Ivangorodsky K. Sourcing aspects of the reconstruction of the East-Slavs ethnic history in the contemporary Ukrainian historiography.
Introduction. The reconstruction of Eastern Slavs’ communities’ ethnic history before the Mongol era is so difficult and complex because of extremely narrow source base. That’s why modern Ukrainian historiography representatives are compelled to offer their own versions either in relation to the Slavs community formation, or directly speaking about the Ukrainians ethnogenesis. However, neither archaeological nor written sources, nor their complex application, yet assist to decide that question, although Ukrainian specialists devote considerable attention and methodological efforts to this.
The purpose of the article is to analyze the validity of the source base at the present stage, which should provide the ethno-historical reconstruction of the East Slavs communities’ formation and development at the pre-Mongol era in the modern Ukrainian historiography framework.
Results. In the process of studying the «East Slavic» medieval ethnological history, Ukrainian scholars traditionally turn to the chronicle tradition, although they realize importance of the other types of sources. Demystification of falsified sources by modern scholars is also very important. Certain skepticism about non-written sources of medieval ethno-history exists in this problem historiography. However, quite often historians are limited by sources’ fragments, while neglecting the establishment of their origin and semantics.
Involvement of archaeological sources in ethno-historical reconstructions requires consideration of the theoretical and methodological specifics of their interpretation. Most Ukrainian archaeologists rightly emphasize that real breakthrough in the expansion of the so-called «early Slavic archeology» source base, as well as its scientific interpretation, took place in the last third of the twentieth century. On the other hand, in recent decades the process of active fieldwork in Ukraine has practically ceased. Unfortunately, anthropology has a lesser source base than archeology. There are no materials for craniology, due to the ritual of fervidation, common for Slavs in the pre-modern period. The main attention of Ukrainian historians regarding the source base of ethno-historical reconstructions is traditionally devoted to the Old-Rusian chronicle and, in the first place, to the «Tale of Bygone Years» However, in contemporary Ukrainian historiography researchers are skeptical in estimation of this work as the historical source.
Conclusion. In contemporary Ukrainian historiography, devoted to the ethno-historical reconstructions of the Eastern Slavs communities’ past, major attention is paid to the problem of ethnological purity of the source base, in particular, in terms of its rethinking. On the other hand, it has to be noted number of theoretical and methodological weaknesses in this perspective, which are related to the strength of ethno-historiographic stereotypes that have developed in relation to this branch at the earlier stages of historical science development in Ukraine.

A promising scientific direction for today is the historiography of international relations. It involves the study of many theoretical and practical aspects. Today there are virtually no historiographical studies of fortification systems as one of the factors of international relations. The methodological basis for this study was a historiographical method combined with other general scientific methods. The logical and problem-chronological methods are also used. The source of the work was the scientific research of contemporary Ukrainian authors. The aim of this paper is to introduce the reader to the achievements of current Ukrainian historiography with regard to research into fortifications situated in the territory of the present-day Ukraine. It has to be noted that the researchers discussed in the paper have studied the fortifications from different perspectives, describing them as military installations, historic sites, architectural complexes, but also as cultural phenomena, having an unquestionable influence on the existence of the fortification crew and the local community. The study is a Ukrainian version of the publication “Historyk w świecie szańców, bastionów, rawelinów…. XVIII-wieczne obiekty fortyfikacyjne leżące na terenach dzisiejszej Ukrainy we współczesnej historiografii ukraińskiej”.

Ivangorodsky K. Ukrainian national historiography of the 1990th in perception of modern ukrainian historians
One of the most important instrument for keeping any process normal is the introspection by its subject that allows him to avoid mistakes and to refuse incorrect belief, ideas and stereotypes in perspektive. Such procedure is extremely useful for any national historiography, especially for Ukrainian, becouse its latest stage of development is not long enough as the independent discipline. Therefore, it is possible to recognize the professional Ukrainian historians interest to its first steps quitely natural taking in account their role in creation of the new researching field.
As the purpose of this study is provided  historiographic analysis of the modern historiography in context of the Ukrainian national historical science (the 1990ths) development. We are interested in the Ukrainian historiography exactly «national» by its orientation. In the structure of modern world historical science it looks like an unusual atavism which seems to many researchers outside Ukraine as the outdated archaism.
The most problem segment of the Ukrainian national historiography in the 1990th, from the leading modern specialists historiographers point of view, is the  theoretical and methodological (including terminological and conceptual)  equipment of the latest historical researches. This circumstance was noted by such researches as V. Smoliy, A. Reient, A. Udod, A. Yas, Y. Kalakura, L. Zashkilniak, Y. Grytsak, G. Kasianov, I. Kolesnyk etc.
Was made the conclusion that perception by modern Ukrainian experts of the national historiography in the 1990th contains both sharp critical and positive remarks. It allows to hope for the further growth of  historiography in Ukraine.

У дисертації вперше у вітчизняній науці проведене комплексне історіографічне дослідження вивчення української національної ідентичності в кінці ХХ – на початку ХХІ століття. Здійснено короткий екскурс в історію студій поняття «ідентичність», вперше описаного представниками психоаналізу З. Фройдом, К. Г. Юнгом, Е. Фроммом. Згодом у роботах соціолога Е. Еріксона було сформовано базову для подальших досліджень теорію «криз ідентичності».  Завдяки накопиченню знань про процес формування нації соціологами, політологами та етнологами було теоретично окреслено явище «національна ідентичність». У дисертації осмислено основні світові класичні та модерні теорії, напрямки розуміння процесів ідентифікації націй як сучасних громадянсько-політичних спільнот. Вдосконалено періодизацію вивчення проблеми з її обґрунтуванням у контексті розвитку вітчизняного історіографічного процесу, новітніх теоретичних підходів і методології. Всебічно проаналізовано основні етапи, напрямки та особливості вивчення теми. Виділено два історіографічні періоди наукової розробки теми: 1) ранній (середина ХІХ ст. – кінець 1980-х рр.) 2) сучасний (1990 р. – наші дні). Представники раннього етапу хоча й не оперували сучасною термінологією, однак у своїх наукових доробках чітко окреслювали сутність, функції та структуру явища. Серед таких дослідників можна виділити М. Костомарова, В. Антоновича, М. Міхновського, В. Вернадського, Д. Донцова та ін. Ці студії успішно продовжили українські вчені, які перебували в еміграції у країнах Західної Європи та Північної Америки (О. Кульчицький, О.-І. Бочковський, В. Старосольський, Б. Цимбалістий, В. Янів та ін.). У межах сучасного періоду ми умовно виокремлюємо чотири етапи (1990-1996 рр., 1997-2004 рр., 2004-2014 рр., 2014 р. – наші дні), кожен з яких значною мірою залежав від суспільно-політичних обставин у державі, що детермінували зміни підходів до розуміння, виділення окремих аспектів національної ідентичності у вітчизняній науці. Дослідження проблем української ідентичності еволюціонували від мінімального вдосконалення вже наявних вчень, (наприклад, Е. Сміта, Ю. Хабермаса, Б. Андерсона) до вироблення авторських унікальних концепцій. Під умовною назвою ці «гібридні» концепції краще апробуються в сучасних українських реаліях. Також у дослідженні приділено увагу структурі української національної ідентичності та пріоритетності її складових, оскільки ця тема займає одне з чільних місць в історіографії проблеми. Проблема функціонального потенціалу поняття української ідентичності у візіях вітчизняних вчених також залишається дискусійною і досі. Серед дослідників розвитку української нації та її ідентичності виокремлюється кілька груп науковців, які по-різному маркують початок появи національних ідентитетів в українців. Загалом ми виділяємо 4 основних підходів у цій періодизації: «руський» (ХІІІ – XV ст.), «домодерної нації» (з кінця ХVI – до середини ХVII ст.), «модерної нації» (з початку ХХ ст.), сучасний (від 1991 р. – донині). Важливими з точки зору наочного побутування ідентифікаційних практик є вітчизняні наукові доробки, які стосуються виявів української національної ідентичності. Розглянуто дослідницькі позиції з цього питання в архітектурі (Б. Черкес, Я. Юрик, Р. Гнідець), монументальному мистецтві (І. Коваль, В. Підшивалкіна, О. Яремчук), фінансово-економічній сфері (Т. Шемет, С. Франклін, Е. Віддіс), одязі (Л. Пономар, В. Косів), літературі (Л. Василик, Т. Урись, Д. Семенова) тощо.

РЕЗЮМЕ

У монографії розглянуто тексти та дослідницькі практики визначних представників українського історіописання ХІХ — 80-х років ХХ ст. у світлі культурних епох і стилів мислення. З перспективи пізньопросвітницького історіописання та раннього романтизму проаналізовано багатотомні історії Дмитра Бантиша-Каменського  і Миколи Маркевича, в т. ч. їх сприйняття у культурному просторі імперії Романо-
вих. У руслі романтичної парадигми представлено численні та розмаїті тексти Михайла Максимовича, Миколи Костомарова і Пантелеймона Куліша, зокрема визначена їх роль у професіоналізації українського історіописання. Окреслено стильові сполучення й інструментальні вподобання у студіях Володимира Антоновича та Михайла Драгоманова у контексті поширення «першого» позитивізму. Розібрано дослідницькі стратегії «критичного» позитивізму, соціологізації та віталізму у монументальному проекті «Історії України-Руси» Михайла Грушевського. Висвітлено неоромантичні візії української історії у працях В’ячеслава Липинського та Степана Томашівського. Показано змагання різних підходів з обсягу «масової» історії в українській історіографії 1920-х років, зокрема розглянуто концепцію «генетичної соціології» Михайла Грушевського, теорію «єдиного процесу» Михайла Слабченка, конструкцію «господарської автономії» України Олександра Оглоблина та спробу більшовицько-марксистської соціологізації історії Матвія Яворського. Подано огляд текстів Бориса Крупницького й Олександра Оглоблина, зокрема простежено відображення викликів повоєнної соціогуманітаристики та старих інтелектуальних порахунків українського історіописання в їх роботах еміграційного періоду. Проаналізовано рецепцію концептуальних пропозицій західної соціогуманітаристики у переддень «антропологічного повороту» у текстах Бориса Крупницького. Розглянуто студії Федора Шевченка та Олени Компан як представників реформістського (нонконформістського) напряму в українській радянській історіографії. У книзі показано, що методологічні та культурні трансформації суттєво не змінили ідею територіальної минувшини на обох берегах Дніпра як єдиної історії України від ранніх часів.

SUMMARY

This monograph examines the texts and research practices of leading 19th and 20th century Ukrainian historians and the reception of their work. It includes the multi-volume histories of the late-enlightenment and early-Romantic historians Dmytro Bantysh-Kamensky, Mykola Markevych, Mykhailo Maksymovych, Mykola Kostomarov, Panteleimon Kulish, the early positivists Volodymyr Antonovych and Mykhailo Drahomanov, Mykhailo Hrushevs’ky’s “critical positivist” sociology, and, the neo-romantics Viacheslav Lypyns’ky and Stefan Tomashivs’ky. It then covers Hrushevs’ky’s work in Soviet Ukraine and the work of Ukrainian historians Mykhailo Slabchenko, Oleksander Ohloblyn and Matviy Yavors’ky. The impact of western European sociology and anthropology is traced in Borys Krypnytsky’s post-war publications. Finally the book reviews the 1960s Soviet Ukrainian “reformist” writings of Fedir Shevchenko and Olena Kompan. The book seeks to demonstrate that changes in methodologies and broader cultural currents did not appreciably change the idea that the history of the territories on both sides of the Dnieper constituted a single continuous Ukrainian history from earliest times.

РЕЗЮМЕ

У монографії розглянуто тексти та дослідницькі практики визначних представників українського історіописання ХІХ — 80-х років ХХ ст. у світлі культурних епох і стилів мислення. З перспективи пізньопросвітницького історіописання та раннього романтизму проаналізовано багатотомні історії Дмитра Бантиша-Каменського  і Миколи Маркевича, в т. ч. їх сприйняття у культурному просторі імперії Романо-
вих. У руслі романтичної парадигми представлено численні та розмаїті тексти Михайла Максимовича, Миколи Костомарова і Пантелеймона Куліша, зокрема визначена їх роль у професіоналізації українського історіописання. Тут розглянуто твори вченого, періодичні та неперіодичні видання,  в яких він публікував свої студії, найважливіші населені  пункти,  місцевості та регіони,  пов’язані  з біографією науковця,  окреслено  сфери і напрями його діяльності. Подано інформацію про відомих дослідників життя і творчості видатного діяча та їхній внесок у костомаровознавство.  Видання містить також наукову термінологію та понятійний апарат.

Публікується виявлений авторкою єдиний відомий на сьогодні ориґінальний відбиток групової фотографії, зробленої під час відзначення ювілею акад. М.Грушевського у жовтні 1926 р. Показано процес атрибуції всіх зображених на світлині 24-х осіб, коротко висвітлено долі вчених. З’ясоване місце, де було зроблено фотографію, описано інтер’єри зали засідань та проведено реконструкцію всього помешкання в будинку по вул. Володимирській, 37 у Києві, де у 1925–1928 рр. розташовувались Історичні установи Всеукраїнської академії наук. Поставлено питання стосовно долі меблів та колекції килимів, що належали Історичним установам. На підставі залучення додаткових архівних джерел, у тому числі даних метеоспостережень, висловлено припущення щодо  дати знімку.

The author publishes the imprint of a unique group photo made during Mykhailo Hrushevs’kyi jubilee celebration in October 1926. The publication presents the process of attribution of all 24 persons, fixed at the photo, and highlights their fates. The author locates the place where the photo was taken, describes the meeting room’s interiors and reconstructs the apartments in a building at 37 Volodymyrs’ka Street in Kyiv, where the Historical Institutions of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences had been housed in 1925–1928. The author raises the question about the fate of furniture and the carpet collection that had belonged to the Historical Institutions. On the basis of additional archival sources, including meteorological data, an assumption about the date of photo is made.

The article examines the historiographical heritage, which highlights the problem of economic policy of the Russian government in Southern Ukrainian lands in the late 18th — early 19th century. The author divided the literature that analyzed in three fields: colonization of the Ukrainian Steppe, spreading the Russian financial and tax system on Ukrainian territory and the formation of Southern Ukrainian lands as part of Russian trade. The author notes that most researchers of the problem tend to think  that the leading purpose of  imperial powers remained full involvement of the Southern-Ukrainian economy into the Russian Empire’s one.

CONTACTS BETWEEN THE LOCAL HISTORIAN YOSYP GRONSKYI AND SCIENCE AND CULTURE FIGURES: SELECTED ASPECTS (based on the personal archival fond)

The work aims at study of the scientific heritage of the Lviv local historian Yosyp Gronskyi through his contacts with scientific and cultural  community in the 1960s–1980s and popularization of the researcher’s creative work. The scientific novelty is to introduce into the scientific circulation littleknown historical documents from personal fond of Yosyp Gronskyi (F. 214), which are stored in the Manuscript Department of the Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library in Lviv. The documents allow a more detailed study of the development of historical local lore in the second half of the XX century. The methodology of the research is based on general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis as well as principles of historism and objectivity. To study the contacts of the local historian with cultural and scientific figures as part of his biography, the methods of biography as a special historical discipline were used. The methods of the archeography are used for the publication of the supplements. The case studies method was used to select documents to illustrate the entire palette of scientific contacts of Yosyp Gronskyi. Conclusions. Documents from the personal archival fond of Yosyp Gronskyi (F. 214) highlight the contacts between the local historian and scientific and cultural community in the second half of the 20 century. These are the contacts between scientists and culture figures of Lviv and Kyiv as well as the hosts of the «Fedoriv readings» in Vilnius. Yosyp Gronskyi’s manuscript heritage reflects his scientific interests in the local history of Lviv and Halychyna. From the perspective of further studies it is necessary to involve documents from other archival fonds from Lviv and Kyiv to find more details about the connections between scientific and cultural communities in the 1960s–1980s. To achieve the aim of the work (popularization of the scientific heritage of Yosyp Gronskyi) it is necessary to publish certain scientific works of the local historian that remain in manuscripts and are little-known to the researchers of Lviv and Halychyna.

This article is aimed at describing the professional life and career of the prominent Ukrainian historian in Canada, Orest Subtelny. The author knew Subtelny personally and points out that his magnum opus, "Ukraine: A History," had a powerful effort on public opinion in Ukraine on the eve of and during the early years of Ukrainian independence.
