Classroom News
Hi Parents, Can you believe its almost Oct.? We have finished our studies on summer and are pretty excited about learning about fall and the changes in store for us. One of the themes we have this year in first grade is SEASONS. We are watching and taking note of the changes a maple tree in our schoolyard goes through each season. As we learn about seasons we will keep track of the months in each season, the types of weather, the temperature, and things animals and people do each season. We have an on-going chart we will be filling out and then will make comparisons using a Venn diagram. Another yearlong theme word is CYCLE. We just finished learning about the Life Cycle of Monarch Butterflies and will learn about other animal life cycles, plant life cycles throughout the year We are beginning to get more into a routine each day. The boys and girls are learning more about Daily 5 and developing more stamina for reading. I will be talking about Take home Books in the next newsletter, and will be looking for parent volunteers to help in the classroom each week starting the middle/end of October. If you are considering helping out, please note that I will need parents Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9:45 10:45ish. I would love 2 helpers each of those days. Watch for a special note going home.

Special Schedule:
Monday: P.E. and Art Tuesday: Music Wednesday: Computer Lab Thursday: Library Make sure books
are returned by Thursday morning so your child can check out another book.)

Friday: P.E.
I will be including the October All Ears Issue with this newsletter as well. There is great information in those publications. Have a great weekend!

(Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Writers Workshop) Starting in the next few weeks the kids will begin to make good choices as far as the order they want to do the 5 activities. They will be doing the daily 5 activities in small groups. You will see a record sheet coming home that will show how they kept track of their choices.

Math: Please make sure your child has his/her name on their math home links. I want to make sure they get credit for his/her work. We are finished unit 1 this week and will begin unit 2 next week. We will begin to learn about clocks and telling time, learning coin values, and making coin exchanges, and work with number lines and grids for counting up and back. This will develop readiness for addition and subtraction. Writing:
We have been doing a lot of writing in our

science journals the past week, and will continue to do this. We are working on writing neatly, keeping spaces between words, remembering periods at the ends of sentences, and putting our letters in between the lines correctly. We have also begun writing small moments in class.

Other Information Here

Im still waiting for a few students to turn in their Belmonts best paper. (orange paper) This was sent home at open house. The September book order was placed and the students received it already. I am promoting Octobers as well. We read a great book in class called, Gotta Go, Gotta Go by Sam Swope. Its about a caterpillars life and is really cute. If you want to add a great book to your childs book collection I highly recommend it! Its in the October books order form. To order online: scholastic.com/readingclub the activation code is: LQBV6. This was a great way for parents to order books last month. I will also send home a paper with the books. Check it out. If youd like to order with a check or cash you need to have the book order form returned to me at school by Friday, October 11, with a check to Scholastic Books. Thanks!

Here are more pictures of the many things we are doing & learning about in first grade!
Here is our wearing our Johnny Appleseed hats. We made applesauce, graphed our favorite apples, learned about the apple trees, and learned about Johnny Chapman!
