Zerocalcare

The American thinker Murray Bookchin was an influential exponent of post-classical anarchism in the 20th-century and father of “social ecology”: his academic research is based on identifying the place in which building the alternative community. His utopia of an ecological society was able to combine Marxist criticism against capitalism along with the anarchist ideas of mutualism and community federations or communes: in the essay The Next Revolution he finally renamed his political theory of libertarian municipalism with the term “communalism”.
According to the critical analysis he developed, the infinite growth of neoliberal capitalism in a finite world like ours is untenable. The solution to the current ecological crisis depends above all on the dissolution of hierarchies, or rather on the end of the domination of human by human, so as to be able to recompose the rift between man and the natural environment. Subsequently, it’s investigated the elective affinity established over the years between the libertarian thought of Bookchin and the one of Abdullah Öcalan, both of them at the ground of the recent revolution in Rojava.
In this autonomous region, located in northern Syria, an innovative model of decentralized self-management has emerged, called “democratic confederalism”. It’s based on freedom, ecology and social equality, in opposition to the capitalist, nationalist and unitary nation-state so far present in the Middle East. In this way, it was created a new political sphere from the vacuum of Syrian state.
At the centre of cantonal municipalities with a Kurdish majority there is indeed a certain group of ethical values, an attention for the educational system and a utopian sensibility, which do not provide for any discrimination of gender, religion and ethnicity according to the “unity in diversity” philosophical principle.

In alcune tavole della graphic novel di Kobane Calling, pubblicata dalla casa editrice Bao nel 2015, il fumettista Michele Rech, in arte Zerocalcare, prova a spiegare il motivo più profondo della sua partenza per un racconto sul conflitto in Siria. La difficoltà di dare a questo parola e immagine si traduce inizialmente in una vignetta pixellata. Una sgranatura, come dice l’autore, che trasmette la difficoltà di messa a fuoco che finisce per rivelare alla fine un cuore pieno di ferite, immagini e parole raccolte altrove.

Questa, probabilmente, è la sequenza che incide quasi come una matrice il lavoro intermediale di Zerocalcare diviso fra l’azione creativa sui livelli di definizione materiale e immateriale dei linguaggi mediatici rispetto alla storia, alla società e agli immaginari e l’espressione sensibile dei chiaroscuri della realtà umana.

Il contributo mira per questo a rileggere alcuni tratti di ibridazione tra pagine e schermi della produzione di Zerocalcare a partire soprattutto da Rebibbia Quarantine, esperimento di ‘sconfinamento’ tra fumetto, reportage e serialità sul web prodotto durante i mesi della pandemia da Covid-19. Più che un nuovo percorso dell’artista, che ha da poco lavorato alla produzione della serie animata per Netflix "Strappare Lungo i Bordi", la serie manifesta i tratti più tipici della rimediazione dei racconti in una prospettiva rigenerativa da parte di Zerocalcare rendendo però più visibili ed espliciti i meccanismi ‘virali’ di interfaccia tra autore, audience e contesto mediale che ‘animano’ la configurazione stessa dell’opera.

In particolare, il saggio approfondisce in una prospettiva visuale opere, usi comunicativi e temi dell'artista che affrontano i dispositivi tecnologici, le esperienze e i media in relazione alle: dinamiche autoriali, fra autofiction e partecipazione collettiva della serie animata confrontandola con i fumetti e le graphic novel precedenti; i caratteri performativi della pratica intermediale dell’autore rispetto ai generi, ai linguaggi, ai piani e alle intersezioni fra parole, immagini e suoni; e la comunicazione social e web.

Costantemente circondati da schermi composti di pixel, siamo oggi sempre più portati a concepire l'interfaccia digitale come naturale finestra sul mondo. Anche le scritture letterarie si sono ritrovate a fare i conti con questa evoluzione tecnologica: da una parte, il display può essere utilizzato per riprodurre la pagina cartacea, che acquisisce così uno statuto ipermediale; dall'altra, tecniche e procedimenti mimetici del display sono sperimentati sulla pagina stessa, per restituire a chi legge l'esperienza percettiva dello schermo. Di fronte alle molteplici e variegate intersezioni tra letteratura e media digitali che lo scenario odierno ci propone, questo volume prende corpo dall'esigenza di monitorare le esperienze recenti in cui autori e autrici si cimentano in produzioni sempre più interattive e performative, dando vita a reticoli testuali aperti e potenzialmente infiniti. Dalla letteratura alle serie tv, dalla poesia al fumetto, dai social network alla retorica visuale: i contributi qui raccolti mostrano la ricchezza di approcci disciplinari e metodologici che è possibile adottare per analizzare le scritture letterarie che continuano a mettersi in gioco nella costruzione di immaginari all'interno del panorama mediale contemporaneo.

[ENGLISH] The essay examines Rebibbia Quarantine, a series of animated shorts released by renowned Italian comic artist Zerocalcare (Michele Rech) both on his social network channels and via television broadcast in the Spring of 2020. The series chronicles the consequences of the lockdown on the author himself and the people of his neighbourhood, Rebibbia (a suburban district of Rome). While these shorts are comedic in tone, I argue they can actually be considered as an example of 'graphic journalism', albeit combined with a semi-autobiographical, diaristic narrative. This paper engages in a close reading of Zerocalcare's pandemic related shorts, exploring their peculiarities as regards to content, style and format, and underlining their importance in the Italian media covering of the Covid-19 crisis.

[ITALIANO] Il saggio esamina Rebibbia Quarantine, una serie di cortometraggi animati pubblicata dal noto fumettista italiano Zerocalcare (Michele Rech) sui suoi canali social e in televisione nella primavera del 2020. La serie documenta le conseguenze del lockdown sia sull'autore in prima persona che sugli abitanti del suo quartiere, Rebibbia. Sebbene i corti siano di tono comico, si propone qui di considerarli un esempio di graphic journalism, per quanto ibridato con una narrativa semi-autobiografica e diaristica. Attraverso un close reading dei corti di Zerocalcare sul tema della pandemia, questo contributo ne esplora le peculiarità relative ai contenuti, allo stile e al mezzo espressivo, sottolineandone l'importanza nella narrazione mediatica italiana della crisi generata dal Covid-19.

Mobilizing the perspective of a Millennial author of comic books (Zerocalcare), a Gen-Xer author (Murgia) and the Boomer filmmaker who adapted her debut book into a film (Virzì), this essay invites to look at the poetics of precarity in 21st century Italian culture through the lens of generational divides. Its main argument is that one of the most generative (and nefarious) shifts of paradigms produced by precarization was an unprecedented overlapping of class and generation. Its main focus is on Murgia's 2006 book Il mondo deve sapere, and on the rhetorical and ideological shifts with which its 2008 adaptation, Tutta la vita davanti, subverted and appropriated its first-hand take on precarity. Articulated from the position of a Millennial Italian who was trained as a literary historian in the late years of Berlusconian hegemony, the essay concludes on an episode from Murgia's 2015 novel Chirù. It interprets its symbolism and power dynamics as a comment on the generational struggle produced by the emergence of precarity in the economic and poetic dimension of Italian art.

This paper analyses the importance of new reform movements and social media, and the construction of a new global citizenship, in the production of Zerocalcare. This young artist’s works are deeply connected with everyday life and, at the same time, with international political problems. Social media are the real responsibles of his national success, particulary his own blog (www.zerocalcare.it)  which has become the most widespread vehicle of his works. This article investigates the role played by Zerocalcare’s blog in the creation of a new sense of global cultural citizenship among his audience, mainly belonging to the eighties generation.

In Italy, following the 2008 global financial crisis, the economic wealth and social stability that younger generations relied on went from being a certainty to a major source of concern. The increasing precariousness of a neoliberal economy has led to a shift in youths’ ability to project themselves into the future, creating a problematic existential impasse and the increasing necessity for individual stability and security, promoting aggressive attitudes towards the Other. Furthermore, the focus on the individual undermined social and affective relationships, pushing subjects to fight alone, rather than collectively, against the intrinsic risks of life itself. Focusing on Italian youth, the article aims to investigate the economic and affective consequences of precarization through a formal and theoretical analysis of Macerie prime (2017) and Macerie prime. Sei mesi dopo (2018), two autobiographically inspired comic books by Italian comic artist Zerocalcare. Ultimately, the article will examine Zerocalcare’s call for ontological precariousness as the unifying aspect of human existence and a means to re-evaluate the affective relations in times of increasing socio-economic precarity and individualization
