General Overview of the Keto Diet

What is the Keto Diet?

In very blunt terms , the keto diet is a low-carb diet that aims to shift the way your body processes the food that you eat. Typically, your body thrives on the carbohydrates that you give it, and it uses those carbohydrates the boost up your blood sugar. The only problem with that boost is that what goes up, must come down!

Have you ever been sitting at your desk past two in the afternoon and it suddenly feels like your head is a cinder block? Blood sugar crashes can take all the wind out of your sails and they’re far more likely to occur when you’re allowing your body to get all of its energy from carbohydrates.

When you start on keto, you are cutting your carbohydrates down to only 5% of your daily macronutrient intake, with a limit of 20 grams per day. It’s important to track what you’re taking into your body for first few weeks to get a handle on this, but we’ll cover that in a later chapter.

The aim of keto is to shift your body to running on healthy fats and a very specific amount of protein. By giving your body very calculated measurements and percentages of carbs, fats, and proteins, your body is forced to run not only on the fat that you’re giving it but on the fat that your body has stored over the years. So many of us have stores of stubborn fat that simply won’t leave us.

The answer is to give your body no choice but to burn that fat to keep going!

What are its Advantages?

By giving your body more healthy fats like avocados, coconut oil, nuts, and so much more, you are giving your body an alternative fuel source . Your body shifts over to a different mode of metabolism that places your body into a constant state of fat burning, as your body has fat stores that it can use to burn. Your body doesn’t have carb stores to burn, so it shuts down at night.

With the stored fat that so many of us are trying to get rid of, the body has a fuel source to run on always. This can lead to so much more energy than you had before, so get ready to feel the urge to get out and play!

You will find that fat loss comes to you with far less effort than you realized was possible. Because that fat-burning machine within you is working around the clock, the fat will disappear before too long.

So many of us, as we come up over the age of 50, have resigned ourselves to having that bit of excess fat that has never gone away, no matter what exercise, no matter what diet, no matter what. With keto, those problem areas are no longer the exception to the rule. When your body burns fat, it burns all of it!

Many who have tried keto have seen that it makes drastic changes to their quality of life, their health, the clarity of their skin, and even the resolution and improvement of severe physical maladies like type II diabetes!

One of the most popular aspects of keto is that you don’t have to sacrifice flavor and the foods that taste the best in order to succeed in it. There are cheesy, creamy, delicious dishes as well as bright, fresh, and crisp ones. Keto is all about achieving a perfect balance, keeping to that balance, and allowing your body to thrive on what it has.

Things to Keep in Mind

One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to keto is that all fat is created equal, which simply isn’t true. You want to take into account the types of fats you’re eating so you’re giving your body what it needs to thrive, repair, and keep going.

While things like beef, bacon, pork chops, and
