COACH BIOGRAPHY
Head Coach
LA Road Runners & Program Administrator
Marathon Career
Mark Minichiello is the Head Coach and Program Administrator for the LA Road Runners, the official training program of the Los Angeles Marathon, since 2017. He is a Boston and New York City marathon qualifier, and an Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star Finisher. Mark has completed over twenty-five marathons on four continents.
Coaching History & Philosophy
Mark is a USA Track & Field certified coach and both an RRCA Certified Level 1 Coach and an RRCA Certified Race Director. Mark began his coaching career with the South Bay Runners Club (RRCA & USATF) in Manhattan Beach, California, where he coaches track and marathon training practice. In 2016, Mark was training coach for TEAM PAWS, a national charity, assisting their 550 plus marathon athletes for the Chicago and New York City marathons. In 2017, Conqur Endurance, the owner of the Los Angeles Marathon, selected Mark as their Head Coach to oversee the LA Road Runners, the official training program for the Los Angeles Marathon. Mark has trained thousands of marathoners through this program since 2017. He continues to be the head coach of the LA Road Runners following in the footsteps of such legends as Coach Pat Connelly, Olympic medalist & New York City Marathon winner (1983) Rod Dixon, and Elite Coach Andrew Kastor (husband to Olympic Bronze Medalist and elite athlete Deena Kastor) from Mammoth Track Club.
Mark’s goal over the course of his running career has been to inspire other athletes. He believes training is 30% physical and 70% mental. It is his job to define the objective of his athletes, analyze their results, and provide constructive feedback. As a coach, he provides the athlete with this expertise by explaining the why
, with the goal of empowering the athlete to train optimally. He tries to instill the power of belief, so when his athletes are truly tested, they believe in their ability to accomplish their goal. Mark believes this approach will sustain them in their darkest moments when they want to quit, but don’t! The time and effort required to achieve such mental strength is immense but truly rewarding. Steve Prefontaine said it the best, To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.
MENTAL TOUGHNESS: THE POWER OF BELIEF
Do not underestimate the power of BELIEF! I would like you to understand that your attitude will define your training performance. In my opinion, training for a marathon is 30% physical, and 70% mental. Top athletes always come from a place of confidence and a positive attitude, without self-doubt. The moment you think you can’t achieve your goal it is over! Self-doubt is what keeps most athletes from tapping into their true potential! Never underestimate your ability, as you are stronger than you think you are!
Marathoners come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and abilities. I am often reminded of the power of belief when I hear of people like Harriette Thompson, a 91-year-old marathoner who finished the San Diego Marathon in 2015. How about when Nike dropped Meb Keflezighi from sponsorship, because he was too old. He never doubted his ability and promptly proved Nike wrong by winning the prestigious 2014 Boston Marathon! Rick Hoyt, born with cerebral palsy, told his father in 1977 that he wanted to participate in a five-mile run. That goal took them on a thirty-seven-year odyssey including numerous marathons and Ironman competitions.
Lastly, as I watch athletes with disabilities finish marathons, I am in awe of their perseverance! These athletes have every reason to justify an excuse and quit, but they don’t! They don’t see their handicap as a disability, but rather they see their disability as just another challenge or a badge of honor. The power of BELIEF is what separates great athletes from those that fail to reach their full potential!
