This paper presents a design study of the visualization interface to the Myant Skiin Connected Life App (Skiin), a family informatics application which will connect family members, friends, and caregivers, by engaging them together and enabling health and wellness related data sharing and support. It is based on Myant's highly accurate intelligent textiles garments which collect activity and related biomechanical data through knitted sensors on the garment. Our design seeks to deliver a seamless user experience between this complex of technologies through effective data presentation, visualization, and tool tips. One of Skiin's differentiators is the provision of a communication overlay (the Aura) which cues users to view metrics data and engage in dialogue around its meaning. We undertook a comprehensive literature review and examination of related work that included personal informatics, mHealth applications, and family informatics-motivation and social communication, wellness standards for older adults, technology adoption by older adults, effective design, and visualization strategies to support aging individuals, their family, friends, and support team, and issues of privacy. We used iterative prototyping to build and revise the visualization interface. We discuss our visualization methods, detail the resulting Skiin application, our usability testing strategy which combines personas, Talk Aloud and SUS approaches, research outcomes, and next steps.

Extensive efforts have been made in the research and development of smart textile systems in recent years. One of these developments in smart materials is shape memory applications. Shape memory materials (SMM) are smart materials that can remember and recover substantial programmed deformation upon activation and exposing to an external stimulus such as chemicals, temperature, pH, light, a magnetic field, etc. Shape memory materials have been used in many areas and textile application of this technology has covered a wide usage recently.
Today’s textile concept isn’t the similar to past and expectations of people from textile have been changing more and more. In this point, shape memory materials can answer these needs in textile due to it’s smart features. Shape-memory materials can be used in textile as clothing, yarn and fabric. The application possibilities are only limited by our imagination and creativity, so shape-memory productions have been able to gain a different aspect to textile.

Smart textiles, encompassing electronics combined with textiles also called textronics, have a very promising realm in science and technology nowadays because of commercial viability and public interests. Smart textiles play a significant role as well in the European textile sector and assist the textile industry in its transformation into a competitive knowledge driven industry. These kinds of textiles combine knowledge from many disciplines with the specific requirements of textile. Numerous materials and systems are available together with devices for sensing and actuation, but they are not compatible with a textile or with the textile production processes. They could be transformed into a textile compatible structure or even in a full textile structure. Smart textiles can be defined as textiles that are able to sense and respond to changes in their environment. They may be divided into two classes: passive and active smart textiles. Passive smart textiles have the ability to change their properties according to an environmental stimulation. Shape memory materials, hydrophobic or hydrophilic textiles etc. make part of this category. Active smart textiles are fitted with sensors and actuators, in order to connect internal parameters to the transmitted message. They are able to detect different signals from the environment (temperature, light intensity, pollution…), to decide how to react and finally to act using various textile based, flexible or miniaturized actuators (textile displays, micro vibrating devices, LED, OLED…). The "decision" can be taken locally in case of embedded electronic devices (textile electronics) to smart textile structures or remotely in case the smart textile is wirelessly connected to clouds containing data base, servers with artificial intelligence software etc. and may be a part of Internet of Things (IoT) concept. This presentation focuses on smart textiles actuators used as active and passive flexible displays.

In recent years, intelligent textiles that can interact with human body and surrounding environment have gained an important place in fashion design practices. Intelligent textiles offer great opportunities to open up new horizons for fashion designers due to their totally new features and functionalities. When examined from the technological point of view many researches about the intelligent garments are seen to be conducted. Such products should be also studied in relation to different disciplines such as textile technology, engineering, sports, entertainment, health, sociology, visual arts regarding with the fashion design. Besides scientific and technical processes for the development of intelligent textiles, in terms of fashion trend researches that determine the consumer reflexes, the questions regarding how intelligent textiles can be transformed to garment forms, how they connect with the consumers in a visual manner, how they will affect the social relationships and communication are still of importance. In this study, fashion trends which appeared after 1990s are investigated under “modern tendencies” and “postmodern tendencies” titles, and fashion design practices using intelligent textiles are classified under these titles. The aim of the study is to make prospective suggestions for fashion designers by finding common points between intelligent textiles which are subjects of technical researches and fashion trends which are marketing activities intended for consumers.

It has been seen great advances in technology in recent years. One of these advances has become in smart textile. Although there are many different definitions, usually smart textiles can be defined " sense and respond to environmental stimuli ". They have been different application areas such as e-textiles, nano textiles, technical textiles, etc. In the last decades, e-textiles developments come to the fore in the smart textiles. E-textiles contain some digital, electronical circuits, sensors and textile based materials such as conductive fiber, yarn and fabrics. A lot of products can be made in this industry but the effects of environmental stimulis such as human perspiring on these products are not examined so much. In this study, it was examined the conductivity of e-textile fabrics in the changing different pH values according to gender. Acidic and alkaline solutions have been applied on conductive fabrics and results have been examined with SEM and resistance measure. As a result of the study, it is found that perspiration doesn't affect the conductivity on conductive textile surface badly. In contrast, conductivity has the better result when perspiration solution used. Conductivity increased for each pattern and pH solutions because of decreasing resistance.

In the last few years, many countries showed an increased public
awareness regarding the consequences of the demographic change, which
presents considerable challenges on future health care systems in the next decades.
As a framework of the research presented here, we introduce a currently
running interdisciplinary research project in which novel textile input devices
are to be developed, iteratively designed, and evaluated. In order to learn about
the individual requirements for using smart textiles in a home context, we carried
out a exploratory questionnaire study in which 72 participants (aged 20-76)
evaluated perceived benefits and barriers of smart textiles in the home context.
Results show a first insight into user experience and the general willingness to
adopt smart textile input devices. Also, the perceived suitability of functions to
be controlled by those novel input devices as well as the reported appropriateness
of different rooms and general device styles into which smart input devices
could be integrated were collected. Results show, overall, a high willingness of
participants to use smart textiles as input devices.

ABSTRACT
The object of study under analysis is the costume design for the performance art, involved in an action field where fashion is understood as a contemporary work of art, contributing to evoke emotions. For this, the usage of new textile technologies is fundamental in the creation of the signifying shape, which will be dynamic and interactive, supporting the performer during the performance, in an ever more narrow relationship between what he/she expresses and what the attire represents.
The problematic at stake exposes the lack of true response to psychological stimuli from the wearer by the intelligent and semi-intelligent prototypes, and therefore an absence of deliberate communication of specific emotions. The truly cognitive contribution of the clothing in question is in comprising the bidirectional communication between performer/audience, framed by the environment stimuli, in which a costume gains meaning. The combination of technology and cognition summarizes the co-experience in which they find themselves involved, regarding that particular action field.
It’s therefore necessary to understand the interrelationships and interaction levels between the textile surface and its bearer (the body), converging simultaneously functional and emotional territories, so as to allow the development of costumes that react to stimuli, placing both the wearer and the environment as actuators of specific functions. To ally science and art in a design practice that encompasses concepts such as interaction design, co-design and participatory design, it’s appropriate to turn to a mixt methodology, noninterventionist and interventionist and of qualitative basis.
In clothing that unites form and background, context and subject, performer and spectator, the innovation itself lies in the reciprocal contribution to the fields of design and textile engineering. We expected, with this investigation, to approach the intelligence in textiles to the one that has invented it (the human being’s), combining notions of materiality and immateriality. Having the dynamism in clothing and the interaction it provides linked to the focus in the redefinition of the body as a mirror of the mind, we challenge the conceptual and plastic limits of fashion.
