Visual Management

Visual management aims to connect and align the principles, goals and culture of a company through the practical transmission of information in the workplace itself, creating an efficient flow of information and a high transparent of the work environment. The inability of a production process to communicate with people directly contributes to the construction's low production performance, increases process rework / waste and reduces the quality of the work environment and the final product. Therefore, the research seeks to identify how visual management can be practised in the construction industry and to measure its influence on the production management when applied to a construction site of a multi-floors building. In order to achieve this, the research methodology was based on qualitative information and used bibliographic research, example analysis, data collection and field research. Several visual management applications that could be implemented on a construction site were presented regarding: 5s, site layout, element standardization, general indicators, production guidance, problem solving and continuous improvement, safety and material and logistics management, pull production through kanban, production levelling through heijunka box, andon, prototyping, sampling, poka-yoke and prefabrication, highlighting its functions, its mode of application and the importance that this system has in the construction management process. It is concluded that visual devices really are extremely effective in a work environment, increase self-management of the place and, due to their simplicity, do not demand high investments and are hardly rejected by users. For this reason, a great opportunity to apply lean construction philosophy to construction companies.

I developed a framework and procedure to identify, prioritise, execute & track operational improvement opportunities targeting the top operating production losses as reported from the sites Ampla down time loss reporting system. The framework uses visual management tools and lean principles to drive actions for improvements that increase the asset utilisation (availability, performance and quality) metric for the sites processing department.

Proposed this paper is a standardized shop floor control (SFC) model which has been developed to control and enhance processes improvement in both Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and multinationals based in Morocco. The key contribution of this paper is a framework, “Lean Shop Floor Control System” (LSFCS), which responds efficiently to many common Lean Manufacturing (LM), Lean Leadership and SFC requirements by regrouping four main dimensions that are standardization, visual management, daily audits, and kaizen. The LSFCS framework is principally constructed by considering the outcomes achieved during researches submitted by the same authors in connection with LM deployment in Morocco and national culture impact on Lean Leadership and LM maturity.

El presente trabajo de tesis consiste en elaborar una propuesta de integración entre los procesos, las técnicas y herramientas de gestión utilizadas en tres sistemas de gestión: Lean Project Delivery System, el Project Management Institute y Building Information Modeling/Virtual Design and Construction. El objetivo de realizar dicha propuesta es mejorar las prácticas tradicionales relacionadas a la gestión visual y de las comunicaciones durante la etapa de diseño de los proyectos de construcción en Lima-Perú.

Esta tese integra princípios da Gestão Visual, do Lean e da Usabilidade ao Desenvolvimento de Projetos por meio de uma nova forma de abordagem. Essa integração ainda não foi vista na literatura de forma sistematizada, seja em um modelo ou por meio de um arranjo conceitual. As iniciativas atuais que apresentam esse tipo de abordagem, são limitadas e não utilizam a visualização como principal eixo condutor do processo. A pesquisa tem como objetivo desenvolver, aplicar e avaliar um modelo de Gestão Visual que promova maior visualização ao processo de desenvolvimento de projetos. A metodologia descreve a estruturação do modelo; da pesquisa de campo; bem como a aplicação e avaliação do modelo. Os resultados apresentam o modelo proposto; a aplicação como estudo de caso; e a percepção dos usuários quanto ao modelo. A pesquisa no exterior enfatiza as entrevistas com profissionais da área descrevendo como suas empresas abordam o desenvolvimento de projetos. Como resultado, foi possível concluir que o Modelo de Gestão Visual de Projetos se direciona para necessidades inerentes da prática projetual, apresentando princípios e ferramentas que promovem maior visualização ao processo de desenvolvimento de projetos. São descritos, também: o modelo desenvolvido; a aplicação como estudo de caso por meio de dois projetos práticos em disciplina no curso de graduação em design; e os resultados da pesquisa com especialistas. As considerações apresentam potencialidades e oportunidades visualizadas após a aplicação do modelo.

Resumo Esta pesquisa apresenta por meio de estudo de caso um Mode-lo de Gestão Visual de Projetos aplicado junto à prática proje-tual de design. Os Procedimentos Metodológicos incluem uma revisão de literatura dos temas que embasaram a construção do modelo: Desenvolvimento de Projetos, Design Thinking e Gestão Visual; e também a aplicação de tal modelo como es-tudo de caso. Como resultado, são descritos o modelo desen-volvido e a sua aplicação como estudo de caso por meio de dois projetos práticos em disciplina no curso de graduação em design. As considerações fi nais apresentam potencialidades e novas oportunidades visualizadas após a aplicação do modelo. Abstract This study presents an innovation Model of Project Visual Management applied to design practices through a case study. The methodology procedures include a literature review about the subjects that supported the model framework: Project Development, Design Thinking and Visual Management ; and its application as a case study. As outcomes, the model developed and its applications are described as a case study through two applied projects in graduation courses of design. The fi nal conclusion shows potentialities and new opportunities noticed after those applications.

This project was developed in the framework of the Dissertation Project within in the Master
in Industrial Engineering and Management of the University of Minho, 5th year, 2nd
semester. This project had the main objective of implementation of Standard Work and
other tools and techniques of the organizational production model Lean Production in the
door assembly section of the elevators company Schmitt + Sohn Elevadores.
The research methodology used was the Action Research. This research began with a
bibliographic review of Lean Production, history, principles, implementation and benefits,
the main tools used in this organizational model, such as 5S, Visual Management, Kaizen and
Standard Work. The diagnosis of the company started by making a presentation and
characterization of the company followed by a more comprehensive description and
detailed analysis of the functioning of the section object of this project. Given the large
number of products produced it was necessary to choose only one to do a more thorough
analysis. Thus, were analyzed several parameters (value stream, activities in the workplace,
time, non-compliance, competencies, etc.) to identify the aspects that could be improved.
Based on the recognition of the problems found were identified some proposals that could
solve them, some have been implemented and others have not. Based on the Lean ideology
of "doing more with less" the vast majority of the proposals did not bring significant costs to
the company managing to have interesting improvements. In this sense, many of the
proposals are related to the better organization of factory space and the creation of
documents in order to create a more harmonious, healthy and safe for everyone workplace.
The various proposals for improvement suggested brought many positive impacts such as
eliminating various distances traveled by the operators (90m), reducing time spent searching
for materials (80%), reduced idle time (92%) and increasing the capacity of the supermarket
(50%).

The latest reforms have included further deregulation and limiting the availability of bank finance at fixed low interest rates, previously regarded as a necessity for investment in growth and refurbishment of housing stock. These are challenging times for Housing Associations; forcing leaders to effectively manage organisational business performance, becoming less reliant on regulatory bodies for guidance and legitimation.

This paper presents the concept for the integration of Indoor Positioning System (IPS) and
Building Information Model (BIM), and hypothesizes about the possible benefits of this
integration to situational awareness and visual management in construction projects.
Literature review shows that the volume and quality of data enabling situational
awareness during construction projects is increasing with the use of new technologies, such
as indoor positioning systems and other applications of Internet of Things (IoT). However,
these information streams have been used individually so far.
BIM as the interface integrating different streams of situational awareness information
can result in better data-driven construction management and production. This study
suggests that using BIM in 3D visualization of the indoor positioning of construction
resources (workers, material, and equipment) enables visual management based on
situation awareness on construction project activities. Better situational awareness of
construction resources on-site based on visualization in BIM can improve the identification
and elimination of waste and the identification of workflow interruptions, potentially
permitting better planning and increasing productivity.
The study suggests further steps for empirical research to prototype the concept and
validate it with industry partners and practitioners.

Health and safety issues in construction are a major source of concern across the world. Dealing with accidents and their aftermaths has a significant impact for construction firms as the prevention of such issues protects lives of workers and enhances efficiency and performances. In the Nigerian construction industry, this issue is even more substantial because many indigenous construction firms operating in the country do not value and prioritise risks and health and safety. As a result, accidents occur unnecessarily, which have a negative impact on the overall firms’ performance. Although the application of lean theory has been found to improve construction safety in other parts of the world, in Nigerian safety research, this problem has not been addressed fully and there is no safety framework available for accident prevention. The central aim of this research is to investigate how the adoption of lean practices can be the foundation for a safety system in the Nigerian construction industry.

To this end, the thesis contains an extensive literature review on sociotechnical systems theory, being the umbrella theory adopted in this study to understand the problems associated with construction safety and explore how risks can be mitigated using lean practice. The thesis further focuses on three lean construction techniques: the 5S Methodology, Visual Management and the A3/PDCA and their deployment. The goal is to apply these tools to develop a lean safety framework that construction firms in Nigeria can make use of to mitigate accidents and their root causes.

A qualitative study was conducted applying multiple case study design. In total, twenty-seven semi-structured interviews and non-participant observations were used to collect data from six indigenous construction companies in Nigeria: three small-scale and three medium scale companies. The collected data were thematically analysed.

The study found five major root causes of accidents in the Nigerian construction industry: (i) lack of information, knowledge, and training; (ii) inability to identify or recognise hazards/unsafe conditions in the worksite before the start of tasks; (iii) identifying hazards/unsafe conditions and continuing to work without first eliminating the hazards/unsafe condition; (iv) management failure to provide safe work environment; and (v) negative behaviour and attitude towards safety by workers. The study also found that the 5S methodology, visual management and the A3/PDCA can be implemented in a safety system to mitigate accident root causes. This led to the development of a Lean Safety Framework (figure 10).

Thus, the study has established that by providing a Lean Safety Framework (LSF), construction firms can improve health and safety performance and minimize the risks. Along with the developed framework, recommendations are provided for its use. This research makes two core contributions. It has contributed to theory development by expanding the use of sociotechnical systems theory, and by using the theory to detail how lean practice can be applied in safety systems to mitigate accident root causes in construction. It has contributed to the practice of lean and safety in Nigerian construction by developing a Lean Safety Framework that construction firms in the country can make use of to improve safety performance and save lives.

This theoretical study encompasses the role of digitalization in visual management (VM) applied in construction projects to increase the situational awareness (SA) of construction workers and crews. A literature review on VM, SA and self-managed crews shows that the level of digitalization in the construction industry is low when compared to other industries, that information silos are a common practice and that the decision-making processes depend largely on the construction manager role, causing a bottleneck of information and repeated time waste. As more digitalization enters construction sites and the amount and quality of available data increases, appropriate use of this data can bring meaningful improvement to construction site management. The study shows that using updated and real-time data for VM devices can increase information flow among construction workers and crews, increasing SA throughout the construction project. This can enable the construction crews to be more autonomous and self-managed, resulting in decentralized decision-making processes to solve task-related problems. Further steps for empirical research are suggested.

This paper presents a project developed in an elevators company, in the framework of a master thesis at University of Minho. The main objective of this work was to analyse the production system of one assembly section of the company and to implement some proposals that would improve its performance. This objective was achieved by applying Lean Production tools and techniques namely, 5S, Visual Management and Standard Work. With the proposed improvements it was possible to increase the shop floor area, to reduce errors and nonconformities, to reduce the number of required operators and to improve the organization of the production system. These results promoted the reduction of energy and material consumption, mainly due to the decrease of defects and reduction of rework, which are some of the requisites for a company to become eco-efficient.

Visual Management (VM) is integral to the lean philosophy. For example, an Andon makes a light flash in the case of a deviation in the process of assembly or in the product assembled, a Kanban triggers the production of units in order to fill a customer's demand, shadow boards used in 5S help workers to locate their tools easily. What is lacking in the construction industry is simple, cost- and time-effective programs that support the understanding of the work schedule, foster transparency in daily coordination of work space among subcontractors, and facilitate production control. To address these needs, this paper presents a space scheduling program called LOSite developed for a case study project, and demonstrates that space use visualization is possible on large scale projects and can be inexpensive yet worthwhile using. The researchers prototyped LOSite in one week to help visualize the work being done during a project's interiors phase. LOSite was tested over the course of a month. Limitations to the full adoption of LOSite by the team are discussed in this paper.
