USM has envisioned " sustainability " as a core development theme of the university in light of global sustainability issues. In becoming a world-renowned university for sustainability, USM facilitates sustainability attainment through i) innovations and technology, and ii) changes in lifestyles. Subsequently, CGSS has launched a project that engages its surrounding communities via the dissemination of USM " s sustainability lifestyle practices – focusing on the areas of recycling and composting involving awareness campaigns at stakeholders " venues. It was initiated by conducting situational analyses with stakeholders, after which specific sustainability awareness/practices campaigns were then devised, encompassing the setting-up and monitoring of composting units and recycling bins at six schools (SMK Bukit Jambul, SMK Bukit Gambir, SMK Dato " Haji Mohd Noor Ahmad, SK Minden Height, SK Sungai Gelugor and SK Bukit Gambir), commercial entities (Giant Superma...

Recycling practice is important in forming sustainable campus community. Unfortunately, recycling has not been widely practice by Malaysian. Government target of achieving 22 percent in recycling by 2020 could become faking truth, compared to Thailand, Singapore, Japan and China. This paper explore responds on community of Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang campus on recycling practice toward sustainable lifestyle with recycle bins are colour coded to differentiate the category of waste. The result indicates positive responds but a need to rigorously change attitude in recycling to the campus community.

The objectives of this study are to examine the effect of non-audit services on audit fees, to investigate the relationship between non-audit fees and the issuance of qualified audit opinion, and to analyse the proportion of non-audit fees to total fees paid by a client to its auditor. The regression analysis reveals a significant positive relationship between audit fees and non-audit fees, which is contrary to the theory available in the literature. Further tests are done and alternative explanations are provided. The results obtained from the t-test suggest a significant relationship between non-audit fees and qualified audit opinions. The outcomes indicate that on average audit opinions are dependent on the amount of non-audit fees. Finally, the descriptive analysis presents a worrying development about the ratio of non-audit fees to total fees. The study suggests ways to improve the independence issues in Malaysia.

We believe that this project will provide a platform to assess the level of sustainability integration across USM and its neighboring communities via community engagement practices. Participation from various community groups in the study area will also facilitate better understanding in finding ways to promote sustainability through awareness campaigns, knowledge transfer and community engagement on various levels.

Public universities in Malaysia have recently established additional administrative divisions called the Industry and Community Network (ICN). In its various forms as manifested through different higher learning institutions, ICN seeks to engage with the industry and community towards achieving sustainable development and transformation of the economy, culture, education, health and environment of the society and nation. Diverse approaches are henceforth being promoted in developing communities surrounding the ivory towers. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), as the second oldest university in Malaysia which was accorded the APEX (Accelerated Program of Excellence) status by the government in 2008, has launched Community Outreach Programs (COPs) towards realizing goals of its ICN. Employing primary data from in-house publications of the ICN Division of USM, this chapter seeks to shed some light on the role and impact of COPs conducted under the auspices of USM’s ICN, covering the years 2008-2014.In line with its quest towards the accomplishing the ideal of a humanized university or ‘humaniversity’ that not only focuses on academic excellence but also contributes to the development and well-being of its surrounding community, USM's ICN has embarked on a series of ambitious COP projects.

From the earliest times, traditional theatre in Southeast Asia has been shaped by a wide range of religious and cultural influences—those deriving from animism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, as well as from Chinese and western traditions. The overwhelming influences, especially of Hinduism, have had the tendency to obscure contributions from the Middle- and Near-East. The view that Islam, with rare exceptions, prohibits performing arts has resulted in a negligence of these arts forms in Muslim societies with the possible exception of Indonesia. This paper highlights significant elements of Islamic culture that have shaped Indonesian and Malay traditional theatre through the adaptation of borrowed genres such as taziya, as well as locally created styles of shadow play (wayang kulit) and the doll-puppet theatre (wayang golek); the use of important themes from Islamic literature, in particular thosederived from Hikayat Amir Hamza; as well as esoteric interpretationsof certain episodes ori...
