This paper examines the changing dynamics of United States' relations with states in the Caribbean region since the early 1980s, using as case study the invasion of Grenada in 1983 which ended that country's political experiment. It adopts a historical approach based on a critical review of the literature to explore U.S.' use of its military, political, and economic powers to advance its political and foreign policy goals in the region. Many analysts considered the Reagan Administration's official reason for the invasion as merely a smokescreen for expansion of U.S. influence in the region during its Cold War rivalry with the former Soviet Union. It was an ominous reminder of how powerful nations exploit the vulnerabilities of weaker nations to advance their national interests. The invasion rolled back some of social and economic development gains achieved during Maurice Bishop's brief regime. The U.S. abandoned its obligations to Grenada following the invasion. The invasion complicated U.S.-Caribbean relations in terms of U.S.'s benign neglect of the region while at the same time leveraging its clout to advance its political, strategic/security and economic interests. The lesson is that small nations should strengthen internal democracy and forge regional political and economic ties in order to preserve their sovereignty.

Absentee Ballots” and or “Mail-in ballots” or “Drop-Boxes” create problems for democracy. That’s what the Supreme Court is grappling with today as Republicans push massive voter suppression laws across the country, admitting that they can’t win without making it harder for Black and Brown Democrat leaning people to vote. And guess what? They maybe Right!

"There is a tendency to interpret Trump's election as a victory of some new, dynamic factors. Many speak about a 'popular uprising against the elites', coupled with the rise of 'white racism', 'populism' and Trump's 'animal magnetism' among his supporters [...]. Without doubting that these factors played some part [...] the voting behaviour surveys on election day suggest a completely different picture. According to them, Trump appears to have won precisely for the opposite reasons: on one hand, the routine attitude of 90 percent of Republican voters who supported him as they would have done with any other candidate of their own party, and on the other, by the incredibly inane strategy of his opponents. In this sense, Trump's election must be interpreted chiefly in negative terms, that is as the outcome of a chain of interconnected failures and accidents by a political system that showed remarkably weak reflexes toward the threat of a rising quasi-fascist President"

Anti-Communism is a powerful ideology that advocates for the capitalist western world to oppose and contain communist theories and practices. It dominated mainstream U.S. intelligentsia and policy-making for decades. Guided by this ideology, the U.S denied the legitimacy of the Chinese Communist Party-founded People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949 while recognizing western-supported Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan, an island a fraction of the size of China, to be the sole legitimate government of China for 30 years. Framed by the idea, three U.S. administrations since Truman continued to support ROC while failing to fully appreciate the rifts in the titular alliance between the Chinese Communist Party and the Soviet Communist Party. Anti-communism served as a road-map for America’s post-war China policy of alienation and containment, and once embedded in institutions, it exerted sustained impact.

The death of the Christian Right has been prophesised on numerous occasions and yet 2017 sees the movement on the brink of power and influence unimaginable to all but their most committed supporters. The Trump candidacy threatened to split the movement as its aging leadership entered into a Faustian pact with the worldly Donald that compromised all their professed values. And yet the gamble appears to have paid off.

With the next US elections being more than a year away the presidential campaigns have already started. It is no surprise that the current president of the United States, Barack Obama, will run for a second term. Even though there is another democrat who has announced he will run for president, pro-life activist Randall Terry, everyone knows that Barack Obama will be the final democratic candidate for the next US presidential elections.
For the republicans, on the other hand, the air is not that clear yet. For the time being 15 republicans have declared candidacy, from the Tea Party Leader, Michele Bachmann and gay rights activist Fred Krager to Jonathon Sharkey, a perennial candidate who is also the founder of the Vampires, Witches and Pagans Party. However, only a few names stand out. Ron Paul, Mitt Romney and Michelle Bachmann are the first three who will be introduced in a series of articles that will follow.
