earlier premonition of the Sibyl herself. I then proceed to contextualize the Ambrosiana’s Adoration within the frequent selection of Nativity scenes in Franciscan-influenced art produced for private devotion in Lombardy from the 1450s onwards. Finally, I suggest that, while clearly a depiction of the birth of Jesus, the Ambrosiana’s Adoration should be also linked to the topic of a future institution of peace on earth, a theme that underlies many of its elements.

Dopo il Concilio di Trento Carlo Borromeo reintroduce la pratica di innalzare colonne con una croce sommitale agli incroci stradali, le processioni per il Santo Chiodo e le traslazioni delle reliquie di importanti santi locali. Le iniziative sul tessuto viario di Milano possono essere comprese solo alla luce dei contemporanei scontri tra protestanti e cattolici sulla validità della croce come icona (la più potente) e sul ruolo delle reliquie dei santi come intercessori. Nel saggio sono citati sia il massiccio attacco protestante (Calvino, Chemnitz, i Centuriatori di Magdeburgo e altri) sia la risposta cattolica (Martiall, Harpsfeld e Cope, Baronio ed altri). Le operazioni di Borromeo sono parte del contrattacco cattolico: egli insiste sull’efficacia delle reliquie e delle icone e sulla necessità di ospitarle adeguatamente entro splendidi contenitori (scrigni e chiese). L’elaborata cerimonia che accompagna la translatio delle reliquie di san Simpliciano (1582) è parte dello sforzo di legittimare il culto delle reliquie assieme alla testimonianza dell’antichità della chiesa milanese e della sua importanza per i nessi con Ambrogio, Agostino e Simpliciano. È stata ricostruita la straordinaria architettura effimera eretta per l’occasione di fronte al Duomo e in molte altre zone della città mentre il significato del suo apparato decorativo è stato correlato all’iconografia delle scene della vita di sant’Ambrogio (modello di vescovo paleocristiano e maggior ispiratore di Borromeo) raffigurate negli stalli del capitolo del coro della cattedrale milanese.

Abstract: Diffusa principalmente in area nordeuropea, la pratica di firmare i disegni si rivela ancora rara e inusuale tra i disegnatori italiani attivi dal primo Cinquecento. Un foglio poco noto conservato a Lisbona e attribuibile al pittore del Rinascimento lombardo Bernardino Luini (doc. 1501-1532) rappresenta il punto di partenza per riesaminare la funzione e il significato di scritte, annotazioni e firme sui alcuni disegni dell’artista. Avviata da Bernardino Luini, la tendenza a firmare composizioni su carta sarà adottata da suo figlio, l’artista Aurelio Luini (1530-1593) e promossa da altri artisti appartenenti all’Accademia della Val di Blenio – come Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo (1538-1592) – per i quali l’uso della parola scritta si rivela talvolta funzionale a comprendere il significato dei disegni.

Popularized in Northern Europe by draftsmen and engravers, the practice of signing drawings was still an uncommon one among artists active in Italy during the early Cinquecento. An overlooked drawing in Lisbon, signed by the Lombard Renaissance painter Bernardino Luini (doc. 1501 – 1532) offers the chance to review the numerous inscriptions and signatures left by this master on his rather small corpus of drawings and to evaluate their meaning and function. Extensively adopted by Luini, this practice was later embraced by his son, the artist Aurelio Luini (1530-1593) and by other Lombard masters gathered around the so-called Accademia della Val di Blenio - like Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo (1538-1592) - where the use of words was highly instrumental in explaining the subtle meanings of their drawn images.

L’opera degli artisti lombardi, veri e propri protagonisti dell’arte scultorea in Abruzzo fin dal Medioevo, si arricchisce di un nome, quello di Andrea Lombardo, che realizza nel 1471 il portale di Sant’Antonio Abate a Tossicia, sulle pendici del Gran Sasso, vero e proprio manifesto di un linguaggio che cerca nell’esasperazione delle forme e nell’esuberanza dei sentimenti una via nuova verso il Rinascimento. I modi di Andrea che prendono ispirazione dalla tradizione lombarda e dalle innovazioni dei grandi cantieri contemporanei tra Milano e Pavia, appaiono propagarsi nell’area aprutino-picena, nel piccolo Tabernacolo di Cellino Attanasio, vicino ad Atri, e nel monumentale Altare di Cola Pizzuti ad Ascoli Piceno.

Rivela come la rifondazione sforzesca dell'impianto urbano del Castello di Cotignola, avvenuta a seguito di un incendio che l'aveva ridotto ad un cumulo di cenere, sia frutto di una pianificazione definita da ordine e razionalità secondo uno schema geometrico regolare, con l'applicazione della proporzione aurea. Un tale riassetto urbanistico nella patria dinastica degli Sforza, sotto la spinta delle ambizioni politiche di Lodovico il Moro, trova spiegazione solo con l'intervento di Leonardo e Luca Pacioli, nel momento in cui al servizio del duca di Milano stavano lavorando al trattato sulla sezione aurea, il 'De Divina Proportione'. Cotignola quindi fu assunta a modello di 'città ideale', trattandosi di uno dei primi esempi di realizzazione in pieno Rinascimento.

Gli studi raccolti in questo volume sono dedicati al rapporto tra confraternite e città nel medioevo italiano. L'oggetto confraternita viene anzitutto affrontato sotto l'ottica di questioni generali: problemi di definizione e di lessico, di interpretazione storiografica, di contiguità con altre forme associative quali le corporazioni, prendendo come base di riferimento il contesto latamente italiano. Si passa quindi all'analisi di fenomeni via via più circostanziati: le reti confraternali di una regione storica, l'Emilia comunale, che si intrecciarono a movimenti religiosi e a schieramenti politici; e quindi le poliformi espressioni confraternali prodotte da una delle maggiori città del tempo, la Milano signorile e ducale.

The reconstruction of the duchy achieved by Filippo Maria between 1412 and 1421 is a vantage point to observe some of the deep structures on which the Milanese State relied. The analysis of the oaths of allegiance to the prince shows that the Lombard political society of the early fifteenth century did not fully coincide with the urban élites, and reveals a plurality of subjects (rural lords, lineages, communities, factions) capable to undertake political initiative at different levels.

The essay examines the fresco cycle of the Ducal Chapel of the milanese Sforza Castle, complementing the stylistic analysis of the paintings with a historical-documentary research regarding Galeazzo Maria Sforza and the peculiar nature of his patronage. On the one hand, the stylistic observations – in accordance with the latest studies – notice that the paintings, despite their late-gothic tone, turn out to be influenced in many aspects by the novelty of the Renaissance coming from the most important artistic centres of the Po Valley. On the other hand, the documentary material, which attests the duke’s strict control over the iconography and the style of the frescoes, allows to identify the programmatic cause of the decoration’s cortoise tone. Then, the study proceeds analysing the patronage’s archaic figurative tendency, taking into account the duke’s political purposes, and eventually identifies some specific points of connections between the cycle’s iconography and the thesis explained by "De regimine principum", a treatise of political science dedicated to Galeazzo Maria, which provides a justification of the princely power under a theological and metaphysical profile.

[En] Despite a progressively greater rigidity in the social hierarchy, the last centuries of the Middle Ages continued to witness the economic and social rise of individuals belonging to the "middle class". These hominis novi, without resorting to family claims, and often rejecting the associative model of the guilds, succeeded in achieving fortune and self-respect through commerce, enterprise, the exploitation of the land, local and parochial solidarity and the administration of charity. Emblematic of such ascent to fortune is the figure of a businessman of rural origin, Donato Ferrario da Pantigliate, who in 1429 founded in Milan a devotional and charitable institution, the Scuola della Divinità. It is the social, economic and spiritual life of this merchant which is reconstructed in this book, inserting it within the urban context of Milan during the first half of the fifteenth century. "

Магистерская работа посвящена прежде всего итальянскому и южнонемецкому станковому профильному портрету XV века. Целью работы является определение региональных особенностей и эволюции типа станкового профильного портрета в Европе в XV веке. Магистерская работа разбита на главы по хронологическому и территориальному признакам создания портретов или по признаку авторства в случае с художниками, работавшими в разных регионах. В целом работа включает введение с историографией, одну главу, где рассматриваются истоки формирования станкового профильного портрета и семь глав, посвящённых профильным портретам Венеции, Пизанелло, Пьеро делла Франческа, флорентийской, эмилианской, ломбардской школы и Южной Германии соответственно, и заключение, где систематизируются и обобщаются выводы, полученные из предыдущих глав.

The master's work is devoted primarily to the Italian and South German easel profile portrait of the 15th century. The aim of the work is to determine the regional characteristics and evolution of the type of easel profile portrait in Europe in the 15th century. The master's work is divided into chapters according to the chronological and territorial characteristics of the creation of portraits or according to the authorship in the case of artists who worked in different regions. In general, the work includes introduction and historiography, one chapter, which examines the origins of the formation of an easel profile portrait, seven chapters devoted to profile portraits of Venice, Pisanello, Piero della Francesca, the Florentine, Emilian, Lombard schools and Southern Germany respectively and conclusion, where the findings from the previous chapters are summarized.

In the second half of the XVth century, before the diplomatic balances that led to the birth of the regional states, the Italian rulers, in need of strategies to promote their public image, made their nuptials a powerful communication tool. Ceremonies, pageants and temporary architectures in honour of the newlyweds had the task of making explicit the alliances between the reigning houses of different principalities, visually expressing the power of the lords over their capitals.
This book’s aim is to understand how the festivities, orchestrated with court artists, became a means of celebratory propaganda and how the diffusion of their descriptions, in incunabula or manuscripts, heightened the fame of the events. The wedding feasts have been studied comparatively: comparing the variety of their theatrical performances, jousts and dances, as well as the ways of the production of the chronicles that handed down their memory, used here as sources for the history of the Renaissance spectacle.

[ENGLISH] Between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, some communities and families of the northern contado of Milan chose to side with the Visconti, not only ensuring their support to the latter’s effort to frame the various forces of the area, but also reinforcing the defenses along the river Adda. As a reward, Bernabò, Gian Galeazzo and their successors granted these communities and families an advantageous tax exemption. It was indeed to defend such considerable privilege that the restless and diversified people of the Brianza hills grouped themeselves together, drawn by the centripetal influence of the most powerful families, who dubbed themselves Ghibellini. The granting of such tax exemption and the important role played by these bonds contributed to the birth of a new sense of identity in Brianza, built primarily upon the institutional structure of the granted privilege. A new sense of identity that was strengthened, on the one hand, by the newborn territorial "Universitas Montis Briantie" and, on the other hand, by the power of the Lords of Milan.

[ITALIAN] Fra Tre e Quattrocento alcune comunità e famiglie del contado a nord di Milano si schierano fermamente a sostegno dei Visconti, coadiuvandoli nel loro tentativo di inquadrare le variegate forze del territorio e garantendo la difesa del confine sul fiume Adda. Come ricompensa Bernabò, Gian Galeazzo e i loro successori concedono a queste comunità e famiglie delle vantaggiose esenzioni fiscali: sono proprio queste esenzioni ad accomunare le numerose comunità rurali e le irrequiete famiglie delle colline briantee, cementandone il fronte in difesa della comune condizione privilegiata. Le parentele più influenti del territorio, tutte fortemente di fede ghibellina, svolgono in questo senso un’azione centripeta, atta a far nascere e sviluppare in Brianza un senso d’identità nuovo, costruito sul comune carico fiscale, ma anche intimamente politico, legato da una parte alla neonata Università territoriale del Monte di Brianza e dall’altra al potere dei signori di Milano.

Basandosi sulla documentazione notarile, il saggio analizza il trend della manifattura laniera milanese del secondo '400. Ne emerge un incremento globale della produzione-in particolare per gli articoli di lusso (saie e berretti) confezionati con lana inglese-negli ultimi tre decenni del secolo e all'inizio del successivo, dopo alcuni anni di difficoltà. La ripresa scaturì da diversi fattori concomitanti: la politica sforzesca volta a sostenere le produzioni di lusso; l'incremento della domanda di tessuti di lusso milanesi da parte della corte pontificia; il ruolo strategico della colonia di mercanti inglesi a Milano, importatori di materia prima ed esportatori di berretti a maglia tinti in grana. Tali mercanti erano collegati a uomini d'affari fiorentini e genovesi, e avevano interessi commerciali anche a Firenze.

Analyzing the notary documentation, this paper shows the trend of wool industry in Milan in the second half of the 15th century. The result is a global increase in production particularly for luxury items (saies and caps) packaged with English wool in the last three decades of the century and at the beginning of the next, after some years of difficulties. The recovery arose from several concomitant factors: the policy of the Sforza to support luxury production; the increase in papal court demand for Milanese luxury goods; the strategic role of the group of English merchants in Milan, importers of raw material and exporters of knitted caps dyed with cochineal, linked in turn to Florentine and Genoese businessmen, and with business interests in Florence as well. A partire dalla seconda metà del secolo XV, la nascente industria tipografica offrì ai principi e ai signori italiani un mezzo di comunicazione efficace per rendere ancor più noto il fasto dei propri festeggiamenti dinastici. Nel febbraio 1489, Isabella d’Aragona, nipote del re di Napoli, sposò a Milano il duca Gian Galeazzo Sforza. Pochi mesi dopo, per i tipi di Antonio Zarotto, furono edite le Nuptiae Ducis Mediolani di Stefano Dolcino, recanti un resoconto in latino dell’evento. Dell’opuscolo si ricostruiscono le vicende redazionali, cercando nelle sue carte indizi utili alla comprensione delle forme e dei significati degli spettacoli per l’occasione, insieme alle tracce di un uso sperimentale della stampa per presentare l’immagine del duca quale principe magnifico al pubblico dei lettori.
