Research Funding

Musicology is a small discipline within the wide spectrum of human knowledge, yet it is already divided into various branches, each with its own societies, conferences, journals, jargons, degrees, prejudices, …, and jobs. Although they share their object of investigation-"the art of music as a physical, psychological, aesthetic, and cultural phenomenon", these branches very often ignore one another. Research in musicology is mostly a solitary task, as investigations, papers, and publications are commonly signed by single authors, in contrast with STEM disciplines where teamwork is the rule. This is in part the result of tradition-the "Musicological Toolbox"-but also the aftermath of the job market and financing programs. Large funding schemes such as the European Research Council (ERC) grants are becoming a major disruptive factor in many disciplines in the humanities, including musicology. Scholars in all fields now have the opportunity to build research teams, and most of their members receive their salaries to exclusively work on the project. In other words, we are starting to build what could be called a Musicology Lab, learning along the way how teamwork is reshaping and transforming the Musicological Toolbox, the look and feel of our discipline, the way we work as well as the way we publish and disseminate our results. This paper presents some of the key features of the ERC Didone project, one of its principal tasks being to create a digitally encoded corpus of some 3,000 arias in MusicXML format from about 180 musical settings of a small number of opera librettos by Pietro Metastasio. It focuses on some of the project's research tasks, emphasizing how the skills of a team of eighteen scholars with very different expertise-historical musicology, music theory and analysis, cultural history, librettology, archival research, music performance, music engraving, MIR, computer science, and statistical modeling-combine to explore the potential answer(s) to the main research question of the project: How are emotions expressed through music?

With current constraints of public funding of research the question
of principal investigator (PI) success has gained prominence. Yet
understanding grant success remains problematic. While often
associated with peer acceptance of the proposal text, research
fundability in large part is informed by PI participation in the social
systems of research funding, knowledge making, and academic
work. This article reports on part of an in-depth longitudinal
exploration of how three expert science PIs in Canada navigate
and negotiate these contexts to achieve sustained grant funding
success. It focuses on how one of these scientists develops and
draws on collaborative research networks in creating fundable
front-line knowledge. The findings contribute towards an understanding
of the role experiential learning and individual agency
play in PI success. Practical implications for early-career researchers
are outlined. Further questions about the interconnectedness of PI
navigating and negotiating research funding and knowledge and
academic work are raised.

Azərbaycanda sosial rifahın yüksəlməsinə xidmət edən ixrac potensiallı, müasir texnologiyalar əsasında qurulan sənaye müəssisələri üçün ixtisaslaşmış işçi qüvvəsi və bu müəssisələrin rəqabət qabiliyyətini qorumaq üçün tədqiqat və təkmilləşdirmə işlərini apara bilən yüksək ixtisaslı kadrlar lazımdır. Həmin işçi qüvvəsini yaxşı qurulmuş təhsil sistemi təmin edirsə, yüksəkixtisaslı kadrları daha çox yaradıcı təfəkkürü inkişaf etdirən elmi fəaliyyət mühiti yetişdirir. Ölkənin 2012-ci ildə qəbul edilmiş «Azərbaycan 2020: Gələcəyə baxış» İnkişaf Konsepsiyasında elmə diqqətin yerli xüsusiyyətlər və qlobal meyillər nəzərə alınmaqla prioritetləşdiriləcəyi, mütərəqqi dünya elminə səmərəli inteqrasiya prosesinin davam etdiriləcəyi, habelə ölkədə innovativ iqtisadiyyatın yaradılması məqsədi ilə elm və istehsal arasındakı əlaqələrin gücləndiriləcəyi, tətbiqi elmi araşdırmaların bazarın tələbatına müvafiq aparılması üçün zəruri mexanizmlərin yaradılacağı hədəf olaraq göstərilib [Azərbaycan Respublikası Prezidentinin Administrasiyası, 2012]. Bunlar 2016-cı ildə qəbul edilmiş Azərbaycan Elminin İnkişaf Doktrinasında da ehtiva edilmişdir [Azərbaycan Milli Elmlər Akademiyası, 2016a]. Məqalədə bu hədəflər nəzərə alınaraq ölkədə elmi fəaliyyət prosesi aparıcı ölkələrdəki vəziyyətlə müqayisəli təhlil edilmiş, onu təkmilləşdirmək və stimullaşdırmaq üçün konseptual təkliflər verilmişdir.

This article attempts to compare the state of the Research and Development (R&D) in the Republic of Azerbaijan with the practices of the leading countries in this area. Drawing from the best practices around the world, it proposes conceptual recommendations for the policymakers regarding the optimal distribution of R&D expenditures among the research areas (basic, applied, experimental); possible ways for the State to stimulate and direct diverse R&D activities in line with its strategic development goals; the issues of intellectual inbreeding, research ethics, research misconduct, predatory publishing; evaluation of researchers and assessment of research activities.

Mental and brain disorders represent the greatest health burden to Europe—not only for directly affected individuals, but also for their caregivers and the wider society. They incur substantial economic costs through direct (and indirect) health-care and welfare spending, and via productivity losses, all of which substantially affect European development. Funding for research to mitigate these effects lags far behind the cost of mental and brain disorders to society. Here, we describe a comprehensive, coordinated mental health research agenda for Europe and worldwide. This agenda was based on systematic reviews of published work and consensus decision making By multidisciplinary scientific experts and affected stakeholders (more than 1000 in total): individuals with mental health problems and their families, health-care workers, policy makers, and funders. System development for Image-Guided Therapy (IGT), or Image-Guided Interventions (IGI), continues to be an area of active interest across academic and industry groups. This is an emerging field that is growing rapidly: major academic institutions and medical device manufacturers have produced IGT technologies that are in routine clinical use, dozens of high-impact publications are published in well regarded journals each year, and several small companies have successfully commercialized sophisticated IGT systems. In meetings between IGT investigators over the last two years, a consensus has emerged that several key areas must be addressed collaboratively by the community to reach the next level of impact and efficiency in IGT research and development to improve patient care. Science policies emphasizing the advanced qualification of human resources, together with democratizing access to science and internationalizing the science base, are shown to help
build the conditions needed to drive brain gain over time.
Exploring a new set of data for the period 1970–2010 in Portugal, this paper focuses on the analysis of flows of doctorates, with the ultimate goal of helping to promote the absorptive capacity that emerging regions and countries worldwide need to acquire to learn how to use science for economic and social development. It shows a notable process of brain gain by the end of this period and, above all, it provides a dynamic approach to the cumulative process of building knowledge-based societies. The results show the need to consider the co-evolution of brain gain, brain drain and brain circulation over time and space. In addition, they suggest the
importance of certain major counter-intuitive policy instruments to facilitate the co-evolution of human capital formation and research capacity building. In the case of Portugal, these instruments have included a centralized program of research grants, research careers independent of traditional
academic career tracks, and a diversified system of funding research units and institutions based on research assessments through international peer reviews.

Iran's simple and environmentally extended commodity by commodity input-output (IO) model was used to determine the impacts of dietary changes on the Iranian economy and on the environmental load. The original model is based on the status-quo diet and was modified to include the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and Mediterranean alternative dietary scenarios. A range of impacts occurred depending upon the relative changes in food items. The direction of changes was similar in the three alternative scenarios. The greatest and smallest impact occurred in the WHO and the Mediterranean scenarios respectively. Total changes in output in WHO, WCRF and Mediterranean dietary scenarios were calculated to be 7010.1, 4802.8 and 3330.8 billion Rials respectively. The outputs of rice, vegetables, fruit, bread and macaroni decreased, but those of live and other animal products increased. The output of non-food commodities and services increased as well. ...

Water rights as a fundamental human rights arises from the human right to life. Such a formulation shows the special meaning of water as a resource for every person. Human right to life derives from the right to a healthy environment, health, food, education, work and working conditions, and other socioeconomic rights that are important for every person and for which the state has an obligation to care. The right to water as a basic human right directly affects the exercise of these rights. This study analyzes water conflicts that have had a direct impact on the human right to life and the right to water as a fundamental human right, and to other enumerated rights. Conflicts are characteristic for every basin in our country. Poor management of water resources is another aspect that analyzes this paper. The analysis explains why the right to water should be implemented as a basic human right. It will also be illustrated why water conflicts have occurred and what indicates their distribution on the territory of the state.

Ünlü eğitim psikoloğu Robert Slavin'in Eğitim Psikolojisi kitabının onuncu baskısı, kuramı uygulamaya aktarma konusunda önemli bir eksikliği gidermekte ve öğretmenlerin sınıfta ihtiyaç duyabilecekleri alanlarda uygulayabilecekleri bilgileri içermektedir.

Kitap, yansıtıcı ve bilinçli bir öğretmenin uygulayabileceği en yeni araştırmaları sunarak, bilinçli öğretmen üzerine odaklanmaktadır. Slavin'e göre bilinçli öğretmen, uygulamasını devamlı surette yansıtan ve bu uygulamaların öğrencileri nasıl etkilediği hakkında net bir düşünceye dayalı olarak öğretim kararları veren kişidir.

Bu kitapta okuyucular alanda önemli ve yeni ortaya çıkan bazı konular ile karşılaşmaktadır. Bu konulardan bazıları; 21. yüzyıl becerileri, ilk yıllarda dil ve okuma yazmanın gelişimi, iki dilli eğitim, nöroloji alanındaki yeni araştırmalar, iş birliğine dayalı öğrenme konusundaki son araştırmalar, okumada sorun yaşayan okuyucular için özel yardım, küçük gruplarla çalışma ve bilişim alanındaki en yeni araştırmalar, gelişmeler ve uygulamalardır. En ince ayrıntısına kadar güncel olan alıntılar, kitabın en güncel araştırmalar üzerine temellendirildiğinin bir göstergesidir. Bu kitapta, 656 yeni ve güncellenmiş kaynak bulunmaktadır. Bu kaynakların % 55'i 2000 yılı sonrasına aittir.

Robert Slavin, akademik derinliğini sergilerken aynı zamanda sanki ders anlatır gibi okuyucuları ile yüz yüze buluşmayı da amaçlamaktadır. Kitap yeni ve farklı bir yaklaşımla pek çok teorik bilgiyi uygulamalı olarak sunan, teorik bilgilerin kavramsal olarak uygulamaya nasıl dönüştürüleceğini göstererek öğretmeyi amaçlayan ve bunda başarılı olduğu açıkça belli olan iyi bir başvuru ve ders kitabı olarak öğrencilere ve eğiticilere önerilmektedir.

Uzmanlar, klinisyenler ve araştırmacılar, yeme bozukluklarının duygusal düzensizliklerden kaynaklandığı vakalarda Diyalektik Davranış Terapisinin etkin olacağı konusunda hemfikirdi. Alanda yapılan pek çok adaptasyon çalışması olmasına rağmen Debra Safer, Christy Telch ve Eunice Chen bunu deneysel bazda yapan ilk kişilerdir. Standart diyalektik davranış terapisinin, tıkanırcasına yeme bozukluğu ve blumia nervoza semptomlarını tedavi etme yollarının yapılandırılmış bir özetini sunan bu kitap ile alandaki ihtiyaca cevap vermişlerdir. Bu alanda çalışan klinik psikologların ve danışmanların mutlaka okuması gereken önemli bir kaynak olmakla birlikte bu alanda okuyan öğrenciler için de farklı bir bakış açısı kazandırmaktadır.
Dokuz bölümden oluşan bu kitapta tedavi kapsamlı olarak ele alınmıştır. Genel çerçevede, olumsuz duygularla başa çıkmanın daha uyumsal yollarını öğreten becerilerin kazanımı ile tıkanırcasına yeme ve boşaltmayı durdurma hedefine ulaşma yolu adım adım çizilmiştir. Blumia nervoza ve tıkanırcasına yeme bozukluğuna sahip insanların karılaştığı sorunlar ve mevcut tedavi yöntemleri ele alınarak okuyucuya genel bir bakış açısı kazandırılır. Standart terapinin detaylı bir şekilde tanıtımından sonra bunun adaptasyonunun neden gerekli olduğu, adapte etmenin mantığı mevcut kanıtlar ile sunulur. Daha sonra, tedavi öncesi ve başlangıç oturumlarından tedaviyi sonlandırmaya kadar olan süreç aşama aşama ele alınır. Nüksetmeyi önleme kısmına değinilir. Son olarak kapsamlı vaka örnekleri ile anlatılanların sağlam temeller üzerine oturması sağlanır.
Amacına uygun şekilde düzenlen bu kitap, diyalektik davranış terapisi adapte edilirken belirli sınırlar çizmek yerine okuyucuya geliştirilebilir bir zemin hazırlar. Bu yönüyle tedaviyi uygulamaya ve geliştirmeye teşvik eder. Açıklayıcı vaka örnekleri ve kanıtlar ile tedaviyi tüm ayrıntılarıyla sunarak farklı alanlardan okuyuculara hitap eden bu titiz çalışma özellikle alandaki uzmanlara klinik psikologlara, danışmanlara ve araştırmacılar için bir rehber niteliğinde olacak niteliktedir.

Genelde canlıların, özelde ise insanoğlunun nasıl öğrendiğine dair araştırma sonuçları her geçen gün önümüze heyecan verici bilgiler ve bulgular sunmaktadır. SHORT TERM library fellowships are quite likely the single most common kind of
national research grant given out to scholars in the humanities. The Massachusetts
Historical Society alone gives out twenty short-term library fellowships. Almost every major private university and scholarly library (including the Huntington, Newberry, Yale’s Beinecke, Harvard’s Houghton, and the New- York Historical Society),
many public universities (such as the University of Texas, Austin), many major pub-
lic libraries (such as the Boston Public Library and the New York Public Library),
and many small specialized research libraries administrate these types of grants.
They are often modest in their monetary amounts (ranging from $1,500 to $4,000) and almost always distributed directly to the individual scholar.

They rarely cause much of a blip on the radar of most college and university accountsthat track billion-dollar National Science Foundation grants or large institution-sponsored foundation awards such as those from the National Endowment for the Humanities or from the United States Department of State’s Fulbright program.  Nonetheless, these modest library grants provide critical footholds for emerging careers. They provide money that isn’t modest to an underpaid assistant professoror struggling graduate student, and they provide critical logistical, emotional, and scholarly support.

They usually presume a scholar will be in residence at the institution for any period between two to eight weeks, their applications tend to be fairly short, don’t need extensive signatures or approvals from university officials, andusually require only two or three recommendations. Moreover, if you can win one,do good work, and produce a “deliverable” in the form of a peer-reviewed publication, you might well have launched yourself on a roll of scholarly awards. Money begets money.

This Impact Report identifies and summarises the diverse impacts, resulting from the £500m of UK funding of Science and Technology in 2013, using numerous quantitative metrics and short case study extracts.  It shows how the varied impacts of a national science and technology organization and its many funded programmes can be annually identified, captured, tracked, and summarised in a public document.

The report was produced for, and by, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) -  the UK Research Council responsible for funding: (1) all UK astronomy, particle and nuclear physics research, (2) related UK science and technology facilities (e.g. as Harwell and Daresbury), (3) the UK contribution to international science (e.g. CERN, international telescopes and space missions), (4) innovation and business spin-off programmes, and (5) UK public engagement activities.

The Report was co-researched and co-authored by the STFC Impact Team, including myself while Impact Evaluation Manager in 2013, with Dr. Claire Dougan-McCallie (lead author/Head of Impact) and Jenny Beard, with additional input from senior managers, and many data and case study contributions from other key managers across STFC.

Varied key impacts are identified and reported including:

• Research amongst the best (by citation impact) in astronomy, nuclear and particle physics.
• Supported research of 226 Principal Investigators in 70 universities, led to 1,100 peer-reviewed papers in 2012.
• Facilities (the Diamond Light Source, ISIS and CLF) were used in 2012/13 by over 4,200 unique users , in over 2,400 experiments, producing over 1,000 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

• Technology from CERN benefited the UK economy by over £100 billion every year.
• Funding the development of the UK’s space, internet and computer animation industries, returned over £500 billion to the UK economy per annum.
• Funded Innovation Campuses hosted over 230 enterprises and supported over 5,000 jobs.
• UK industry won £43 million in contracts from the international subscriptions funded, and had accumulated a total of £150 million since 2005.

• Funded research inspired future generations to study STEM subjects, attracting 90% of UK undergraduates to study physics, funded 782 PhD students  and 16,800 student training days.
• Between 2009 to 2012 public engagement programmes engaged people on 58 million occasions, with 2 million people engaged in face-to-face activities in 2013 alone.

The thesis presents a reformative criticism of science funding by peer review. The criticism is
based on epistemological scepticism, regarding the ability of scientific peers, or any other agent, to have access to sufficient information regarding the potential of proposed projects at the time of funding. The scepticism is based on the complexity of factors contributing to the merit of scientific projects, and the rate at which the parameters of this complex system change their values. By constructing models of different science funding mechanisms, a construction supported by historical evidence, computational simulations show that in a significant subset of cases it would be better to select research projects by a lottery mechanism than by selection based on peer review. This last result is used to create a template for an alternative funding mechanism that combines the merits of peer review with the benefits of random allocation, while noting that this alternative is not so far removed from current practice as may first appear.

While many countries have developed and expanded efforts to sustain and enhance the protection of biodiversity, the effectiveness of such programs, as well as the manner in which funds are distributed, has been questioned. We examined funding allocation decisions for species conservation in Spain at different governmental scales. Several factors that may impact conservation spending patterns and policy decisions were examined, including available scientific data, current scientific policies, and public awareness and perceptions of conservation needs. Our analyses revealed a strong connection between existing conservation policies and scientific information, research priorities and public concern. We found that there is a substantial bias in the taxa that are studied, the funding levels for those studies and public policy which triggers and supports the studies. The relationships, however, are not strictly cause and effect, but are instead enmeshed in a complex feed-back system in which conventional scientific activity acts as the main driver but is itself influenced by both policy and public perception. By acknowledging both the essential role of science in this system and the critical factors that can influence the acquisition of scientific information, a constructive dialog can be established that will propel conservation activities to a more productive and environmentally sound outcome.

Buraya kadar sözü edilen bu becerileri kapsayan kitabın hem bilgi vermesi hem de Türk akademisyen ve düşünürleri tarafından bu konuda yeni eserlerin kaleme alınmasını, araştırma yapılmasını teşvik etmesi hedeflenmektedir. Kitabın hedef kitlesi, matematik bilimlerinde ve sosyal bilimlerde eğitim gören öğrenciler ve akademisyenler, politikacılar, medya mensupları ilk akla gelenler arasındadır. 21. yüzyıl becerileri arasında ilk sıralarda yer alan eleştirel düşünme becerisini stratejik ve sistematik olarak nasıl geliştirilebileceğini anlatan bu kitap, okuyucular için hem günlük yaşamda hem de profesyonel hayatta kullanabilecekleri önemli reçeteler vermektedir. Grants from the European Research Council (ERC) stand out in the landscape of research funding. They’re awarded on the basis of ‘excellence’ alone, in a joint evaluation of the project and the applicant. Recipients lead a project team for up to five years, in an aura of accomplishment and with the freedom to pursue a scientific passion.

Starting my own ERC project marked the end of a five-year rollercoaster journey. In this essay I use experiences from that ride to reflect on the work of developing a proposal and to extract advice for future applicants.

Grants from the ERC represent academia at its most competitive and individualistic. But, like most other grantees, I have benefitted from being part of mutually supportive communities. Sharing my experience is a way of extending this spirit.

The most important lessons I have learned concern the narrativity of the proposal. These insights are illustrated by the cover photo: images, like text, can have a high degree of narrativity, invoking a sense of temporally and causally related events. In the text I use examples of funded proposals to pin down what characterizes a narrative hook that conveys specific and persuasive innovation – the ‘ground-breaking’ essence that the ERC calls for.

There is no blueprint for succeeding with ERC funding. Every project is different and the evaluation necessarily has a strong element of arbitrariness. However, the process of writing a proposal can be a rewarding experience regardless of the outcome. It takes thorough thinking about what research can be, why it can make a difference, and how it can be depicted with well-chosen words and carefully crafted sentences.

İnovasyonun On Tipi kitabı ile inovasyon yapmak isteyenlere reçete veriliyor. Adım adım ve yalın bir şekilde inovasyonun nasıl geliştirilebileceği konusunda önemli sırlar ortaya koyuluyor. Bu kitap, özellikle teknoloji odaklı inovasyon yapmak isteyenlere yapılan hataları da göstererek uygulama ortamı oluşturuyor. Yenilik ilkelerini verirken startupların ve hatta büyük kuruluşların anlamlı ve sürdürülebilir büyüme konusundaki donanımını artırıyor. 2000'den fazla başarılı yeniliğin ortaya çıkışında önemli içgörüler sağlıyor.
Bu kitabın anlatım tarzında özel bir algoritma uygulanarak anlamlı gruplar belirlendi. İnovasyon fırsatlarını belirlemek için firmaların iç ve dış büyüme parametreleri ve performans değerleri, rakiplerini de devreye alarak şekillendirildi. İnovasyon odaklı performansın artırılabilmesi, önemli değerlendirmeler yapılabilmesi için özel ve hazır yol haritaları sunuldu. Endüstriler için de inovasyon modellerini teşhis edip yeni bir anlayış ve yöntem geliştirme imkânı sunuluyor.
Çevrimsel araştırmanın altyapısını vererek farklı ve anlamlı değişim ve dönüşümü düşündürüp kalıcı ve kullanışlı yollar uygulatarak kitabın ne kadar değerli olduğunu kanıtlıyor. Bu kitabın yazarlarından Larry Keeley'in tecrübelerinden yararlanmak büyük bir fırsat. Kendisi BusinessWeek tarafından inovasyon alanındaki dünya görüşünü ve paradigmaları değiştiren, yedi yenilik gurusundan biri olarak seçilmiş olup Doblin firmasının kurucusudur. Diğer yazarlar ile birlikte inovasyonun tasarlanması ve sürdürülebilir kılınması konusunda dünya çapında pek çok girişimciyi, yöneticiyi, şirketleri ve startupları etkilemiştir.

تشكل المشروعات الصغيرة العصب الرئيسي لاقتصاد أي دولة، حيث تعتبر من أهم روافد عملية التنمية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية في جميع دول العالم عامةً وفي الدول النامية خاصة،  فهي لا تعمل على توفير فرصٍ عمل وبالتالي مصدرٍ دخل لقطاع عريض من الأفراد فحسب، بل تشكل أيضاً دافعاً رئيسياً للمزيد من الابتكارات والتكنولوجيا وتنوع الصادرات، لذلك أصبح الاهتمام بهذا النوع من المشروعات توجهاً استراتيجياً لدى العديد من الدول.
وقد اعتمدت العديد من الدول على المشروعات الصغيرة في عملية البناء الاقتصادي،  واستطاعت من خلالها العبور من دائرة الدول الفقيرة لتدخل في مصاف الدول الغنية الكبرى.
والأمثلة على ذلك كثيرة ومتعددة على جميع المستويات؛ فتلك النوعية من المشروعات هي صاحبة الفضل الأساسي في نمو وتقدم وازدهار دول شرق أسيا، كما أن الهند والصين لكل منهما تجربة ناجحة مع تلك المشروعات، حيث استطاعت من خلالها تحقيق أكبر معدلات في التنمية الدولية.
إلا أن هناك مجموعة من المشاكل التي تقف عقبة أمام قيام ونمو هذه المشروعات، وعلى رأسها مشكلة التمويل، فأصحاب هذه المشروعات عادة ما يكونون من المهنيين ولا تتوافر لديهم  مدخرات تمكنهم من إقامة مشروعاتهم ، كما لا يوجد لديهم من الضمانات التي يمكن تقديمها للمصارف للحصول بموجبها على قروض - فالمشروعات الصغيرة تعتبر من أوجه الاستثمار عالي المخاطر لذلك فالمصارف تطلب عادة ضمانات يعجز أصحاب هذه المشروعات من توفيرها- هذا بالإضافة إلى وجود عدد لا بأس به ممن يجتنبون مطلقاً الاقتراض من المصارف التقليدية لأسباب دينية.
وهنا يبرز دور المصارف والمؤسسات المالية الإسلامية في تنمية وتطوير المشروعات الصغيرة بما تمثله من أهداف وخصائص - وذلك من خلال تقديم التمويل اللازم لها و بما يتوافق مع أحكام الشريعة الإسلامية، باعتبار أن بعض صيغ التمويل التي يقوم بتقديمها تناسب طبيعة المشروعات الصغيرة.

As private sector archaeologists in Ireland struggle to cope with the negative effects of the recent development meltdown, this article analyses the relationship between the ‘developer pays’ principle and the ongoing problem of non-publication of excavations and other issues.

In the era of the 21st century, the best higher education institutions have more than one role. Not only do they educate and train students but they also create new ideas and knowledge for the short-term contemporary issues as well as long-term complex problems. In the strategic goals, five aspects are critical in higher education: the democratization of knowledge and access, the contestability of the market and funding, the research technologies, the global mobility and the integration with the industry. Universities should have strategic plans including strategic goals. In this study, the strategic models and plans of the public (5) and private (5) universities are analysed from the five different aspects. In order to deeply understand the dynamics at these universities, the phenomenological interpretive analysis is preferred. University leaders
and managerial departments should consider market needs and do strategic plan accordingly. Hence, they should develop the strategic thinking capacity of both their academic staff and researchers for short and long terms need of the industry. Results have shown that most universities have wrong perception regarding the strategic model and plan. Neither private nor public universities possess enough knowledge on the subject.

Anksiyete; kaygı veya başka bir deyişle endişe insanların deneyimlediği bir korku ve gerilim halidir. Bazı görüşlere göre yaşanan iç çatışmaların sonucudur. Bazılarına göre ise öğrenilmiş davranışlardır. Denetim dışına çıkıp kişinin işlevselliğini aksattığında rahatsızlık olarak adlandırılır.

Eskiden insanların ortalama ömürleri otuz beş yılken ve kendi küçücük dünyalarında yaşarken çoğu kez endişeli olmaya fırsatları olmazdı ve anksiyeteden söz edilmezdi. Oysa, globalleşmenin dünyayı adeta kocaman bir ülkeye dönüştürmesi , mobil teknolojilerin ve sosyal medyanın günbegün hayatımıza sirayeti, bilgisayarların gitgide insan gücünün yerini alması, rekabetin hızla artması, stresli yaşam koşulları ve tarihte hiç olmadığı kadar çok sayıda seçenek arasından karar verme mecburiyeti günümüzde anksiyeteyi en yaygın zihinsel rahatsızlık konumuna getirmiştir. Günümüzde sadece ABD'de yılda 40 milyon kişi anksiyete rahatsızlığından muzdarip olmakta, her dört kişiden biri ise hayatının bir noktasında onunla mücadele etmektedir.

Aksiyete Çağı'm adlı kitapta The Atlantic adlı derginin editörü olan yazar Scott Stossel, kendi yaşadığı ve hayatını etkileyen anksiyete sorununu keşfetmek üzere çıktığı cesur yolculuğu okurlarla paylaşmaktadır.
