About this audiobook

A New York Times bestseller!

This sparkling edition includes a special case stamping, bonus content, and a teaser to book two in this heart-pounding series!

Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, this young adult fantasy follows the forbidden romance between a powerful prince and an ordinary girl as they try to survive their kingdom’s grueling laws pitting them against each other.

She is the very thing he’s spent his whole life hunting.
He is the very thing she’s spent her whole life pretending to be.

Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be keenly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can to stay alive and out of trouble…easier said than done.

When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya’s princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites’ powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is…completely Ordinary.

Honestly I complained the entire time I read this book saying I didn’t like it but then the last 20% of the book saved it for me. Now I’m curious what reckless has to offer…

I like the narrators for the characters. The book kept my attention and the story was very interesting. There’s a lot of chemistry between the main characters. I am giving it 4 stars because of the following … This book was pretty violent for my taste. I thought it was pushing the envelope when she “gifted” him a kill. I would’ve liked it better also if there was less coarse language.

It was a good read. Plenty of parts to keep you hooked. I only wish the main characters acted on their love for each other. It consistently left me feeling annoyed. Overall, a well written book.

The trials are very Hunger Gameish. Which I love. But the background of the players is what’s best. I really enjoyed getting to know everyone and I cried during the last trial. If you wanna know why, go grab it. It’s worth it.

I absolutely loved this book! The teasing slow burn romance, banter between characters, dynamics of elite MMC and ordinary FMC, and the ruthlessness of the purge trials — nothing like daily near death experiences to bring you together… right? I could not stop, it’s after 2am and I’m just finishing. I need more now!

If you enjoy fantasies with a good story line and well thought out world building, sassy/angsty FMCs and wanna be good bad boy MMCs you should definitely give this a read:)

I would say this has Hunger Games vibes but the ones in power (elites) possess supernatural abilities who want to banish those without any abilities (ordinaries) to ‘keep their powers stronger’.

I also like how the title is a reoccurring theme.
In situations that you feel so out of your depth that you have no power to change the outcome or stand up for yourself. And the main character is not gifted with these abilities so is powerless herself.

She’s a thief and he’s a prince and he is the enforcer to rid the kingdom of her kind. Gotta read to see how it ends — definitely loved the cliff hanger!
Can’t wait to pick up the next book by Lauren Roberts!

Also quick shout out to her because I found out she wrote this book at 18years old!!! That blows my mind and honestly it’s not like many people can write this kind of a story at that age… she’s got my respect there! She did take a lot of inspiration from her favorite books so it gives the book a familiar feeling that grabbed me in and hooked me.

I would give this book 3.5 stars but system won’t allow. I didn’t like how similar the plot seemed to another series in the beginning and middle of the book. I did like the banter between Paedyn and Kai. I did like the last quarter of the book better and there were a couple twists which I didn’t see coming if I always enjoy. All in all a solid first book in the series.

Good YA Novel. It was like the Hunger Games with a little bit of magic. The Chapter 55 onward had me on the edge of my seat slowly but surely. Love the FMC and the Princes are just adorable. I had fun reading this more then I thought I would.

Switched between the ebook and audiobook and loved how this app allowed me to do that. The narrators were soooo freaking good. First time I listen to a book where they switch between a guy and a girl for each perspective. It really allowed me to get into the world Lauren created. 10/10 recommend!

Such an interesting read. It was hard through the first 1/3 of the book to separate it from HG serious but once you do it’s like WOW!! The first trial is very similar but after that things change. The fact they come back to and forth, having the balls as a mix to the experience changes the flow. Plus the fact that the whole over all theme is actually that the King wants to have the control of those with powers and eliminate those who don’t just to have a “powerful kingdom” , with only citizens who have power. I did find the pull of the relationships with both princes interesting in the fact at times you almost didn’t know who to like more and who she was falling for. The end of the book was so hard to read and I wonder if they even understood that Kia killed her father. For me this makes a huge difference. I may have missed something and they know, but I feel as though they do not. The other that took wanting to yeet the book was Adena’s death. I know as soon as the king said someone to be killed she would be there. I’m surprised that both brothers let this happen with as much passion as they had for Pae. She literally has no one. And yet they’re so upset about their father. So much I want to dive into about this and how it’s made me feel.

All in all a great read and can’t wait to continue this story and the next turn of events for those 3 powerful characters!!

Let me start by saying the narration for the book was excellent; Chase Brown definitely has a future in book narration. The characters were good ; however I feel like they were taken from elements of many of my fave fantasy characters they werent unique. The idea of "powerless" or maybe not yet awakened power by a female (Shadow and Bone / Bring Me your Midnight ) a female avenging the death of a loved one by a resistance ( Ember in the Ashes series) while fighting to the death trial..( also Ember in the Ashes: Helene and Leia were unforgettable female characters fighting for a cause to right wrong and overthrow a ruler who was supported by an elite class. HungerGames/ Divergent )Throw in royal balls (Stephanie Garber Caraval series / Once Upon A Broken Heart) and Hunger games elements Lauren Roberts wrote a decent book but not unique. The audiobook narrators were the only reason i kept reading , if it was a physical book i would have scimmed to the end . Story line 3 ⭐ narration brought it up .
