Der Beitrag bietet einen Überblick über die Position der Schulen der deutschen Minderheit in der 1. Slowakischen Republik. Auf Grund des Archivmaterials weist der Autor auf das Funktionieren der Schulen in ausgewählten Gemeinden der Slowakischen Republik, sowie auch auf die Probleme zwischen der deutschen und slowakischen Bevölkerung hin.
Nach der Entstehung der Slowakischen Republik (SR) wurden auch Schulen mit einer anderen Unterrichtssprache als Slowakisch ins Schulsystem aufgenommen (z. B. Deutsch, Ungarisch, Ukrainisch). Das Schulwesen der deutschen Minderheit erlebte in der Zeit der Slowakischen Republik einen enormen Aufschwung, was sich in seiner Ausdehnung, Organisation und finanziellen Sicherung manifestiert hat. Es wurde das Ministerium für Schulwesen und Volkskultur gegründet, innerhalb dessen die "Deutsche Abteilung" unabhängig war. Ihre Aktivitäten begannen am 1. März 1939 und ihre Amtssprache war Deutsch. Sie erledigte die Organisations-, Wirtschafts-, Haushalts- und Finanzagenda des deutschen Bildungssystems in der Slowakei.
In diesem Artikel widmen wir die Aufmerksamkeit der zunehmenden Spannungen nach 1938 und dem Einfluss des Dritten Reiches auf das Gebiet der Slowakischen Republik, die auch das Schulsystem betraf. Es kam zu mehreren Änderungen zwischen 1939 und 1944. Deutsche Schulen entstanden nicht nur in den Gemeinden mit der deutschen Bevölkerung, sondern auch in slowakischen Gemeinden (in 1943 waren deutsche Schulen in 161 Gemeinden in der Slowakei). Bis dahin wurden die gemeinsamen Schulen mit der Unterrichtssprache Deutsch und Slowakisch organisatorisch immer mehr unabhängig, während die Deutschklassen zu Gemeindevolksschulen umgestaltet wurden. In dem Artikel beschreiben wir die Probleme zwischen slowakischen und deutschen Volksschulen. Wir konzentrieren die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Streitigkeiten, die an mehreren Orten bei der Einschreibungen der Schüler an die deutsche oder slowakische Schule entstanden.
Während des Krieges wurden in vielen Gemeinden die Beziehungen zwischen der deutschen und slowakischen Bevölkerung gestört. Einige Personen deutscher Nationalität zwangen die Slowaken, ihre Kinder in eine deutsche Schule zu schicken. In einigen Dörfern kam es zu Streitigkeiten bei der Registrierung von Schülern an deutsche oder slowakische Schulen. Es passierte nicht selten, dass in die deutsche Klassen solche Schüler eingeschrieben wurden, die überhaupt nicht mehr schulpflichtig waren, oder sie nicht mehr im Dorf wohnten.
Der Status der deutschen Bevölkerung und die deutsch-slowakischen Beziehungen haben den Slowakischen Nationalaufstand dramatisch geprägt. Am Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges im Jahre 1945 wurden die meisten Bürger deutscher und ungarischer Nationalität vertrieben und ihre Schulen waren verstaatlicht. Diesem ging in vielen Fällen die Evakuierung deutscher Schüler und Lehrer und das damit verbundene Untergang deutscher Schulen voran.

die Zusammenhänge mit der Entfaltung des Bergbaus gerichtete Ergebnisse der architektonisch-historischen Erforschung der Kirche

Die Kirche Mariä Himmelfahrt in Göllnitz (Gelnica) bildet eine der Dominanten dieser
Bergstadt. Zusammen mit ihrer Umgebung und der den Friedhof umfassenden Mauer prägt
dieser Bau nicht nur die Silhouette der Stadt, sondern auch das urbanisierte Umland. Es geht
um ein Beispiel eines architektonischen Bauwerkes als fortgeschrittenen Typus einer dreischiffi gen
gotischen sakralen Architektur mit dem vorstehenden Westturm, der im Zipser-Gemerer Gebiet
im 14. Jahrhundert in den entwickelten Städten zu fi nden ist. Obwohl die Kirche mehrere
bedeutende Umbauten und Erneuerungen erfahren hat, ist ihre ursprüngliche Disposition
in der dreischiffi gen Form mit dem langen polygonal abgeschlossenen Presbyterium und dem
nördlichen Anbau der frühgotischen Sakristei, wie auch dem neogotischen Westturm bewahrt.
Die Architektur der Göllnitzer Kirche spiegelt die Entwicklung dieser Bergstadt wider, was auch
in ihrer Bauentwicklung und künstlerische Ausgestaltung mit bergmännischen Motiven bezeugt
wird. Die Autoren präsentieren in der vorliegenden Studie die Ergebnisse ihrer Forschung, in deren
Rahmen bis zu elf Bauphasen der Kirche belegt worden sind.

In the Church of the Archangel Michael in Markušovce an exceptional collection of sepulchral monuments has been preserved. They are remarkable not just because there are so many of them, at a number never before seen elsewhere in village churches in the Spiš region, but also for the information that they offer us as researchers. The church dates from the second half of the 13th century and since its origin served not just as the parish church but also as the estate church of the Markušovský branch of the Mariáši family (Máriássy, Markušovskí), which derived its predicate from the village that
was in its possession for centuries. This family was one of the oldest and most prominent noble families in the Spiš region. The inscriptions on the sepulchral monuments were copied in the late 18th century by the Spiš historian Carolus Wagner and later by other researchers. Despite this, more in-depth research was never carried out and the study at hand is the first ever analysis and contextual evaluation. Epigraphic study helped to fill in some dynastic prosopographic information and identify who commissioned the sepulchral monuments and how they came into existence. The oldest surviving sepulchral monument was created before 1516, when Štefan VI Mariáši, who both commissioned and ultimately occupied it, died. Besides this, there are also seven surviving inscribed heraldic
tombs or epitaphs(?) and one tombstone with just the inscribed segment, part of which is still in its original location. The sepulchral monuments of Žigmund I, Pavel II, and František V Mariáši all suggest they were the work of a local,
domestic workshop. On top of this collection of surviving sepulchral monuments is knowledge of several no longer existing monuments that were used in burial rites and the related but today little known heraldic slabs that belonged to Lucie Čaholi, the wife of Štefan VI Mariáši, and the latter’s patrons Ján and Juraj Zápoľský and their mother Hedviga, a Tešín princess and the widow of the Palatine Štefan Zápoľski. A larger and more significant collection of sepulchral monuments in Spiš can be found in the town parish Church of St Jakub in Levoča and St Martin’s Cathedral in Spišská Kapitula, but these are different types of church artefacts used also for different functions as the Markušovský church.

Various panel paintings created in the 15th century seem to deny the existence
of a rigid border between the Kingdom of Poland and Hungary.
In the 20th century scholars from Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary described
these paintings as sharing important formal characteristics. On the basis of different research hypotheses, these works were attributed to various circles and artistic schools. At different times Cracow, Spiš and the Nowy Sącz Region in Lesser Poland were perceived as playing the key role in the milieu.
Artists were studied as important examples of painters receiving commissions
from patrons on both sides of the border. Unsurprisingly, scholars considered
works created in their native countries as being the most representative and
emphasised the superior quality of local creations in comparison with works
created for the market beyond the border.
In the paper, I will summarise the state of research, and try to outline new
perspectives for the art historical analysis of several issues concerning the
Gothic panel painting on the former Polish-Hungarian borderland.

On the territory of northern Spiš, an exceptional collection of stone sepulchralia has been maintained, which in its character
is related to the Polish ethnicity, intensively penetrating and acting on Spiš especially after 1412, when part of Spiš came into Polish pledge. Of the locally preserved sepulchralia, a group of epitaphs was naturally connected to that from the end of the 16th and first half of the 17th century, which was dedicated to deceased burghers or priests, coming from Poland or Silesia, during which time we all of these specified products only in the border areas, most affected by Polish reign. These works were preserved specifically in two established cities, Stará Ľubovňa and Podolínec and in the village Nižné Ružbachy. All of the presented sepulchralia
contain a scene with a kneeling and praying deceased – alone or in the company of their family – under the Crucifixion. An inscription is located in the lower part. The language accompanying the inscriptions corresponds to the complicated,
multi-ethnic composition of the populace in northern Spiš. Although precisely the depiction of the deceased before the crucifix was one of the most common scenes, taken in the Renaissance still from medieval sepulchralia, in Spiš (but also in the surrounding regions) this scene was not a central among our discussed group of northern Spiš sepulchralia in stone. Also the collection of sepulchralia from Stará Ľubovňa is valuable. The municipal archive was affected by several disasters and many written sources have been lost forever. The examined sepulchralia are hence another source, the analysis of which allows us to approach the forgotten populace of the town and region. Sepulchralia from the 1st half of the 17th century is moreover related to the Recatholization initiative, begun after the accession of Sebastián Lubomírski to the post of Spiš mayor. From that time, the territory of northern Spiš,
specifically the newly created deaconate of Lubovnianska, was administered in the first place by the Polish Catholic clergy, until then by the bishopric of Krakow.

The painter Jan (Johann, János) Rombauer lived and worked in Levoča, St. Petersburg and Prešov. This cosmopolitan born  to a craftsman´s family came to attention of the Spiš region quite early. Because of a good contacts in the spa Bardejov he got a link to the Russian nobility and lived for many years in St. Petersburg. After a succesful career there he moved back to Upper Hungary and settled down in Prešov.
The book is a product of interdisciplinary cooperation between Slovak and Hungarian specialists and is intended to present the life and work of Rombauer in depth. Coauthors: Géza Galavics, Edit Szentesi, Szilveszter Terdik (HU), Alena Kredatusová, Peter Kónya (SK). The author of the project, book concept and main chapter as well as a curator of the exhibition in 2010 at the Slovak National Gallery: Katarína Beňová.

Kniha o Spišskom hrade vznikla zhodou viacerých okolností. Dôležitým momentom boli výsledky architektonicko-historického výskumu v rokoch 2007 – 2008, ktorý mal pôvodne rezumovať predchádzajúce poznatky, lebo „všetko podstatné už o hrade povedané bolo“. Ukázalo sa, že medziodborová spolupráca viacerých odborníkov dokázala priniesť viac než zaujímavé výsledky a k tým najdôležitejším patrila nová interpretácia stavebného vývoja hradného komplexu.
Edičný zámer pôvodne rátal s textom, ktorý mal mať charakter turistického sprievodcu, avšak rozsah nových poznatkov a sústredený materiál nedal autorom, aby sa nepokúsili o hlbšiu interpretáciu tohto monumentu.

ponúka plastický obraz vývoja hradu od vzniku najstarších častí architektúry a prvých písomných zmienok až po jeho skazu v roku 1780. Napomáhajú tomu aj písomné materiály začlenené v samostatnej prílohe. Okrem prekladov vybraných zaujímavých listín, tu čitateľ nájde mapu s vyznačením Spišského hradného panstva a tabuľkový prehľad poplatkov, vytvorené podľa Urbára hradného domínia z roku 1583. K novinkám, ktoré táto kniha ponúka, patrí samostatný prehľad županov, vládcov
a súkromných vlastníkov hradu a zoznam a krátky priebeh bitiek, ktoré sa odohrali na Spišskom hrade. Hneď v prvej časti prináša rozsiahlejší pohľad na jeho pamiatkovú starostlivosť a doterajšiu obnovu. Neopomenul sa však ani text o muzeálnych expozíciách a súčasnom využití hradu ako expozície múzea. Dobroslava Menclová v roku 1954 napísala, že „umeleckohistorický rozbor Spišského hradu patrí medzi najobťažnejšie problémy tohto druhu. Príčinou je nielen obrovský rozsah hradu, ale aj dlhá doba jeho života“. Na týchto slovách sa ani po takmer 60 rokoch nič nezmenilo, naopak, pribudol ďalší kus histórie, pretože hrad píše svoje dejiny naďalej.
Ďalším, nemenej dôležitým impulzom pre vznik knihy bola finančná podpora Poštovej banky, a. s., generálneho partnera SNM, projektu tejto publikácie a podpora kolegiálnych inštitúcií doma i v zahraničí. Naša interpretácia dejinného vývoja hradu by nemohla vzniknúť bez bádaní mnohých predchodcov, preto im patrí uznanie a vďaka. Veríme, že publikácia si nájde svojich čitateľov tak, ako všetky doteraz vydané odborné knihy či legendy o najväčšom hradnom komplexe našej krajiny, ktorý je jedným z jej veľkých symbolov.

Taking the historical context into the consideration the territory of the Spiš See was limited to the north by the borders of the Kingdom of Poland and to the south by the Hnilec valley. On the west its territory was bordered by the High and Low Tatras and by the Branisko uplands to the east. At the end of the 12th century the territory was administered by the provosts acting at Spišská Kapitula who were subordinated to the Esztergom bishops from the jurisdictional point of view. In 1776 the Spiš territory merged with the Liptov and Orava Sees in order to be united under the jurisdiction of the newly formed Spiš bishopric which in fact has originated at the time. Nevertheless, the Catholic faith in the 17th century experienced almost no support at all. On the beginning of the Reformation process until the first half of the 16th century all monasteries and convents had been ruined. Majority of the priests including their parishes apostatized from the Catholic faith to follow Protestants. With the exception of a few settlements almost all of them used to be led by the Lutherans. Nevertheless, the Recatolization process started in the early 17th century thanks to the immense assistance of the monastic orders such as the Jesuits and Piarists, as well as the highly dedicated Spiš provosts. One of the most significant Recatolization tools included conduct of the canonical visitations.
These referred to the visits performed by the church authorities such as the bishop or archbishop within the territory of their jurisdiction - including chapters, parishes and monasteries. On performing the visitations not only the conditions of the particular parishes had been examined, but also the sacred and non-sacred buildings, including the articles of their inventories, as well as the human resources, such as the priests, teachers and other competent persons, their revenues and salaries, etc. On the other hand, the authorities were interested in laypersons and other residents in the parishes, their moral and denominational affiliation, etc. The eldest mentions on the canonical visitations refer to the 13th century, however, the oldest preserved records of visitations date back to the 17th century. Whether successful or not, several examinations had been conducted during the mentioned period by the Spiš provosts or archbishops from Esztergom. Nevertheless, the eldest visitations was concerned with Spišská Kapitula only. The visitation in 1732 was restrained by the protest of the Protestant residents who at the time were at majority. The consequent visitation was performed by the contemporary provost Ján Pálfalvay during the period between 1655 and 1656. The one refers to the eldest preserved visitation of the parishes within the Spiš territory in which a church or a chapter was dedicated to the Catholic Church. In 1655 this reffered to the 30 settlements in: Kežmarok, Spišský Štvrtok, Spišský Hrušov and its affiliated branch in Vítkovce, Domaňovce, Ordzoviany, Bijacovce, Pongrácovce, Žehra and its affiliated branch in Dúbrava, Harakovce, Korytné, Poľanovce, Letanovce and its affiliated branch in Jánovce, Spišské Tomášovce and its affiliated branch in Arnutovce, Lendak, Kacvín, Nižné Lapše, Vyšné Lapše, Tribš, Krempachy, Belá, Fridman and its affiliated branch in Nedeca, Spišská Stará Ves, Matiašovce, Lechnica and Veľká Lesná. In the following year Spišské Hanušovce were added to the list. In the conclusion, two older texts have been included: The Instructions for the Visitation of the Spiš Provost Matej Tarnóczy dating back to the beginning of the 17th century and the so-called Puncta on the visitations collected by the cardinal Báthory which date back to the 16th century.

Digitalisat der 11-teiligen Mitteilung, enthaltend 679 Selbstbiografien der Pfarrerkandidaten aus den Ländern der ehemaligen österreich-ungarischen Monarchie (1573-1601), vorwiegend Böhmen, Mähren, Österreich, Ungarn, Schlesien, Siebenbürgen.

Die Zips gehört zu den bemerkenswerten Regionen in Mitteleuropa. In ihr wird bis heute eine dichte Konzentration und ein hohes Niveau der historischen Denkmäler aufbewahrt, und zwar nicht nur in den Städten, sondern auch in den Städtchen und in den Dörfern. Das Gebiet der Zips wurde im 13. Jahrhundert von den Deutschen kolonisiert, denen vom König  aufgrund des in ihrem Lande gültigen  Rechts umfangreiche Privilegien erteilt wurden. Im Jahre 1412 verpfändete König Sigmund  Luxemburg für die Anleihe 37 000 tschechischer Groschen dem polnischen König 16 Zipser Städte, Burgen und Burgengemeinden Ľubovňa und Podolínec.
Während der Verbreitung der Reformation waren die Gedanken des Protestantismus von der Zipser Bevölkerung früh aufgenommen. Der Bürgermeister des verpfändeten Gebietes, Pole Stanislav Lubomirski (1583 – 1649), war bemüht, dieses Gebiet zu rekatholisieren. Als Zögling der Jesuiten war er bestrebt, zuerst die Schule und das Kloster dieses Ordens zu gründen, da es aber aus mehreren Gründen nicht gelungen ist, verlangte er die Niederlassung der Klosterbrüder aus dem Orden der Piaristen (Orden der frommen Schulen) gegründet vom Spanier José de Calasanz, der in Rom die erste kostenlose Schule für die armen Jungen eröffnete. Die Entstehung des Ordens wurde im echten Sinne des Wortes im Jahre 1621 realisiert. Nach mehreren Jahren des Bemühens um die Gründung des Klosters in der Zips kamen die ersten Ordensbrüder nach Podolínec am  20. November 1642 und sie übernahmen die Gründungsurkunde gleich am zweiten Tag.
Die Piaristen waren im Einklang mit ihrer Sendung bemüht, möglichst bald die fromme Schule (Schola Pia) zu eröffnen, was auch die Absicht des Gründers Stanislav Lubomirski war, für den  der Aufbau einer guten Schule von hoher Qualität wichtig war. Er versprach ein großartiges Kollegium aufzubauen, dessen Bau im Frühjahr 1643 begonnen wurde und er wuchs sehr intensiv.
Die feierliche Eröffnung der Schule fand am 18. Juni 1643 statt. Die piaristischen Schulen wurden als neunklassige Schulen organisiert, sie hatten drei elementare, dann drei grammatische Klassen und es folgten drei Humanitäts-und theologische Klassen. In  Podolínec wurden im ersten Jahr zwei Klassen eröffnet: Schola legendi und Schola gramatica. Sie befanden sich in den Räumen der Burg. Allmählich wurden weitere Klassen eröffnet,  mindestens seit dem Jahre 1645 Klasse Aritmetica (Klasse der Rechner), deren Lehrer in den Jahren 1645 – 1650 Kazimír Bogotka, der erste Pole bei den Piaristen, war. Im Jahre  1646 begann der Unterricht  in der folgenden Klasse, in der vierten Klasse des Gymnasiums, genannt Syntax (Syntaxista). Schon seit dem Jahre 1648 fungierte die höhere Stufe der Bildung – das philosophische Studium. Die Philosophie trug Matthias Casimiro Pietraszkowić, Doktor an der  Krakauer Akademie, vor. In einem Monat nach der Eröffnung des philosophischen Studiums wurden die Schule und das Kloster in die neuen Räume umgezogen.  Die Einweihung fand am 28. Juni 1648 statt.
Das Kollegium gehörte in die Polnische Provinz (bis zum Jahre 1782). Die Schule war eine Lateinschule (Vorgänger der Gymnasien), sie hatte die Klassen: Parva, Principia, Gramatica, Syntax, Poetae, Rhetores. Die Piaristen führten auch die Klasse Aritmetica, manchmal genannt Germani & Arithmetica, und die philosophische Klasse ein.
Ein interessantes Ereignis war ein ungewöhnlicher Besuch des Leiters letzten Aufstandes gegen die Habsburger Franz II. Rákoczi. Am 11. November 1701 suchte er während der Flucht nach Polen das Obdach im Kollegium. Es kam dazu, als er am 6. November mit seinem treuen  Gefährten Adam Berzevici (Brezovický) aus dem Gefängnis in Wien floh.  Berzevici, obwohl er Evangeliker A. B. war, studierte an der piaristischen frommen Schule, da seine Eltern die Güter in der Gegend besaßen.
Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde die Schule zu einer großen  Bildungsinstanz von hoher Qualität, was eine hohe Vertretung der adligen Jungen bezeugt. In den  50-er  Jahren des 18. Jahrhunderts stellten sie  ungefähr  30% dar. Einen der Entwicklungsgipfel vom Standpunkt der Studenten aus bilden die 70-er Jahre des 18. Jahrhunderts, als sie jährlich von fast 400 Jungen besucht wurde. Die Schule besuchten die Studenten aus der breiten Umgebung und besonders aus den Gebieten Ziemie Sadecka und Krakau, wo es in der Gegend keine anderen Lateinschulen gab, außer der Schule in Podolínec.
Nachdem die polnische Verwaltung über dem verpfändeten Gebiet (de facto 1772, formal 1775) aufgehoben worden war, blieb  die Schule bis zum Jahre  1782 in der polnischen Verwaltung, weil das Kollegium auch weiter unter der Polnischen Provinz war. Nach der Versetzung des Gymnasiums nach Ungarn wurden das philosophische Studium (1784) und das Noviziat (1783) aufgehoben. Die Organisation des Gymnasiums wurde laut der ungarischen Legislative in das königliche höhere Gymnasium umgewandelt. Diese Umstände verminderten aber die hohe aus Polen und Galizien stammende Studentenanzahl; in den  90-er Jahren des 18. Jahrhunderts bildeten sie mehr als 70 % aller Studenten. Den Gipfel der Studentenanzahl erreichte das Gymnasium am Ende des 18. und am Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts, als hier jährlich ungefähr  400 Studenten studierten, im Jahre 1797/98 – 415, 1803/04 – 402 Studenten.
Das Gymnasium musste sich den Entscheidungen des königlichen Hofs unterordnen.  Im Jahre 1782 wurde der Lehrstuhl für ungarische Sprache errichtet und das Ungarische wurde als Unterrichtsfach gelehrt; die Studenten zeigten aber kein Interesse dafür. Im Studienjahr  1844/45 wurde das Ungarische als Unterrichtssprache eingeführt. Es verursachte ein Gruppenverlassen der Schule seitens polnischer Studenten, für die das Gymnasium dadurch die Attraktivität verlor, da sie meistens aus Galizien stammten, wobei dieses Gebiet nicht zu Ungarn, sondern in den österreichischen Teil der Monarchie gehörte. Zu den weiteren Gründen gehörten die Erhöhung der Anzahl von Mittelschulen in Galizien und in Polen, der Bauernaufstand in Galizien und Aufstand der Polen für die Nationalbefreiung. Obwohl die Studentenanzahl aus Ungarn wuchs, es war trotzdem nicht genügend, um den vorangegangenen Zustand zu erreichen. In dieser ungünstigen Zeit hatte die Revolution in den Jahren 1848/49 für das Gymnasium die Liquidierungsfolgen und das Gymnasium existierte zeitweilig nicht mehr. Ein Grund dafür waren einerseits die finanziellen Schwierigkeiten aufgrund des Aufhebens von Kirchengebühren, erhöhte Ansprüche auf die Anzahl der Lehrer betreffs des eingeführten fachlichen Unterrichts, als die einzelnen Fächer von den zuständigen Fachlehrern unterrichtet wurden, vor allem war das aber die Teilnahme der ungarischen Piaristen an der Revolution.

Kniha mapuje oltáre 19. storočia v historicky a kultúrne bohatom regióne Spiša z pohľadu dejín umenia. Približuje ich vývoj, špecifické vplyvy (a importy) z bližšieho i vzdialenejšieho prostredia, držanie sa tradícii a implementácie nových módnych prvkov. Hoci aj pre odborníkov predstavuje toto obdobie (medzi)dobu úpadku po veľkých slohoch (romanika, gotika, renesancia, barok) a pred nástupom moderny, jej pamiatky odzrkadľujú jedinečné podnety a hmotné reminiscencie na konkrétne osobnosti a udalosti.

Špecifikom práce je záujem o oltáre všetkých konfesií na danom území (rímskokatolíckej, gréckokatolíckej, evanjelickej augsburského vyznania a židovskej). Oltáre predstavujú pomerne zložité kompozitné zoskupenia prepájajúce viaceré umelecké druhy (architektúru, umelecké remeslo, rezbárstvo, sochárstvo, maliarstvo) a stopovanie ich realizácie je nesporne zaujímavé. Kniha obsahuje 211 maloformátových vyobrazení súčasného alebo minulého stavu a objavných komparácií. Množstvo informácií na pomerne malom priestore je znakom hlbšieho ponoru autorky, ktorá sa umeniu 19. storočia venuje celoživotne.

Súčasťou dejín Spiša je aj osobnosť kňaza Jána Vencka (1869–1957). Zaslúžil sa o záchranu archívu kaštieľa v Spišskom Štiavniku, je autorom niekoľkých publikácií a najmä zakladateľom archeologickej zbierky. Ako amatérsky archeológ a historik sa v prvej polovici 20. storočia intenzívne venoval histórii, etnografii a archeológii prevažne v oblasti Spiša. Štúdia je venovaná jeho archeologickej zbierke a jej osudu, a taktiež osobnosti Jána Vencka. Vďaka nemu sa nám až do súčasnosti zachoval dôležitý súbor pamiatok a písomných prameňov.

The article deals with the medieval and Early Modern chronicles of Levoča. This German town and its surrounding area represent for Hungary, a country characterized by a lack of such sources, the true center of urban memory culture. The author first introduces various historiographical texts, especially the chronicle of Caspar Hain from the 1680s and its models. This is followed by an attempt to explain why precisely Levoča differs from other similar settlements in Hungary on the level of memory. In the author’s opinion, there are many reasons for this situation: the peripheral geographic position of Spiš Germans, their unique legal tradition, medieval and Early Modern crises, close contact between the town and those in the Holy Roman Empire and the special identity of Spiš, which was also strengthened by the peculiar myth of the origin of the local population and tales of the founding of Levoča.

Štúdia je úvodným náčrtom problematiky dejín osídlenia dolného Spiša. Ide o postupný náčrt osídlenia Hnileckej doliny od pravekých dejín až do začiatku 15. storočia. Ďalším aspektom štúdie je rozbor majetkových domén, na ktorých jednotlivé mestá a obce vznikli.

The renaissance belfries in the Spiš region, which were built separately from their churches in Vrbov, Strážky, Kežmarok, Podolínec, Spišská Sobota, Levoča, Spišská Belá and Poprad have preserved their medieval cores. The belfries in Poprad and Podolínec are often linked together, as they have a similar shape at the attic's ridge. They were both built at the end of the 1650s - the Poprad's belfry in 1658 and the one in Podolinec 1659. Today's late-renaissance belfry in poprad had an older predecessor which was rebuilt by the town's reeve Lucas Topperczer in 1592. An italian mason who settled in Kežmarok, Ulrich Maurer, designed the constructional amendments and a Slovak carpenter Bernhardt Miller from Podolínec worked on them. A secondary preserved inscription reveals that the belfry's construction works took place in the summer months of 1663. To be precise, the walls of the belfry were not decorated by one, but two identical inscriptions with chronostichon (a sentence, in which specific letters can be interpreted as Roman numerals), which also dated the belfry's late-ranaissance sgraffito decoration. The inscriptions confirm that the belfry was built from the foundations: posuit fundamina. The reconstruction of the no longer existing late-renaissance decoration with the sgraffito, as well as the analysis of the used motifs is complicated by sparse photo-documentation and only general mentions in literature. The photographs taken before the decoration's destruction in 1958 show that the sgraffito inscriptions of the figures depicted in shrines used to be all around the walls. The attic and arcade of the belfry were originally decorated by stylised, floral ornaments. The belfry corners were also decorated, originally by an illusive bossage, as was the wall at the sound outlets. According to the authors, who saw the sgraffito decoration before destruction, the semi-circular shrines contained figures of prophets and aposteles, evangelists and saints as well as allegoric figures of science and liberal arts (septem artes liberales). The allegories of liberal arts in the Poprad's belfry originated from the collection of copperplate reproductions of the same name, which were created by German graphic artist Georg Pencz. They were first printed about 1541. In the case of the Poprad's belfry, this is the last known sgraffito decoration of the renaissance spirit in the Spiš region, where one would likely assume the use of younger, maybe manneristic or even early-baroque graphic inspirations.
