Turkish Bath

Wellbeing as a notion gains importance day by day hand in hand with the status of healthiness. World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” on the one hand; on the other hand, Global Wellness Institution (GWI, 2017) stresses wellness as intellectual, religious and medical movements and modern concept with ancient roots beginning with the Ayurveda treatments followed by Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ancient Greek doctrines, Roman Medicine and movements in United States and Europe in 19th century.
Today, wellbeing and being healthy are the ultimate goals that are difficult to endure due to increasing stress level in modern world, working environment with high- intensity and expectations from civilized human. As a result of these, people need to have treatments and experiences to relax and stay strong. In this content, spa spaces compel attention. As the word spa literally refers to the abbreviation of sanus (salus/ sanitas) per aquam that means health coming from water in Latin. The relation between human beings and water starts in the mother womb and continues in many forms. People are always attracted to water and this interest originates from different aspects like need for bathing, religious and spiritual rituals and the belief to curative powers of water. Bathing can take place where water exist as bathtub, shower or even river, sea, ocean, lake. While human baths throughout the history, the forms of bathing shaped according to different reigns, beliefs and politics. Thus, personal and public bathing spaces emerged in relation to these routines and rhetoric. In this thesis study, well-being and its spatial experience and spa design development and contemporary spa spaces, further to that, the emerging role of Turkish Hamam spatiality and its atmospherically penetration in contemporary spa design is also examined and discussed.
Thesis consist of five main chapters:
In first chapter; the purpose of thesis, literature review and hypothesis are stressed. To comprehend the definition of spa, the construction of spa spaces and the history behind these spaces and experiences literature study is done. In addition to that, a future projection is stressed throughout the evolution of spa in the context of hypothesis.
In second chapter; the roots of bathing need, spa culture and their spatial typologies and the emergence of them are examined. In order to fully understand, spa rituals throughout the history beginning with Indus Valley, following to that Ancient Greek, Romans, Asia and Ottoman Empire Eras are discussed; further to that, the essential thresholds are examined in a timeline.
In third chapter; planning a spa is analyzed deeply. In this content; spa types, determination of spa concept, spa design principals and obligations, spa components and spatial requirements, layout needs and user flows are revealed.xxi
In fourth chapter; under the indications and inputs of previous chapters, the spatial aspects and criteria that affect spa experience are specified. In this content, since in modern world, the boundaries between spa types are getting ambiguous and the spas are evolved into “days spas” where users can reach any time they want and “destination spas” where users need to plan a journey to use in practical use; one destination spa in Turkey (Canyon Ranch Kaplankaya) and one resort hotel spa outside of Turkey (Joali Maldives), one city hotel spa outside of Turkey (Villa Magna Madrid) and one city hotel in Turkey (Fairmont Quasar Istanbul) are dismantled in relation to defined criteria set. In considerations of these evaluations, the increasing demand to Turkish Hamam is observed and stressed.
In fifth chapter, concluding remarks and future projections are discussed. In this part; in addition to the evaluations and sectional results, it is stressed that the significance of Turkish hamam is getting more and more important gradually with its flexible and convertible spatial aspects and utilization of spatial characteristics of Turkish Hamam emerges as an increasing demand in the design of contemporary spa ambient, while this find out is stressed and the reasons are briefly discussed on the final chapter.

Öz: Mimari yapılarda işleve, döneme veya bölgeye göre farklı biçim ve özelliklerde üretilen doğal aydınlatma sistemleri, görsel ve psikolojik konfor durumunun iyileşmesinde önemli rol oynamaktadır. Türk medeniyetinde temizlik, sosyalleşme ve gelir sağlama gibi birçok eylemle ön plana çıkan hamamlarda kullanılan aydınlatma elemanları, mekânsal niteliğin ve konfor koşullarının ayrılmaz bir ögesidir. Hamamların, mahremiyet gereksiniminin yüksek olduğu yapılardan biri olması nedeniyle mekânlarda doğal aydınlatma elemanlarının kullanımı, tasarımın önemli bir parametresi olarak değerlendirilmiş, bu amaçla farklı çözüm önerileri geliştirilmiştir. Mekâna günışığı alımında kullanılan ışık/aydınlık fenerleri, aydınlık pencereleri, ışık gözü-fil gözü, ışık tavanları gibi yapısal çözümler ile atmosfer zenginleştirilmiş, mekân algısında bu aydınlatma elemanlarının önemli bir katkısı olmuştur. Bu çalışma kapsamında Kayseri kent merkezinde yer alan 7 adet tarihi hamamın doğal aydınlatma elemanları belgelenerek, mekânlardaki kullanım yoğunluğu, çeşitleri ve boyutları tipolojik bir çalışma ile değerlendirilmiştir. Böylece bu yapıların doğal aydınlatma çözümleri açısından özgün niteliklerini vurgulayarak mekânsal kalite potansiyellerinin koruma ve yeniden işlevlendirme bağlamında genişletilip geliştirilebilmesine imkân tanınması hedeflenmektedir Abstract: Natural lighting systems produced in different forms and features according to function, period or region in architectural buildings play an important role in the improvement of both visual comfort conditions and psychological comfort. In Turkish baths, lighting systems are an integral element of spatial quality and comfort conditions. Since the baths are one of the buildings with the highest need for privacy, the use of natural lighting elements in spaces has been evaluated as an important parameter of the design, and different solutions have been developed for this purpose. Accordingly, structural solutions such as lighting lantern, windows, oculies, light ceilings were produced in daylight intake to the space. These lighting elements made an important contribution to the perception of space. Within the scope of this study, the natural lighting elements of 7 historical baths located Kayseri were documented and evaluated with a typological study. Özet Cami, çarşı ve hamam Türk İslam şehirlerinin en önemli unsurlarıdır. Türk İslam şehirlerinde şehrin en merkezi yerinde bu üç unsurun bir arada olması beklenir. Bunlardan tarihi hamamlar, Türk İslam mimarisinin ve sosyal hayatının simgeleri olarak günümüze kadar işlevsel özelliklerini koruyarak gelmişlerdir. Bir kısmı Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü'nün ukdesinde bulunan tarihi hamamların, özel mülk olarak işletilenleri ya da Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü ile hisseli olanları da bulunmaktadır. Türklerin hâkimiyetinde kalmış bütün şehirlerde örneklerini gördüğümüz hamamlar özellikle İstanbul, Bursa, Edirne, Isparta, Konya, Erzurum, Diyarbakır ve daha birçok şehrimizde çok sayıda bulunmaktadır. Ancak günümüze ulaşmış olan hamamların büyük çoğunluğu imparatorluk başkenti İstanbul'da ve şehrin eski dokusunun izlerinin en yoğun olduğu Fatih, Üsküdar, Beyoğlu, Eyüp ilçelerinde yer almaktadır. Her ne kadar çoğu yıkılmış ve işlevini kaybetmiş olsa da hala işlevini sürdüren, iyi korunmuş ve turizm açısından da önem taşıyan hamamlar vardır. Bu tarihi yapılara sahip çıkmak Türk İslam kültür mirasına sahip çıkmak demektir. Kültür coğrafyası açısından önemli bir simge, maddi kültürün çok önemli temsilcisi olan bu eserler, hem Türklerde şehir hayatının kendine özgü bir medeniyeti temsil ettiğine şahitlik yaparlar hem de günümüz şartlarında turizm açısından önemli bir ekonomik potansiyel oluştururlar. Yani mevcut yapılara ve işlevlerine dikkat çekmenin, kültürel anlamda olduğu gibi ekonomik anlamda da faydaları vardır ki bunların başında turizm için önemli bir çekicilik oluşturması gelir. Günümüzde gittikçe artan kültür turizmi, şehirlere ve şehirlerin geçmişe ait izlerine olan ilgiyi de arttırmıştır. Bu anlamda İstanbul'un tarihi hamamlarının günümüzdeki durumu, işlevsel özellikleri ve şehir içinde dağılışı irdelenmiştir. Ayrıca turizm açısından bir aktivite oluşturan ve ilgi çeken bu tarihi yapıların nasıl değerlendirildiği İstanbul için araştırılmıştır. Abstract The mosques, bathhouses and bazaars are the most important constructions of Turk-Islam cities. These tree constructions are supposed to be located in Turk-Islam city centers. Until now as a symbol of social life and Turk-Islam architecture, historical baths have protected their functional characteristics. Whereas General Directorate for Foundations of Turkish Republic governs them, the directorate and individuals or the directorate operates the most of them fully. These baths which are found in every cities where they governed by Turkish States are notably located in the most of cities such as İstanbul, Bursa, Edirne, Isparta, Konya, etc. Protecting these constructions are crucial for handing Turk-Islam Culture Heritage down. These heritages, an important symbol for culture geography and material culture, symbolize both unique Turkish city life and financial potential in tourism attractions. Taking attractions to these constructions and their functions has cultural meanings besides financial meanings. It also creates an important attractions in tourism activities. These constructions create an increasing potential to different tourism activities including city, culture and nostalgia tourism. This study has a focus on and attention to historical baths which are mostly devastated. Especially in this sense, Historical Turkish Baths, which create a different activity in terms of tourism and touristic attraction, will be investigated for Istanbul.
