Theology of Vocation

La pregunta por el modo de orientar la vida se revela como una de las más serias y apremiantes. Tanto en su acepción sacra, que remite a una llamada trascendente, como en su concepción laica, que vincula el sentimiento de felicidad con la propia realización personal, la palabra vocación quiere indicar el modo adecuado que sigue el sujeto para desempeñarse con éxito en la vida.

Quizá por ello, cuando se habla de vocación resuenan aquellos elementos que componen la identidad del ser humano: corporeidad y espiritualidad, intimidad y relacionalidad, inteligencia y sensibilidad, conciencia y libertad, biografía personal e historia colectiva.

El desencanto causado por la «liquidez» axioló­gica, la demagogia política, el pragmatis­mo económico, la incertidumbre eco­lógica, el narcisismo digital y la uniformidad cultural en los que parece haberse instalado la antropología del trashombre, urge a elaborar un nuevo modelo de orientación vocacional que enseñe a vivir desde la «autotrascendencia» y la «ultimidad personal», o sea, desde la alteridad, la relación, la libertad y el don. Puesto que, sin vocación, el ser personal se condena a tratarse y ser tratado con indiferencia.

La querelle théologique sur la vocation sacerdotale entre Louis Branchereau et Joseph Lahitton, au début du XXe siècle, est plutôt bien connue des historiens et des théologiens. Néanmoins, une juste contextualisation, pourtant indispensable à la compréhension des deux positions et de leur incompatibilité, fait presque toujours défaut. Cet article replace chacun des deux auteurs, avec leurs perspectives respectives, dans le contexte tumultueux de la crise moderniste. [Doctoral thesis] The thesis deals with the question of how the phenomenon vocation is to be understood theologically, with a special focus on Karl Rahners theology. In the first part of the thesis, the subject “Vocation” is presented through four vocational testimonies Mary Ward, Clotario Blest, Ute Bock and the couple of Lorena Cornejo and Benito Baranda and then further discussed by reference to some specific issues concerning the subject. In the second part, the Scriptures, the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola, and four theological approaches of the 20th century Hans Urs von Balthasar, Edward Hahnenberg, the final document of Aparecida 2007 and Christoph Theobald are examined about the topic. In the third part, the subject “Vocation” is explored in various areas of Karl Rahners theology: in his anthropology and doctrine of grace, his theology of freedom and eschatology, his christology, ecclesiology, and his logic of existential knowledge. The final part of the thesis presents a few systematic perspectives on vocation, and some solutions of the questions posed at the beginning.

Die Arbeit behandelt die Frage, wie das Phänomen Berufung, unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Theologie Karl Rahners, theologisch-systematisch zu verstehen ist. Im 1. Teil der Arbeit wird das Thema „Berufung“ anhand von vier Berufungszeugnissen Mary Ward, Clotario Blest, Ute Bock sowie des Ehepaars Lorena Cornejo und Benito Baranda erörtert und durch konkrete Fragestellungen, die das Berufungsverständnis betreffen, entfaltet. Im 2. Teil wird das Thema in der Heiligen Schrift, den Geistlichen Übungen des Ignatius von Loyola und in vier theologischen Ansätzen des 20. Jahrhunderts Hans Urs von Balthasar, Edward Hahnenberg, das Schlussdokument von Aparecida 2007 und Christoph Theobald untersucht. Im 3. Teil wird nach dem Berufungsverständnis in verschiedenen Bereichen der Theologie Karl Rahners der Anthropologie und Gnadenlehre, der Theologie der Freiheit und Eschatologie, der Christologie, der Ekklesiologie und der Logik der existentiellen Erkenntnis gefragt. Im 4. Teil der Arbeit werden einige systematische Perspektiven und Lösungsansätze der am Anfang gestellten Fragen erörtert.

This article attempts to theologically understand the phenomenon of vocation from the thought of Karl Rahner. The German theologian approaches the vocation as an individual's knowledge that a distinct way of life follows the divine will for him. The itinerary through various areas of his theology supports and deepens this understanding. The human being is a gracious hearer of the Word, which is spoken to him personally in the deepest part of himself and in Jesus Christ. To that Word, the human being responds freely through his acts, which define his identity in a definitive way and in the face of God. Thus, Christians carry out their vocation in a particular following of Jesus specific to each person. Although vocations are always oriented to the Church’s community, this does not rule out possible conflicts between charism and institution.

Louis Tronson (1622-1700), élu en 1676 troisième supérieur de la Compagnie des prêtres de Saint-Sulpice, est connu principalement, dans l’histoire de la spiritualité, comme éditeur du Traité des saints ordres attribué à Jean-Jacques Olier (1676), auteur des Examens particuliers (1690), et hôte des entretiens d’Issy sur le quiétisme (1694-1695). La place de cet homme dans l’histoire de la théologie catholique mérite toutefois d'être mieux mise en perspective. Tronson joue en effet un rôle déterminant dans l’explicitation théologique de la vocation sacerdotale. Réfléchissant, à la lumière de son expérience de formateur de futurs prêtres, sur les « marques de vocation », il élabore de véritables grilles de discernement, au demeurant assez souples. Parmi ces critères, une place particulière revient à l’« inclination » ou « attrait ». Résonance subjective et intime de l’appel divin, l’attrait n’est cependant pas subjectiviste : il suppose au contraire un objet qui attire, c’est-à-dire le sacerdoce, envisagé comme « état » et « fonctions », deux mots très utilisés par Tronson qui, bien loin de s’opposer, se complètent. Ainsi cet auteur peut-il proposer une vision du sacerdoce qui soit à la fois sacramentelle et sociale, spécifiquement christologique et enracinée dans la société de son temps.

As the Episcopal Synod on »Young People, Faith, and Vocational Discernment« shapes up to meet in the fall of 2018 it is important to recall vocation as a central category in dogmatics. Here two important post-Vatican authors and one ecclesial document are compared and contrasted in their approach to the topic of vocation. H. U. von Balthasar, Edward Hahnenberg, and the final document of the Latin American bishops conference meeting in Aparecida are questioned as to the suggestions they provide for the upcoming Synod in Rome.

Critically surveying various approaches to Christian ecological ethics alongside the vexing moral ambiguities of the Anthropocene, Ecology of Vocation offers an integrative approach to responsible living vis à vis one of Protestantism's key theological resources-- the doctrine of vocation. Drawing on H. Richard Niebuhr's germinal ethical framework with a decidedly ecofeminist perspective, Kiara A. Jorgenson demonstrates how vocation's emphasis on right relationship practically speaks to the embodied realities of planetary interrelatedness. By excavating the ecological promise of the early Reformers' democratized renderings of calling and linking their concerns to the contemporary context, she argues that vocation cannot be reduced to the particular aim of monetized work, nor to an elitist escape from it. Rather, vocation must be recast as the dynamic and vibrant space among the myriad roles any of us inhabits at any given time in a particular place. When understood in this light, vocation signals much more than a job, a passion, or a quest for self-discovery. An alternative understanding of vocation's very ecology can extend Christian conceptions of the neighbor beyond the human and lead the church to more faithfully pursue lives characterized by humility, restraint, wisdom, justice, and love.
