Hi Parents, I cant believe that it is May! Although I am excited to have spring, when May comes, so does the countdown of the final days of school. There is so much I still need and want to do with the kids. We will be heavy in science this month! Its very exciting and I have a lot of hands-on activities, projects, books, observations with recordings, and more. Not only are we going to learn about Bugs, but we will also be learning about Food Chains. I am excited about this. Each child will also make a book called The Earths Features. It is a neat flip book that I am sure the kids will be excited to share with you. We will learn about different habitats and what animals live in that habitat also. May is going to be an exciting month!!
NOTE: Thanks for all the bug donations! I think we have enough worms now. We are having fun learning about them. We are learning a lot of new science vocab words too such as: Communities, Characteristics, Entomologist, Habitat, Organism, Life Cycle, Needs of Life, and Food Chain.

Reading: Although the school year is winding down, the students will forever read. They have all done a great job, and are continuing to grow as readers! I am so proud of them. They are more confident, have expression, and are remembering to use strategies to help them figure out the words when they get stuck on something. Thanks for your continued support and for encouraging your child to read, even though spring fever sets in. Math: We will be finishing our last two units in math the next few weeks, and final one being all review. Then we will review some of the hard concepts such as counting money and telling time. I found some great online math games for the kids to play in the computer lab too, so we will check those out in the coming weeks. We will also continue to do addition and subtraction timed tests. Keep practicing the extra ones I sent home, Thank you.

In Our Classroom:

SPELLING:
Your child will be tested on these 40 spelling words at the end of the month. These words are from the first two lists of the giraffe book, which are word wall words they have all read, and they should be able to spell correctly. Please practice with your child. I have noticed that many children have been miss-spelling these words in the stories they write. Thank you.

Belmonts Best
Every child was celebrated as one of Belmonts Best this year and enjoyed their time with Mrs. Thelen. The kids also loved their Fly Guy book they received from the PTO. Thank you to them for the great book!

This looks like a silly picture of a habitat, but to the kids, its amazing!! They are so excited to sit around the table and find the insects that we have in it so far. They look for them hiding, crawling, and walking on the ceiling. So far we have worms, pill bugs, sow bugs, ladybugs, centipedes, and crickets. There are many more I am sure the kids will be able to find and collect once it warms up a little outside. Thank you so much for helping your child find them and for preparing the containers for the critters as they make their journey to school. Of course with bugs in a classroom, I am sure you can imagine the kids level of excitement as well. Its a great thing this time of year. One more reason to LOVE first grade!

JA
I forgot to mention to you in the last newsletter that we started our JA program. That stands for Junior Achievement. Miss Bobbie, who is a volunteer and business owner, comes into our room once a week for an hour and teaches us about Families, and how we are to help one another. The program also teaches the students about Needs and Wants. They will learn about getting jobs and saving money too. This is a valuable program and helps to teach some of the Social Studies goals for first grade. See some of the pictures I took of us today, Thursday, May 1, 2014.

We planted Needs and Wants last week. We need vegetables, but want flowers. Once they have grown a little bigger, the kids will take their plants home.
