About this audiobook
**One of BuzzFeed's Great LGBTQ+ YA novels to Warm up Your Winter * A Kid's Feb/March IndieNext pick**
From New York Times bestselling author Claire Legrand comes a new, bone-chilling YA horror novel about a girl who joins a coven to root out a vicious evil that’s stalking her village. Perfect for fans of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Grace Year.
Her name is unimportant.
All you must know is that today she will become one of the four saints of Haven. The elders will mark her and place the red hood on her head. With her sisters, she will stand against the evil power that lives beneath the black mountain—an evil which has already killed nine of her village’s men.
She will tell no one of the white-eyed beasts that follow her. Or the faceless gray women tall as houses. Or the girls she saw kissing in the elm grove.
Today she will be a saint of Haven. She will rid her family of her mother’s shame at last and save her people from destruction. She is not afraid. Are you?
This searing and lyrically written novel by the critically acclaimed author of Sawkill Girls beckons readers to follow its fierce heroine into a world filled with secrets and blood—where the truth is buried in lies and a devastating power waits, seething, for someone brave enough to use it.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a captivating and relatable story that explores themes of religion, misogyny, and personal empowerment. The writing style and narration are praised, although some readers found the ending to be slightly disappointing. The first half of the book is described as slow, but the story picks up and becomes darker in the second half. Overall, readers highly recommend this book and hope for a sequel.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The first half of the book is kind of slow, a lot of building up for the second half. Once the story starts moving along, it gets a bit darker. The truth behind the community of Haven was a bit shocking, if not a little predictable. There were moments that lived up to the genre category of “horror” but just barely. I did like how the characters choose their names.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The writing style and narration were on point. After chapter one I had to binge the rest. The way in which religion can pin so much on women is so relatable, even if not to the extreme depicted in the book. Also, I did not find the book predicable in the least. The only thing that stopped me from giving five stars was the ending. To me, it reminded me of the movie “Return of the King,” as in the book had three opportunities to end but kept going. The last chapter opens things for a continuation of the series-which I’ll admit, I read/listen to the first chance I get, but, I thought it slightly diminished how singular this book truly is. So, save for the last hour/three chapters, i highly recommend this book as a read/listen.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This quickly has become one of my favourite novels. The first bit of the book follows a somewhat predictable but highly enjoyable "woman who was raised in a violently misogynistic community comes into her own power" plot and then the story just keeps getting bigger. I kept expecting an ending whenever something shocking happening, but the story would keep going. The ending was very satisfying while leaving a perfect opening for a sequel, which I desperately hope is in the works!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was not what I expected . . .
I think I expected the story if witches. But I did not expect the story of forced religion, forced penitence, forced misogyny or the ignorant people who blindly follow. And it is always a bitter pill to swallow. To know that we as women can be so physically, mentally and emotionally weak that we could actually end up in a position such as Rage and the rest of these girls. It was a slow start for me but I did enjoy this book.
4 stars - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Holy freaking hell!! This was amazing. Claire Legrand continues to write amazing books. This is a must-read!
