6TH GRADE HAPPENINGS...

Math Night Reminder! Next Wednesday, February 26, from 6:00pm to 7:30pm we will be having our second annual Math Night.This year our theme is "Out of This World" and we have planned many super fun space themed games for the whole family to enjoy. Along with games, we will also have food available for purchase. Please plan on joining us! Where else can you play fun math games, spend time with your family, and eat? !Bentley School, of course! Bentley School will continue collecting pennies for a cause at part of our theme for the school year, Be Yourself, Be Part of a Team, Be Bentley Strong. To show that we are part of a team and Bentley Strong 6th grade will be collecting pennies to benet the Lupus Foundation. Please donate to Girl Scout Troup 505s Used Baby Doll and Used Baby Doll Clothing Drive from January 15th-March15th for little girls who are in need! Boxes are located in your school! American Girl Dolls are welcome! Any questions please email: 505girlscouts@gmail.com. Miles of Smiles will be at Bentley on February 26th. Consent forms came home in your students backpack.!This program provides your child with a dental exam and cleaning at no cost to you or the school.! If interested, please return the completed consent form to school ASAP. If you need another form, please call the school nurse, Kristin Labriola.

MRS. MORGAN This week we continued reading The Watsons Go To Birmingham. Students are really understanding the characters and enjoying the humor. However, the book got real serious when one of the characters is involved in a church bombing. We learned about the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. We are also reading a non ction story about Ancient Egypt. Next week we will read about how Pluto was named and also how Athens got named.

MR. RAKOCZY Rakoczy Language Arts: ! This week we read Maniac Magee. ! It was a realistic ction selection and focused on the theme of persistence and patience to solve a problem. ! We focused on point of view and gurative language. ! In grammar, we worked with helping and action verbs. ! This week we wrote an autobiographical narrative. ! !Our video how to is due on February 28. ! Please read the directions passed out in class on how to post or send to school on a ash drive. !Next week, we will read a expository nonction selection, titled The Kid Who Named Pluto.! We will focus on making judgments, author's purpose, and following multiple step instructions. !During grammar, we will work with action and linking verbs. !In writing, we will write a letter of request. !Please make sure that your son or daughter is reading for 20 minutes a night. Rakoczy Science and Social Studies: !This week we have been learning about Ancient China, classifying plants and animals, and we began our Big 6 Project. ! The Big 6 Project is due on April 4th. ! It will be mainly done at school. !However, please take your son or daughter to the public library or the book store to get a book on their topic. ! Having a book to research from is a mandatory component of the Big 6 Project. ! We will work on the Big 6 Project at least one day a week. ! Next week, we will begin reviewing for our Ch. 1 Science Test, learning more about Ancient China, and working on the Big 6 Project.

MISS TENBROECK Math: This week in math, we began chapter 10 learning about different areas of geometry. We started with types of angles, nding measurements of angles, and triangles. Next week in math, we will continue in chapter 10 learning about quadrilaterals, similar gures and polygons. On Wednesday we will be having the chapter 10 quiz which will cover sections 10-1, 10-3, 10-4, and 10-5. We will review as a class and play a review game on Tuesday! Science/Social Studies: This week in science, students were assigned the Big 6 project. I would like to thank you for taking the time to approve their topics! They were given a packet with instructions and the rubric, as well as a calendar with due dates to help keep students on track throughout the project. The nal project will be due on April 4th. Please ask your child to see the materials! In social studies, we worked in chapter 17 learning about Imperial China. We discussed different Chinese dynasties, Buddhism, and life in Imperial China. Students chose topics from the chapter to practice research on the computer. Next week, we will continue chapter 17 learning more about Chinese society, their technological advancements, and economic growth.

MS. RUHL This week, we nished reading our novel "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon" by Grace Lin! !The kids seemed to enjoy the plot twists and turns. !If your child liked this novel, I recommend they try "Starry River of the Sky," "The Thief Lord," or "Peter and the Star Catchers." !Next week, we will watch "The Wizard of Oz" and do a comparative analysis activity based on the book and the movie. !Our next novel will start during the week of ISAT. !In Grammar we started our study of verbs. !We looked at the roles of helping and main verbs, and next week we will differentiate between linking and action verbs. !In Writing, we will start organizing our ideas for a persuasive writing project next week. !Also next week, our class will begin working on Lesson 18 of Story Town. !There will be some very interesting stories in the textbook and the

MRS. VOSS This week we started Chapter 10, which focuses on geometry. We reviewed types of angles and triangles, and then moved into discussing angle relationships. Students learned the differences between supplementary and complementary pairs of angles and how to nd the missing measure in a triangle. We are moving on to quadrilaterals and will continue our study next week along with learning about similar gures, polygons, and tessellations. Math Night Reminder: !"Out of This World" math night is Wednesday, 2/26, from 6:00pm until 7:30pm. Please bring the whole family for a night of fun space themed math games.
